Predicting Levels Of Learning With Eye Tracking, Saurin Sharad Parikh
Predicting Levels Of Learning With Eye Tracking, Saurin Sharad Parikh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
E-Learning is transforming the delivery of education. Today, millions of students take selfpaced online courses. However, the content and language complexity often hinders comprehension, and that with lack of immediate help from the instructor leads to weaker learning outcomes. Ability to predict difficult content in real time enables eLearning systems to adapt content as per students' level of learning. The recent introduction of lowcost eye trackers has opened a new class of applications based on eye response. Eye tracking devices can record eye response on the visual element or concept in real time. The response and the variations in eye …
Relationship Between Anthropometric Measurements And Average Concentric Velocity In The Back Squat, Daniel M. Cooke
Relationship Between Anthropometric Measurements And Average Concentric Velocity In The Back Squat, Daniel M. Cooke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of the present study was to investigate if any relationship exists between anthropometric measurements with average concentric velocity (ACV) at various intensities in the back squat and the number of repetitions able to be performed during a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). It was hypothesised that short femurs and total height would be related to slower ACVs and lower total number of repetitions performed. 58 resistance trained subjects were recruited and attended one day of data collection. Subjects performed 1RM testing of the back squat followed by two single repetition sets at 30-90% …
Science Comprehension Vs. Cultural Cognition As Predictors Of Climate Change Risk Perception, Elyse A. Steiner
Science Comprehension Vs. Cultural Cognition As Predictors Of Climate Change Risk Perception, Elyse A. Steiner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study identified factors that affect climate change risk perception in a community college class. The purpose of this research was to determine if students were more influenced by cultural cognition (political affiliation) or science comprehension. Students in an undergraduate level environmental science and biology class were evaluated, using an online survey, for science comprehension level, political affiliation and risk perception at the beginning and end of each course. Data were analyzed to determine improved scientific literacy and any variation in risk perception. The research found that science comprehension did not contribute significantly to increased risk perception and that political …
Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer
Relationship Between Psychological Factors And Acute Strength Task Performance, Michael H. Haischer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this research was to investigate if various psychological wellbeing assessments can predict maximal strength performance and self-scored rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in the back squat. Fifty-eight resistance-trained males and females were recruited, and reported to the laboratory on one day. Subjects completed eight different scales and questionnaires before completing one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing of the squat, followed by two single-repetition sets at 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90% of 1RM, and a set to volitional fatigue at 70% of 1RM. Cognitive anxiety and hypersomnia were found to be positive and negative predictors (p<0.05), respectively, of 1RM performance. Further, self-confidence, grit, and perceived recovery status were significant negative predictors of RPE (p<0.05). Finally, PRS was discovered to be a positive predictor of subject-reported 1RM self-efficacy (b=0.39, t=3.14, p<0.01, R2=0.15).
Resistance Is Never Futile: Un-Sporting Surfing As Radical Female Behavior, Katherine E. Schipper
Resistance Is Never Futile: Un-Sporting Surfing As Radical Female Behavior, Katherine E. Schipper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Using the narrative imagery of Instagram and the cultural narrative of the Olympics, I explore the role of agency and autonomy in modern sport with a focus on the commercial and institutional arms of surfing. This project is an attempt to evaluate visual and cultural narrative from the perspective of a literary scholar and to root theory and philosophy in issues that go beyond scholarship and academics. In chapter one, I use sports sociologists Jennifer Hargreaves and Krista Comer as well as Jean Kilbourne and Rosalind Gill to illuminate and explore two surf-centric Instagram accounts, both of which imagine a …
Stress Reactivity In Children Following An Academic Stressor: Associations And Interactions With Intrapersonal Characteristics, Maria L. Corbett
Stress Reactivity In Children Following An Academic Stressor: Associations And Interactions With Intrapersonal Characteristics, Maria L. Corbett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Previous research has shown that the intrapersonal characteristics (e.g., temperament) of children are associated closely with alterations in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary–adrenal (HPA) stress axis. However, consistently capturing direct associations between these characteristics and stress reactivity of the HPA axis has, at times, yielded disparate findings. Thus, using the Rothbart model of temperament (Rothbart & Derryberry, 1981) as a guide, the main goal of this project was to investigate and identify intrapersonal characteristics that moderate associations between other intrapersonal characteristics of the child and stress reactivity during development (e.g., trait by trait interactions). Additionally, study variables were assessed for …
Survival By Any Means: Race And Gender, Passing And Performance In Octavia Butler’S Parable Of The Sower And Parable Of The Talents, Micah R. Moreno
Survival By Any Means: Race And Gender, Passing And Performance In Octavia Butler’S Parable Of The Sower And Parable Of The Talents, Micah R. Moreno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This project focuses on race and gender in the works of author Octavia Butler. The primary texts analyzed are Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. In these novels, Butler alludes to slavery in antebellum America by drawing strong parallels between the roles race and gender played in the survival of the escaped slaves of America’s past and the role they play in the survival of the main character of Butler’s apocalyptic future. The themes of race and gender frequently intersect and maintain an important role throughout the novels. I argue that, by reading Butler’s novels within this …

Teacher Perceptions Of Technology Integration Professional Development In A 1:1 Chromebook Environment, Eleonora Yankelevich
Teacher Perceptions Of Technology Integration Professional Development In A 1:1 Chromebook Environment, Eleonora Yankelevich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A variety of computing devices are available in today’s classrooms, but they have not guaranteed the effective integration of technology. Nationally, teachers have ample devices, applications, productivity software, and digital audio and video tools. Despite all this, the literature suggests these tools are not employed to enhance student learning according to best practices. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe and understand perceptions of a technology integration professional development (TIPD) experience of elementary teachers at a suburban, independent school. The TIPD was an ongoing, 40-minute class led by a technology specialist, taking place in teachers’ classrooms, engaging …
The Directionality Of Person-Situation Transactions: Spill-Over Effects Among And Between Situation Experiences And Personality States, Ashley Bell Cooper
The Directionality Of Person-Situation Transactions: Spill-Over Effects Among And Between Situation Experiences And Personality States, Ashley Bell Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
To elucidate temporal sequences among and between person and situation variables, this work examines cross-measurement spill-overs between situation experiences S (on the Situational Eight DIAMONDS characteristics) and personality states P (on the Big Six HEXACO) in experience sampling data in two studies. Multilevel modeling of lagged data at tn-1 and non-lagged data at tn grants the opportunity to examine (a) the stability (P --> P, S --> S), (b) cross-sectional associations (S <--> P), and (c) cross-lagged associations among and between situation experiences and personality states (S --> P, P --> S).
The Effect Of Alliance Portfolio Size On Firm Performance Revisited: The Role Of Firm- And Portfolio-Level Contingencies, Barreto Tais Siqueira
The Effect Of Alliance Portfolio Size On Firm Performance Revisited: The Role Of Firm- And Portfolio-Level Contingencies, Barreto Tais Siqueira
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Alliance portfolios, or a firm collection of simultaneous alliances, have become common phenomena particularly in technology industries. These portfolios have been found to have a significant impact on firms’ financial performance. At the same time, there is little consensus regarding the direction of this effect. Findings have shown positive, negative, curvilinear, and non-significant relationships. In this dissertation, I employed an organizational learning perspective to investigate the effect of alliance portfolio size on firm financial performance. Using a sample of 343 firm-year observations in the U.S. software industry, I explored portfolio- and firm-level characteristics as moderators of this relationship. Findings provide …
The Diamonds At Work: Applying The Diamonds Dimensions To Occupations, Steven Bell
The Diamonds At Work: Applying The Diamonds Dimensions To Occupations, Steven Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Just as people can be described by traits, situations can be described by the “Situational Eight” DIAMONDS (Duty, Intellect, Adversity, Mating, pOsitivity, Negativity, Deception, Sociality) (Rauthmann et al., 2014). Based upon the common occurrence of situations in combinations unique to different occupations the current study sets out to (1) map the DIAMONDS dimensions into the workplace and (2) examine the relationships between the DIAMONDS dimensions and other measures of work contexts (Skill, Abilities, Knowledge, etc.). Through the use of a modified version of the S8* (Rauthmann & Sherman, 2014), the DIAMONDS dimensions were correlated with scored responses of either individuals …
The Affective Individual: The Influence Of Self-Structure On The Experience Of Discrete And Mixed Emotions, C. William Blackmon
The Affective Individual: The Influence Of Self-Structure On The Experience Of Discrete And Mixed Emotions, C. William Blackmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Coherence of self-concept refers to the ability to stabilize on a clear set of views about oneself. This aspect of self-structure is closely linked self-esteem, and similar evidence in emotion research suggests an intricate connection between the self-system and emotion. Evidence suggests that emotions of seemingly opposing valence such as happy and sad can co-occur (i.e., mixed emotion). This study validated a new set of emotional stimuli particularly to elicit mixed emotion and used these stimuli with a mouse task that allowed participants to report positive and negative emotions simultaneously. The study examined possible individual differences in discrete emotional response …
The Effect Of Stereoscopic Cues On Multiple Object Tracking In A 3d Virtual Environment, Steven Milanez Oliveira
The Effect Of Stereoscopic Cues On Multiple Object Tracking In A 3d Virtual Environment, Steven Milanez Oliveira
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Research on Multiple Object Tracking (MOT) has typically involved 2D displays where stimuli move in a single depth plane. However, under natural conditions, objects move in 3D which adds complexity to tracking. According to the spatial interference model, tracked objects have an inhibitory surround that when crossed causes tracking errors. How do these inhibitory fields translate to 3D space? Does multiple object tracking operate on a 2D planar projection, or is it in fact 3D? To investigate this, we used a fully immersive virtual-reality environment where participants were required to track 1 to 4 moving objects. We compared performance to …
The Evolution Of General Strain Theory: A Comprehensive Review And Test Of Robert Agnew’S 2002 Extension, Krystal Davidowitz
The Evolution Of General Strain Theory: A Comprehensive Review And Test Of Robert Agnew’S 2002 Extension, Krystal Davidowitz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis provides a comprehensive review of the evolution of Robert Agnew’s General Strain Theory of Delinquency, and tests his 2002 extension using two subsamples from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: Juveniles between 12 and 17, and “emerging” adults that are 18 years old. Including an “emerging” adult subsample makes this analysis one of the first full tests of adults. Additionally, this analysis is the first partial test of Agnew’s 2013 extension of General Strain Theory. Overall, the results of the analysis lend support to Agnew’s 2002 extension. Measures of strain are revealed to significantly effect …

The Effects Of Competition On Empathy And Prosociality, Corinne Gilad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The current research investigated the effects of competition on empathy and prosociality in two studies. Study 1 aimed to explore associations between competition and prosociality by asking participants to play a computer puzzle game that was either high or low on competitiveness, and then to complete measures of empathy, perspective taking, compassionate love and willingness to sacrifice for a romantic partner. Study 1 found a marginally significant difference across conditions for perspective taking, a marginally significant gender interaction for perspective taking, and a significant gender by condition interaction for compassionate love, in support of hypotheses that competition reduces prosocial responses …

The Impact Of Icoaching On Teacher-Delivered Opportunities To Respond, Kathleen M. Randolph
The Impact Of Icoaching On Teacher-Delivered Opportunities To Respond, Kathleen M. Randolph
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Employment coaching is essential for performing job duties and for developing and enhancing skills. Coaching in the school setting typically follows the traditional format of pre-conference, observe, and post-conference, where feedback on teaching performance is shared but often delayed. Professional development provides teachers with skills to enhance their teaching practice with little to no follow-up or support. The most effective way to produce change in the school setting is to show the connection between professional development and student performance, and iCoaching can help to bridge the gap. Research shows that effective feedback is immediate, systematic, positive, constructive, and detailed (Scheeler …
The Journey Of Art Doll: World-Building In Contemporary Narrative, Robin E. Taber
The Journey Of Art Doll: World-Building In Contemporary Narrative, Robin E. Taber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Games, movies, television, and interactive media make use of World-Building. World-Building essentially creates an elaborate invented universe in order to give a story context. In other words it generates a back-story designed to enhance the cathartic experience and promote engagement by the reader, viewer or participant. Some examples of World-Building include Halo, World of WarCraft and Game of Thrones. Stories need context to be fully understood and experienced. One describes a situation, the environment, sensations, smells, sounds and sensory perception to give the audience a fuller, richer experience. World-Building provides context through history, textures, laws, physics and motivations. The written …
The Impact Of Undergraduate Research Participation On Research Self-Efficacy, Tracy N. Baker
The Impact Of Undergraduate Research Participation On Research Self-Efficacy, Tracy N. Baker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Current literature confirms that self-efficacy, academic self-concept, and participation in undergraduate research influence the academic performance and aspirations of students. However, a gap in the literature remains as research has yet to explore whether students who have participated in research have a higher sense of research self-efficacy and academic self-concept than students who have not participated in these activities. In addition, it is unknown whether undergraduate researchers pursuing STEM degrees differ from students pursuing non-STEM degrees, nor if they vary by gender. The purpose of this study was to investigate the research self-efficacy and academic self-concept of undergraduate researchers, compare …
The Lived Experience Of Breastfeeding For Women With Perinatal Depression, Beth A. Pratt
The Lived Experience Of Breastfeeding For Women With Perinatal Depression, Beth A. Pratt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months provides numerous infant and maternal benefits. Yet mothers with risk factors, such as lower education, lower socioeconomic status, younger maternal age, planned cesarean birth, and anxiety and depression, are more likely to stop breastfeeding in the early postpartum period. Few studies have focused on perinatal depression as a risk factor for breastfeeding cessation. To tailor effective interventions, nurses must first understand the lived experience of breastfeeding for mothers at risk for perinatal depression. A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to elucidate the experience of breastfeeding for mothers with perinatal depression. The study was …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In order to explain the development of English and Spanish skills in children from Spanish-speaking homes in the United States, it is necessary to identify their sources of language exposure. Most research to date has focused on home language use. The aim of this study is to identify sources of English and Spanish exposure outside the home that bilingual children experience between the ages of 2 and 5 years. The present study focuses on 3 potential sources: grandparents, extracurricular activities, and early childcare and education settings. We ask how much English and Spanish exposure children receive, how that changes from …

The Relationship Between Mcgregor’S Leadership Theory And Happiness Among Higher Educational Leaders, Jeannette S. Sullivan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this research was to determine if a relationship exists between McGregor’s Leadership Theory and subjective states of well-being among higher educational leaders in state and community colleges in Florida. The underlying supposition was that the preference for what Douglas McGregor called Theory X or Theory Y assumptions, indicate intrinsic assumptions about human nature and are linked to subjective happiness. Quantitative data were collected through electronic administration of two surveys and demographic questions to higher educational leaders at 28 state and community colleges in the State of Florida. These instruments measured levels of well-being through the PERMA-Profiler instrument …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this collective case study was to discover the decision-making processes used by senior student affairs officers when making wicked decisions related to the retention of specialized, at-risk student populations. Wicked decisions are complex, resistant to resolutions, lead to other problems, and are essentially unique. In this study, decisions related to retention of Black males; students with mental health issues; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer student retention fall within the wicked problem category and were the focus of this study. These decisions are usually the responsibility of divisions of student affairs in higher education settings and …

Time Orientation And The Ability To Envision The Distant Future Of Higher Education In A Community College, Gisela M. Diaz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Although temporal issues affecting organizations and leaders have been researched, time orientation (preference for one or more of the present, past, and future time frames) and visioning ability of change agents within organizations remain open for additional investigation. This exploratory survey study compared self-reported time orientation (TO) and visioning ability ratings of administrators and faculty at a community college. The research added to the extant literature by contextualizing the measures of the key constructs and extending the research to a novel setting. Scores for all three time frames were assessed in contrast to studies that emphasize future orientation. In addition, …
Which Way Is It? Spatial Navigation And The Genetics Of Head Direction Cells, Joan C. Lora
Which Way Is It? Spatial Navigation And The Genetics Of Head Direction Cells, Joan C. Lora
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
From locating a secure home, foraging for food, running away from predators, spatial navigation is an integral part of everyday life. Multiple brain regions work together to form a three-dimensional representation of our environment; specifically, place cells, grid cells, border cells & head direction cells are thought to interact and influence one another to form this cognitive map. Head direction (HD) cells fire as the animal moves through space, according to directional orientation of the animal’s head with respect to the laboratory reference frame, and are therefore considered to represent the directional sense. Interestingly, inactivation of head direction cell-containing brain …
Tracing A Technological God: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Google And The Global Ramifications Of Its Media Proliferation, Benton Fazzolari
Tracing A Technological God: A Psychoanalytic Study Of Google And The Global Ramifications Of Its Media Proliferation, Benton Fazzolari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation makes the connection between the human drive, as described by psychoanalysis, to construct God and the construction of the technological entity, Google. Google constitutes the extension of the early Christian period God to the twenty-first century. From the examination of significant religious and theological texts by significant theologians (Augustine, Thomas, Luther, Calvin, etc.) that explain the nature of God, the analogous relationship of God to Google will open a psychoanalytic discourse that answers questions on the current state of human mediation with the world. Freud and, more significantly, Lacan’s work connects the human creation of God, ex nihilio, …
Valuing The Invaluable: Piquant Georgia Low-Country Marsh Ecosystem Services, Alyssa A. Wood
Valuing The Invaluable: Piquant Georgia Low-Country Marsh Ecosystem Services, Alyssa A. Wood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Coastal ecosystems, such as the salt marsh of the Georgia coast, have long been valued for decision-making purposes based on market-values of goods and services including: fishery landings, hedonic pricing of waterfront homes, and tourism dollars. These values do not show the full picture of services provided by these ecosystems. Using focus group discussions and key informant interviews I investigate socio-cultural values and benefits provided by salt marsh ecosystems in central coastal Georgia. Participants noted that through their experiences in marshes they developed a desire to be stewards. This desire, coupled with the industrial pollution, residential development, and sea-level rise …
