Designing Biological Experimentation Systems For High Altitude Ballooning, Caitlyn Singam Oct 2017

Designing Biological Experimentation Systems For High Altitude Ballooning, Caitlyn Singam

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

The prevalence of bacteria in the atmosphere has been well-established in relevant literature, suggesting that airborne bacteria can influence atmospheric characteristics including the development of clouds. Studies have also demonstrated that the atmospheric biological profile is influenced by the underlying terrestrial biomes. An understanding of the complex interplay of factors that can influence the atmospheric biological profile, not to mention developing a biological census of the atmosphere, requires a cost-effective experimental system capable of generating reproducible results with reliable data. However, as a recent balloon payload launched by JAXA demonstrated, these payloads are both complex and cost prohibitive. This paper …

Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt

Charleston Library Conference

Librarians rely on an ever-increasing variety of platforms to deliver streaming video content to our patrons. These two presentations will examine different aspects of video streaming platforms to gain guidance from the comparison of platforms. The first will examine the accessibility compliance of the various video streaming platforms for users with disabilities by examining accessibility features of the platforms. The second will be a comparison of subject usage of two of the larger video streaming platform providers (Alexander Street Press and Kanopy) done at Indiana University Bloomington, a large public university.

Hothouse Victorians: Art And Agency In Freshwater, Kristine Swenson Oct 2017

Hothouse Victorians: Art And Agency In Freshwater, Kristine Swenson

English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Victorian artistic community that grew up on the Isle of Wight around Tennyson and Julia Margaret Cameron has been reimagined in Virginia Woolf's play, Freshwater (1923, 1935), and more recently in Lynn Truss's novel, Tennyson's Gift (1996). Whereas Freshwater should be read as modernist or post-Victorian, Tennyson's Gift is neo-Victorian and postmodern in its form and attitude. Integral to both are the discontent of women and the disruption of gender norms. Therefore, this essay looks particularly at the question of female agency in a Victorian world envisioned in 1923-35 and one of 1996. In Freshwater, one sees a serious …

Mapping A Beat Repertoire: Recovering Everyday Life Performances Of The Women Of The Beat Generation, Stephanie Patricia Heath

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using memoir, material objects, archival research, and performance, this project locates important points of everyday life performances that are missed when the focus of Beat woman scholarship primarily seeks to integrate their literary writing into the male-centered narrative of the Beat Generation. This study retraces steps and experiences located in New York City and recovered from archives. The base narrative of the study is drawn from the memoirs How I Became Hettie Jones by Hettie Jones, Minor Characters by Joyce Johnson, and Recollections of My Life as a Woman by Diane di Prima, this project recovers the everyday life performances …
