Cost Of Salvage?€“ A Comparative Form Approach, Chung-Sheng Chiu, Chung-Ping Liu, Ki-Yin Chang, Wen-Jui Tseng, Yung-Wei Chen Dec 2017

Cost Of Salvage?€“ A Comparative Form Approach, Chung-Sheng Chiu, Chung-Ping Liu, Ki-Yin Chang, Wen-Jui Tseng, Yung-Wei Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The most important principle of salvage is the "No Cure-No Pay" basis, if there is no recovery, there is no payment, whatever the expense of the operation. However, this principle has changed in recent years to reflect the public interest in prevention of damage to the environment (Mudric, 2010). The salvor can now contract in such a way that he is shielded from loss when responding to high risk or low value casualties (so called as "No Cure-Some pay"). Salvage is a high-profit business and high-risk as well in the world. The case of the Costa Concordia - by no …

A Numerical Model For Pipeline Abandonment In Deep Water, Duanfeng Han, Kuo Huang, Yingfei Zan, Zhaohui Wu Dec 2017

A Numerical Model For Pipeline Abandonment In Deep Water, Duanfeng Han, Kuo Huang, Yingfei Zan, Zhaohui Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In offshore oil and gas engineering, pipeline abandonment is unavoidable and its mechanical analysis is necessary and important. For this problem, a numerical model is developed in this study to evaluate pipeline abandonment for the J-laying method. The whole system considered in this model is divided into two parts: the A&R cable and the pipeline in the water. A catenary model was proposed for the former, and the latter is solved by a numerical iterative method. In addition to the boundary conditions at the two end points, a special set of boundary conditions is required at the junction that connects …

Experimental Study Of Dynamic Stability Of Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator System Using Zero Moment Point, Jin-Il Kang, Hyeung-Sik Choi, Mai The Vu, Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Dae-Hyeong Ji, Joon-Young Kim Dec 2017

Experimental Study Of Dynamic Stability Of Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator System Using Zero Moment Point, Jin-Il Kang, Hyeung-Sik Choi, Mai The Vu, Nguyen Ngoc Duc, Dae-Hyeong Ji, Joon-Young Kim

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For manipulative underwater operations, an underwater vehiclemanipulator system (UVMS) has more degrees of freedom than those required to conduct a given mission. To follow the desired end-effector position and velocity accurately, UVMS should be able to generate trajectories of manipulators and the underwater vehicle can maintain dynamic stability of the entire system. In this paper, redundancy resolution is performed to find a solution satisfying the given task among many joint-space solutions. Also, to improve the dynamic stability of the UVMS, zero moment point (ZMP) is adopted such that it requires some constraints. For application of UVMS, a joint limitation is …

A Time-Domain Numerical Tool For A Wave Energy Attenuator With The Sph Method, Da-Wei Chen, Shuichi Nagata, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Yasutaka Imai, Chih-Min Hsieh, Jiahn-Horng Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The wave energy attenuator is a floating device which operates perpendicular to the wave fronts and captures wave energy from the relative motions of two hinged floaters as waves passing by them. For establishing the time-domain numerical tools to evaluate the performance of a wave energy attenuator, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) model with mesh-free method was adopted to simulate the hydrodynamic behaviors of each floating object. Three different wave heights of 6 cm, 7 cm, and 10.4 cm of the same period of 1.22 s were commonly derived from typical potential oceanic zones offshore Taiwan and Japan. Comparisons of …

Dynamic Response Analysis Of Micro-Grid With Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, Chia-Yu Hsu, Ming-Wang Chen, Pei-Hwa Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic responses of micro-grid with Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system. The power sources of the studied micro-grid system include an OTEC generator and a wind generator. Three different types of OTEC generation systems, i.e., open-cycle, closed-cycle, and hybrid-cycle, are considered, under the conditions with the same temperature of sea water and output of generator. When the system operates in an islanding or gridconnected mode, the responses subject to load variation are quite different. As the system operates in the grid-connected mode, the voltage and frequency are less affected by …

A Simplified Analytical Method For Estimating Flow-Induced Vibration Responses Of Hydraulic Structures Caused By Flow Fluctuation, Ya-Chao Wu, Lu Lu, Qin-Man Fan, Yun Dong, Chun-Yuan Zuo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In many hydraulic engineering investigations of flow-induced vibration responses, a model test is necessary but yet expensive. In this article, an equilibrium equation between the operation of fluctuating pressure and the work done by damping is established to provide a simplified analytical method for estimating the flow-induced vibration responses of hydraulic structures caused by water flow fluctuations. This approach is based on the Westergaard solution. The flow-induced vibration of water flowing around a dividing wall, the flood discharge vibration of the Liuxihe arch dam, and the flow-induced vibration of the Ertan hyperbolic arch dam are presented to explain the detailed …

Emotionally And Socially Aware Approaches To Understanding And Changing Users’ Cybersecurity Behavior, Michael Fagan Dec 2017

Emotionally And Socially Aware Approaches To Understanding And Changing Users’ Cybersecurity Behavior, Michael Fagan

Doctoral Dissertations

Security is a priority to most, but studies show that users commonly fail to adopt recommended cybersecurity behavior. Researchers have looked to user factors for explanations of this gap, finding security and convenience to be common considerations, along with perceptions of risks and past experiences. Some have tried to alter user behavior, but are targeted at specific advice and focused on rational motivations to persuade users.

In this thesis, three expertly recommended cybersecurity advice (i.e., updating software regularly, using two-factor authentication, using a secure password manager) are deeply explored. These results inform the design of videos in a systematic study …

Modeling Iron Oxide Reactivity In The Environment, Nefeli Maria Bompoti Dec 2017

Modeling Iron Oxide Reactivity In The Environment, Nefeli Maria Bompoti

Doctoral Dissertations

Iron oxides and hydroxides are highly reactive mineral phases in natural systems since they interact with pollutants, controlling their fate and transport in the environment. Goethite (GH) and hematite (HT) are the most abundant iron minerals in nature, while ferrihydrite (FH) is a nanomineral with high surface reactivity. Subsurface transport modeling has usually represented the adsorption processes by empirical relationships, such as distribution coefficients (Kd) or isotherm equations. However, empirical approaches cannot account for variable geochemical conditions. These effects can be addressed by the mechanistic surface complexation models (SCMs). So far, the application of SCMs has been limited …

An Examination Of Household Food Security’S Measurement, Report And Experience By Gender, Jaime Foster Dec 2017

An Examination Of Household Food Security’S Measurement, Report And Experience By Gender, Jaime Foster

A Spatio-Temporal Approach To Mitigate Automotive Radar Spoofing Attacks, Prateek Kapoor

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Cyber-physical system (CPS) has become an integral part of human life, ranging from aircraft to health care systems. The security of these critical components ensures its wider acceptability. Traditionally, many works to secure cyber-physical system (CPS) has been done in the cyber domain, like securing inter/intra CPS communication, securing the exposed software, rebuilding control input derived from sensor data post-digitization, using sensor fusion. All of this security software suffers from a basic attack wherein an attacker compromises the physical/analog sensing system. Researchers have made some progress in mitigating such attacks on physical/analog signals of CPS, the current state of the …

A Roadmap For The Journey Home - A Supplemental Tool Guiding Patients From Hospital To Home, Michelle Basco

Master's Projects and Capstones

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) have recognized readmission rates as a public health problem. CMS incentivizes hospitals to reduce readmission rates and reduce payments for hospitals with high readmission rates (Berry et al., 2013). Patient education and discharge planning are associated with decreased readmission rates. I gained fieldwork experience at Children’s Health System of Texas in Dallas. Children’s Health, a pediatric non-profit, is the 8th largest pediatric health care provider in the U.S. Prior to discharge patient education occurs on topics related to their diagnosis, plus patients are provided discharge instructions including their diagnosis, medications, and simple instructions for …

Improving Early Sepsis Identification On Inpatient Units, Hannah Pari Dec 2017

Improving Early Sepsis Identification On Inpatient Units, Hannah Pari

Master's Projects and Capstones

Sepsis is a life threatening medical emergency that if left untreated could ultimately lead to death. It is defined as the body’s extreme response to infection which can rapidly worsen if not identified and managed quickly. As sepsis worsens, it leads to extended hospital stays, poor patient prognoses and increased hospital costs. In an effort to combat these negative outcomes, efficient protocols must be implemented hospital wide. A 5 P’s microsystem assessment was preformed to assess the purpose, patients, professionals, processes and patterns. Additionally, assessments were conducted to collect baseline nursing knowledge regarding sepsis criteria, treatment, and hospital protocol. A …

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program, Rozlyn Bauer

Master's Projects and Capstones

The purpose of this project is to help increase retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRN) at a large community medical center. The medical center loses approximately 20 NLRNs per year which is costly for the medical center. The loss of NLRN can be attributed to decreased job satisfaction, poor nursing competence and lateral violence between the nursing staff. Evidence shows that mentorship is a proven, evidence-based approach to solving these issues and more (Hodgson & Scanlan, 2013).

Not only can mentorship help increase retention, address lateral violence, increase job satisfaction and nursing competence but, it can also help enhance …
