How Metamorphosis Is Different In Plethodontids: Larval Life History Perspectives On Life-Cycle Evolution, Christopher K. Beachy, Travis Ryan, Ronald M. Bonett

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Plethodontid salamanders exhibit biphasic, larval form paedomorphic, and direct developing life cycles. This diversity of developmental strategies exceeds that of any other family of terrestrial vertebrate. Here we compare patterns of larval development among the three divergent lineages of biphasic plethodontids and other salamanders. We discuss how patterns of life-cycle evolution and larval ecology might have produced a wide array of larval life histories. Compared with many other salamanders, most larval plethodontids have relatively slow growth rates and sometimes exceptionally long larval periods (up to 60 mo). Recent phylogenetic analyses of life-cycle evolution indicate that ancestral plethodontids were likely direct …

Hne-Modified Proteins In Down Syndrome: Involvement In Development Of Alzheimer Disease Neuropathology, Eugenio Barone, Elizabeth Head, D. Allan Butterfield, Marzia Perluigi Oct 2017

Hne-Modified Proteins In Down Syndrome: Involvement In Development Of Alzheimer Disease Neuropathology, Eugenio Barone, Elizabeth Head, D. Allan Butterfield, Marzia Perluigi

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Down syndrome (DS), trisomy of chromosome 21, is the most common genetic form of intellectual disability. The neuropathology of DS involves multiple molecular mechanisms, similar to AD, including the deposition of beta-amyloid (Aβ) into senile plaques and tau hyperphosphorylating in neurofibrillary tangles. Interestingly, many genes encoded by chromosome 21, in addition to being primarily linked to amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) pathology, are responsible for increased oxidative stress (OS) conditions that also result as a consequence of reduced antioxidant system efficiency. However, redox homeostasis is disturbed by overproduction of Aβ, which accumulates into plaques across the lifespan in DS as well as …

Teaching An Honors Seminar On #Blacklivesmatter In East Texas, Ervin Malakaj, Jeffrey L. Littlejohn, Kimberly Bell, Patrick J. Lewis, Julia D. May

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In spring 2017, Ervin Malakaj (Assistant Professor of German) and Jeffrey L. Littlejohn (Professor of History) led a Difficult Dialogues seminar on #BlackLivesMatter for the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) Honors College. The seminar considered the complex historical, economic, and cultural forces that produced the movement along with the various responses to it. By mid-semester, however, the course had become a target for fake news blogs and websites. Critics of the #BlackLivesMatter movement attempted to portray the course as a propagandistic endeavor intended to force a left-wing ideology upon unwilling students who had reluctantly enrolled in the course in order …

Helping With The “How”: A Role For Honors In Civic Education, Craig Kaplowitz

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The current political moment in the United States puts an exclamation point on years of growing concern for our civic culture. We have a president who neither understands nor cares for the processes and norms of the American system of government, a Congress that seems almost indifferent to the real issues of governing for the public good, a news cycle driven by flippant tweets, and a toxic social media environment. There is little current recognition that, in our system, how we debate the alternatives and arrive at policies is as important for our long-term civic enterprise as the resulting policies …

Principals As Partners In Change: Insights On Common Core State Standards Implementation, Brian Lucas Oct 2017

Principals As Partners In Change: Insights On Common Core State Standards Implementation, Brian Lucas

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Since the introduction of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in 2010, the education world has experienced a paradigm shift in the pedagogical expectations of educators, and there have been a decidedly mixed results on the implementation of the new standards. This qualitative study explored the experiences of several school administrators across urban and suburban school settings in their implementation of the CCSS. Set within a practitioner-based framework of Dr. Michael Fullan’s drivers of change, this study examined the common large-scale change implementation strategies that were successful and those that provided the most obstacles to administrators, and identifies specific actions …

Thriving In Complexity: A Framework For Leadership Education, Daryl Watkins, Matthew Earnhardt, Linda Pittenger, Robin Roberts, Kees Rietsema, Janet Cosman-Ross

Publications

Technological advances, globalization, network complexity, and social complexity complicate almost every aspect of our organizations and environments. Leadership educators are challenged with developing leaders who can sense environmental cues, adapt to rapidly changing contexts, and thrive in uncertainty while adhering to their values systems. In a complex leadership context, inadequate leader responses can result in devastating organizational impacts akin to the butterfly effect from chaos theory. This paper advances a simple model for leadership education based on a program we designed to develop leaders who understand the nature of complex systems, reliably use their ethical value systems, are emotionally intelligent …

Reliability Analysis Of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls, Michael Powers Oct 2017

Reliability Analysis Of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Walls, Michael Powers

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Geosynthetic reinforced soil walls have been widely used for earth retention and stabilization in many geotechnical applications. In the traditional design of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls, Allowable Stress Design (ASD) is used to address the uncertainties. However, it cannot explicitly consider the uncertainties in a systematic way in the design process; especially geotechnical uncertainties are typically at high levels and problem-specific. Traditional methods usually result in over-conservativeness, inconsistence, and empiricism in the design practice. Recently there has been a trend of the application of reliability methods for design of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls to explicitly address uncertainties in the design …

Can Mine Reclamation With An Exotic Grass Species Precede Successful Restoration In Intermountain Grasslands? A Case Study With Agropyron Cristatum., Mark Mariano

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

We performed four experiments to test whether or not native plants germinated with physical and chemical contact with crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn.), a grass species native to Eurasia which has been widely used for mine reclamation in North America. In our study area Butte, Montana, A. cristatum was planted on capped mine waste and, in many cases, has formed a monoculture with a large buildup of leaf litter. We found there to be a much higher mean litter depth on these lands when compared to wild grasslands. Leaf litter proved to be a significant barrier for the establishment …

Maximal Swim Distance, Time, And Heart Rate While Wearing Labor-Wear And A Personal Flotation Device, Reece Gendreau Oct 2017

Maximal Swim Distance, Time, And Heart Rate While Wearing Labor-Wear And A Personal Flotation Device, Reece Gendreau

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between heart rate and swim distance or swim. The ultimate goal was to determine how long or how far a person could swim while wearing labor-wear and a personal flotation device. Additional parameters of age, and ending oxygen saturation were taken to determine if age or O2 saturation could be factors that would be a limitation of swim time or distance. The following questions were answered: “Will there be a significant difference between males and females in any observed measurement?”, “Will there be a correlation between heart …

Geology Of The Middle Member Of The Bakken Formation In Divide County, North Dakota, Mandy Brewer Oct 2017

Geology Of The Middle Member Of The Bakken Formation In Divide County, North Dakota, Mandy Brewer

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Upper Devonian-Lower Mississippian Bakken Formation of Williston Basin is a large unconventional oil and gas play consisting of a lower shale member, a middle member, and an upper shale member. The middle member is a production target because it contains porosity and petroleum expelled from the shale members around it. Variable production and sweet spots of the Bakken in the study area of Divide County, ND and 15 miles around Divide County in the USA prompted a closer look at middle member Bakken sediments. For this study, 606 wells were correlated and thin sections from two wells located 10.17 …

Climate Change And Common But Differentiated Responsibilities For The Ocean, Robin Kundis Craig Oct 2017

Climate Change And Common But Differentiated Responsibilities For The Ocean, Robin Kundis Craig

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Nations’ impacts on the ocean and their impacts on climate change are linked, especially given the synergistic interactions among these impacts on the two largest global commons—the atmosphere and the ocean. This article argues that climate change mitigation law, as represented internationally by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its follow-on agreements, can better reflect nations’ broader Common but Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR) by taking ocean impacts into account—in particular, contributions to ocean acidification and to marine fishing.

Photochemical Generation And Kinetic Studies Of High-Valent Metal-Oxo Intermediates Supported By Corrole And Porphyrin Ligands, Ngo Fung Lee Oct 2017

Photochemical Generation And Kinetic Studies Of High-Valent Metal-Oxo Intermediates Supported By Corrole And Porphyrin Ligands, Ngo Fung Lee

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

High-valent transition metal-oxo intermediates are of fundamental importance because of their central role as active oxidizing species in enzymatic and synthetic catalytic oxidations. Many transition metal catalysts have been extensively studied as models of the ubiquitous cytochrome P450 enzymes to probe the sophisticated oxygen atom transfer mechanism as well as to invent enzyme-like oxidation catalysts.

In this work, photolysis of highly photo-labile corrole-manganese(IV) bromates or nitrites by visible light was studied in two corrole systems with different electronic environments. The corrole systems under studied include 5,10,15- tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole (TPFC) and 5,10,15-triphenylcorrole (TPC). As observed in both systems, homolytic cleavage of O-Br …

The Supreme Court's Last 30 Years Of Federal Indian Law: Looking For Equilibrium Or Supremacy?, Alexander Tallchief Skibine Oct 2017

The Supreme Court's Last 30 Years Of Federal Indian Law: Looking For Equilibrium Or Supremacy?, Alexander Tallchief Skibine

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Since 1831, Indian nations have been viewed as Domestic Dependent Nations located within the geographical boundaries of the United States. Although Chief Justice John Marshall acknowledged that Indian nations had a certain amount of sovereignty, the exact extent of such sovereignty as well as the place of tribes within the federal system has remained ill-defined. This Article examines what has been the role of the Supreme Court in integrating Indian nations as the third Sovereign within our federalist system. The Article accomplishes this task by examining the Court’s Indian law record in the last 30 years. The comprehensive survey of …

Intensified Foraging And The Roots Of Farming In China, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu Oct 2017

Intensified Foraging And The Roots Of Farming In China, Shengqian Chen, Pei-Lin Yu

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an accompanying paper (Journal of Anthropological Research 73(2):149–80, 2017), the authors assess current archaeological and paleobiological evidence for the early Neolithic of China. Emerging trends in archaeological data indicate that early agriculture developed variably: hunting remained important on the Loess Plateau, and aquatic-based foraging and protodomestication augmented cereal agriculture in South China. In North China and the Yangtze Basin, semisedentism and seasonal foraging persisted alongside early Neolithic culture traits such as organized villages, large storage structures, ceramic vessels, and polished stone tool assemblages. In this paper, we seek to explain incipient agriculture as a predictable, system-level cultural response …

Flagellar Swimming In Viscoelastic Fluids: Role Of Fluid Elastic Stress Revealed By Simulations Based On Experimental Data, Chuanbin Li, Boyang Qin, Arvind Gopinath, Paulo E. Arratia, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy Oct 2017

Flagellar Swimming In Viscoelastic Fluids: Role Of Fluid Elastic Stress Revealed By Simulations Based On Experimental Data, Chuanbin Li, Boyang Qin, Arvind Gopinath, Paulo E. Arratia, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many important biological functions depend on microorganisms' ability to move in viscoelastic fluids such as mucus and wet soil. The effects of fluid elasticity on motility remain poorly understood, partly because the swimmer strokes depend on the properties of the fluid medium, which obfuscates the mechanisms responsible for observed behavioural changes. In this study, we use experimental data on the gaits of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii swimming in Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids as inputs to numerical simulations that decouple the swimmer gait and fluid type in order to isolate the effect of fluid elasticity on swimming. In viscoelastic fluids, cells employing the …

Insights Into Transgenerational Epigenetics From Studies Of Ciliates, Olivia A. Pilling, Anna J. Rogers, Bethaney Gulla-Devaney, Laura A. Katz Oct 2017

Insights Into Transgenerational Epigenetics From Studies Of Ciliates, Olivia A. Pilling, Anna J. Rogers, Bethaney Gulla-Devaney, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Epigenetics, a term with many meanings, can be broadly defined as the study of dynamic states of the genome. Ciliates, a clade of unicellular eukaryotes, can teach us about the intersection of epigenetics and evolution due to the advantages of working with cultivable ciliate lineages, plus their tendency to express extreme phenotypes such as heritable doublet morphology. Moreover, ciliates provide a powerful model for studying epigenetics given the presence of dimorphic nuclei – a somatic macronucleus and germline micronucleus – within each cell. Here, we exemplify the power of studying ciliates to learn about epigenetic phenomena. We highlight “classical” examples …

Non-Linear Heart Rate And Blood Pressure Interaction In Response To Lower-Body Negative Pressure, Ajay K. Verma, Da Xu, Amanmeet Garg, Anita T. Cote, Andrew P. Blaber, Kouhyar Tavakolian Oct 2017

Non-Linear Heart Rate And Blood Pressure Interaction In Response To Lower-Body Negative Pressure, Ajay K. Verma, Da Xu, Amanmeet Garg, Anita T. Cote, Andrew P. Blaber, Kouhyar Tavakolian

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Early detection of hemorrhage remains an open problem. In this regard, blood pressure has been an ineffective measure of blood loss due to numerous compensatory mechanisms sustaining arterial blood pressure homeostasis. Here, we investigate the feasibility of causality detection in the heart rate and blood pressure interaction, a closed-loop control system, for early detection of hemorrhage. The hemorrhage was simulated via graded lower-body negative pressure (LBNP) from 0 to -40 mmHg. The research hypothesis was that a significant elevation of causal control in the direction of blood pressure to heart rate (i.e., baroreflex response) is an early indicator of central …

Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck Oct 2017

Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

The opening lines of Yanick Lahens’s Bain de lune (2014) find an unidentified narrator lying on a beach not far from the coastal community of Anse Bleue, staring at the worn, muddy boots of the man who has just discovered her lifeless body. As her narrative reveals, a hurricane has devastated the region over the past three days, and, in the wake of the storm, the deceased protagonist tries to piece together the fragmented memories of her life as a means of determining how she has ended up dead on the sand. From the very beginning of Lahens’s novel, however, …
