Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald Dec 2017

Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald

Open Access Dissertations

It is widely recognized that historical data about human interactions with the natural world is critical to understanding anthropogenic environmental change over time (McNeill, 2001). However, the potential contribution of interdisciplinary historical perspectives to wildlife conservation problems remains largely unexplored. Human-wildlife interactions are informed by a variety of factors, including the scientific and ecological literacy of human populations, human values, the availability of habitat and resources for human and animal populations, and the types of resource conflicts taking place (or likely to take place) (Treves et al., 2006). The role of historical interactions in shaping present attitudes and conflicts can …

The Intersection Of Anger Management Counseling And Embodiment In Dance/Movement Therapy, Maria Parise

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research study was to explore how the embodiment of aspects of anger may integrate within anger management counseling. Through this research, the first step was taken in exploring the physical expression of anger as an intervention tool in anger management counseling. A personal understanding of anger expression and management was established which may be utilized in future dance/movement therapy (DMT) sessions. This study was guided by multiple research questions: How might the embodiment of anger integrate with anger management counseling? How might the sensations, images, feelings, and thoughts experienced in anger management sessions lead to an …

A Heuristic Inquiry Into The Subjective Lived Experience And Expression Of Authenticity As A Developing Dance/Movement Therapist, Elyssa M. Yeh

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this self-study was to explore and understand my subjective lived experience and expression of the phenomenon of authenticity, which included identifying the components of my professional identity; discerning the challenges, barriers, and limitations to my full experience and expression of authenticity; establishing awareness of when I am and when I am not engaging fully with my authenticity; and developing a sense of authenticity within myself that is adaptable to a variety of situations and relationships. Moustakas (1990) six-steps of a heuristic investigation were implemented in this qualitative inquiry. Data was collected using art-making methods and analyzed using …

“In A Position I See Myself In:” (Re)Positioning Identities And Culturally-Responsive Pedagogies, Noah Asher Golden Dec 2017

“In A Position I See Myself In:” (Re)Positioning Identities And Culturally-Responsive Pedagogies, Noah Asher Golden

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Culturally-responsive pedagogies require moving beyond blanket assumptions about learners to focus deeply on local meaning-makings. This narrative analysis case study examines the ways a 20-year-old African American man challenges the negative educational identity with which he is forced to contend as he navigates a large and complex urban public school system. The ways in which Jamahl, a seeker of a High School Equivalency, refuses interpellation as an uneducated learner destined to be “nothin'” provides insight as to how formal education might be more responsive to learners' negotiation of deficiency discourses. Embracing agency, specifically through awareness of the ways Jamahl employs …

The Role Of Mapk And Scf In The Destruction Of Med13 In Cyclin C Mediated Cell Death, David C Stieg, Stephen D Willis, Joseph Scuorzo, Mia Song, Vidyaramanan Ganesan, Randy Strich, Katrina F Cooper Dec 2017

The Role Of Mapk And Scf In The Destruction Of Med13 In Cyclin C Mediated Cell Death, David C Stieg, Stephen D Willis, Joseph Scuorzo, Mia Song, Vidyaramanan Ganesan, Randy Strich, Katrina F Cooper

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

In response to stress, the yeast1 and mammalian2 cyclin C translocate from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where it associates with the GTPase Drp1/Dnm1 to drive mitochondrial fragmentation and apoptosis. Therefore, the decision to release cyclin C represents a key life or death decision. In unstressed cells, the cyclin C‐Cdk8 kinase regulates transcription by associating with the Mediator of RNA polymerase II. We previously reported that the Mediator component Med13 anchors cyclin C in the nucleus3. Loss of Med13 function leads to constitutive cytoplasmic localization of cyclin C, resulting in fragmented mitochondria, hypersensitivity to stress and …

Leader Self-Efficacy In Youth Leader Development: A Mixed Methods Study, Christopher J. Rehm Dec 2017

Leader Self-Efficacy In Youth Leader Development: A Mixed Methods Study, Christopher J. Rehm

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Leader self-efficacy (LSE) is a construct studied in adults and college students which is associated with leader emergence, individual performance, and group performance. This mixed methods dissertation examines LSE in an eighth grade student population to determine if it can be impacted by a leader development intervention during this sensitive period of human growth. Both quantitative and qualitative methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the programming in impacting youth LSE. This holds significant implications for future educational practice, research, and the development of the next generation of leaders. A five item youth LSE scale was created which can aid in further …

Assessing Morphological Deformities In Cetaceans: Definition Of Patterns And Quantification With A Case Study (Madeira Island, Ne Atlantic), Erich Dietterle Dec 2017

Assessing Morphological Deformities In Cetaceans: Definition Of Patterns And Quantification With A Case Study (Madeira Island, Ne Atlantic), Erich Dietterle

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Documenting deformities in cetaceans can lead to understandings in the health of the populations, but also the state of ocean and human health in an area. Deformities like skin lesions can lead to information about local pollution levels or possible diseases, while physical impacts can give insight into vessel traffic or fishing gear entanglement information. Cetaceans encounter threats like vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements worldwide, but less obvious activities like whale watching or pollution can also have impacts. Studies have been conducted worldwide and around the Madeira Archipelago to document deformities, but there are various descriptions for what is …

Increases Student Aid Funding At California Public Colleges And Universities By Enacting A Dedicated Tax On Some Estates. Initiative Constitutional Amendment And Statute.

Initiatives

Increases student aid funding for undergraduate students at University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges, by enacting a dedicated tax (ranging from 12-22%, depending on value) on estate property in California valued at $3.5 million or more and transferred upon death. Exempts revenue from constitutionally required: annual state spending limit, minimum-funding guarantee for schools, and state budget reserve deposits. Requires that revenue would supplement, and not replace, existing financial aid programs for college students. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Increased state revenues of a …

The purpose of this study is to examine the teaching of missional principles of discipleship at Berea Lutheran Church. I examine the attitudinal changes that take place as a result of this class. The first step in this process is looking at what those missional and Biblical principles are and then creating a method of teaching them in a large group setting …

Privileging Autistics Of Color: A Human Rights Approach To Applied Behavior Analysis (Aba) Therapy, Rebecca Rubey

Master's Projects and Capstones

This field project examines the social construction of autistic people of color through the pathology paradigm and the associated human rights violations. The purpose of the project is to disrupt the pathology paradigm by privileging voices of autistic people of color in professional development workshops for ABA therapy providers. The workshops aim to help ABA therapy providers understand the historical context of ABA, how it fits into the wider systems of white supremacy and ableism, and how these dynamics are re-enacted in every day practice with autistic people of color.

Weaponized Citizenship: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of U.S. Citizenship Legislation In The Pacific Unincorporated Territories, Ross Dardani Dec 2017

Weaponized Citizenship: A Critical Race Theory Analysis Of U.S. Citizenship Legislation In The Pacific Unincorporated Territories, Ross Dardani

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines U.S. citizenship legislation in the U.S. Pacific unincorporated territories through Critical Race Theory’s interest-convergence thesis. I employ Derrick Bell’s theory of interest-convergence to argue that it is only when economic, cultural, political, and social interests converge to benefit the United States that U.S. lawmakers have enacted legislation to extend citizenship to the Pacific unincorporated territories (Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). I also rely on Mary Dudziak’s use of interest-convergence, which she used to explain the implementation of key social reforms of the Civil Rights Movement, such as desegregation, as a model …

D(I)Aspora: Discourse, Multimodality, And The Speaking Of Migrant Subjects In New Media, Alwin Aguirre Dec 2017

D(I)Aspora: Discourse, Multimodality, And The Speaking Of Migrant Subjects In New Media, Alwin Aguirre

Mabini Review

The paper has two main aims: first, I emphasize the need for a multimodal lens in discourse analysis; second, I present a critique of the discursive construction of migrant identity on Internet-based new media platforms that are produced by state institutions (i.e. official websites) and created by individual migrants on their own personal social media profiles. Using a multimodal framework that accounts for not only words but the various semiotic resources available to participants in online media content production, I focus my analysis on two sets of cases of official texts from Philippine and New Zealand government migration websites and …

Enforcing The Canon Law:Normative Pluralism And Clerical Abuse In The Catholic Church, Vivencio Ballano Dec 2017

Enforcing The Canon Law:Normative Pluralism And Clerical Abuse In The Catholic Church, Vivencio Ballano

Mabini Review

This article investigates why clerical abuse of Catholic priests persists in the Church using the sociological and normative pluralist perspectives. It analyzes how the various informal normative standards of the Church— doctrinal, ethical, or biblical—affect the enforcement of Canon Law on clerical abuse by bishops, particularly on how they decide on specific cases on the diocesan level. It also investigates how the cultural values and norms influence the bishop’s decision whether to sanction erring priests or not or to prosecute abuse cases in civil courts. Unlike the state, the Church has no professional judicial system with a set of legal …

Knowledge Sits In Places:The Vernacularity And Emplacement Of Fish Markets In Southern Philippines, Nelson Turgo Dec 2017

Knowledge Sits In Places:The Vernacularity And Emplacement Of Fish Markets In Southern Philippines, Nelson Turgo

Mabini Review

Markets sit in places and knowledge produced in these places also constitute the very foundation of markets’ viability and market actors’ performative competitive edge. However, not all markets are created equal primarily in the context of their importance in the global economy. Thus conceived, we imagine a world economy or markets populated by people in front of wide computer screens making sense of financial algorithms and derivatives. In a way, here, we see a market that is run by codified knowledge, or scientific knowledge that transcends boundaries. But what about a conception of market that recognizes the production of knowledge …

Leadership Development, Succession Planning And Simulation: A Succession Plan For Organizational Success, Beth Eichenberger Dec 2017

Leadership Development, Succession Planning And Simulation: A Succession Plan For Organizational Success, Beth Eichenberger

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Future executive nurse leaders must be identified and prepared for the challenges of 21st century health care. The literature suggests a lack of existing standardized succession plans for these leaders. Senior leaders are often faced with the complex issue of how to develop and validate the competencies required for these leadership roles (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt, & Chiang- Hanisko, 2016). Therefore, in the absence of a succession plan, creating a leadership development program, which provides a pipeline of new executive leaders, would alleviate this gap. The motivating force is an effort to promote current talent and provide a higher level of …

Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li Dec 2017

Practical English For Chinese Newcomers: A Handbook For Teachers, Li Li

Master's Projects and Capstones

When new Chinese immigrants first arrive in the United States, they face challenges related to both language barriers and acculturative stress. Language barriers and acculturative stress mutually reinforce each other. Furthermore, they significantly inconvenience new Chinese immigrants in terms of living, working and studying. Incorporating cultural information into English as a second language (ESL) teaching is thus important from a sociocultural and intercultural perspective. Therefore, the underlying purposes of this project is to enhance English communicative competence and American cultural adaptation among new Chinese immigrants by immersing them in authentic, situational, and practical communication in the United States. The project …
