The Sovereign Ideal: Views Of Rome In Athenian Inscriptions, Connor Q. North

This research examines the effect of discourse on the relationship between the ancient Roman and Athenian states through an analysis of each culture’s treatment of the most significant terms in that exchange. Athenian inscriptions frequently describe Romans and their Republic as friends and allies. Previous research has often dismissed these terms as euphemistic due to the difficulty of reconciling their equitable connotations with the highly asymmetrical power of Rome; however, this research argues on the basis of (IR) Constructivism that discourse played a constitutive role in ancient politics. Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This essay evaluates a variety of national security visions put forth between the Revolution and War of 1812. It uncovers how a professional army became the prevailing national security apparatus during America’s nascent years. Additionally, special attention is given to Thomas Jefferson’s role in the process, which culminated in the establishment of a military academy at West Point. The essay argues that the academy’s creation advanced a professional army with characteristics particular for its time: a diverse and egalitarian force, bound to the ideals of republicanism.

This paper looks at the presidencies of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. The main purpose will be to demonstrate that there are a great deal of similarities among the three men and their styles of governing from the highest office in the land. The paper will look at aspects of their presidency, including their inaugural addresses, contacts with Native Americans, and how they viewed their role within the confines of the United States Constitution. Wicca has typically been viewed as an empowering alternative to institutionalized and patriarchal religions, and women especially have been drawn to this religion because of its inclusion of women as goddesses and priestesses. It is also seen as a sex-positive religion, and many LGBTQ+ people embrace Wicca due to its lack of concepts such as sin and shame, especially around sex and sexuality. This research, however, troubles the claim that Wicca is a feminist, woman-friendly, queer-friendly religion. While women are celebrated and valued, I argue that women’s positive portrayal as mothers, nurturers, emotional, and intuitive portrays women’s nature in a …

In the Middle Ages, Europe saw a great amassing of thousands of lords, knights, and ordinary people for an extraordinary expedition into the Holy Land. This event was called the First Crusade. The First Crusade was one of the more successful crusades, however, this fact is overshadowed by the negatives of the crusades. My paper explores the reasons for how the crusaders were able to be victorious in the First Crusade.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of 1) a prolonged run and 2) a three-week running training program on peak tibial acceleration (PTA) during running, as well as on Functional Movement Screen (FMS) Deep Squat and Active Straight Leg Raise criterion tests. Ten novice runners (4 men, 6 women, age 27± 7.1 years, mass 70.71± 17.05kg) with 14.7± 13.5 months of training experience completed a thirty-minute run at a self-selected pace (2.48 ± 0.58 m/s), and a three-week training program with an approximate 25% weekly increase in running mileage. The State of Alaska demonstrates exceedingly high rates of interpersonal violence, child neglect, depression, and drug related arrests when compared with national rates. Substance use disorder is often linked with instances of interpersonal violence, child neglect, depression and judicial consequences. An equine assisted therapy program could provide support for the treatment of substance use disorders in Alaska. This project asks one basic question, "What benefits could an equine assisted therapy program provide for individuals in a level II, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in interior Alaska?" While these systems can be very effective with significant benefits over conventional counter-IED techniques, the excessive space, weight, and prime power (SWaP) requirements create significant challenges in developing deployable systems. This thesis analyzes the relationships between civilians and soldiers in the Defenses of Washington during the Civil War. Marked by a combination of conflict and adaptation, the visible tension between soldiers and civilians threatened Union loyalty around Washington. Differing identities and priorities caused these conflicts. Young soldiers steeped in a Northern education that cast the South as an enemy thought slavery and associations with Maryland marked Washington’s rural outskirts as an enemy territory. This dynamic, along with material needs, led soldiers to frequently take private property without compensation, known as foraging. Furthermore, soldiers adopted new identities and social groups that …

‘A Matter Of Opinion’: British Attempts To Assess The Attrition Of German Manpower, 1915–1917, Louis Halewood

Revisionist historians of the Western Front have demonstrated that Britain had no alternative but to wage a war of attrition to defeat Germany. However, the effort to assess this process has been neglected in the historiography. This article explores British attempts to gauge the success of their strategy of wearing down German manpower. Efforts in London proved unable to supply a convincing answer. Using General Headquarters’ dubious estimates from the front, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig argued that his strategy was working. Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s inability to confound these estimates shaped his decision to permit the Passchendaele offensive.

Courts cannot agree on how to handle cases centered on unlicensed use of a trademark or celebrity’s likeness in video games. Two tests have arisen as the primary standards by which to judge such cases: the Rogers test and the transformative-use test. However, in an area of law muddled by multiple standards and the inconsistent application of those standards to a relatively new medium, neither test can adequately balance mark holder rights with the constitutional rights of video game developers. This thesis undertakes the examination of how and why children often figure prominently in films about war. Rather than accept the common argument that innocence is what makes children compelling as victims and objects of observation, this thesis argues that children in war films subvert dominant narratives about war and victimhood by asking questions that pierce through accepted narratives, revealing the child as an agent in possession of an adult knowledge that seems to run contrary to attempts to display the child as a naive innocent.
