Theoretical Approach Towards A Greener Synthesis Of Macrocyclic Ligands For Iron Based Oxidation Catalysts, Eric Stephens

Iron tetra-amido macrocyclic ligand (TAML) complexes are a class of biomimetic catalytic oxidants whose design and function embody the principles of green chemistry. This study develops a computational method to geometrically optimize a number of these structures – used to generate and select possible TAML conformers. A target structure was selected, and a synthetic scheme was constructed in an effort to produce the structure with less waste and derivatives than conventional methods. The computational model yielded accurate results for existing class of TAMLs, the best conformers were those that have been extensively characterized by Dr. Terrence J Collins. The synthetic …

High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), especially those that include both topography and bathymetry, have proven to be an invaluable resource for scientific applications in various areas of research, particularly the fields of ecology and water chemistry. The importance of coastal environments and ecosystems located near the terrestrial/aquatic interface are widely recognized but often, topographic and bathymetric data are collected independently for different purposes, making it difficult to use the data together. In Search Of A Modern, Chinese Theater: The Politics Of Performance In The Twentieth Century, Samantha Sanford

This thesis looks at the development of modern Chinese theater in the twentieth-century, both as a theatrical genre and a literary historiographical category. By moving chronologically through various theatrical reform attempts by intellectuals across the political spectrum, this thesis discusses the politicization of Chinese theater, the development of hybrid mixtures of Chinese and European theater, and the creation of historiographical periods and categories. Additionally, discussing what is and is not considered a “modern” genre of theater dissects the modernity in twentieth-century Chinese culture as a post-colonial notion. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), alternatively the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is one of many non-state organizations that resulted from the extensive foreign intervention in the Middle East leading up to current conflicts there. Like the wider network that it used to be part of, ISIL is considered to be a great threat to modern first world countries. This study documents the distribution and habitat preferences of the golden crab, a commercially fished species, in relation to deep-sea coral/sponge ecosystems (DSCEs) at 200-900 m depths off eastern Florida. A total of 386 h of videotapes from 94 submersible and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives from 1999 to 2009, covering a total distance of 376 km, were reviewed and characterized for habitat type and presence of crabs. The DSCEs surveyed included Lophelia coral mounds, Miami Terrace, Pourtalès Terrace, and Tortugas Valleys. The United Nations (LN) is an organization established to "maintain international peace and security...develop friendly relations among nations [and] to achieve international cooperation ("UnitedNation",20l6). The Security Council is the UN's primary leadership body. It is led by five powerful countries - United States of America (USA), Russia, Great Britain, France and China -- that sit as "permanent members". The leadership of the Security Council is augmented by ten representatives from other countries who are elected by the General Assembly to serve two-year terms. Background: Excessive gambling is considered to be a part of the addiction spectrum. Stress-like emotional states are a key feature both of pathological gambling (PG) and of substance addiction. In substance addiction, stress symptomatology has been attributed in part to "anti-reward" allostatic neuroadaptations, while a potential involvement of anti-reward processes in the course of PG has not yet been investigated. Methods: To that end, individuals with PG (n = 22) and mentally healthy subjects (n = 13) were assessed for trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) using the Life Events Checklist and the Civilian Mississippi Scale, respectively. On September 22, 2016, Yahoo! Inc. ("Yahoo") announced that a data breach and theft of information from over 500 million user accounts had taken place during 2014, marking the largest data breach ever at the time. The information stolen likely included names, birthdays, telephone numbers, email addresses, hashed passwords, and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. Yahoo further disclosed its belief that the stolen data "did not include unprotected passwords, payment card data, or bank account information." This paper will focus mainly on the use, manufacturing, trafficking, and adverse effects of narcotic drugs. In addition, the major laws against the manufacturing, use, and trafficking of drugs will also be discussed, and the successes and hurdles in preventing the trafficking, use, and manufacturing of narcotic drugs will also be evaluated. Cybersecurity is one of the most pressing and legally difficult issues facing this country today. It touches every aspect of modern political and social life, the economy, and national security. From the OPM and IRS breaches, to the Sony hack, to attacks on hospitals and health insurers, to attacks on domestic and international infrastructure, to domestic and international surveillance, cybersecurity concerns are omnipresent. For technical, legal, and practical, reasons, they also have proven extremely difficult to address. Consequences Of Sexual Violence During Civil Conflicts For Post-Colonial Democratization, Kathleen Clark
Commonwealth Review of Political Science
Countries face large obstacles in the post-civil conflict period, including democratization. The nature of the warfare during the civil conflict may have important implications for the prospects for future democratization. Specifically, the experience of sexual violence during civil conflicts may hinder democratization. I argue that countries that experience prevalent sexual violence during civil conflicts have lower chances for post-conflict democratization than those without. This occurs through the psychological consequences of sexual violence on victims and communities. Sexual violence negatively impacts victims, but it can also have more widespread negative consequences for society. Communities of the victims may collectively respond to …

Lawrence Venuti’s foreignization theory, with its link of translation strategy with power struggle, is one of the most influential theories in translation studies since the 1990s. At the same time, his theory has also been subject to heated debate due to its loosely defined terms, prescriptive approach, binary thinking, elitist tendency, and other issues. One issue stands out in particular: contrary to its goal of resistance against Anglo- American hegemony, foreignization can lead to its opposite—exoticism or Orientalism—under certain circumstances. Narratives of the early American frontier precede even the founding of the American nation, and continued to serve as the setting for novelists and, later, filmmakers. This thesis explores the representation and role of women in three distinct eras of narrative, all focusing on narratives written about the 1750-1780s time period. These three eras, when examined for roles women play in these narratives, reveal variations in themes as cultural anxieties of both authors and audiences move from wartime concerns to settlement to reassertions of culture. This qualitative study describes the extent to which there is a perception of wellbeing among Acehnese refugees who arrived as adolescents to the United States and settled in the Mid - Atlantic States. Aceh is a province in Northwestern Indonesia consisting of approximately four million people. During 1990 to 2005, approximately 20,000 people left the province due to political conflict to seek asylum in Malaysia, their neighboring country, before resettling in a third country. The participants in this research study are Acehnese refugees that were resettled to the United States as adolescents during that peak migration phase. Results describe how …

This article offers an analysis of how refugee youths from Africa used and shifted languages and discourses in the United States. Drawing on sociocultural theories of language and utilizing ethnographic discourse and classroom observation data, the author illustrates the varied ways in which three high school–aged refugee youths used languages to make sense of who and where they are; respond to social, religious, and linguistic marginalization in the United States; and challenge narrow perceptions of African Muslims. Amongst late twentieth and early twenty-first century music, Arvo Pärt’s compositional style is a unique musical voice and has led to the composer becoming the most performed living classical composer for multiple years. His unmistakable tintinnabuli style is often labeled as part of the post-modernist movement, the minimalist genre, sacred minimalism, or even as neo-medieval. Despite any label, his music is as distinctive as it is revolutionary, and many of his works are considered cornerstone works of the late-twentieth and early-twenty-first centuries. For voters hoping the Supreme Court’s 2017 Term brings relief from partisan gerrymandering, the end of the 2016 Term was inauspicious. In Cooper v. Harris, the majority assumed the legitimacy of “partisan advantage” arguments while the dissent—including Justice Kennedy—warned about the “serious institutional and federalism implications” of judicial intervention in the redistricting process. If past is prologue, this concern for institutional and structural interests does not bode well.
