Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Throughout my career in special education, I have reconsidered my beliefs about disability. As I have transitioned from a special educator to a teacher trainer in India to an assistant professor in a Christian college, I have looked beyond limitations and deficits of my students to see individual uniqueness. In this article, I share my lived experience of people with severe special needs ministering to me in India, explore the lived experiences of other disability advocates, and describe the implications this has for my teaching at a Christian college.
Building A Community Of Christ In A Mathematics Classroom, Robert Bonner
Building A Community Of Christ In A Mathematics Classroom, Robert Bonner
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The prevalence of mathematics anxiety and math phobia is an accepted phenomenon in our culture today (Boaler, 2013; Kimball & Smith, 2013). Multiple research studies have been conducted investigating the levels of mathematics anxiety present in both preservice and in-service elementary education teachers (Bekdemir, 2010; Mizala, Martínez, & Martínez, 2015). This article describes how the creation of a learning community within a two-course sequence of mathematics content courses for elementary teachers addressed the fears and anxieties of a cohort of prospective female teachers. The learning community was founded on three perspectives: Palmer’s (1989) community of truth, Paul’s description of the …

Evidence-Based Assessment In Adapted Physical Education On Psychomotor Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis, Sam R. Diskin
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
There is little data to show evidence-based practices in adapted physical education and whether it is working or not. There is a lack of information currently on the frequency that assessments are being done, on the disabilities that are being assessed or should be assessed with each test, and on the uses of the assessments that are being done. The aim of this paper is to assess and synthesize all evidence-based practices on psychomotor outcomes in adapted physical education using a meta-analysis. Data was sourced from computerized searches using the following databases: SPORT Discus, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Pub Med (Medline), Cochrane …

Restoration Of Attentional Deficits After Concussion, Katharine B. Earle
Restoration Of Attentional Deficits After Concussion, Katharine B. Earle
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Difficulties with concentration and attention are among the most prevalent symptoms experienced after concussion. Rest has been the most common form of recovery from concussion; however, new research is suggesting mild mental exertion to be an effective aid in recovery. Drawing from Attention Restoration Theory, this study evaluated the idea that cognitive engagement with natural environments can mitigate post-concussion directed-attention deficits. A between subjects repeated measures design was used to test directed-attention after video exposure to restorative/nature and nonrestorative/city environments. Measures of mood, connectedness to environment, and symptomology scores were also collected. No meaningful difference between exposure type was found …
Effects Of A Post-Activation Potentiation Warm-Up On Submaximal Parallel Back Squat Volume, Rating Of Perceived Exertion, Peak Velocity, And Peak Power, Carlton Wei
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Resistance training (RT) is effective for improving athletic performance, with specific training loads and volumes dictating the adaptations. A warm-up is necessary to safely and effectively engage in RT: typically with a low intensity aerobic activity, stretching, and movement specific potentiating exercises. Post-activation potentiation (PAP) acutely increases muscular power following a conditioning contraction, though limited research has assessed its use for RT. The purpose of this study was to assess how a PAP warm-up protocol affects volume, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and peak velocity and power with 75%1RM in the barbell parallel back squat (PBS) exercise across 4 sets. …
School-To-Prison-Pipeline: The Factors That Cause It, And How We Can Prevent It, Alison L. Wittig
School-To-Prison-Pipeline: The Factors That Cause It, And How We Can Prevent It, Alison L. Wittig
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The “School-to-Prison pipeline” is an ongoing challenge and trend in the public school system in America due to inequity in the educational system, discriminatory policies towards students and families of color, and a lack of resources aimed at supporting at-risk youth and the economically disadvantaged within the community. Public schools have made continued progress in shifting their disciplinary policies away from punitive, “zero tolerance” models and towards positive behavioral interventions, but there continues to be a disproportionate number of students ending up in the school-to-prison-pipeline from economically disadvantaged communities and homes. Lawmakers continue to create policies in an effort to …
U.S. Commentary: Implications From The Family Options Study For Homeless And Child Welfare Services, Patrick J. Fowler
U.S. Commentary: Implications From The Family Options Study For Homeless And Child Welfare Services, Patrick J. Fowler
Brown School Faculty Publications
The Family Options Study provides an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the troubling link between family homelessness and child maltreatment. The rigorous design uses multiple methods to probe the impact of housing interventions on family preservation and reunification and the underlying mechanisms. Results show that ending homelessness keeps families together; however, once separated, families continue to struggle to reunify with children. Permanent housing subsidies represent a more efficient approach to promoting family stability among homeless families compared with temporary housing with supportive services. Results introduce a new phase of family homeless research, practice, and policy; further investigation must consider broad scale …

A review of the literature indicates that few studies have used artificial neural networks (ANNs) for data analysis in business and marketing research, even though there are many benefits to the use of ANNs. Therefore, this article discusses neural networks (NNs) that can be used in addition to or as an alternative to linear regression for data analysis in strategic marketing. The function and layout of NNs make them ideal for research dealing with nonlinear, incomplete, unspecified, or ‘fuzzy’ data and offer several advantages over linear regression. Unfortunately, in many marketing studies, the information being modeled is far from flawless …

Research summary: Strategy scholars increasingly conduct research in nontraditional contexts. Such efforts often require the assistance of third-party intermediaries who understand local culture, norms, and language. This reliance on intermediation in primary or secondary data collection can elicit agency breakdowns that call into question the reliability, analyzability, and interpretability of responses. Herein, we investigate the causes and consequences of intermediary bias in the form of faked data and we offer Response Pattern Analysis as a statistical solution for identifying and removing such problematic data. By explicating the effect, illustrating how we detected it, and performing a controlled field experiment in …
Is Retention Necessarily A Win? Outcomes Of Searching And Staying, Wendy R. Boswell, Richard G. Gardner, Jiexin Wang
Is Retention Necessarily A Win? Outcomes Of Searching And Staying, Wendy R. Boswell, Richard G. Gardner, Jiexin Wang
Faculty Publications
This research examines the issue of employee retention by considering what happens to employees that engage in the job search process yet end up staying with an organization. Grounded in the conceptualization of reluctant staying from Hom, Mitchell, Lee, and Griffeth (2012), we consider a potential downside of employee retention. Specifically, the study examines the psychological (i.e., job dissatisfaction, low organizational commitment) and behavioral detachment (i.e., neglect behavior, diminished job performance) employees may experience when they search for alternative employment yet ultimately stay with an organization. This study also examines the moderating role of the objective underlying the search behavior …

The study of interaction effects is critical for creating, extending, and bounding theory in organizational research. Integrating and extending prior work, we present a taxonomy of two-way interaction effects that can guide organizational scholars toward clearer, more precise ways of developing theory, advancing hypotheses, and interpreting results. Specifically, we identify three primary interaction types, including strengthening, weakening, and reversing effects. In addition, we explore subcategories within these interaction types. Our review of articles published in leading management and applied psychology journals from 2009 to 2013 supports the generalizability of this framework. We offer specific recommendations for using this taxonomy to …

There have been repeated calls for studies in behavioral science and human-computer interaction (HCI) research to measure participants’ actual behaviors. HCI research studies often use multiple constructs as perceived measures of behavior, which are captured using participants’ self-reports on surveys. Response biases, however, are a widespread threat to the validity of self-report measures. To mitigate this threat to validity, we propose that studies in HCI measure actual behaviors in appropriate contexts rather than solely perceptions. We report an example of using movements that reflect both actual behavior and behavioral changes measured within a health care IS usage context, specifically the …
Does The Use Of Medical Titles In The Clinical Setting Affect The Physician-Patient Relationship?, Maria Valdez Palomino
Does The Use Of Medical Titles In The Clinical Setting Affect The Physician-Patient Relationship?, Maria Valdez Palomino
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
In this thesis I argue that the title “doctor” negatively affects the physician-patient relationship. This conclusion is important, because this relationship is the cornerstone of medical care and has emotional, physical, and informational impacts on the patient, the physician, and the healthcare system overall. From the analysis of various anecdotes I show that patients often relinquish their autonomy in the presence of medical titles, and that this causes an imbalance in the power dynamics of the physician-patient relationship, which in turn can negatively affect patient care. Finally, I argue that abolishing medical titles would foster an environment where the ethical …

Cycles: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Smartphone Technology And Its Users Through Performance Art, Daniel Rico-Madrazo
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
When it comes to your phone, who is the user and who is being used? Cycles is a project that presents only a few of the many interactions between people and mobile technology in our modern world. The point is to address both the negative and positive effects of smartphone use, attempting to reconcile the love for modern mobile technology and those who find it lacking and even destructive socially. Smartphones are powerful tools, and can be utilized in positive ways. However, most applications on these devices are designed to be addictive and user friendly, and this results in numerous …

Forced Sterilization: The Blurred Line Between Justified And Illegitimate Coercion, Rosa M.E. Román
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Ninety years ago, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Virginia statute allowing state actors to forcibly sterilize those with hereditary forms of intellectual disability, in Buck v. Bell. Fifteen years later, the Court readdressed the concept of compulsory sterilization in the 1942 case, Skinner v. Oklahoma. Skinner v. Oklahoma failed to overturn Buck v. Bell, and as a result, the Supreme Court left an opening for state actors to forcibly sterilize members of their population. I consider the history of forced sterilization and the broad spectrum of views present today. In questioning if there’s a right …
Placebo Use In Clinical Practice, Lauren Lowy
Placebo Use In Clinical Practice, Lauren Lowy
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
This thesis examines placebos and their potential for use in clinical settings. I begin by defining “placebo” and “placebo effect” in various contexts, including associated biochemical mechanisms. I then discuss how expectation, conditioning, and patient-physician interactions influence the magnitude of the placebo effect on patients. My research delves into the difficulty of defining and measuring the placebo effect given its subjective nature, and supports the harnessing of this effect as a viable treatment option for certain conditions, including but not limited to depression and pain management. Finally, I address the accompanying ethical concerns of placebo use in clinical practice in …
Age Related And Methamphetamine-Associated Changes To Basolateral Amygdala Spine Density In Young To Adolescent Animals, Jillian Herman
Age Related And Methamphetamine-Associated Changes To Basolateral Amygdala Spine Density In Young To Adolescent Animals, Jillian Herman
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Early development and adolescence are critical periods for humans and rodent brain development which makes teenage drug use particularly worrisome. We previously demonstrated that dendritic spine density increased following METH training in adult animals. Given the importance of these critical periods for neuronal development and the importance of dendritic spines for memory formation the first aim was to examine basolateral amygdala (BLA) spine density in mice postnatal day 16-20 and 28-35. Furthermore, the effect of METH training on BLA dendritic spine density in adolescent animals was also examined. We found that there were no significant differences in the spine density …
Incentivized Reviews: An Investigation Of Online Consumer Review Bias, Jesse Darrow
Incentivized Reviews: An Investigation Of Online Consumer Review Bias, Jesse Darrow
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Online reviews play an important role in contemporary society, having been used to predict market trends and influence industry changes. In addition, many consumers depend on online reviews when deciding which products to buy. Recently, a large group of online venders have started incentivizing shoppers by providing product discounts in exchange for reviews. Some researchers believe that reviewers who are compensated for writing reviews will publish higher-than-average reviews, which may diminish the overall usefulness of online reviews as genuine predictors of product quality and purchaser satisfaction. First, this paper establishes a method for differentiating and isolating incentivized reviews. Then, this …
Optogenetic Control Of Grooming In Nf1 Mutant Drosophila Melanogaster, Éamonn Byrnes
Optogenetic Control Of Grooming In Nf1 Mutant Drosophila Melanogaster, Éamonn Byrnes
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Neurofibromatosis is an inherited neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the tumor suppressor gene NF1 in humans. Symptoms include nerve tumors, learning impairment, and ADHD. The cognitive effects of neurofibromatosis were studied by using grooming as a behavioral phenotype of Nf1 mutations in Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies indicate Nf1 mutations increase grooming up to seven times. If Nf1 mutant flies are optogenetically stimulated, will grooming levels increase? The CsChrimson protein can be stimulated with light to excite motor neurons of flies and initiate grooming. Drosophila subjects were placed in a chamber, stimulated with red light, and a camera recorded grooming …

On The Rag, On The Web: An Analysis Of Textual And Visual Content Found On Traditional And Alternative Menstrual Product Websites, Genesis Marie R. Buendia
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Menstruation is historically a taboo topic, and people see periods as a curse rather than a natural experience of the body. Past media content such as menstrual advertisements found in magazines and on televisions often depicted women doing activities as if they did not have a period. People bought traditional menstrual products to be free from embarrassment only to be controlled by consumerism. These advertisements were one of the few sources of information regarding menstruation due to the silence on the topic. Present media content found on menstrual product websites, however, show a shift in ideology. I argue that, unlike …
A Phenomenological Investigation Of Counselor Competencies In Working With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Katherine A. Feather
A Phenomenological Investigation Of Counselor Competencies In Working With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Katherine A. Feather
Theses and Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a profound diagnosis that affects 1% of the world’s population (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]; 2015a). Counselors can play a dynamic role in treating ASD and promoting greater life satisfaction; however, the counseling field has not identified how counselors develop their competencies working with children with ASD and their families. Therefore, the phenomenological investigation examined the experiences of 15 counselors in the field and their self-perceived competencies of treating ASD. A model of ASD counseling competencies development emerged from the data. Participants described the developmental components of Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies …

Big data analytics have become an increasingly important component for firms across advanced economies. This paper examines the quality dynamics in big data environment that are linked with enhancing business value and firm performance. The study identifies that system quality (i.e., system reliability, accessibility, adaptability, integration, response time and privacy) and information quality (i.e., completeness, accuracy, format and currency) are key to enhance business value and firm performance in a big data environment. The study also proposes that the relationship between quality and firm performance is mediated by business value of big data. Drawing on the resource based theory and …

The paper aims to explain the technology of emergence of information. Our research proves that information as communicational product is the result of processing within some operations, actions, mechanisms and strategies of informational material meanings. Are determined eight computational-communicative operations of building information. Information occurs in two communication phases, syncretic and the segregation-synthetic. The syncretic phase consists of four operations: referral of significant field, primary delimitation of information, detection-looking information and an anticipative-draft constitution (feedforward). The segregation-synthetic phase also includes four operations: discrimination, identification, interpretation and confrontation (feedback). In the future we will investigate informational actions, mechanisms and strategies.
