Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Versatile Platform For Light Harvesting And Energy Transfer, Derek E. Williams Jan 2017

Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Versatile Platform For Light Harvesting And Energy Transfer, Derek E. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The global energy demand is undoubtedly rising at an alarming rate, and as a result, humanity faces the problem of finding alternative energy supplies. Approximately 80 percent of the world’s energy currently comes from fossil fuels, and only a small fraction, 10 percent, from renewable energy sources. The study of energy transfer (ET) processes is a rapidly developing area of interest due to the necessity for more efficient photovoltaic devices, which are crucial to meet the growing energy demand. A promising approach to further advance organic photovoltaics is to precisely arrange many lightharvesting chromophores (e.g., porphyrin derivatives), attainable through a …

Understanding The Relationship Of Contextual Support, Peer Risk Trajectories, And School Outcomes For At-Risk Youth, Emily B. Mancil Jan 2017

Understanding The Relationship Of Contextual Support, Peer Risk Trajectories, And School Outcomes For At-Risk Youth, Emily B. Mancil

Theses and Dissertations

High school dropout (HSDO) is associated with poor life outcomes across many domains. As such, it is crucial to understand and identify the factors that contribute to HSDO risk early to increase the chance of positive student outcomes. Because students at-risk are heterogeneous, researchers recommend using pattern-centered approaches to identify subpopulations with similar risk profiles to better understand various typologies of risk. This may be a more comprehensive and accurate way to understand students atrisk for HSDO and may facilitate the development of more effective interventions. To date, seven empirical studies have used a pattern-centered approach to examine HSDO. However, …

Characterizing The Role Of The E3 Ligase Itch In Gut Mucosal Homeostasis, Heather L. Mentrup Jan 2017

Characterizing The Role Of The E3 Ligase Itch In Gut Mucosal Homeostasis, Heather L. Mentrup

Theses and Dissertations

The mucosal barrier of the small intestine is highly dynamic, enabling the passage of nutrients that are necessary for the body’s function while simultaneously preventing a breach by harmful microorganisms that are damaging to the host. The effectiveness of the mucosal barrier is dependent on the cohesive relationship established between the luminal mucosal epithelium and the underlying immune compartment in the small intestine. The epithelium provides the first line of defense against pathogens by establishing a physical barrier separating the external environment from the body’s internal milieu, while the immune system secondarily responds to clear bacteria that have breached the …

Spatial Optimization Methods And System For Redistricting Problems, Hai Jin Jan 2017

Spatial Optimization Methods And System For Redistricting Problems, Hai Jin

Theses and Dissertations

Redistricting is the process of dividing space into districts or zones while optimizing a set of spatial criteria under certain constraints. Example applications of redistricting include political redistricting, school redistricting, business service planning, and city management, among many others. Redistricting is a mission-critical component in operating governments and businesses alike. In research fields, redistricting (or region building) are also widely used, such as climate zoning, traffic zone analysis, and complex network analysis. However, as a combinatorial optimization problem, redistricting optimization remains one of the most difficult research challenges. There are currently few automated redistricting methods that have the optimization capability …

The Use Of Print Referencing Techniques Through Preschoolers’ Play-Based Creative Writing Experiences: The Impact On Oral Language Development, Print Awareness, And Literacy Abilities With Children Diagnosed With Language Disorder, Catherine Ann Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I explored the lives of 10 children who were diagnosed with a language disorder. The children were enrolled in a therapeutic half-day speech-language preschool classroom for 3- and 4-year-old children within a public-school system in the rural Southeast. The research included a 15-week mini-ethnographic case study utilizing participant observation. Through a sociocultural Vygotskian approach used to meet their language and literacy needs holistically, I encouraged the children to use meaningful artifacts from which their play, talk, and stories developed. I collected both qualitative and quantitative data to assess how creative writing experiences including print referencing approaches impacted …

Heritage Without History: The 1960 South Carolina Secession Reenactment And The Desertion Of Historical Authority In Confederate Commemoration, Joshua Whitfield

Theses and Dissertations

In 1960 the South Carolina Confederate War Centennial Commission sponsored a reenactment of the 1860 secession convention as the keystone event for state observances of the Civil War Centennial. Local organizations such as the Richland Country Historical Society and WIS Television produced the reenactment, which featured politicians like Strom Thurmond and George Bell Timmerman in leading roles as secession delegates. The pageant had three live showings, and a televised version of the reenactment aired on WIS-TV, which broadcast the program across the state. Following the production’s open-circuit broadcast, the SC Educational Television Center continued broadcasting it in state public schools …

Non-Dischargeability Of Foreign Student Loans, Andrew Brown Jan 2017

Non-Dischargeability Of Foreign Student Loans, Andrew Brown

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Educational loans made, insured, or guaranteed by a governmental unit are not dischargeable in a bankruptcy case, unless the debtor obtains a hardship determination. This is true even if the loan is made, insured, or guaranteed by a foreign governmental unit. The rationale behind making it difficult to discharge student loans via the United States Bankruptcy Code (the “Code”) is to prevent abuses of the educational loan system, specifically students filing for bankruptcy shortly after graduation to discharge their loans.

Various circuit courts have adopted two tests when applying the undue hardship provision of section 532(a)(8). In 1987, the …

Bankruptcy Courts May Alter Final Sale Orders And Findings Of Good Faith Purchasers, Louis Calabro Jan 2017

Bankruptcy Courts May Alter Final Sale Orders And Findings Of Good Faith Purchasers, Louis Calabro

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

For many years, a policy of finality has existed in the legal sphere to protect purchasers after a sale has been completed. This policy serves to create stability and predictability for investors and incentivizes activity in the marketplace. In bankruptcy cases, issues of finality are implicated when a debtor engages in an asset sale, and the court grants a final sale order. The purchasing party wants the sale to be final, so courts have promoted the policy of finality to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of bankruptcy plans. Sometimes, however, an adverse party claims to have an interest in …

Chapter 11 Liquidation And Its Effect On Collective Bargaining Agreements, Dylan Coyne Jan 2017

Chapter 11 Liquidation And Its Effect On Collective Bargaining Agreements, Dylan Coyne

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Sections 1113 and 1114 of title 11 of the United States Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”) allow a debtor to reject its collective bargaining agreements and payment of retiree benefits, subject to certain statutory conditions being met. These provisions apply to companies that employ unionized workers who receive compensation and benefits pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement. Both sections, however, only apply to a debtor that is “reorganizing.” Moreover, courts have held that section 1114, which governs the payment of insurance benefits to retirees, permits modification of obligations under a statute, such as the Coal Industry Retiree Health Benefit Act …

Effects Of Veil Piercing, Alter Ego And Substantive Consolidation On Bankruptcy, Lauren Gross Jan 2017

Effects Of Veil Piercing, Alter Ego And Substantive Consolidation On Bankruptcy, Lauren Gross

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

At times, bankruptcy can seem like a game of cat and mouse between debtors and creditors. By filing for bankruptcy in the first place, debtors change the rules of the game with various bankruptcy mechanisms, such as the automatic stay provision set forth in section 361 of the United States Bankruptcy Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”). An important inquiry exists in what creditors can to do promote their interests in bankruptcy. An even more important inquiry lies in determining what doctrines may satisfy generally recognized principles of equity for all.

One option for creditors who deal with corporate entities is …

Creditors Cannot Contract Around Their Fiduciary Duties And Withhold Their Consent From A Debtor To File For Bankruptcy, Samantha Guido Jan 2017

Creditors Cannot Contract Around Their Fiduciary Duties And Withhold Their Consent From A Debtor To File For Bankruptcy, Samantha Guido

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Many courts have found that a debtor may not contract away their right to voluntarily file for bankruptcy. However, debtors and creditors have implemented creative measures to avoid this principle. For example, a creditor may seek the appointment of a so-called “blocking director” on a company’s board of directors, who would control the company’s bankruptcy filing. Additionally, some creditors seek a “golden share” in order to have veto power over changes to the company’s charter, including veto power over whether the company can file for bankruptcy. In determining whether these mechanisms are void under public policy, courts will consider …

A Dragnet Clause And A Future Advances Clause Can Reach The Collateral Of A Loan That Has Already Been Repaid, Stephanie Hung Jan 2017

A Dragnet Clause And A Future Advances Clause Can Reach The Collateral Of A Loan That Has Already Been Repaid, Stephanie Hung

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

This memorandum will explore the secured transactions issues that arose in In re Omni Enterprises. In that case, the Bankruptcy Court in Alaska held that a bank may enforce the security interest of a prior loan that has already been repaid to cure a new loan that was in default. The prior loan was secured by the debtor’s deposit accounts, and contained a cross-collateralization clause and future advances clause; however, the new loan did not mention the deposit accounts at all. When the debtor defaulted on the new loan, the bank argued, among other things, that it continued …

When Are Debtors And Creditors Bound To The Provisions Of Confirmed Reorganization Plans?, Gabriella Labita Jan 2017

When Are Debtors And Creditors Bound To The Provisions Of Confirmed Reorganization Plans?, Gabriella Labita

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Generally, when a debtor files for protection under chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”), a plan of reorganization is filed at some point with the bankruptcy court. The court then holds a hearing to determine whether the judge will confirm the reorganization plan. The judge will confirm the plan if it meets the criteria of Section 1129 of the Bankruptcy Code, which requires, among other things, that any payments made in connection with the plan are reasonable. A plan of reorganization is a significant component of a debtor’s emergence from bankruptcy, as it affects …

Federal Preemption And The Bankruptcy Code: At What Point Does State Law Cease To Apply During The Claims Allowance Process?, Dylan Lackowitz

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Anything you do in bankruptcy can and will be used against you in bankruptcy. Prior to the commencement of a bankruptcy case, perhaps courts should issue this Miranda-esque warning to the parties. At least, if the bankruptcy court had, Plymouth LLC (“Plymouth”) might have saved approximately $800,000 that it spent acquiring a lien against Princeton LP’s (“Princeton”) vacant office park in the Township of Lawrence, New Jersey. Recently, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit held that Plymouth’s claim against Princeton in Princeton’s bankruptcy case was disallowed for violating New Jersey’s tax sale law pursuant to …

All Talk, But No Action Leads To The Loss Of Ground Breaking Cancer Research, Nicholas Marcello

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Each year, the government awards millions of dollars in federal grants to fund scientific research. Despite this huge allocation of resources, the government’s claim in such funded research may be limited should the receiving institution become a debtor in bankruptcy. Last year, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts allowed the destruction of government funded research to benefit the debtor estate.

The Inconsistent Application Of Section 1113 To Expired Collective Bargaining Agreements, Courtney Creighton Sokol Jan 2017

The Inconsistent Application Of Section 1113 To Expired Collective Bargaining Agreements, Courtney Creighton Sokol

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

The United States Bankruptcy Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”) allows a trustee a debtor-in-possession (“DIP”) to assume or reject a collective bargaining agreement (“CBA”). Courts are split on whether a trustee or DIP may reject an expired collective bargaining agreement under section 1113 of the Bankruptcy Code. In general, a collective bargaining agreement may be rejected notwithstanding the labor standards afforded to employees by the National Labor Relations Act (“NLRA”). In particular, under the NLRA, an employer that is party to a CBA is obligated to bargain with its employees until the employer either enters into a new contract or …

The Role Of Notch-1-Mediated Repression Of Pten On Growth And Cancer Stem Cell Survival In Trastuzumab Resistant, Her2+ Breast Cancer, Andrew Thomas Baker Jan 2017

The Role Of Notch-1-Mediated Repression Of Pten On Growth And Cancer Stem Cell Survival In Trastuzumab Resistant, Her2+ Breast Cancer, Andrew Thomas Baker

Dissertations

Trastuzumab targets the ErbB2 (HER2) receptor on breast cancer cells to attenuate HER2 driven tumor formation. Trastuzumab reduces both downstream PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathway signaling as well as the breast cancer stem cell (BCSC) population. BCSCs are hypothesized to be responsible for tumor recurrence, metastasis, as well as drug resistance. Today, resistance to trastuzumab remains a major clinical problem for women diagnosed with HER2+ breast cancer. Attenuation of PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathways may occur through the tumor suppressor, PTEN. Women with HER2+ breast tumors expressing less PTEN and increased PI3K/Akt or MAPK activity have worse overall outcome. Previously we have …

Patriots And Practical Men: British Educational Policy And The Responses Of Colonial Subjects In India, 1880-1890, David Thomas Boven Jan 2017

Patriots And Practical Men: British Educational Policy And The Responses Of Colonial Subjects In India, 1880-1890, David Thomas Boven

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the interplay between educational policy implemented by the British colonial authorities in India and the religious and ethnic communities impacted by these policies. It first considers educational policies promulgated from the earliest days of rule by the British East India Company until the Hunter Commission of 1882. Following this survey, the dissertation considers Indian reactions to these systems and colonial structures of education between 1880 and 1890. Those colonizing India had planned to use education as a means of stabilizing and strengthening their own rule on the subcontinent. As the British colonizers steadily overran the subcontinent, …

UNAVOIDABLE PRESSURE ULCER: AN ETHNONURSING STUDY

In an effort to improve patient safety and the quality of care in the acute care setting, there has been an increased focus on the prevention of adverse events believed to be avoidable. Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU) have been listed as one of those adverse events, and hospitals are no longer reimbursed for related costs. However, there are patient conditions and clinical situations in which a pressure ulcer can be deemed unavoidable. In acute care, unavoidable means that the patient developed a pressure ulcer even though the provider …

Cellular Determinants Of Coronavirus Entry Routes, James Thomas Earnest Jan 2017

Cellular Determinants Of Coronavirus Entry Routes, James Thomas Earnest

Dissertations

Coronaviruses (CoVs) represent some of the greatest modern threats to global health. CoVs are zoonotic viruses that generally cause respiratory or enteric infections. The ability of CoVs to move between species and into human populations ensures that CoVs will remain important and dangerous pathogens. Therefore, understanding how CoVs infect different hosts is vital to human health.

CoVs are enveloped and must undergo fusion of viral and host membranes to initiate infection. Viral glycoproteins, called Spike (S) proteins, are responsible for host cell binding and carrying out the membrane fusion reaction. S proteins store energy in their folded, pre-fusion conformation that …

We Can Do Better: Evaluating An Intervention Remedying Caseworkers’ Negative Racial Bias Towards African American Families Involved In Child Welfare, Adrianne Michele Fletcher Jan 2017

We Can Do Better: Evaluating An Intervention Remedying Caseworkers’ Negative Racial Bias Towards African American Families Involved In Child Welfare, Adrianne Michele Fletcher

Dissertations

Given that U.S. history documents the severing of African-American family ties by isolating parents from each other and their children under slavery, it is imperative that the child welfare system be free of any echoes of that holocaust. Yet many scholars and practitioners who lament negative racial attitude, both implicit and explicit, may continue to contribute to the over-representation of African-American children in the U.S. child welfare system. This study proposes to examine a subcategory of practitioner attitudes, those about the caregivers’ race, and how those attitudes can be altered through a reflective educational experience. Drawing from pre-existing research about …

Research Practices Of Music Educators: A Review Of The Journal Of Research In Music Education, Clifton Brent Mcreynolds Jan 2017

Research Practices Of Music Educators: A Review Of The Journal Of Research In Music Education, Clifton Brent Mcreynolds

Dissertations

Music Education researchers face the same challenge of producing valid, reliable, and thorough work as any field in education. A content analysis was conducted on the Journal of Research in Music Education from 2011-2016 to determine what research trends were occurring and whether or not those trends are continuations of existing literature. Investigation included distributions of research designs as well as the four components Crotty recommended for quality research. Findings supported previous research indicating more qualitative studies within the journal. Also, for those articles having three or four of Crotty’s components, qualitative coding of these components were categorized into constructive-where …

The Effects Of Alcohol And Traumatic Brain Injury On Neural Stem Cell Responses, Son Trung Ton Jan 2017

The Effects Of Alcohol And Traumatic Brain Injury On Neural Stem Cell Responses, Son Trung Ton

Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major source of disability in modern societies. However, there are no good pharmacological strategies for treating long-term TBI complications because we do not fully understand the injury processes that occur afterward. Moreover, a significant percent of patients entering the emergency room with TBI have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Alcohol use and intoxication is a widespread issue in our society. Binge drinking is the most common way in which alcohol is consumed, and alarmingly, Americans of all age groups binge drink on a frequent basis. Despite the prevalence of alcohol intoxication …

Comparisons Of Artifact Correction Procedures For Meta-Analysis: An Empirical Examination On Correcting Reliabilities, Lei Zhao Jan 2017

Comparisons Of Artifact Correction Procedures For Meta-Analysis: An Empirical Examination On Correcting Reliabilities, Lei Zhao

Dissertations

This study reviewed some challenges and issues in artifact correction meta-analysis, particularly around using reliability estimates to correct for measurement error. Two individual correction procedures—the Hunter-Schmidt procedure and the procedure developed by Raju, Burke, Normand, and Langlois (the RBNL procedure)—are addressed in this research. The purpose of this study is to use real-world data to examine the differences between meta-analytic estimations produced by the two artifact correction procedures and those by the traditional bare-bones meta-analysis procedures, under the condition of inter-dependent reliabilities. The impact of this inter-correlation on meta-analysis results needs investigation when artifact indicators, such as reliability of predictor …

Investigating Novel Methods Of Interaction With Pharmaceutically Relevant Enzymes, Cory T. Reidl Jan 2017

Investigating Novel Methods Of Interaction With Pharmaceutically Relevant Enzymes, Cory T. Reidl

Dissertations

Metalloproteins requiring one or more metal ions for normal function make up 30% of all known proteins, and many critical biological pathways contain at least one metallo-enzyme. Di-nuclear metallo-proteins constitute a large class of these proteins yet we currently lack effective methods of inhibiting these enzymes for the development of new medical therapies, particularly for the discovery of new antibiotics. Our work has focused on developing novel functionalities that selectively interact with di-nuclear catalytic centers, and we are targeting three separate di-zinc-metallo-enzymes that are unique to bacteria and play key roles in their growth and development. These enzymes are DapE, …

The Internalization Of The Model Minority Stereotype, Acculturative Stress, And Ethnic Identity On Academic Stress, Academic Performance, And Mental Health Among Asian American College Students, Hanna Yun-Han Chang Jan 2017

The Internalization Of The Model Minority Stereotype, Acculturative Stress, And Ethnic Identity On Academic Stress, Academic Performance, And Mental Health Among Asian American College Students, Hanna Yun-Han Chang

Dissertations

Previous studies in Asian American psychology literature on cultural factors of acculturation and ethnic identity have yielded mixed findings in its relation to psychological outcomes. Furthermore, there is a gap in the knowledge base regarding the internalization of the model minority stereotype and its impact on Asian Americans. Due to Asian Americans' tendency to value academic excellence as a result of socialization by cultural values and family upbringings, this study examined the effects acculturative stress, ethnic identity, and the internalization of model minority on academic stress, academic performance, and mental health.

Results of this study indicated that acculturative stress significantly …

Aging Well In 21st Century America: Towards A Theological Ethics Of Aging, Chrisitan Cintron

Dissertations

As Third Agers transition into life after work they are faced with a renewed challenge, living the good life. The normative images emanating from the social and cultural landscape allow Third Agers to either envision and live their new life, or adopt a course set out for them. These new lives require a re-discovery and re-defining of the self, a reinterpretation of one's role in society, and relationship to others. As with other phases of life, individuals need guidance when confronted with images of living well that are contradictory or perhaps antithetical to what they imagined for themselves. Various social …
