There has been much research on the physical barriers that those with disabilities experience. This research investigates the level of participation of disabled people in tourism and explores the perceptions of risks and barriers to participation in tourism for people with a disability. The barriers that were explored included information, economic, social, physical barriers and the perceptions of risks these barriers cause, within the concept of the 'Social Model‘ of disability (Shaw and Coles, 2004). Data was gathered from a sample group of 149 disabled people through an online survey and through face-to-face survey using paper questionnaires. Analysis of the …

The Island Image: A Means Of Segmentation, Jennifer Jade Phillips Jan 2017

The Island Image: A Means Of Segmentation, Jennifer Jade Phillips

Plymouth Business School Theses

The success of tourism, at a destination, is often accredited to the strength of its marketing; yet, the marketing environment is changing at a fast pace where developments in digital technology have had a profound effect on marketing strategies. Furthermore, the increased accessibility of long and short haul travel has resulted in greater competition for tourist visits among destinations. Such changes present a challenge for cold water island destinations with a seasonal tourism product and limited resources for destination marketing. The ability of such destinations to adopt target marketing strategies, using meaningful segmentation criterion, is of great importance for their …

Success And Failure Factors Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transnational Education, Ben Siu Jan 2017

Success And Failure Factors Of Foreign Direct Investment In Transnational Education, Ben Siu

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study identifies the success and failure factors of foreign direct investment in transnational education. With western tertiary education markets becoming more saturated, it becomes essential for higher education institutions (HEI) to pursue new and lucrative opportunities internationally. One approach to internationalisation is the establishment of international branch campuses (IBC). This method provides the highest level of control but incurs the most risk, and failure can result in irrecoverable damage to reputation and substantial loss of resources. A review of the literature shows that numerous facets should be considered when establishing an IBC, but there are limited studies that holistically …

Department of Surgery Docs

Hernia of Morgagni is congenital defects in the diaphragm. They are mostly asymptomatic and present with vague symptoms when they do so. A high index of suspicion is required for timely diagnose of this condition. Here we present the case of a 65-year-old male patient presented to our institute with constipation for the past six months. Chest radiology raised the suspicion of a hernia which was further confirmed by contrast studies. Laparotomy was done and the hernia sac identified, colon and greater omentum reduced and defect repaired. He was discharged in stable condition and was doing well on follow-up.

Defining The Food Movement In Sacramento, California: Branding America’S Farm-To-Fork Capital, Dawnie Marie Andrak Jan 2017

Defining The Food Movement In Sacramento, California: Branding America’S Farm-To-Fork Capital, Dawnie Marie Andrak

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In October 2012, then-Mayor Kevin Johnson, surrounded by the region’s chefs, restaurateurs, and others working in the food arena, proclaimed the City of Sacramento “America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.” The basis for the designation, in part, was Sacramento’s geographic proximity to agricultural production. With more than 50 farmers markets and between 7,000 – 8,000 acres of “boutique farms” in the region, the Mayor stated the designation would be more than “simply a marketing campaign.” Based on interviews with a wide variety of people working in “local food” (including a non-profit organization with a mission to get kids to eat their vegetables, large …

Spirit Determinism In The Christian Anthropology Of Yorù̀Bá Indigenous Churches, Bernard T. Ayọ̀Ọlá Jan 2017

Spirit Determinism In The Christian Anthropology Of Yorù̀Bá Indigenous Churches, Bernard T. Ayọ̀Ọlá

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

There are people who think everything in life is an accident. Then, there are the Yorùbá of Southwestern Nigeria who believe that life outcomes are prearranged by the Supreme Being but may also be altered, for better or for worse, by the spirit beings in the universe. Yorùbá Christians, like their non-Christian kin, believe that many experiences in life are manifestations of the activities of the superhuman spirit beings in the community. While the good spirits (such as ancestors and angels) ordinarily have positive impacts on society, the evil spirits (such as witches, wizards, and demons) often work in collaboration …

Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson Jan 2017

Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article examines the affective capacities of sound and its role in the on-going production of social spaces. More specifically, the article seeks to understand the situated nature of sound’s affectivity within particular social-political-material contexts or circumstances. This is developed through a discussion of an empirical case study related to the history of street music: the ‘street music debates’ of Victorian London. The interrelation here of the sounds street musicians made, the broader urban soundscape of the time, who played street music and who it was that found themselves listening to this music demonstrate clearly the situated affective capacities of …

Sialylation Of Porphyromonas Gingivalis Lps And Its Effect On Bacterial-Host Interactions., Ss Zaric, Mj Lappin, Cr Fulton, Ft Lundy, Wa Coulter, Cr Irwin

Peninsula Dental School

Porphyromonas gingivalis produces different LPS isoforms with significant structural variations of their lipid A and O-antigen moieties that can affect its pro-inflammatory and bone-resorbing potential. We show here, for the first time, that P. gingivalis LPS isolated from W83 strain is highly sialylated and possesses significantly reduced inflammatory potential compared with less sialylated ATCC 33277 strain LPS. Nevertheless, the reduction in the endotoxin activity is not mediated by the presence of sialic acid LPS moieties as the sialic acid-free LPS produced by the mutant W83 strain exhibits a similar inflammatory potential to the wild type strain. Furthermore, our findings suggest …

Asymptotic Residual Stress Distribution Induced By Multipass Welding Processes, P Ferro, F Berto, Nm James Jan 2017

Asymptotic Residual Stress Distribution Induced By Multipass Welding Processes, P Ferro, F Berto, Nm James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the high cycle fatigue (HCF) regime, the fatigue strength of welded joints is influenced by residual stresses (RS) induced during welding processes. If the weld toe is modelled via a sharp V-notch, the distribution of weld toe residual stress can be shown to be asymptotic with a singularity which follows either the linear-elastic or elastic-plastic solution depending on parameters that range across material properties, specimen clamping conditions, and the welding process. For thicker plates, multipass welding is used instead of single-pass welding to reduce the heat input and hence the width of the fusion zone (FZ) and heat-affected zone …

Coastal Bacterioplankton Community Response To Diatom-Derived Polysaccharide Microgels, Joe D. Taylor, Michael Cunliffe Jan 2017

Coastal Bacterioplankton Community Response To Diatom-Derived Polysaccharide Microgels, Joe D. Taylor, Michael Cunliffe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Phytoplankton-derived polysaccharide microgels, including transparent exopolymer particles (TEP), are a major component of the marine organic carbon pool. Previous studies have made correlative links between phytoplankton material and bacterioplankton, and performed experiments that assess general responses to phytoplankton, yet there is a lack of direct empirical evidence of specific bacterioplankton responses to natural phytoplankton polysaccharide microgels. In this study, we used diatom produced TEP in controlled incubation experiments to determine the impact of polysaccharide microgels on a coastal bacterioplankton community. Quantification of bacterial 16S rRNA gene transcripts showed that the addition of TEP caused an increase in bacterioplankton activity. Similarly, …

Uk Policy On Doctor Remediation: Trajectories And Challenges, Tristan Price, Julian Archer Jan 2017

Uk Policy On Doctor Remediation: Trajectories And Challenges, Tristan Price, Julian Archer

Peninsula Medical School

Abstract: Around the world, policy-makers, academics, and health service professionals have become increasingly aware of the importance of remediation, the process by which poor performance is “remedied,” as part of the changing landscape of medical regulation. It is, therefore, an opportune time to critique the UK experience with remediation policy. This article frames, for the first time, the UK remediation policy as developing from a central policy aim that was articulated in the 1990s: to accelerate the identification of underperformance and, subsequently, remedy any problems identified as soon as possible. In pursuit of this aim, three policy trajectories have emerged: …

Seismic Faults And Sacred Sanctuaries In Aegean Antiquity, Iain S. Stewart Jan 2017

Seismic Faults And Sacred Sanctuaries In Aegean Antiquity, Iain S. Stewart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ancient destructive capability of earthquake faults is well chronicled by historians and their cultural impact widely uncovered by archaeologists. Archaeological and geological investigations at some of the most renowned sites in the ancient Greece world, however, suggest a more nuanced and intimate relationship between seismic faults and past human settlements. In the Aegean's karstic landscape earthquake fault scarps act as limestone ramparts on which fortifications, citadels and acropoli were constructed, and underlying fault lines were preferred pathways for groundwater movement and egress. The vital purifactory or therapeutic role of natural springs in the ritual practices of early settlements implies …

Wave Directional Spreading From Point Field Measurements, M. L. Mcallister, V. Venugopal, A. G.L. Borthwick Jan 2017

Wave Directional Spreading From Point Field Measurements, M. L. Mcallister, V. Venugopal, A. G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Ocean waves have multidirectional components. Most wave measurements are taken at a single point, and so fail to capture information about the relative directions of the wave components directly. Conventional means of directional estimation require a minimum of three concurrent time series of measurements at different spatial locations in order to derive information on local directional wave spreading. Here, the relationship between wave nonlinearity and directionality is utilized to estimate local spreading without the need for multiple concurrent measurements, following Adcock & Taylor (Adcock & Taylor 2009 Proc. R. Soc. A 465 , 3361–3381. ( doi:10.1098/rspa.2009.0031 )), with the assumption …

Identification Of The Direct Regulon Of Ntca During Early Acclimation To Nitrogen Starvation In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803., Joaquín Giner-Lamia, Rocío Robles-Rengel, Miguel A. Hernández-Prieto, Mi Muro-Pastor, Francisco J. Florencio, Matthias E. Futschik

School of Biomedical Sciences

In cyanobacteria, nitrogen homeostasis is maintained by an intricate regulatory network around transcription factor NtcA. Although mechanisms controlling NtcA activity appear to be well understood, its regulon remains poorly defined. To determine the NtcA regulon during the early stages of nitrogen starvation for the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, we performed chromatin immunoprecipitation, followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq), in parallel with transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq). Through combining these methods, we determined 51 genes activated and 28 repressed directly by NtcA. In addition to genes associated with nitrogen and carbon metabolism, a considerable number of genes without current functional annotation were among …
