The concept that solid tumors are maintained by a productive interplay between neoplastic and non-neoplastic elements has gained traction with the demonstration that stromal fibroblasts and immune system cells dictate cancer development and progression. While less studied, brain tumor (glioma) biology is likewise influenced by non-neoplastic immune system cells (macrophages and microglia) which interact with neoplastic glioma cells to create a unique physiological state (glioma ecosystem) distinct from that found in the normal tissue. To explore this neoplastic ground state, we leveraged several preclinical mouse models of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) optic glioma, a low-grade astrocytoma whose formation and maintenance …

An Exploration Of Rhythm Perception In African Penguins (Spheniscus Demersus), Irene A. Fobe
An Exploration Of Rhythm Perception In African Penguins (Spheniscus Demersus), Irene A. Fobe
Theses
Rhythmic properties in penguin vocalizations may be unique to individuals. Rhythm perception is a cognitive ability previously thought to be exclusive to vocal-learning species who have the neurological complexities required to mimic conspecific and heterospecific vocalizations. Discovering rhythm perception in penguins would provide insight on penguins’ ability to recognize kin using auditory cues, and discount theories constraining rhythm perception to vocal-learning animals. The goal of this study was to learn if African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) could perceive changes in rhythm using a habituation-dishabituation paradigm. Subjects were 32-38 African penguins housed at the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. Penguins were …
Exploring Gria2 Sequence Variations Using Virtual Reality, Jimmy Fan Zhang
Exploring Gria2 Sequence Variations Using Virtual Reality, Jimmy Fan Zhang
Theses
The effective visualization and presentation of biological data is of critical importance to research scientists. The increasing rate at which experiments generate data has only exacerbated the problem. While bioinformatics datasets continue to increase in size and complexity, the shift to adopt new user interface (UI) paradigms has historically lagged. Consequently, a major bottleneck for analysis of next-generation sequencing data is the continued use of UIs primarily inspired from the 1990’s through the early 2000’s. This paper presents the novel use of virtual reality (VR) as a medium for visualizing genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data. Using the Gria2 (GluR2 or …

Crying And Attachment Style: The Role Of Romantic Relationships, Katherine L. Fiori, Jessica Buthmann, Christy A. Denckla
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Crying is an attachment behavior that functions to elicit support from others (Nelson, 1998); the context in which the crying occurs is important in understanding whether it is adaptive or maladaptive (Hendriks & Vingerhoets, 2006). However, very little research has examined whether and how attachment style is associated with adult crying, and if this association might vary by an individual’s relationship status. Using a sample of 305 first-year college students and a series of hierarchical regressions, we examined the moderating effect of relationship status on the associations between attachment style (measured using the Revised Experiences in Close Relationships Scale; Fraley, …

The number of cancer cases in every year has increased. One effort in reducing breast cancer cases is by using anti-angiogenesis which could prevent the growth and metastasis of cancer cells. Xxx the process of angiogenesis and metastasis in cancer cells are associated with the expression of Matrixmetalloproteinase- 9 (MMP-9) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). To reduce metastasis in cancer cells, it can be performed by giving plant extracts Cayratiatrifolia L (Domin), containing the active compound Resveratrol, delphinidin/malvidin and Quercetin. The content of the chemical compound of these herbs has immunomodulatory effects, which could potentially prevent angiopoitin, FGF and …

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic form of persistent inflammation. Meanwhile, Substance P is the most associated neuropeptide in neurogenic inflammation and hyperalgesia commonly found in chronic pain. Substance P act by binding to neurokinin-1 receptor. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist (CP-96,345) on Adjuvant Induced Arthritis rat model, induced by Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA). The objective is to attenuate neurogenic inflammation which in turn will increase the latency time of hyperalgesia response, decreases neurokinin-1 receptor expression, and inhibits the development of RA in AIA rat model. Rats were intra-articularly injected with CFA …

Stroke is still a major health problem in the world. Ischemic stroke accounts for 87% of all acute stroke occurrences. In 2013, the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA), published a Guideline for the Early Management of Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke. The managements consist of the use of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA), endovascular treatment, etc. Unlike acute ischemic stroke, until now, no guidelines have been provided about the management of chronic ischemic stroke that approved universally. The result of the study with the title of "Intra Arterial Heparin Flushing Increases Manual Muscle Test – Medical Research Councils …

Small Satellite Conference
Small spacecraft rarely have space for any thermal control subsystems and often must perform operations in “burst” mode as a result. The few spacecraft who do have control rely on low-complexity thermal control systems which conduct heat to the bus structure and then radiate the heat away. These simplistic techniques are sufficient for low power missions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) but are not capable of dumping the heat produced in new mission profiles that are in development. This is due to small spacecraft incorporating increasingly advanced subsystems which have difficult thermal control requirements such as propulsion systems or high-power …

The Tampon Tax: Sales Tax, Menstrual Hygiene Products, And Necessity Exemptions, Jennifer Bennett
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
Women in the United States face many economic obstacles that their male counterparts do not. Many of these obstacles – including the wage gap, economic issues related to childbearing, and implicit bias in the workplace, among others – are the result of multiple political, social, and cultural factors, making them hard to eliminate. The tampon tax is comparatively simple to take on: if state legislatures decide to remove it, women will no longer have to pay it. The term “tampon tax” refers to how the majority of states impose a general sales tax on tampons, pads, reusable menstrual cups, and …

What is the definition of what it means to be a person, what it means to be a human, and the differentiation between the two? Through deductive and inductive reasoning, the argument is made that there is only one universal person who is identical inside all of us and that it is actually our human qualities which make us unique. Similarities and differences are highlighted between the author’s person and the established philosophical views of personhood, including Buddhist, David Hume, Cartesian and Hindu philosophies on personal identity. The author suggests that the nature of human hood and the nature of …

Inactivation Of The Major Hemolysin Gene Influences Expression Of The Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase Gene Swra In The Insect Pathogen Serratia Sp. Strain Scbi, Lauren M. Petersen, Kaitlyn Lacourse, Tim A. Schoner, Helge Bode, Louis S. Tisa
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
Hemolysins are important virulence factors for many bacterial pathogens, including Serratia marcescens. The role of the major hemolysin gene in the insect pathogen Serratia sp. SCBI was investigated using both forward and reverse genetics approaches. Introduction of the major hemolysin gene into Escherichia coli resulted in a gain of both virulence and hemolytic activity. Inactivation of this hemolysin in Serratia sp. SCBI resulted in loss of hemolysis, but did not attenuate insecticidal activity. Unexpectedly, inactivation of the hemolysin gene in Serratia sp. SCBI resulted in significantly increased motility as well as increased antimicrobial activity. qRT-PCR analysis of mutants with a …

Recent results in the assembly of DNA into structures and arrays with nanoscale features and patterns have opened the possibility of using DNA for sub-10 nm lithographic patterning of semiconductor devices. Super-resolution microscopy is being actively developed for DNA-based imaging and is compatible with inline optical metrology techniques for high volume manufacturing. Here, we combine DNA tile assembly with state-dependent super-resolution microscopy to introduce crystal-PAINT as a novel approach for metrology of DNA arrays. Using this approach, we demonstrate optical imaging and characterization of DNA arrays revealing grain boundaries and the temperature dependence of array quality. For finite arrays, analysis …

The Influence Of Socialization On The Acculturation Of Vietnamese American Adolescents, Nicole Citerella
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Acculturation is the process of cultural change (Berry, Phinney, Sam, & Vedder, 2010). The influence of socialization on acculturation using Berry’s (1980) theory of acculturation was examined. According to Berry’s (1980) theory the process of acculturation includes maintenance of the heritage culture and contact participation in the host culture. Information was collected from an examination of individual interviews of nine adolescent, first-, second-, or third-generation Vietnamese American participants, ages 12–14, from two public middle schools in the United States. An analysis of the data produced four themes under maintenance of the heritage culture: religious influence, cultural awareness, family experience, and …

Poly(ethylene glycol)-conjugated polyethylenimine (PEG-PEI) is a widely studied cationic polymer used to develop non-viral vectors for siRNA therapy of genetic disorders including cancer. Cell lines stably expressing luciferase reporter protein typically evaluate the transfection efficacy of siRNA/PEG-PEI complexes, however recent findings revealed that PEG-PEI can reduce luciferase expression independent of siRNA. This study elucidates a cause of the false positive effect in luciferase assays by using polymer nanoassemblies (PNAs) made from PEG, PEI, poly-(L-lysine) (PLL), palmitate (PAL), and deoxycholate (DOC): PEG-PEI (2P), PEG-PEI-PAL (3P), PEG-PLL (2P′), PEG-PLL-PAL (3P′), and PEG-PEI-DOC (2PD). Evaluation Framework For Effective Hiv/Public Health Programming In Nigeria, Saheed Ottun
Capstone Collection
Evaluation is a buzzword in the field of development. How can one ensure the incorporation of effective monitoring and assessment framework in HIV/AIDS and public health programming that will impact positively on the reproductive health of young adults in Nigeria? In most public corporations in Nigeria, there is hardly any conscious effort on the part of the government to conduct either process evaluation or impact assessment on various government projects and policy, especially on HIV/public health programming. This course-linked capstone thematically illustrated the current state of the problem by providing in-depth analysis of the degree of HIV impact on the …

The Effect Of An Increase In Lead In The Water System On Fertility And Birth Outcomes: The Case Of Flint, Michigan, Daniel Grossman, David J.G. Slusky
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Flint changed its public water source in April 2014, increasing lead exposure. The effects of lead in water on fertility and birth outcomes are not well established. Exploiting variation in the timing of births we find fertility rates decreased by 12%, fetal death rates increased by 58% (a selection effect from a culling of the least healthy fetuses), and overall health at birth decreased (from scarring), compared to other cities in Michigan. Given recent efforts to establish a registry of residents exposed, these results suggests women who miscarried, had a stillbirth or had a newborn with health complications should register.

Assessing The Influence Of Temporal Autocorrelations On The Population Dynamics Of A Disturbance Specialist Plant Population In A Random Environment, Eric A. Eager, Diana Pilson, Helen M. Alexander, Brigitte Tenhumberg
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Biological populations are strongly influenced by random variations in their environment, which are often autocorrelated in time. For disturbance specialist plant populations, the frequency and intensity of environmental stochasticity (via disturbances) can drive the qualitative nature of their population dynamics. In this article, we extended our earlier model to explore the effect of temporally autocorrelated disturbances on population persistence. In our earlier work, we only assumed disturbances were independent and identically distributed in time. We proved that the plant seed bank population converges in distribution, and we showed that the mean and variance in seed bank population size were both …

Trade-Offs: The Production Of Sustainability In Households, Kirstin Marie Elizabeth Munro
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past half-century, environmental problems have become increasingly serious and seemingly intractable, and a careless, clueless, or contemptuous consumer is often portrayed as the root cause of this environmental decline. This study takes a different approach to evaluating the demand for resources by households, assessing possible pro-environmental paths forward through a study of highly ecologically-conscious households. By modeling "green" households as producers of sustainability rather than consumers of environmental products, the sustainability work that takes place in households is brought into focus. An investigation of household sustainability production makes possible the evaluation of the trade-offs inherent in these pro-environmental …

Guided Imagery: A Technique To Benefit Youth At Risk, Lisa M. Skeens
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Guided imagery is a valuable intervention strategy that can benefit children who are at risk for social, academic, and mental health problems. Guided imagery is a technique that employs imagination, emotions, and a spectrum of bodily senses (Naparstek, 1994). This particular technique can be applied in community and academic settings to help enhance self-efficacy and mental health functioning for youth at risk. The need to implement creative interventions for youth can be overlooked by the chaos of poverty and social problems in vulnerable communities. Many schools and community agencies carry the burden of managing daily crises with few resources. This …
