Theories On The Blue Wing Road Burial (41bx34) In The Context Of The Gutiérrez-Magee Expedition, Brandon K. Richards

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In 1968, the skeletal remains of an individual believed to have been involved in the Gutiérrez-Magee expedition of 1812-1813 were exhumed south of San Antonio. Since then, the circumstances surrounding what became known as the “Blue Wing Road burial” have remained somewhat of a mystery. This article introduces a new theory that posits that the burial is not directly related to the major battles fought in the region (the Battles of Rosalis and Medina), but more likely an incident involving a Republican detachment encountering Royalists stationed along a well-travelled route.

Elias maintained that over the course of several centuries death has become associated with greater shame and embarrassment feelings due mainly to four interwoven processes. In this paper we consider how these specific processes or 'special conditions' Elias referred to, in conjunction with other processes, shaped the experience of dying and the image of death for twentieth century Irish hunger strikers.

A streaming data clustering algorithm is presented building upon the density-based selforganizing stream clustering algorithm SOSTREAM. Many density-based clustering algorithms are limited by their inability to identify clusters with heterogeneous density. SOSTREAM addresses this limitation through the use of local (nearest neighbor-based) density determinations. Additionally, many stream clustering algorithms use a two-phase clustering approach. In the first phase, a micro-clustering solution is maintained online, while in the second phase, the micro-clustering solution is clustered offline to produce a macro solution. By performing self-organization techniques on micro-clusters in the online phase, SOSTREAM is able to maintain a macro clustering solution in …

This paper was written as a keynote address for a conference on Michael Walzer’s Just and Unjust War on the 40th anniversary of its publication. It discusses the significance of the book, and examines the updating prefaces Walzer wrote to the five editions of the book and his methodological postscript to the fifth edition. The paper contrasts Walzer’s philosophical method with that of analytic just war theory, arguing that Walzer’s use of historical cases and the analytic use of imaginary “toy” cases serve different philosophical ends. The Lincoln County Feud occurred between 1878 and 1890 in the Harts Creek community of Lincoln and Logan counties, West Virginia. The aim of this thesis is to determine the causes of the feud, explore factors that contributed to its escalation, and identify reasons for its conclusion. The Lincoln County Feud arose out of personal grievances between prominent residents Paris Brumfield and Canaan Adkins, intensified due to the changing socioeconomic nature of the Harts Creek community, transformed into a contest among merchants for economic and political supremacy, and concluded with the elimination or outmigration of anti-Brumfield factions. From the article abstract: This article examines the architectural and discursive configurations of traditional walled compounds in Nigeria. It begins by discussing the spatial and social organization of compounds in different regions of the country, focusing on the impermanent structures of the Èfik in and around the southeastern port city of Old Calabar. It then examines archival evidence to highlight the ways that compounds have been rhetorically constructed by European observers and post-independence scholars. World War II brought about many changes for the United States. Colleges and Universities had to deal with this change just as any other individual or organization did during the war. This paper looks specifically at how the war impacted Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Using the Selective Service and Training Act of 1940, this paper shows the steps taken by Augustana's president, Conrad Bergendoff, to combat the school's declining student population. Organophosphates (OP) are chemicals found in certain pesticides and in nerve agents such as sarin. Toxicity with these agents can lead to death. On August 2013, 1,300 civilians were killed using sarin gas in Syria by the Assad regimen. The lack of prepared medical facilities, and the availability of appropriate treatmentsignificantly contributed to the high percent of causality. Further, worldwide pesticides toxicity affects 3 million people annually. Yet the narrative surrounding the American Revolutionary War makes it seem as though the other major actor in the conflict, Great Britain, only reacted to the events in the North American colonies and yielded no personal motives to ultimately declare war. Responsibility for deciding to go to war in 1775 is essentially removed from British pre-war political and military leaders. The degenerate regimes and individuals have been a neglected topic in the literature on Plato’s moral psychology in the Republic. This thesis contributes to the currently limited literature on degradation, and explores the following issues in the interpretation of Plato: the validity of the city-soul analogy across all regimes, including both the just city and the unjust cities, the cause of degradation, and the bad-making feature in the degenerate regimes. How does the military learn in disaster relief operations? The American military has long played a critical role in international responses to natural disasters. Its forward-deployed resources, manpower, and other unique capabilities make it a critical asset for the larger disaster relief community. While the U.S. military and scholars alike have poured considerable resources into understanding how the military learns in traditional operations, this literature fails to provide a compelling explanation for how and why the military learns in non-combat operations. Interviews with involved officials and primary source evidence of learning suggests that the military is better at learning in …
