Evaluation Of Preformed Particle Gel As A Diverting Agent For Acidizing, Bo Wei Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Preformed Particle Gel As A Diverting Agent For Acidizing, Bo Wei

Masters Theses

"Preformed particle gels (PPGs) have been developed and successfully used to improve conformance in heterogeneous reservoirs. However, no research has been reported to show their potential diverting applications in acidizing because of their unknown performance in this process. This work targets on evaluating the potential of PPGs to be used as diverting agents and factors influencing the diverting performance.

The swelling properties of three types of PPGs (PPG #1, #2, and #3) were first studied in brine and acid, including the swelling kinetics and equilibrium, PPG strength, and deswelling performance. Effects of different brine concentration, acid concentration, and temperature were …

Development And Implementation Of Star Tracker Based Attitude Determination, Casey Grant Smith Jan 2017

Development And Implementation Of Star Tracker Based Attitude Determination, Casey Grant Smith

Masters Theses

"As interest in nanosatellites grows within the university community, the demand for inexpensive, space-grade hardware grows as well. Star trackers can be a luxury item for some spacecraft and therefore are often not considered due to their cost. Ideally, a star tracker could be built using inexpensive parts so long as the software is available. Unlike many other attitude determination instruments, star trackers are renowned for their high accuracy, yielding accurate and precise attitude estimates. However, development of this software can be overwhelming for the university settling, especially when multiple missions are on hand. If these instruments were readily available …

Overview Of Co₂ Leakage Problems And Sealants For Co₂ Leakage Remediation, Shudai Peng Jan 2017

Overview Of Co₂ Leakage Problems And Sealants For Co₂ Leakage Remediation, Shudai Peng

Masters Theses

"Excessive Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) emission has become a serious issue and caused lots of environmental problems. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) program has been developed to reduce the CO₂ content in the atmosphere. CO₂ storage has been targeted mainly on depleted oil or gas reservoirs and deep saline aquifers. However, leakage could occur through wellbores, cap rocks, formation faults, and fractures during and after CO₂ injection. To minimize the risk, different types of sealants have been investigated to prevent CO₂ leaks. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive review of the materials which could be used as …

Characterizing Groundwater Flow At Fort Leonard Wood Using Universal Cokriging With Trend Removal, Rachel Mae Uetrecht Jan 2017

Characterizing Groundwater Flow At Fort Leonard Wood Using Universal Cokriging With Trend Removal, Rachel Mae Uetrecht

Masters Theses

"Groundwater elevation interpolation is necessary for the prediction of groundwater flow direction and contaminant transport. Kriging is a geostatistical tool commonly used to interpolate groundwater elevation. Kriging requires a relatively large number of monitoring wells at the site of interest. The variogram model is a crucial element to the kriging equations. The variogram modelling process is an iterative procedure that is often very time consuming. This study presents a literature based approach that provides a point of departure for the variogram modelling process as well as other kriging parameters. A literature database is developed in order to provide insight and …

Preformed Particle Gel Conformance Control Performance In Partially Opened Fracture And Fully Opened Fracture Systems, Ghith Ali Ahmed Biheri Jan 2017

Preformed Particle Gel Conformance Control Performance In Partially Opened Fracture And Fully Opened Fracture Systems, Ghith Ali Ahmed Biheri

Masters Theses

"Conformance problems, such as reservoir heterogeneity can result in a significant decrease in oil recovery, and an excessive water production. Millimeter particle gels (PPG) have been used as conformance control agents to plug open fractures, however, very little research has been conducted to study their ability to plug partially open fractures. This research studies the ability of the PPG to plug partially open fracture to improve conformance and increase recovery in oil reservoirs. Rectangular Sandstone cores were used to conduct the experiments. Fracture widths used include 2, 3.5, 5 mm. For each fracture width, four gel strengths were used; gel …

Sparse Emission Source Microscopy For Rapid Emission Source Imaging, Ling Zhang Jan 2017

Sparse Emission Source Microscopy For Rapid Emission Source Imaging, Ling Zhang

Masters Theses

"In Paper I, Sparse Emission Source Microscopy (ESM) methodology will be introduced and discussed for the localization of major EMI radiation sources in complex and large systems. Traditional ESM method takes abundant and uniformly-distributed scanning points on the scanning plane using a robotic system, which can provide high-quality source images but consumes too much time. This section presents a sparse and nonuniform sampling technique for ESM, which is more time-efficient in identifying major radiation sources, even though the image quality is sacrificed. The feasibility of sparse sampling is mathematically proved, and it is shown that increasing number of points increases …

Diffusion And Mechanical Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Enabled Diffusion Controlled Materials, Joseph Louis Volpe Jan 2017

Diffusion And Mechanical Characterization Of Nanoparticle-Enabled Diffusion Controlled Materials, Joseph Louis Volpe

Masters Theses

"Nanoparticle-enabled diffusion control has been shown to rapidly refine multiphase microstructures during slowly cooled casting. This thesis characterizes the diffusion and the mechanical properties of nanoparticle-enabled diffusion controlled materials. To characterize diffusion properties, in situ characterization is performed to verify the nanoparticle enabled diffusion control mechanism. Materials with nanoparticles were observed to decrease the diffusion coefficient by at least one order of magnitude under similar melting conditions as compared to materials without nanoparticles. To understand mechanical properties, the nanoparticles that assembled at the growing interface were characterized under mechanical tensile stress. Nanoparticle-enabled interfaces were observed to improve the interface bond …

Classification Of Basal Cell Carcinoma Using Telangiectatic Vessels And Machine Learning, Hemanth Yadav Aradhyula Jan 2017

Classification Of Basal Cell Carcinoma Using Telangiectatic Vessels And Machine Learning, Hemanth Yadav Aradhyula

Masters Theses

“Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most common types of skin cancer in the United States. Early detection of BCC by noninvasive techniques can decrease delay in treatment and save cost. A recent study estimated that 5.4 million cases of non-melanocytic skin cancer (NMSC) occur each year in the US. BCC accounts for 50% of NMSC cases. Telangiectasia, which appears in most BCCs is an important feature for identification of BCC for an automatic diagnostic system. In this thesis, three methods for detection of telangiectasia present in dermoscopy lesion image (DI) were proposed. Detected telangiectasia in DI was …

A Study Of The Potential Applications Of Am241, And Determining The Feasibility Of Using Gamma Spectroscopy For Future Physical Validation, Eric A. Feissle

Masters Theses

“Am241 is typically produced via Pu241 decay in a uranium fueled reactor. Presence of Am241 can be used as the age estimation tool for spent fuel, which is a focus of this thesis along with the interest of the measurement and the ratio of production rates of Am241’s activation products; Americium-242 and its first excited state of Americium-242m. MCNP models of the core and BEGe 3825 detector were built. These models were compared with established and physical measurements of gamma/x-ray standards that were available at the reactor. Thermal fluxes at 200 kW for potential foils centered in the source holder …

An Investigation Of Borax For Sealing Inflow From Berea Sandstone, Tri-Tris Bao Nguyen Jan 2017

An Investigation Of Borax For Sealing Inflow From Berea Sandstone, Tri-Tris Bao Nguyen

Masters Theses

"Well inflow control is a major challenge for the oil and gas industry. Erle Haliburton revolutionized well inflow control with his patent for cementing oil wells in 1921. Soon after, cement became the accepted material to establish well integrity and has been ever since. Cement is used in all phases of the well life cycle, and it is expected to hold indefinitely once set. Yet based on the nature of cement and the placement techniques, flow pathways may develop from improper cementing jobs or from cement degradation over time. Well integrity is especially crucial for wellbore plugging and abandonment, since …

Phytoforensics: Applications In Vapor Intrusion Assessment, Jordan Lee Wilson Jan 2017

Phytoforensics: Applications In Vapor Intrusion Assessment, Jordan Lee Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations

"Vapor intrusion (VI) occurs when contaminants in the vapor phase migrate in the shallow subsurface and enter buildings through cracks, seams, and gaps and has been recognized as a serious human-health threat as occupants are exposed to potentially harmful concentrations over long periods of time. The VI pathway has recently (2017) been identified as a primary exposure pathway and implemented into the Hazard Ranking System for inclusion on the Nation Priorities List. However, assessing VI and human exposure is not simple and current methods are time-, cost-, and labor-intensive; intrusive; and temporally and spatially variability. Trees are ideal candidates for …

Numerical Investigation On Nonlocal Problems With The Fractional Laplacian, Siwei Duo Jan 2017

Numerical Investigation On Nonlocal Problems With The Fractional Laplacian, Siwei Duo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Nonlocal models have recently become a powerful tool for studying complex systems with long-range interactions or memory effects, which cannot be described properly by the traditional differential equations. So far, different nonlocal (or fractional differential) models have been proposed, among which models with the fractional Laplacian have been well applied. The fractional Laplacian (-Δ)α/2 represents the infinitesimal generator of a symmetric α-stable Lévy process. It has been used to describe anomalous diffusion, turbulent flows, stochastic dynamics, finance, and many other phenomena. However, the nonlocality of the fractional Laplacian introduces considerable challenges in its mathematical modeling, numerical simulations, and mathematical …

Impact Of Data On Litigation: Enhancing Cybersecurity In The Private Sector By Means Of Civil Liability Lawsuits - The Connie Francis Effect, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

In order to explore the threats posed by cybersecurity breaches, first outline the steps taken by the government to address those threats in private sector economy, and then call attention to the ultimate solution, which will most certainly spur private businesses to create a more secure cyber environment for the American people - a Connie Francis-styled cyber civil action lawsuit. Technological advances opened up the unfathomable marvels of cyberspace and, by so doing, spawned a modern world that is now completely dependent on cyber, particularly in the context of sustaining and operating our critical infrastructure. Unfortunately, if supervisory control and …

Invisible, But Not Transparent: An Analysis Of The Data Privacy Issues That Could Be Implicated By The Widespread Use Of Connected Vehicles, Emilio R. Longoria Jan 2017

Invisible, But Not Transparent: An Analysis Of The Data Privacy Issues That Could Be Implicated By The Widespread Use Of Connected Vehicles, Emilio R. Longoria

Faculty Articles

In 2015, the U.S. Department of Transportation began the first phase of its 50-month program to introduce connected vehicles to American roadways. While many have focused on the potential traffic safety benefits wide-scale implementation of connected vehicle technology could ultimately bring about, few have discussed the potentially serious data privacy issues that connected vehicles could create. Although few know the exact technological capabilities connected vehicles will have, it is likely that they will be designed to regularly transmit highly sensitive private information over a relatively unsecure network. This paper analyzes the potential privacy issues that could be implicated by such …

Department of Medicine

The last few decades have seen substantial growth in the populations of competitive athletes and highly active people (CAHAP). Although vigorous physical exercise is an effective way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease, CAHAP remain susceptible to inherited and acquired CV disease, and may be most at risk for adverse CV outcomes during intense physical activity. Traditionally, multidisciplinary teams comprising athletic trainers, physical therapists, primary care sports medicine physicians, and orthopedic surgeons have provided clinical care for CAHAP. However, there is increasing recognition that a care team including qualified CV specialists optimizes care delivery for CAHAP. In recognition …

Reining In Internet-Age Expansion Of Exemption 7(C): Towards A Tort Law Approach For Ferreting Out Legitimate Privacy Concerns And Unwarranted Intrusions Under Foia, Clay Calvert, Austin Vining, Sebastian Zarate

SMU Law Review

Using the July 2016 federal appellate court decision in Detroit Free Press, Inc. v. U.S. Department of Justice as an analytical springboard, this article explores the expansion of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Exemption 7(C) in the Internet era. In Detroit Free Press, the Sixth Circuit recognized a privacy interest in mug shots under Exemption 7(C). The practical impact of the decision is to uphold the general policy of the U.S. Marshals Service not to release mug shots. This article illustrates the yawning gap between tort law, which this article argues would deny recovery for the Internet posting of …

The Unbearable Lightness Of Alternative Dispute Resolution: Critical Thoughts On Fairness And Formality, Richard Delgado Jan 2017

The Unbearable Lightness Of Alternative Dispute Resolution: Critical Thoughts On Fairness And Formality, Richard Delgado

SMU Law Review

Years ago, I published Fairness and Formality: Minimizing the Risk of Prejudice in Alternative Dispute Resolution in Wisconsin Law Review. Arriving in the early years of the deformalization movement, Fairness and Formality sounded a warning about the risks this conflict resolution approach poses for disempowered disputants. Coming on the heels of an article in the same vein by Owen Fiss, Fairness & Formality attracted attention in part because its message ran counter to the prevailing ideology, according to which alternative dispute resolution is superior in many respects to the in-court variety—cheaper, faster, and friendlier, particularly for the uninitiated.

Soon, however, …

Implicit Bias And Prejudice In Mediation, Carol Izumi Jan 2017

Implicit Bias And Prejudice In Mediation, Carol Izumi

SMU Law Review

Mediators aspire and endeavor to meet their ethical duty of “neutrality” in mediation. Yet their ability to actually conduct mediations without bias, prejudice, or favoritism toward any party is extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible. Research shows that unconscious mental processes involving stereotypes and attitudes affect our judgments, perceptions, and behavior toward others. Implicit bias, the automatic association of stereotypes and attitudes with social groups, may produce discriminatory responses toward parties despite a mediator’s best efforts at creating an outwardly even-handed process. Even the most well-intentioned and egalitarian mediators must actively engage in bias reduction strategies to mitigate prejudice in mediation.

The Biology Of Climate Change: The Effects Of Changing Climate On Migrating And Over-Wintering Species At A High-Elevation Field Station, Carrie A. Wu, Ellwein Amy

Biology Faculty Publications

Students engage with long-term environmental and phenology data sets (spanning over 40 years) collected at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, a high-elevation field station in Colorado, to explore the effects of climate change on the phenology of migrating and hibernating species. After becoming familiar with the geographic context, people involved with the data collection, and organisms studied through background readings and videos, students explore the raw data set in Excel or using an interactive data visualization tool. In small groups, students reproduce figures and regressions from Inouye et al. (2000) based on those data, then expand their analyses with data …

The Neurobiological Mechanisms Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder And Chronic Stress, Michelle A Patriquin, Sanjay J Mathew Jan 2017

The Neurobiological Mechanisms Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder And Chronic Stress, Michelle A Patriquin, Sanjay J Mathew

Staff and Researcher Publications

Two classification systems are now at the forefront of clinical psychiatric research: (1) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition and (2) the National Institutes of Mental Health Research Domain Criteria. Herein, we propose that these two classification systems are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, and when combined provide important information for understanding aspects of the pathophysiology related to Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The neurobiological literature for GAD and one relevant research domain criteria component, sustained threat, are reviewed from multiple units of analysis (genetic, neuroimaging, neuroendocrine, and psychophysiological). It is hypothesized that generating a comprehensive, biologically based understanding of the …

Serious mental illness (SMI) is disabling, and current interventions are ineffective for many. This exploratory study sought to demonstrate the feasibility of applying topological data analysis (TDA) to resting-state functional connectivity data obtained from a heterogeneous sample of 235 adult inpatients to identify a biomarker of treatment response. TDA identified two groups based on connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and striatal regions: patients admitted with greater functional connectivity between these regions evidenced less improvement from admission to discharge than patients with lesser connectivity between them. TDA identified a potential biomarker of an attenuated treatment response among inpatients with SMI. Insofar …

Love As Dialogue: Finding Human Connection In Conversation, Iliamaris Rivera-Walter Jan 2017

Love As Dialogue: Finding Human Connection In Conversation, Iliamaris Rivera-Walter

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Dialogue is a conversation situated in a view of existence as relational (Bakhtin, 1981; Buber, 1970). As a result, it evokes love—love as the constant companion to human experience that allows for collaboration, co-existence, and evolution (Maturana & Verden-Zöller, 2008). Dialogue, and its potential to generate love, offers persons the ability to understand how love can be activated within relationships and in daily encounters as a result of dialogical engagement. It also holds implications for the field of family therapy, including the nature and purpose of therapy, as well as training and practice. In order to understand how love and …

The Delicate Process And Relational Style Of Solution Focused Brief Therapy: Ericksonian Hypnotherapy Resemblances In Sfbt, Annette Bovee-Akyurek Jan 2017

The Delicate Process And Relational Style Of Solution Focused Brief Therapy: Ericksonian Hypnotherapy Resemblances In Sfbt, Annette Bovee-Akyurek

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) is an approach that facilitates movement of problems toward solutions. If applied as Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer intended, this approach requires a “delicate process” of attentive observational skills and use of language. This delicate process can be seen in SFBT with several resemblances of Ericksonian hypnotherapy. Through James Paul Gee’s discourse analysis, these resemblances were explored in two commercially available videos of SFBT sessions facilitated by Insoo Kim Berg. Both SFBT features and Ericksonian features were noted in these sessions, as well as an overlap of both approaches, and Ericksonian resemblances in …

Testing A Theory Of Sense Of Community And Community Responsibility In Organizations: An Empirical Assessment Of Predictive Capacity On Employee Well-Being And Organizational Citizenship., Neil Boyd, Branda Nowell

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper attempts to advance our understanding of the experience of community in organizational settings by empirically testing a theory of sense of community responsibility (SOC-R) in relation to traditional measures of sense of community [SOC] on outcomes of employee well-being and organizational citizenship. Findings support the notion that SOC is a better predictor of employee well-being while SOC-R more strongly predicts organizational citizenship behavior. The findings add new knowledge to the literature on the experience of community in organizations, and represent an important contribution to our understanding of the factors that drive employee action and well-being at work.

Syntactic Change And The Rise Of Transitivity, James Lavine Jan 2017

Syntactic Change And The Rise Of Transitivity, James Lavine

Faculty Journal Articles

This paper analyzes the historical divergence of predicates marked with old passive neuter -no/-to in Polish and Ukrainian. It is argued that the locus of change leading to the rise of the transitivity property involved a rearrangement of morphologically-eroded voice morphology. Despite the surface similarity of the Polish and Ukrainian constructions, their divergent distribution in the modern languages indicates that grammaticalization of the old passive morpheme proceeded along different pathways, implicating the internal structure of vP, and creating new accusative case-assigning possibilities.

Manifestations Of Classical Physics In The Quantum Evolution Of Correlated Spin States In Pulsed Nmr Experiments, Martin K. Ligare Jan 2017

Manifestations Of Classical Physics In The Quantum Evolution Of Correlated Spin States In Pulsed Nmr Experiments, Martin K. Ligare

Faculty Journal Articles

Multiple-pulse NMR experiments are a powerful tool for the investigation of mole- cules with coupled nuclear spins. The product operator formalism provides a way to understand the quantum evolution of an ensemble of weakly coupled spins in such experiments using some of the more intuitive concepts of classical physics and semi- classical vector representations. In this paper I present a new way in which to inter- pret the quantum evolution of an ensemble of spins. I recast the quantum problem in terms of mixtures of pure states of two spins whose expectation values evolve identi- cally to those of classical …
