Biophysical Mechanisms Of Frequency-Dependence And Its Neuromodulation In Neurons In Oscillatory Networks, David Michael Fox
Biophysical Mechanisms Of Frequency-Dependence And Its Neuromodulation In Neurons In Oscillatory Networks, David Michael Fox
Dissertations
In response to oscillatory input, many isolated neurons exhibit a preferred frequency response in their voltage amplitude and phase shift. Membrane potential resonance (MPR), a maximum amplitude in a neuron’s input impedance at a non-zero frequency, captures the essential subthreshold properties of a neuron, which may provide a coordinating mechanism for organizing the activity of oscillatory neuronal networks around a given frequency. In the pyloric central pattern generator network of the crab Cancer borealis, for example, the pacemaker group pyloric dilator neurons show MPR at a frequency that is correlated with the network frequency. This dissertation uses the crab …
Roles Of Cosolvents On Protein Stability, Zhaoqian Su
Roles Of Cosolvents On Protein Stability, Zhaoqian Su
Dissertations
The function of a protein is determined by its three-dimensional structure which emerges from the delicate balance of forces involving atoms of the protein and the solvent. This balance can be perturbed by changing temperature, pressure, pH and by adding organic molecules known as cosolvents to the solution. Despite the wide use of cosolvents to perturb protein structures in the lab and in living systems, their molecular mechanisms are still not well established. Understanding these mechanisms is a problem of substantial interest, with potential application to the design of new drugs to target proteins. In this dissertation, we probe the …
Co2 Reduction Over Noble Metal/Carbon Nanotube Catalyst, Yuan Zhu
Co2 Reduction Over Noble Metal/Carbon Nanotube Catalyst, Yuan Zhu
Dissertations
Carbon nanotube-based Pt/Pd and Ru catalysts, independently synthesized by a microwave reaction technique, show good catalytic activity for CO2 reduction in the contexts of dry reforming (DR) of methane (CH4 + CO2 -> 2CO + 2H2) and reverse water gas shift (RWGS) (H2 + CO2 -> CO + H2O). Reaction temperatures range from 773 to 973 K, with system pressure at 30 psig. The feed molar ratios CH4/CO2 and CO2/H2 are varied from 0.5 to 2.0. Reactant conversions in DR and RWGS are strongly influenced by temperature and feed …
Assessment Of Nanocomposites Vs. Amorphous Solid Dispersions For Dissolution Enhancement Of Bcs Class Ii Drugs, Meng Li
Dissertations
Nanoparticle-based formulations (nanocomposites) and amorphous solid dispersions, shortly ASDs, are two major pharmaceutical formulation platforms used for the bioavailability enhancement of poorly water-soluble drugs. While they both have several advantages-disadvantages, a scientific comparative assessment of their drug release performance and dissolution mechanisms at different drug doses is not available. With the goal of addressing this issue, the dissertation aims to achieve three major objectives: (1) develop a processing-formulation understanding of wet media milling process for fast-efficient production of drug nanoparticles in stable nanosuspension form, (2) elucidate the impact of various classes dispersants on drug release rate and mechanisms during the …

Thermochemistry Of Fluorinated Aldehydes And Corresponding Radicals;Thermochemistry And Kinetics Of Diethyl Ether And Ethyl Oxirane Relative To Reactions Under Atmospheric And Combustion Conditions, Douglas Lee Purnell Jr.
Dissertations
Fundamental thermochemical properties including enthalpies (ΔH°f 298), entropies (S°(T)), heat capacities (Cp(T)), and bond dissociation energies (BDEs) for several common and complex hydrocarbon fuel species are determined using computational chemical methods. ΔH°f 298 values are calculated using isodesmic reactions with the CBS-APNO, CBS-4M, CBS-QB3, G2, G3, G4, Weizmann-1 (W1U) and M06-2X, ωB97X, B3-LYP with basis set 6-31G+ (d,p) and 6-31G++(d,p) calculation methods. Structures, moments of inertia, vibrational frequencies, and internal rotor potentials are calculated for contributions to entropies and heat capacities. Kinetic rate parameters are calculated for hydrogen abstraction and …
Characterization Of Microporous Ectfe Membranes Exposed To Different Liquid Media And ?-Radiation And Nanoparticle Microfiltration Through Such Membranes, Na Yao
Dissertations
Microporous polymeric membranes are used in a variety of applications for separations, purification as well as barrier function. A major application is for microfiltration (MF). Changes in the properties of MF membranes exposed to acids, bases and organic solvents are of interest in semiconductor processing as well as in membrane contactor applications. Microfiltration membranes used for sterilization in beverage, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are sterilized by gamma radiation among others. Irradiation-induced degradation in membrane properties should be known. A variety of fluoropolymer-based microporous membranes are available with varying properties. Ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) membranes are a new addition and are of …
Ecological Succession On Neotropical Landslides: Comparing Successional Patterns Of Four Different Aged Landslides In The Cerro Candelaria Reserve, Nace Keifer
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Abstract In an area that is vulnerable to frequent landslides due to steep montane slopes and heavy rain falls it is important to understand how the ecosystem regenerates after it has been disturbed. This study examined ecological succession patterns by comparing the vegetation on four different aged landslides and the unharmed forest within the Cerro Candelaria Reserve, located in a cloud forest ecosystem in central Ecuador. One meter soil profiles and 5x5 meter vegetation quadrats were used to observe and characterize the habitats on the four individual landslides and unharmed forest. At each location, soil color, texture, and structure were …

Water is an essential resource for all life. Water sustains ecological processes that are important to the survival of fish, vegetation, wetlands, and birds. It contributes to humans by providing drinking water, irrigation, and also is an inspiration for recreational, cultural, and spiritual practices. Anthropogenic activities affect water quality in various ways, and a significant portion of the human population is currently experiencing water stress. The quality of water, as well as its social and economic value, share a positive relationship. Therefore, as water quality becomes degraded by pollution, the environmental, social, and economic value also decrease. The recognition of …

Clinician–investigators, also called physician–scientists, offer critical knowledge and perspectives that benefit research on basic science mechanisms, improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, population and outcomes medicine, health policy, and health services, yet few clinically trained health professionals pursue a research career. Sustaining this workforce requires attention to the unique challenges faced by investigators who must achieve clinical and research competence during training and their careers. These challenges include the duration of required clinical training, limited or discontinuous research opportunities, high levels of educational debt, balancing the dual obligations and rewards of clinical care and research, competition for research funding, and the …

Dietary Transfer Of Heavy Metals In Manatees, E. M. Smith, Dimitri Giarikos, A. Daniels, Amy Hirons
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
In recent decades, manatees and dugongs globally have exhibited potentially detrimental levels of a variety of heavy metals in their body tissues. The threatened Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), which is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), has shown corresponding high levels of heavy metals in their blood, skin, liver, and kidneys. As obligate herbivores, these animals rely heavily upon seagrasses as a major component of their diet. Globally, seagrasses at low latitudes have high levels of heavy metals in their tissues. Detrimental levels of heavy metals in Sirenians have not been established …
