Aphra Behn On The Contemporary Stage: Behn's Feminist Legacy And Woman-Directed Revivals Of The Rover, Nicole Elizabeth Stodard

This study theorizes the origins and history of the professional female playwright and director from the Restoration period to the present day through the stage history of Behn's most popular play, The Rover. Part one is comprised of two chapters: the first in this section argues the importance of appreciating Behn's proto-directorial function in the Restoration theatre and her significance to the history of feminism and women in professional theatre; the second chapter in this section examines the implications of casting practices and venue changes to eighteenth-century revivals of Behn's canon with a particular eye towards what a contemporary director …

In this dissertation, I discuss the traditional organizational model adopted by symphony orchestras in the United States as non-profit arts organizations that are struggling to maintain solvency within the current philanthropic, political, and digital contexts. As part of the discussion, I conduct field research within the local area of the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in providing demonstrations of live and informal classical performance in various businesses and institutions while collecting data via surveys from willing adult participants (ages 18 and above) of all demographics, specifically lower income areas. This essay contends that W.B. Yeats’s quest for beauty in art has far more in common with Walter Pater’s aesthetic views than is generally acknowledged. This article particularly focuses on Greek art, which provided both writers with paradigms with which to articulate their aesthetic theories. Yeats made ample use of Pater’s distinction between Ionian and Dorian art, and this opposition may in fact lie at the root of Yeats’s esoteric system set down in A Vision and based upon two contrary types of individuals, civilizations, and religions. Music, Setting, Voice: Maeterlinck's Pelléas Et Mélisande And Yeats's The Countess Cathleen, Michael Mcateer

International Yeats Studies

Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande is one of the finest and most influential works of French Symbolist drama from the 1890s. This essay examines the close affinities between the play and W. B. Yeats’s The Countess Cathleen as it was first performed in Dublin in 1899. In illustrating these affinities, it draws attention to performances of Pelléas et Mélisande that Yeats attended in London in 1898 and 1904. Examining features of Maeterlinck’s play and The Countess Cathleen in close detail, the essay develops Katharine Worth’s general observations on the aspects of theatre that Maeterlinck and Yeats shared. Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Penny Rich is a 70-year old lesbian living in Portland, Maine. She recieved a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Southern Maine. She is known for her involvement in major social events such as Portland Pride and the Women's Coffeehouse, as well as her experiences with gay bar culture throughout the 60's and 70's. She spends her time socializing, exercising, reading, and getting involved in local political and social issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community in Portland, Maine.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical South Pacific is set in an island paradise during World War II. It tells the tale of two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war, and how these couples confront their fears for a chance to find happiness. The show features music composed by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan.

Throughout its history, England and its writers have created its national identity out of thin air. Some writers such as William of Malmesbury and John Milton have consciously constructed their imagined Englands, while other authors during the medieval and early modern periods are subtler, but whose works reflect the historical and cultural moment, the fears, desires, and anxieties about kingship, tyranny, heirs, and stability, that existed during that time. Little scholarship has focused on the devil’s role in these constructions, his political nature, and how this nature is used in constructing nationalistic arguments.
