Increasing Clabsi Bundle Compliance In The Nicu, Hannah Barry Dec 2017

Increasing Clabsi Bundle Compliance In The Nicu, Hannah Barry

Master's Projects and Capstones

Central lines are frequently used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the administration of medications and total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) have the potential to cause harm in the vulnerable neonate. Current evidence shows that having a CLABSI bundle compliance rate of 95 percent or greater correlates with a reduction in CLABSI occurrences. The purpose of this project is to increase compliance to CLABSI prevention practices in the NICU through education and ongoing central line audits. Baseline line audit data revealed an 80 percent compliance rate (n = 50) and 50 percent of …

Transgender Bathroom Rights In The Time Of Trump, Catherine Jean Archibald Dec 2017

Transgender Bathroom Rights In The Time Of Trump, Catherine Jean Archibald

Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice

On May 13, 2016, the Obama Administration issued a guidance document entitled “Dear Colleague Letter on Transgender Students,” which interpreted federal law as requiring that transgender students be permitted to use bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity in schools receiving federal funding. Considerable litigation ensued. Less than a year later, on February 22, 2017, the Trump Administration rescinded this guidance document. The Trump Administration asserts that it should be up to individual states to decide what bathrooms transgender children may use in schools.

This article addresses where transgender bathroom rights stand now that Obama’s Dear Colleague Letter has been …

It's Not Complicated: Containing Criminal Law's Influence On The Title Ix Process, Margaret Drew Dec 2017

It's Not Complicated: Containing Criminal Law's Influence On The Title Ix Process, Margaret Drew

Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice

Title IX processes that address campus sexual assault are undergoing dramatic changes in structure as well as in policy review. After receipt of the Department of Education’s 2011 “Dear Colleague” letter, colleges and universities were impelled to review how their institutions were implementing Title IX. From website information through investigation and decision-making on alleged violations, the ways in which higher education addresses federally guided changes is a matter of national conversation. This article addresses change considering campus sexual assault allegations, and does not explicitly address other forms of Title IX complaints, such as athletic funding and opportunities. This essay limits …

Postmodern Social Control: Dividuals And Surveillance, Ernest M. Oleksy

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Edward A. Ross: Social Development And Social Control, Ernest M. Oleksy Dec 2017

Edward A. Ross: Social Development And Social Control, Ernest M. Oleksy

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

With a foundation in philosophy and history, core concepts of sociology and criminology that were initially posited over a century ago are still useful in understanding the workings of today's society. The contributions of Edward A. Ross have helped latter day researchers centralize their studies of polycentric topics by using social control as an omnipresent social fact. By comparing Ross's descriptions of 19th century society and the researcher's descriptions of 21st century society, a continuous understanding of a heavily pluralistic discipline comes to life.

The Appearance And Effects Of Music Therapy In The Solid Organ Transplant Unit, Tracey J. Elliott

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

Patients admitted to the solid-organ transplant unit face a plethora of physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. Risk of infection, perception of pain, depression, surgery complications, and exhaustion are just a few hardships that a patient may face while hospitalized. Patient need areas thus serve as goal areas for the hospital support staff. While intervention is provided to patients in a variety of forms, music therapy is an effective means of treatment due to its multi-faceted nature; a music therapist can address a variety of goal areas with any given patient. The first section of this paper will briefly outline the …

Post-Operative Cardiometabolic Effects Of A Behavioral Intervention In Patents Undergoing Partial Meniscectomy, Craig Patrick Flanagan Dec 2017

Post-Operative Cardiometabolic Effects Of A Behavioral Intervention In Patents Undergoing Partial Meniscectomy, Craig Patrick Flanagan

Open Access Dissertations

Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery experience reduced physical activity, increasing future risk for cardiometabolic disease and weight gain. A post-operative wellness consultation, with exercise and nutrition components, may modify the behavior of orthopedic patients to mitigate the detrimental effects of inactivity following surgery and the associated adverse health effects. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition and exercise consultation on post-operative physical activity, serum metabolic markers, body composition, knee function, pain, and quality of life. METHODS: Twelve partial meniscectomy patients were randomly assigned to control (CON) or post-surgical consultation (PSC) and evaluated 1 week (1W) and 6 weeks (6W) …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Listening Effort Experience Of Adults With Hearing Loss, Alison Marinelli Dec 2017

A Qualitative Examination Of The Listening Effort Experience Of Adults With Hearing Loss, Alison Marinelli

Doctoral Dissertations

Increased effort and fatigue are common complaints of individuals with hearing loss, however the listening effort (LE) experience from the patient perspective is not well understood. Current models note the importance of cognitive factors in LE. Research, that is largely quantitative in nature, has shown equivocal findings regarding auditory signals that may cause increased LE, technologies that may ameliorate the LE experience, and the effects of LE on sensory systems. Very limited work has explored the personal aspects of LE. As a whole, however, investigations of LE fail to define the experience from the patient’s view or offer suggestions for …

A Note On Mitigating The Adverse Scale Effects Associated With Daily Driving Restrictions, Arthur J. Caplan, Man-Keun Kim Dec 2017

A Note On Mitigating The Adverse Scale Effects Associated With Daily Driving Restrictions, Arthur J. Caplan, Man-Keun Kim

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the role of additional regulation in mitigating the “adverse scale effect” associated with daily driving restrictions, which has become a popular regulatory tool used to control episodic air pollution internationally, especially in developing countries. We find that although an annual vehicle registration tax reduces the incentive to purchase additional vehicles among households whose sole purpose for doing so is to “cheat” the restriction (i.e., the “adverse scale effect”), it does so with an external cost. The cost occurs because households whose purpose for purchasing an additional vehicle is not to cheat the restriction are given the same …

Transformations Of The Turkish Headscarf: An Exploration Of The Political Meaning, Socio-Economic Impact, Cultural Influence, And The Art And Craft Of The Hijab, Kelsey Gabrielle Leuenberger Dec 2017

Transformations Of The Turkish Headscarf: An Exploration Of The Political Meaning, Socio-Economic Impact, Cultural Influence, And The Art And Craft Of The Hijab, Kelsey Gabrielle Leuenberger

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The wearing of hijab by Muslim women is a divisive issue around the world. The history of veiling by Turkish women is important because it is so controversial and because of its global relevance in contexts of economics, politics, and culture. The headscarf, as a form of art and power, has significant influence on the freedoms of women. The goal of this research project is to elevate Western understanding of Turkish women’s headscarf veiling as it is located in economic, political, cultural, and socio-historical contexts and as it intersects with artistic influence and design. This research on the contradictions and …

Developing Effective Online Training Tools For Maine Adaptive Sports And Recreation, Kristina Jamo, Emily Gall, Shannon Bergeland, Chelsea Paul Dec 2017

Developing Effective Online Training Tools For Maine Adaptive Sports And Recreation, Kristina Jamo, Emily Gall, Shannon Bergeland, Chelsea Paul

Research Report Papers

Background: Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR) relies on volunteers to instruct their participants with disabilities to participate in a variety of adaptive sport programs. Volunteers must have a comprehensive understanding of participants’ health conditions to assist appropriately. MASR’s traditional training program lacked a formal curriculum and assessment of volunteer learning. Our purpose was to create online learning modules and determine whether implementing a massed or distributed schedule resulted in better long term retention. Methods: Two non-randomized groups of eleven adults were assigned to either an in-class, massed format (Group A) or an at-home, distributed schedule (Group B) to complete …
