Elman Neural Network Trained By Using Artificial Bee Colony For The Classification Of Learning Style Based On Students Preferences, Nor Liyana Mohd Shuib, Ahmad Shukri Mohd Noor, Haruna Chiroma, Tutut Herawan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Efforts have been made in recent times by educators and researchers to provide learners with appropriate learning objects (LO) based on their learning style (LS). Previous studies on the classification of LS, typically classifyLS based on the description of the LS preference itself without giving attention to the student preferences. This study presents a new knowledge in classifying learning material based on learning style. In this paper, we propose Elman Neural Network (ENN) trained by using Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) (ABCENN) to create a classifier for the classification of LS (Diverging, Accommodating, Converging, and Assimilating) based on student preference of teaching …

Numerical Solution Of A Forward-Backward Equation From Physiology, M. Filomena Teodoro
Numerical Solution Of A Forward-Backward Equation From Physiology, M. Filomena Teodoro
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The aim of this paper is to determine the numerical solution of an equation which models the nerve conduction in a myelinated axon. An appropriate stimulus begins a propagate action potential which travels down the axon. It can be understood as a traveling wave of voltage. It is proposed a computational approximation for the solution of a forward-backward differential equation that models nerve conduction. We look for a solution of an equation defined in R, which tends to known values at ±¥. Extending the approach introduced in [13, 29, 14] for linear case, a numerical method for the solution of …

Differential And Integral Equations For The 3-Variable Hermite-Frobenius-Euler And Frobenius-Genocchi Polynomials, Serkan Araci, Mumtaz Riyas, Shahid Ahmad Wani, Subuhi Khan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The main goal of the present article is to derive some new classes of differential equations including partial and integrodifferential equations for the 3-variable Hermite-Frobenius-Euler and Frobenius-Genocchi polynomials by use of the factorization method. We also perform a further investigation for aforementioned polynomials and derive corresponding homogeneous Volterra integral equations. The differential equations for these families of polynomials contain, as their special cases, the differential equations for some known special polynomials. Moreover, the inclusion of integral equations is a new and recent investigation which adds some extra attention to these polynomials.

Solitary Wave Solutions Of The Benjamin-Bona- Mahoney-Burgers Equation With Dual Power-Law Nonlinearity, Mostafa M. A. Khater, Dianchen Lu, Emad H. M. Zahran
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we employ the extended tanh function method to find the exact traveling wave solutions and solitary wave solutions involving parameters of the Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney-Burgers equation with dual power-law nonlinearity. When these parameters are taken to be special values, the solitary wave solutions are derived from the exact traveling wave solutions. These studies reveal that the Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney-Burgers Equation with Dual Power-law nonlinearity has a rich variety of solutions

Mathematical Approach For Effect Of Growth On The Mechanical Stresses During Soft Tissues And Avascular Tumor, S. R. Mahmoud, Shafeek. A. Ghaleb, A. K. Alzahrani, E. Ghandourah
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this Paper, the mathematical model for the study of the distribution of mechanical stresses by the cells within the soft tissues and tumor tissue is discussed. To describe the impact of isotropic growth on the mechanical stresses based on the linear elasticity theory and to study the process of continuous growth. Constitutive law to describe a linearly elastic tumor with continuous volume growth is combined in the model. Two examples is discussed, First case, in one dimensional model of tumor growth in rectangular tube, The model is solved in terms of radial displacement and stresses. In the second case, …

Step-Stress Partially Accelerated Life Tests Model In Estimation Of Inverse Weibull Parameters Under Progressive Type-Ii Censoring, Ahmed A. Soliman, Essam A. Ahmed, N. A. Abou-Elheggag, Samah. M. Ahmed
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, inverse Weibull (IW) distribution with the step-stress model and progressive type-II censoring data are considered. The maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation are discussed for the distribution parameters and the acceleration factor. The outline criteria in Bayesian approach are settled under utilized non-informative and gamma informative priors under balancedsquared error and balanced linear-exponential loss functions with the help of MCMC method. Finally, the numerical example and simulation study are constructed to assess the obtaining results.

On The Inverse Problem For Thermostatted Kinetic Models With Application To The Financial Market, Carlo Bianca, Aly Kombargi
On The Inverse Problem For Thermostatted Kinetic Models With Application To The Financial Market, Carlo Bianca, Aly Kombargi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper is concerned with the coupling of the inverse problem theory with the thermostatted kinetic theory. Specifically an inverse problem is proposed where the data vector consists of m known measures, the data kernel is a m×n matrix which depends on the distribution function vector that is solution of the thermostatted kinetic theory model, and the unknown source or signal consists of a n-dimensional vector. In particular the paper focuses on the under-determined inverse problem, namely m < n, and the solution is obtained by employing the principle of maximum Shannon entropy of the information theory. Applications refer to the financial market and specifically to the derivation of the information which triggers the evolution of global stock market indexes. Future research directions are also discussed into the last section of the paper.

The Social Indicators Final Project Report, Simone Barley-Greenfield
PREP Reports & Publications
New Hampshire’s 1000 square mile coastal zone is showing signs of stress in its rivers, shorelines, and two major estuaries. This stress stems from significant population increases and subsequent development, as well as intensifying weather events coupled with land use policies inadequate to manage the impacts of these anthropogenic and natural stressors.1 To effectively manage this complex social ecological system, the management community must expand its current monitoring efforts. Tracking ecological data only tells half the story; collecting social data sheds light on how people engage coastal ecosystems and highlights values crucial for affecting behavior change. The goal of this …

Vii. Developmental Trajectories Of Children’S Emotional Reactivity After The Birth Of A Sibling, Patty X. Kuo, Brenda L. Volling, Richard Gonzalez, Wonjung Oh, Tianyi Yu
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Emotional reactivity in this chapter refers to children’s moodiness, worrying, emotional instability, and their inability to emotionally cope with new situations (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2000) rather than a temperamental characteristic. Emotionally reactive children often have difficulties adapting to change and are described as moody and anxious. Because the birth of a sibling is considered a significant change within the family, emotionally reactive children may become increasingly emotionally labile after the birth. During the transition to siblinghood, Stewart (1990) reported that children experienced an increase in emotional intensity, a decrease in the range of mood expressions, and an increased tendency to …

Following the production of western gray wolf (Canis lupus) x western coyote (Canis latrans) hybrids via artificial insemination (AI), the present article documents that the hybrids survived in captivity for at least 4 years and successfully bred with each other. It further reports that backcrossing one of the hybrids to a male gray wolf by AI also resulted in the birth of live pups that have survived for at least 10 months. All male hybrids (F1 and F2) produced sperm by about 10 months of age, and sperm quality of the F1 males fell within the …

Circular Reasoning Is Not The Uroboros: Rejecting Perennialism As A Psychological Theory, Glenn Hartelius
Circular Reasoning Is Not The Uroboros: Rejecting Perennialism As A Psychological Theory, Glenn Hartelius
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Efforts to present valid evidence for perennialist models do not withstand critical scrutiny. One strategy common to most versions of perennialism points to perceived patterns in reports of spiritual experiences, whether from traditional, clinical, or phenomenological accounts as evidence for such an approach; the shortcoming is that these same patterns are the basis for perennialist premises. Offering one’s premises as evidence for their conclusions is circular reasoning, and does not constitute valid support for an idea. Pointing to similarities between reports of spiritual or other transformative experiences is what inspires perennialist models, but is not evidence for their validity. Careful …
Moving Beyond Materialism: Can Transpersonal Psychology Contribute To Cultural Transformation?, Steve Taylor
Moving Beyond Materialism: Can Transpersonal Psychology Contribute To Cultural Transformation?, Steve Taylor
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The issue of whether it is possible to separate science and metaphysics is discussed, with reference to William James and the writings of quantum physicists. The metaphysical framework of scientific materialism is analysed and some of its key assumptions are identified. It is suggested that these assumptions are becoming increasingly untenable, as is evident by the advocacy of post-materialist science by some contemporary scientists. The main appeal of transpersonal psychology to students and practitioners is arguably its lack of allegiance to a materialist metaphysics. Rather than allying itself to the metaphysical paradigm of naturalistic science or attempting to bracket out …

The Use Of Persistent Explorer Artificial Ants To Solve The Car Sequencing Problem, Kieran O'Sullivan
Dissertations
Ant Colony Optimisation is a widely researched meta-heuristic which uses the behaviour and pheromone laying activities of foraging ants to find paths through graphs. Since the early 1990’s this approach has been applied to problems such as the Travelling Salesman Problem, Quadratic Assignment Problem and Car Sequencing Problem to name a few. The ACO is not without its problems it tends to find good local optima and not good global optima. To solve this problem modifications have been made to the original ACO such as the Max Min ant system. Other solutions involve combining it with Evolutionary Algorithms to improve …

Biological nitrogen removal (BNR) systems are increasingly used in the United States in both centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and decentralized advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) to reduce N discharged in wastewater effluent. However, the potential for BNR systems to be sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, needs to be evaluated to assess their environmental impact. We quantified and compared N2O emissions from BNR systems at a WWTP (Field's Point, Providence, RI) and three types of advanced OWTS (Orenco Advantex AX 20, SeptiTech Series D, and Bio-Microbics MicroFAST) in nine Rhode Island residences (n = 3 …

Providing feedback to students as they learn to integrate individual concepts into complex systems is an important way to help them to develop robust understanding, but it is challenging in large, undergraduate classes for instructors to provide feedback that is frequent and directed enough to help individual students. Various scaffolds can be used to help students engage in self-regulated learning and generate internal feedback to improve their learning. This study examined the use of enhanced answer keys with added reflection questions and instruction as scaffolds for engaging undergraduate students in self-regulated learning within an introductory biology course. Study findings show …

Stability Analysis Of A Model With Integrated Control For Population Growth Of The Aedes Aegypti Mosquito, Ana M. Pulecio, Anibal Munoz, Gerard Olivar
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We present a system of ordinary nonlinear differential equations describing the population growth dynamics of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the main transmitter of the dengue virus in Colombia. This model incorporates the three types of known control for mosquito eradication: mechanical, biological and chemical, focusing on biological control through the use of the Wolbachia bacterium, which is the new hope for the control of the diseases transmitted by this mosquito. A local stability analysis of the model is performed on the three equilibrium points that are found, determining the conditions under which those points become stable or unstable. Finally, we …

Understanding The Transition From Benthic Egg To Dispersive Larvae: Observations On The Intra-Capsular Growth And Development Of A Marine Snail (Kelletia Kelletii), Megan N. Wilson
Biological Sciences
It has long been understood that the larval life stage is responsible for the dispersion of many marine organisms across their biogeographic range. Such organisms have a bipartite life cycle, existing in the water column and subject to oceanographic processes as planktonic larvae before settling to suitable habitat along the benthos where they grow and mature. Previous studies have demonstrated that larval growth rate and behavior in the water column can alter larval position in relation to ocean currents and affects their dispersal pathway. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the growth rate of the earliest larval stage …

Lidar Aboveground Vegetation Biomass Estimates In Shrublands: Prediction, Uncertainties And Application To Coarser Scales, Aihua Li, Shital Dhakal, Nancy F. Glenn, Lucas P. Spaete
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Our study objectives were to model the aboveground biomass in a xeric shrub-steppe landscape with airborne light detection and ranging (Lidar) and explore the uncertainty associated with the models we created. We incorporated vegetation vertical structure information obtained from Lidar with ground-measured biomass data, allowing us to scale shrub biomass from small field sites (1 m subplots and 1 ha plots) to a larger landscape. A series of airborne Lidar-derived vegetation metrics were trained and linked with the field-measured biomass in Random Forests (RF) regression models. A Stepwise Multiple Regression (SMR) model was also explored as a comparison. Our results …
