Propensity Of Predator Mimicry In Wild Steller's Jays, Trinity C. Tippin Jan 2017

Propensity Of Predator Mimicry In Wild Steller's Jays, Trinity C. Tippin

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Avian vocal mimicry has been described in a variety of contexts, suggesting its function is multifaceted within and across species; however, basic empirical data describing mimetic signal prevalence and context is lacking for numerous species. I examined occurrence and context of mimicked red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) calls over a 12-month period in a wild population of 49 individually color-marked Steller’s jays (Cyanocitta stelleri) and reviewed the occurrence of the behavior in historic re-sight data. I documented mimicry of red-shouldered hawk calls in 14 of 49 (28.6%) jays during the study. Hawk mimicry occurred more often during …

An Examination Of Water Consumption During And After Severe Drought In Coastal Stands Of Douglas-Fir In The Pacific Northwest, Kirsten Reddy Jan 2017

An Examination Of Water Consumption During And After Severe Drought In Coastal Stands Of Douglas-Fir In The Pacific Northwest, Kirsten Reddy

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The Pacific Northwest region is predicted to encounter rising temperatures over the next century, ultimately leading to less water storage during seasonal drought periods. Vast coniferous forests dependent upon this storage and will encounter periods of increased stress due to the lessening of available water supply. Under these conditions, stream flows will be directly affected by the forests competing for freshwater sources. Thinning treatments have been investigated as a means to compensate for increased water use by even-aged forest stands left over from past logging-practices.

This study was completed on two sites within Humboldt County, CA: one inland site with …

School-To-Prison-Pipeline: The Factors That Cause It, And How We Can Prevent It, Alison L. Wittig Jan 2017

School-To-Prison-Pipeline: The Factors That Cause It, And How We Can Prevent It, Alison L. Wittig

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The “School-to-Prison pipeline” is an ongoing challenge and trend in the public school system in America due to inequity in the educational system, discriminatory policies towards students and families of color, and a lack of resources aimed at supporting at-risk youth and the economically disadvantaged within the community. Public schools have made continued progress in shifting their disciplinary policies away from punitive, “zero tolerance” models and towards positive behavioral interventions, but there continues to be a disproportionate number of students ending up in the school-to-prison-pipeline from economically disadvantaged communities and homes. Lawmakers continue to create policies in an effort to …

Ownership Structures And Financing Options For Solar Energy Generation In The Redwood Coast Energy Authority Service Area, Mahayla Ca-Va Slackerelli Jan 2017

Ownership Structures And Financing Options For Solar Energy Generation In The Redwood Coast Energy Authority Service Area, Mahayla Ca-Va Slackerelli

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Ownership structures and financing sources for photovoltaic (PV) solar arrays have a large effect on the economic feasibility of a project. This thesis examines potential ownership structure and financing combinations for a one-megawatt PV solar array in Humboldt County. The options deemed suitable for the context of the project are discussed qualitatively. A subset of the financing options and ownership structures are modeled using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s System Advisory Model to gauge their economic viability.

Access to the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and other tax advantages are the most crucial variables for a competitive solar array. Not all …

Seasonal Fish And Invertebrate Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn Jan 2017

Seasonal Fish And Invertebrate Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The majority of Northern California estuaries are small, flooded, river valleys that are largely unstudied due to their small sizes and remote locations. Yet these estuaries serve as important nursery areas for many marine fish species including rockfish, flatfish, smelt, and herring, and they are vital to anadromous species such as Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Steelhead (O. mykiss). I sampled the summer and winter fish and invertebrate communities of the Big, Mad, and Ten Mile river estuaries. Fish were sampled via beach seine or fyke net and invertebrates were sampled via benthic cores, June 2014-June …

Education Of Children With Disabilities In New Delhi: When Does Exclusion Occur?, Parul Bakhshi, Ganesh M. Babulal, Jean Francois Trani

Brown School Faculty Publications

In the new Sustainable Development Goal 4, quality of education defined as equity and inclusion alongside traditional learning outcomes, has replaced the narrow goal of access to primary education stipulated in the Millennium Development Goal 2. Since 2000, considerable progress has been made towards improving access to school for children in India, yet questions remain regarding not just children with disabilities' access and acquisition of basic learning skills, but also completion of learning cycles. Methods and findings Between November, 2, 2011 and June 20th 2012, we interviewed 1294 households about activity limitations and functioning difficulties associated with a health problem …

Preliminary Findings & Spectral Energy Distributions For Nearby E+A Galaxies Using The Manga Survey, Olivia A. Weaver Jan 2017

Preliminary Findings & Spectral Energy Distributions For Nearby E+A Galaxies Using The Manga Survey, Olivia A. Weaver

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Utilizing data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) Survey MPL-4, of the latest generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we identified fourteen post-starburst (E+A) systems that lie within the Green Valley zone. We identify the E+As by their SDSS single fiber spectrum and u-r color, then confirmed their classification as post-starburst by coding/plotting methods and spectral synthesis programs, as well as with their Spectral Energy Distributions from 0.15μm to 22μm, using GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE data. We produced maps of Gaussian-fitted fluxes, equivalent widths, stellar velocities, metallicities and age. We also produced spectral line ratio diagrams …

Environmental Enrichment And Social Recognition In Pten+/- Mice, Farrah Tygar Jan 2017

Environmental Enrichment And Social Recognition In Pten+/- Mice, Farrah Tygar

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be can be caused by numerous different genetic abnormalities, one of which is Pten haploinsufficiency. There is some evidence to suggest that environmental enrichment can decrease the symptoms of ASD and Pten mutant mice have been shown to have altered social behaviors. Therefore, Pten and WT mice were raised either in standard or environmentally enriched cages and these mice were then tested for social recognition. WT females in both environmentally enriched and standard cages and Pten males raised in environmentally enriched cages can recognize and distinguish between other mice. Pten females raised in both standard …

Performing Fat: The Creation Of The “Fat” Female In 20th Century America, Leah Turner Jan 2017

Performing Fat: The Creation Of The “Fat” Female In 20th Century America, Leah Turner

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The body of the “fat” female in America is a place of convergence for many different conflicting social ideas. Feminist social theory has only recently begun to recognize the “fat” female body as a battleground where social anxieties and inequalities have not only been built, but justified as well. While current academic research has explained the modern “fat” woman and the Freak Show “Fat Lady” separately, rarely has there been a line connecting them theoretically. The purpose of this research is to critically analyze and contextualize the created role of “fat” women throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. …

Does The Use Of Medical Titles In The Clinical Setting Affect The Physician-Patient Relationship?, Maria Valdez Palomino Jan 2017

Does The Use Of Medical Titles In The Clinical Setting Affect The Physician-Patient Relationship?, Maria Valdez Palomino

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this thesis I argue that the title “doctor” negatively affects the physician-patient relationship. This conclusion is important, because this relationship is the cornerstone of medical care and has emotional, physical, and informational impacts on the patient, the physician, and the healthcare system overall. From the analysis of various anecdotes I show that patients often relinquish their autonomy in the presence of medical titles, and that this causes an imbalance in the power dynamics of the physician-patient relationship, which in turn can negatively affect patient care. Finally, I argue that abolishing medical titles would foster an environment where the ethical …

Daca Eligible Students Should Not Be Removed From This Country And Should Be Eligible For Advantages Like Financial Aid, Selene C. Vázquez Jan 2017

Daca Eligible Students Should Not Be Removed From This Country And Should Be Eligible For Advantages Like Financial Aid, Selene C. Vázquez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The United States is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy and equality. Many individuals leave their home countries in the hope of enjoying these American ideals. The young children who are brought along on the journey quickly assimilate, yet as they grow older society teaches them they are different. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an executive order, allows certain unauthorized immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive a renewable deferred action from deportation and a work permit. Drawing on legal scholarship and works of political theory, I argue that if these minors can prove they are people …

A Comparison Of Stressing Techniques Of Haematococcus Pluvialis, Lauren Smiarowski Jan 2017

A Comparison Of Stressing Techniques Of Haematococcus Pluvialis, Lauren Smiarowski

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater species of microalgae, is one of the most important sources of natural astaxanthin, a keto-carotenoid of high value to the pharmaceutical industry. Astaxanthin possesses antioxidant and anticancer properties as well as serving as food coloration. Production of astaxanthin from natural sources is limited, and microalgae is a promising source to meet the increasing demand. Three strains of H. pluvialis from various culture collections, Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP 34/8), Nation Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES-144), and Scandinavian Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (SCCAP K-0048), were tested in different conditions to compare the synthesis …

Cycles: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Smartphone Technology And Its Users Through Performance Art, Daniel Rico-Madrazo Jan 2017

Cycles: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Smartphone Technology And Its Users Through Performance Art, Daniel Rico-Madrazo

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

When it comes to your phone, who is the user and who is being used? Cycles is a project that presents only a few of the many interactions between people and mobile technology in our modern world. The point is to address both the negative and positive effects of smartphone use, attempting to reconcile the love for modern mobile technology and those who find it lacking and even destructive socially. Smartphones are powerful tools, and can be utilized in positive ways. However, most applications on these devices are designed to be addictive and user friendly, and this results in numerous …

Forced Sterilization: The Blurred Line Between Justified And Illegitimate Coercion, Rosa M.E. Román Jan 2017

Forced Sterilization: The Blurred Line Between Justified And Illegitimate Coercion, Rosa M.E. Román

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Ninety years ago, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Virginia statute allowing state actors to forcibly sterilize those with hereditary forms of intellectual disability, in Buck v. Bell. Fifteen years later, the Court readdressed the concept of compulsory sterilization in the 1942 case, Skinner v. Oklahoma. Skinner v. Oklahoma failed to overturn Buck v. Bell, and as a result, the Supreme Court left an opening for state actors to forcibly sterilize members of their population. I consider the history of forced sterilization and the broad spectrum of views present today. In questioning if there’s a right …

Toward A Mathematics For Life: Whitehead On Education, William Parker Jan 2017

Toward A Mathematics For Life: Whitehead On Education, William Parker

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The twentieth century mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, conceived the ideal education to be an adventure of the human spirit whereby the manifold aspects of the individual’s capacities are explored and developed. It’s not clear how much mathematics, viewed as a dry mechanical activity consisting of mere technical calculation, could contribute to education so conceived. Yet Whitehead considered mathematical training crucial for developing mental capacity in its abstract, general, and particular operations. Mathematical activity by its very nature promotes the modes of engagement that constitute the ideal education. Understanding is best facilitated by an education where the particular and …

Placebo Use In Clinical Practice, Lauren Lowy Jan 2017

Placebo Use In Clinical Practice, Lauren Lowy

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This thesis examines placebos and their potential for use in clinical settings. I begin by defining “placebo” and “placebo effect” in various contexts, including associated biochemical mechanisms. I then discuss how expectation, conditioning, and patient-physician interactions influence the magnitude of the placebo effect on patients. My research delves into the difficulty of defining and measuring the placebo effect given its subjective nature, and supports the harnessing of this effect as a viable treatment option for certain conditions, including but not limited to depression and pain management. Finally, I address the accompanying ethical concerns of placebo use in clinical practice in …

Top To Bottom Shelf: Redistributive Crime, Alyssa Sangeeta Jacobson Jan 2017

Top To Bottom Shelf: Redistributive Crime, Alyssa Sangeeta Jacobson

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Loss prevention personnel in retail firms face difficult and expensive decisions regarding the technologies they should implement to reduce product loss and redistributive crime. Using Office Depot as a case study, this paper evaluates redistributive crime, which is the tendency for theft of unprotected products to increase when surveillance systems are placed on protected ones. I also analyze the security measures used to combat these crimes, focusing mainly on the Electronic Article Surveillance systems and the product loss for a single high-risk department as compared to several standard departments. My results allowed for the calculation of a loss prevention equilibrium …

Policing And Privacy: The Use Of Body Worn Cameras By Law Enforcement Officers, Ian Kaye Jan 2017

Policing And Privacy: The Use Of Body Worn Cameras By Law Enforcement Officers, Ian Kaye

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

There is an apparent dilemma concerning the interactions between law enforcement personnel and civilians. In certain instances, law enforcement officers have acted brutally and unlawfully against suspects, or civilians have reported false claims of excessive force. A possible solution to reduce these problems is a policy requiring officers to wear Body Worn Cameras (BWC) while on duty. BWC’s have the potential to diminish excessive force in altercations between law enforcers and the general population. A claim of excessive force or unacceptable behavior and brutality can be disputed or confirmed with video evidence, although video cameras are not completely reliable due …

Phenotypic Characterization Of Mice Lacking Dna Repair In The Muscle, Danielle Hennessy-Wack Jan 2017

Phenotypic Characterization Of Mice Lacking Dna Repair In The Muscle, Danielle Hennessy-Wack

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

DNA is damaged by many environmental factors like ultraviolet light from the sun and even by by-products of normal metabolism in our bodies, for example reactive oxygen species. A mouse model was used to test the effects DNA damage has on aging and age-related diseases. Damaged DNA is an early sign of muscle aging. The ERCC1- XPF complex is important because it repairs DNA. Using the Cre-Lox system, we knocked-out the Ercc1 gene in differentiated myocytes or muscle fibers. We measured body weight, fat content, muscle strength, and the ability of muscle to break down glucose, and found no comparable …

Age Related And Methamphetamine-Associated Changes To Basolateral Amygdala Spine Density In Young To Adolescent Animals, Jillian Herman Jan 2017

Age Related And Methamphetamine-Associated Changes To Basolateral Amygdala Spine Density In Young To Adolescent Animals, Jillian Herman

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Early development and adolescence are critical periods for humans and rodent brain development which makes teenage drug use particularly worrisome. We previously demonstrated that dendritic spine density increased following METH training in adult animals. Given the importance of these critical periods for neuronal development and the importance of dendritic spines for memory formation the first aim was to examine basolateral amygdala (BLA) spine density in mice postnatal day 16-20 and 28-35. Furthermore, the effect of METH training on BLA dendritic spine density in adolescent animals was also examined. We found that there were no significant differences in the spine density …

Projection And Impression: Construction Of Anxiety In The Horror Story, Alexandra Harrington Jan 2017

Projection And Impression: Construction Of Anxiety In The Horror Story, Alexandra Harrington

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Derek Attridge and Wolfgang Iser’s argument that fiction possesses the ability to change the reader shows that the reader is permanently altered by their exposure to the horror story. Horror texts employ both narratorial and structural devices to build tension while implementing images and tropes meant to evoke unease in the reader. By causing the reader to experience anxiety through these devices, horror novels transform the reader into a victim. This victimization of the reader is furthered through the horror novel’s ability to transcend the page and affect the reader physically. The reader’s perception of their surroundings are also affected …

Invasion Assay Of Melanoma Cells Wm115 And Wm266-4, Dominique Davis Jan 2017

Invasion Assay Of Melanoma Cells Wm115 And Wm266-4, Dominique Davis

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that play an important role in tumor growth and invasion (Gialeli, 2010). They can degrade cell-adhesion molecules that allow for cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions, which is necessary for cancer cells to degrade physical barriers (Gialeli, 2010). The presence of MMPs in cancer cells help promote cell invasion. In this project, melanoma cell lines WM115 (primary) and WM266-4 (metastatic) were used to conduct the invasion assay. The invasion assay was designed and optimized to test the ability of the cell to cut and pass through the collagen membrane. Next, a general …

Optogenetic Control Of Grooming In Nf1 Mutant Drosophila Melanogaster, Éamonn Byrnes Jan 2017

Optogenetic Control Of Grooming In Nf1 Mutant Drosophila Melanogaster, Éamonn Byrnes

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Neurofibromatosis is an inherited neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the tumor suppressor gene NF1 in humans. Symptoms include nerve tumors, learning impairment, and ADHD. The cognitive effects of neurofibromatosis were studied by using grooming as a behavioral phenotype of Nf1 mutations in Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies indicate Nf1 mutations increase grooming up to seven times. If Nf1 mutant flies are optogenetically stimulated, will grooming levels increase? The CsChrimson protein can be stimulated with light to excite motor neurons of flies and initiate grooming. Drosophila subjects were placed in a chamber, stimulated with red light, and a camera recorded grooming …

On The Rag, On The Web: An Analysis Of Textual And Visual Content Found On Traditional And Alternative Menstrual Product Websites, Genesis Marie R. Buendia Jan 2017

On The Rag, On The Web: An Analysis Of Textual And Visual Content Found On Traditional And Alternative Menstrual Product Websites, Genesis Marie R. Buendia

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Menstruation is historically a taboo topic, and people see periods as a curse rather than a natural experience of the body. Past media content such as menstrual advertisements found in magazines and on televisions often depicted women doing activities as if they did not have a period. People bought traditional menstrual products to be free from embarrassment only to be controlled by consumerism. These advertisements were one of the few sources of information regarding menstruation due to the silence on the topic. Present media content found on menstrual product websites, however, show a shift in ideology. I argue that, unlike …

Well Enough Alone: Stories, Sarah Jane Huskey Jan 2017

Well Enough Alone: Stories, Sarah Jane Huskey

Theses and Dissertations

This collection of short stories aims to capture the difficulties of telling anything at all, let alone the truth, the whole story, or the abstract reality. Though its thematic concerns might seem a bit cheerless at first blush, Well Enough Alone aims to treat them as prominent features of day-to-day life rather than gloomy afflictions or the loci of trauma.

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Counselor Competencies In Working With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Katherine A. Feather Jan 2017

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Counselor Competencies In Working With Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Katherine A. Feather

Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a profound diagnosis that affects 1% of the world’s population (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC]; 2015a). Counselors can play a dynamic role in treating ASD and promoting greater life satisfaction; however, the counseling field has not identified how counselors develop their competencies working with children with ASD and their families. Therefore, the phenomenological investigation examined the experiences of 15 counselors in the field and their self-perceived competencies of treating ASD. A model of ASD counseling competencies development emerged from the data. Participants described the developmental components of Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies …

Welcome into my scientific lab! My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with noncontrolled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). * In this third book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, referring to topics on NEUTROSOPHY – email …
