A Memetic Translation Assessment: The Case Of Translating Polysystem Theory Into Arabic, Hisham A. Jawad
A Memetic Translation Assessment: The Case Of Translating Polysystem Theory Into Arabic, Hisham A. Jawad
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
This study examines the underlying principles that trigger decisions in translating the polysystem translation theory into contemporary Arabic. The data comprises an English summary in Munday (2001) and its Arabic version. The methodology draws on the ‘memes’ notion and its application to translation. It consists in deconstructing the polysystem theory-meme so as to see why TT has been shaped the way it is. Two translation memes inform the mutation of the theory in Arab culture, i.e. Cognition which accounts for relevant memetic knowledge and expectations of target receptors, and Target calling for the supremacy of TL/TC. It is argued that …

Predators can limit prey abundance and/or levels of activity. The magnitudes of these effects are contingent on predator and prey traits that may change with environmental conditions. Aberrant thermal regimes could disrupt pest suppression through asymmetric effects, e.g. heat-sensitive predator vs. heat-tolerant prey. To explore potential effects of warming on suppressing pests and controlling herbivory in a vegetable crop, we performed laboratory experiments exposing an important pest species to two spider predator species at different temperatures. Heat tolerance was characterised by the critical thermal maxima parameter (CTM50) of the cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata), wolf spider (Tigrosa helluo …

High-Resolution Ikonos Satellite Imagery For Normalized Difference Vegetative Index-Related Assessment Applied To Land Clearance Studies, Cr Lavers, T Mason
High-Resolution Ikonos Satellite Imagery For Normalized Difference Vegetative Index-Related Assessment Applied To Land Clearance Studies, Cr Lavers, T Mason
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
High-resolution satellite imagery permits verification of human rights land clearance violations across international borders as a result of unstable regimes or socio-economic upheaval. Without direct access to these areas to validate allegations of human rights abuse, the use of remote sensing tools, techniques, and data is extremely important. Humanitarian assessment can benefit from software-based solutions, involving radiometrically calibrated normalized difference vegetation index and temporal change imagery. We discuss the introduction of a matrix filter approach for change detection studies to help assist rapid building detection over large search areas against a bright background to evaluate internally displaced people in the …

Nanoparticle-Based Drug-Delivery Systems Studied By Second Harmonic Generation, Raju Ram Kumal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Second harmonic generation (SHG) is used to study different types of colloidal nanoparticle drug-delivery systems. The surface charge density, electrostatic surface potentials, and ion adsorptions of 50 nm colloidal gold nanoparticle samples coated with mercaptosuccinic acid are determined using SHG measurements under varying NaCl and MgCl2 concentrations in water. Numerical solutions to the spherical Poisson-Boltzmann equation are fit to the SHG results to account for the nanoparticle surface curvature and ion adsorption to the Stern layer interface, showing excellent agreement with electrophoretic mobility measurements. In another study, nanoparticles of gold, silver and polystyrene are functionalized with microRNA using a …

How Predictive Analytics Persuade The Way We Think And Make Decisions, Desiree Depriest
How Predictive Analytics Persuade The Way We Think And Make Decisions, Desiree Depriest
SIDLIT Conference
Global access to the Internet has created a virtual landscape where our browsing habits are open-sourced, gathered and then our web activities are overloaded with predictive or persuasive sliced information. Companies invest billions of dollars to buy and sell consumer information gathered from tracking our searches and internet habits without our knowledge or consent. Companies input gathered information into complex neural networks that produce predictive and persuasive analytics to increase our consumption and beliefs. An algorithm assumes our future consumer behaviors, but does it fail to understand our attitudes about the persuasion approach itself?

Ecohydrology Of Coastal Wetland In South Florida Under Sea Level Rise: A Combination Of Stable Isotope Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, And Spatial Analysis, Lu Zhai
Open Access Dissertations
In southern Florida, conservation of coastal wetlands is facing two challenges under sea level rise (SLR): (1) How to estimate and predict encroachment of mangroves and other halophyte vegetation into the areas previously covered by freshwater species? (2) How to allocate more freshwater from Lake Okeechobee in middle Florida to the coastal wetlands (e.g., Everglades) to counteract increasing saltwater intrusion? Fundamental to the above challenges is saltwater intrusion associated with SLR, which can increase the soil pore water salinity to levels where freshwater species cannot survive. The overall aim of my dissertation is to access the potential changes in vegetation …

Spatiotemporal Variation In Frugivore Assemblages And Population Dynamics Of An Invasive Shrub, Schinus Terebinthifolius, Kelley D. Erickson
Open Access Dissertations
Multiple introductions of an exotic species can facilitate invasion success by allowing for a wider range of expressed trait values in the adventive range. Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Brazilian Pepper) is an invasive shrub that was introduced into Florida in two separate introductions and has subsequently hybridized, resulting in three distinct lineages (eastern, western and hybrid). In the first chapter, to determine whether allocation of above ground biomass differed by introduction history we destructively sampled 257 stems from each of 6 populations with differing introduction histories. The proportion of aboveground biomass allocated to fruit, wood and leaves differed among the three …

Quantum Control Via A Genetic Algorithm Of The Field Ionization Pathway Of A Rydberg Electron, Vincent C. Gregoric, Xinyue Kang, Zhimin Cheryl Liu, Zoe A. Rowley, Thomas J. Carroll, Michael W. Noel
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Quantum control of the pathway along which a Rydberg electron field ionizes is experimentally and computationally demonstrated. Selective field ionization is typically done with a slowly rising electric field pulse. The (1/n*)4 scaling of the classical ionization threshold leads to a rough mapping between arrival time of the electron signal and principal quantum number of the Rydberg electron. This is complicated by the many avoided level crossings that the electron must traverse on the way to ionization, which in general leads to broadening of the time-resolved field ionization signal. In order to control the ionization pathway, thus …

The Genomic Observatories Metadatabase (GeOMe, http://www.geome-db.org/) is an open access repository for geographic and ecological metadata associated with biosamples and genetic data. Whereas public databases have served as vital repositories for nucleotide sequences, they do not accession all the metadata required for ecological or evolutionary analyses. GeOMe fills this need, providing a user-friendly, web-based interface for both data contributors and data recipients. The interface allows data contributors to create a customized yet standard-compliant spreadsheet that captures the temporal and geospatial context of each biosample. These metadata are then validated and permanently linked to archived genetic data stored in the …

Aligning Theory And Evidence-Based Practices To Enhance Human Flourishing In Nurse Executives, Jim D'Alfonso
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Today’s nurse executives lead highly complex and bureaucratic organizations undergoing sweeping reform at an unprecedented rate of change. Change and high levels of stress are the norm in health care, and ineffective stress management can hinder organizational performance and adversely impact personal wellbeing. The risks of nurse executive burnout and unprecedented turnover led to the development of a 4-hour program to teach theory-guided and evidence-based stress management techniques. The program was intended to increase awareness, enhance effective stress management skills, and improve the nurse executive’s ability to flourish in high stress environments. A pre-intervention and 6-month post-intervention assessment (n …

Label Position And Its Impact On Willingness To Pay For Products Containing Genetically Modified Organisms, Ruskin Gautam
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Food labels play an important role in communicating information. Labels provide information about production techniques, nutrition and ingredient information, and quality of a product (i.e. federal grade standards for eggs, U.S.D.A. quality grades on beef and pork). These are some of the key product attributes that consumers seek while making purchasing decisions. However, labels can be confusing and misleading and at times consumers simply ignore them. Research on the placement and effectiveness of labels conducted over the past few decades have found that information on the label influences buying habits. Food manufacturers could strategically use or place such attributes of …

Extrafollicular Activities: Perspectives On Hiv Infection, Germinal Centerindependent Maturation Pathways, And Kshv-Mediated Lymphoproliferation, Jennifer Totonchy
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Early events in the pathogenesis of KSHV-associated lymphoproliferations in the context of HIV disease remain poorly understood. Recent research indicates that latent HIV infection causes persistent immune dysfunction in B cell follicles. Simultaneously, lack of T cell immune surveillance in the lymph nodes dysregulates the biology of EBV. In sum, these defects bias B lymphocyte maturation away from traditional T cell-dependent germinal center-mediated pathways and towards extrafollicular pathways. Recent advances in B lymphocyte immunology suggest that extrafollicular maturation pathways for antibody secreting cells are more flexible and robust than previously believed. These responses are now understood to be both durable …
