Effect Of Allyl Thiourea On Nickel Electrodeposition From Solution Containing Ammonia And Chloride, Ya-Ning He, Liang Yuan, Zhi-Ying Ding, Shi-Jun Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effects of allylthiourea (ATU) concentration on the cathodic polarization behaviour, nucleation and surface morphology of nickel electrodeposited on the glassy carbon electrode from ammonia-ammonium chloride-water (NH3-NH4Cl-H2O) solutions were investigated by cyclic voltammogry, cathodic polarization and current transient methods. The results revealed that the addition of ATU inhibited nickel deposition, which was enhanced with an increase in ATU concentration from 5 to 50 mg•L-1. The initial deposition kinetics corresponded to a model including instantaneous nucleation and diffusion controlled growth. In the presence of ATU, the initial nucleation of nickel electrocrystallisation remained unchanged. …

The carbon coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4/C) composite cathode material was prepared by using iron phosphate process. The effects of jet milling and classifying process on the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4/C cathode material in full batteries were investigted. Scanning electron microscopic analyses suggested that the globose secondary particles were crustily crushed during the jet milling and classifying process, which would further result in lower tap density and carbon content. The LiFeP4/C composite cathode materials with different physical characteristics were further tested in full batteries to evaluate the electrochemical properties. The results showed no obvious …

Engineering The Electrochemical Capacitive Properties Of Activated Carbon By Correct Selection Of Ionic-Liquid Electrolytes, Qiu-Hong Zhang, Bao-Shou Shen, Song-Lin Zuo, Xin-Yu Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
In order to improve the electrochemical capacitive properties and to apply coconut shell activated carbon (AC) serving as electrode materials in ionic liquid (IL)-based supercapacitor (SC), the coconut shell AC material was re-activated using a steam as an activating agent in this work, forming a secondary AC (W-AC). The results showed that the specific capacitance of the W-AC electrode was much larger than that of the raw activated carbon electrode (R-AC) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM]BF4). The electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD) measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to systematically study the capacitive …

Effect Of Fe2+/Fe3+Interconvertion On Reduction Behavior Of Fe3+ In Acidic Electrolytes, Jian-Xin Qin, Feng Lin, Wen-Ping Liu, Chao Chen, Meng-De Ren
Journal of Electrochemistry
The influences of ferrous/ferric (Fe2+/Fe3+) interconvertion on electrochemical reduction and electrode reaction of Fe3+ were investigated by using linear sweep voltammetry, potentiostatic method and cyclic voltammetry (CV) in acidic electrolytes containing chloride ion (Cl-) and sulfate ion (SO42-). It was shown that the reduction process of Fe3+/Fe2+ would take place in two independent stages: (1) the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ at E=0.35V and (2) the co-precipitation of Fe2+ by forming Fe(OH)2 (E≤-0.3 V) instead of Fe. The major effect of Fe2+ …

Irrigated Corn Production And Management In The Texas High Plains, Qingwu Xue, Thomas H. Marek, Wenwei Xu, Jourdan Bell
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Corn is the major irrigated crop in the Texas High Plains (THP) and uses 53% of the total agricultural regional water resource budget. Currently, the declining water level of the Ogallala Aquifer, coupled with irrigation pumping restrictions by regional groundwater conservation districts, is challenging sustainable, high level corn production. The objective of this article is to review production levels and evaluate corn management practices in the THP with reduced or limited levels of irrigation. Long-term field studies demonstrate that yield and water use efficiency (WUE) have increased significantly over the last forty years while seasonal corn evapotranspiration (ET) under full …

The Economics Of Local Enhanced Management Areas In Southwest Kansas, Bill Golden, Bridget Guerrero
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The purpose of this research is to provide input into the water planning process for select subareas in southwest Kansas. Stakeholder input suggests that a reduction in groundwater use may be desirable in order to preserve the Ogallala Aquifer and extend its economic contribution to both the producer and the regional economy. In an endeavor to define the benefits and costs of water conservation policy, this research estimates measures of producer net profits and regional value added and places a monetary value on the conserved groundwater. The results of the models that assume the goal is to maximize producer profits, …

Understanding Climate-Hydrologic-Human Interactions To Guide Groundwater Model Development For Southern High Plains, Venkatesh Uddameri, Sreeram Singaraju, Abdullah Karim, Prasanna Gowda, Ryan Bailey, Meagan Schipanski
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The Ogallala Aquifer is the only reliable source of freshwater in the Southern High Plains (SHP) and is used extensively to build a strong agricultural economy with a significant impact on global food security. Groundwater models capable of simulating human-hydrologic-climate interactions are crucial to guide future water management and policy planning endeavors in this water stressed region. A well-defined conceptual model is a necessary first-step in that direction. Conceptual modeling should not be limited to compiling necessary datasets but must also focus on generating critical insights pertaining to human-climate-aquifer interactions especially when the emphasis is on guiding future policy. Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The Lower Mississippi River Basin (LMRB) is an internationally-important region of intensive agricultural crop production that relies heavily on the underlying Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVAA) for irrigation. Extensive irrigation coupled with the region's geology have led to significant aquifer decline. The response to the decline has been multi-faceted. Research related to three responses are highlighted: innovation in rice irrigation, on-farm reservoirs, and managed aquifer recharge. Irrigated rice grown in Arkansas, which is nearly 50% of annual U.S. rice production, accounts for a significant portion of aquifer withdrawal. As a result, strategies for using less water while maintaining rice …

Developmental Biology, The Stem Cell Of Biological Disciplines, Scott F. Gilbert
Developmental Biology, The Stem Cell Of Biological Disciplines, Scott F. Gilbert
Biology Faculty Works
Developmental biology (including embryology) is proposed as "the stem cell of biological disciplines.” Genetics, cell biology, oncology, immunology, evolutionary mechanisms, neurobiology, and systems biology each has its ancestry in developmental biology. Moreover, developmental biology continues to roll on, budding off more disciplines, while retaining its own identity. While its descendant disciplines differentiate into sciences with a restricted set of paradigms, examples, and techniques, developmental biology remains vigorous, pluripotent, and relatively undifferentiated. In many disciplines, especially in evolutionary biology and oncology, the developmental perspective is being reasserted as an important research program.

Tropical storm intensity prediction remains a challenge in tropical meteorology. Some tropical storms undergo dramatic rapid intensification and rapid decline. Hurricane researchers have considered particular ambient environmental conditions including the ocean thermal and salinity structure and internal vortex dynamics (e.g., eyewall replacement cycle, hot towers) as factors creating favorable conditions for rapid intensification. At this point, however, it is not exactly known to what extent the state of the sea surface controls tropical cyclone dynamics. Theoretical considerations, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations suggest that the air-sea interface under tropical cyclones is subject to the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability. Ejection of large …

The locution “law and . . . (some other discipline)” implicitly asserts the primacy of legal doctrine and institutions narrowly conceived for coming to understand phenomena in which law takes a part. The ordinary story of American legal theory – formalism then realism then contemporary legal thought – can be understood to repeat the triumphalism implicit in “law and . . .” Of course, the story of American legal theory could possibly be read differently -- as a series of responses to the inability …

Cigarette Taxes And Illicit Trade In Europe Online Appendix, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Cigarettes are highly taxed in Europe to discourage tobacco use and to fund public-health measures to mitigate the harms from tobacco consumption. At higher prices some consumers substitute more toward illicit cigarettes.
