Obesity and cigarette smoking are correlated through complex relationships. Common genetic causes may contribute to these correlations. In this study, we selected 241 loci potentially associated with body mass index (BMI) based on the Genetic Investigation of ANthropometric Traits (GIANT) consortium data and calculated a BMI genetic risk score (BMI-GRS) for 17,037 individuals of European descent from the Oncoarray Project of the International Lung Cancer Consortium (ILCCO). Smokers had a significantly higher BMI-GRS than never-smokers (p = 0.016 and 0.010 before and after adjustment for BMI, respectively). The BMI-GRS was also positively correlated with pack-years of smoking (p < 0.001) in smokers. Based on causal network inference analyses, seven and five of 241 SNPs were classified to pleiotropic models for BMI/smoking status and BMI/pack-years, respectively. Among them, three and four SNPs associated with smoking status and pack-years (p < 0.05), respectively, were followed up in the ever-smoking data of the Tobacco, Alcohol and Genetics (TAG) consortium. Among these seven candidate SNPs, one SNP (rs11030104, BDNF) …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been called “the most complicated disease of the most complex organ of the body” and is an increasingly high-profile public health issue. Many patients report long-term impairments following even “mild” injuries, but reliable criteria for diagnosis and prognosis are lacking. Every clinical trial for TBI treatment to date has failed to demonstrate reliable and safe improvement in outcomes, and the existing body of literature is insufficient to support the creation of a new classification system. Concussion, or mild TBI, is a highly heterogeneous phenomenon, and numerous factors interact dynamically to influence an individual’s recovery trajectory. …

Evaluation Of Textural Properties And Flavor Substances Of Three Varieties Of Fresh Lotus Root, Han Xiaomiao, Luo Qing, Wu Suxi
Food and Machinery
Phy-chemical properties and flavor substances of the three varieties of Hubei lotus root were studied by electronic nose and GC-MS. The results showed that there were significant differences in the physical and chemical properties except the total fiber content among the three hybrid varieties, and texture properties of the hybrid variety NO.5 of lotus root were better than the hybrid varieties NO.3 and NO.4. Detection of flavor substances showed that 40 kinds of flavor substances were detected in NO.5, that 35 kinds of flavor substances were detected in NO.3, that 28 kinds of flavor substances were detected in NO.4. Effects Of Controlled Freezing Point Technology Combined With The Modified Humidity Packaging On Preservation For Toona Sinensis, Yang Hui, Mao Weilin, Zhao Shouhuan, Zhao Hongyuan, Zhang Le, Shi Guanying, Wang Xiaomin, Wang Zhaogai
Food and Machinery
Toona sinensis sprouts were packaged in 0.06 mm thick perforated PE bags and stored at -0.5 ℃(controlled freezing point) after pre-cooling at 4 ℃ for 12 h. In order to investigate the effects of controlled freezing point technology combined with the modified humidity packaging on preservation for Toona sinensis, the changes of weight losses rate, ascorbic acid, soluble protein, chlorophyll, total polyphenol, flavonoid, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and polyphenol oxidase (PPO)activities were measured. The results indicated that the proper perforation area of PE bags stored at -0.5 ℃ was 141.3 mm2 (0.14% of total area), which decreased the …

Seagrassnet Monitoring In Great Bay, New Hampshire, 2016, Frederick T. Short
PREP Reports & Publications
SeagrassNet is a global monitoring program begun in 2001 and designed to scientifically detect and document seagrass habitat change (Short et al. 2006a, 2014). Monitoring of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) in the Great Bay Estuary using SeagrassNet was conducted in Portsmouth Harbor between 2001 and 2009 (Short et al. 2006b, Rivers and Short 2007), and in Great Bay starting in 2007 (Short 2009). Results from SeagrassNet 2016, supported by PREP and conducted in Great Bay, are described in this report.
Cellular Mechanisms Of Cortisol-Induced Changes In Mauthner-Cell Excitability In The Startle Circuit Of Goldfish, Daniel R. Bronson, Thomas Preuss
Cellular Mechanisms Of Cortisol-Induced Changes In Mauthner-Cell Excitability In The Startle Circuit Of Goldfish, Daniel R. Bronson, Thomas Preuss
Publications and Research
Predator pressure and olfactory cues (alarm substance) have been shown to modulate Mauthner cell (M-cell) initiated startle escape responses (C-starts) in teleost fish. The regulation of such adaptive responses to potential threats is thought to involve the release of steroid hormones such as cortisol. However, the mechanism by which cortisol may regulate M-cell excitability is not known. Here, we used intrasomatic, in vivo recordings to elucidate the acute effects of cortisol on M-cell membrane properties and sound evoked post-synaptic potentials (PSPs). Cortisol tonically decreased threshold current in the M-cell within 10 min before trending towards baseline excitability over an hour …

Testing The Motor Simulation Account Of Source Errors For Actions In Recall, N Lange, Tj Hollins, P Bach
Testing The Motor Simulation Account Of Source Errors For Actions In Recall, N Lange, Tj Hollins, P Bach
School of Psychology
Observing someone else perform an action can lead to false memories of self-performance - the observation inflation effect. One explanation is that action simulation via mirror neuron activation during action observation is responsible for observation inflation by enriching memories of observed actions with motor representations. In three experiments we investigated this account of source memory failures, using a novel paradigm that minimized influences of verbalization and prior object knowledge. Participants worked in pairs to take turns acting out geometric shapes and letters. The next day, participants recalled either actions they had performed or those they had observed. Experiment 1 showed …

This descriptive and correlation study using 77 teenage girls as sample. Sampling technique used stratified random sampling technique. The research used instrument Zila & Ifdil Kepercayaan Diri Inventori and Zila & Ifdil Body Images Inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis technique and correlational analysis. The findings reveal that teenager girl's self confidence is generally in the medium category, teenage girl's body image is generally in the neutral category, and there is a …
Role Of Viruses Within Metaorganisms: Ciona Intestinalis As A Model System, Brittany A. Leigh
Role Of Viruses Within Metaorganisms: Ciona Intestinalis As A Model System, Brittany A. Leigh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Marine animals live and thrive in a literal sea of microorganisms, yet are often able to maintain specific associations that are largely dictated by the environment, host immunity and microbial interactions. Animal-associated microbiomes include bacteria and viruses that vastly outnumber host cells, especially in the gut environment, and are considered to be integral parts of healthy, functioning animals that act as a metaorganism. However, the processes underlying the initial establishment of these microbial communities are not very well understood. This dissertation focuses on the establishment of a well-known developmental animal model, Ciona intestinalis (sea squirt), to study the establishment and …

Silver-Haired Bats Associated With Abandoned Mines In Colorado Provide Insights Into Winter Habitat And Roost Use, Lea' R. Bonewell, Mark A. Hayes, Nancy Lamantia-Olson, Elijah Wostl, Kirk W. Navo
Western North American Naturalist
Herein we present the first published records (N = 5) of silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) roosting in abandoned mines in Colorado during winter. The records are based on internal surveys of abandoned mines during the winter period from 2004 to 2008. These noteworthy records provide insights into the winter roosting ecology and habitat use of this species in southwestern Colorado.
