Successes And Challenges In Growing And Sustaining An Undergraduate Digital Scholarship Program, R.C. Miessler
All Musselman Library Staff Works
In July of 2017, Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library completed the second iteration of the Digital Scholarship Summer Fellowship, a library-led, student-focused program that introduces students to digital scholarship tools and methodology. Librarian R.C. Miessler discusses the successes and challenges of supporting a growing digital scholarship program, with a focus on its future sustainability and a vision of its expansion into a campus-wide initiative.

Removing Dams, Constructing Science: Coproduction Of Undammed Riverscapes By Politics, Finance, Environment, Society And Technology, Zbigniew J. Grabowski, Ashlie Denton, Mary Ann Rozance, Marissa Matsler, Sarah Kidd
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Dam removal in the United States has continued to increase in pace and scope, transitioning from a dam-safety engineering practice to an integral component of many large-scale river restoration programmes. At the same time, knowledge around dam removals remains fragmented by disciplinary silos and a lack of knowledge transfer between communities of practice around dam removal and academia. Here we argue that dam removal science, as a study of large restoration-oriented infrastructure interventions, requires the construction of an interdisciplinary framework to integrate knowledge relevant to decision-making on dam removal. Drawing upon infrastructure studies, relational theories of coproduction of knowledge and …

Open Educational Resources: A Primer And Review Of Implementation At One Institution, Judy O. Grissett
Open Educational Resources: A Primer And Review Of Implementation At One Institution, Judy O. Grissett
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
Open educational resources (OER), which are materials that can be adopted or adapted from their original source and shared with others for free (UNESCO, 2017), are becoming increasingly popular among faculty, as research has shown they are often as effective on student learning and engagement as copyright-restricted textbooks (Hilton, 2016). They also save students money on textbook cost (Bliss, Robinson, Hilton, & Wiley, 2013b).
The purpose of this presentation is several-fold. First, I will discuss the use of OER by faculty at one USG institution. Several courses have been transformed at the institution, including ones in biology, education, music, psychology, …
Writing In The Language Of Reality: Interwar Experiments In Language, Robin Fuller
Writing In The Language Of Reality: Interwar Experiments In Language, Robin Fuller
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
This paper examines projects in universal communication from the interwar period, including Charles Kay Ogden’s Basic English, Otto Neurath’s Isotype, and László Moholy-Nagy’s typo-photo. The projects under discussion — experiments in language reform, graphic design and photography — were all born from a dissatisfaction with the imprecise, arbitrary and historically-contingent nature of established languages and semiotic systems. A non-arbitrary mode of communication was sought, one that represented reality directly without translation through a cultural code.
A Revolt Of The Masses: Culture And Modernity In Early 20th Century Spain: From Bullfights To Football Games, Katrine Helene Andersen
A Revolt Of The Masses: Culture And Modernity In Early 20th Century Spain: From Bullfights To Football Games, Katrine Helene Andersen
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
This article discusses the consolidation of mass culture in early 20th century Spain and analyses the discrepancy between the intellectual debate about Spanish culture and public behaviour. Bullfighting has throughout history been a much debated theme amongst intellectuals, and it has been banned by kings and the Church on several occasions. Nevertheless, there has always been an audience. In early 20th century, football entered the scene of popular culture in Spain and gained very quickly in popularity. The article discusses the presence of the two and analyses the contribution of bullfighting and football to the process of modernisation …
The Way We Read Now: Middlebrow Fiction In Twenty-First Century Europe, Diana Holmes
The Way We Read Now: Middlebrow Fiction In Twenty-First Century Europe, Diana Holmes
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
The allocation of a novel to the category ‘middlebrow’ is partly a matter of marketing and shifting attitudes to literary value, but this article argues that it also designates certain stylistic and narrative qualities that are little esteemed by ‘serious’ critics, but appeal consistently to a wider reading public. The article focuses on one sub-category of contemporary middlebrow fiction, feminine crime, through a comparative analysis of novels by Fred Vargas (French) and Kate Atkinson (British). The argument addresses the relationship between popular and middlebrow within the genre of crime writing, and the ways in which a female perspective inflects generic …

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
This second issue of CALL Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language makes available a group of papers selected from the considerably larger body of work that was presented at The Cultures of Popular Culture conference, promoted by the Royal Irish Academy’s Committee for Modern Languages, Literary and Cultural Studies and held at Queen’s University Belfast on 13 and 14 December, 2013. The conference was the first one entirely devoted by the RIA to a subject that has become increasingly central in the field of Modern Languages as well in numerous other disciplines. If compared to the countless academic …

Persistence To Graduation: Is It The Money, High School Preparation, Or First Semester College Matriculation?, Mary E. Anderson, Noran L. Moffett
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
This research study examined the relationship between persistence to graduation within six years and selected variables including financial aid awarded, high school GPA, ACT composite scores, SAT combined scores, and first-year first-semester GPA. It is well documented in research literature that high school preparation, college entrance examinations, and freshman year academic performance play a significant role in degree completion; however, studies on the impact of financial aid have not been as abundant. The researchers developed the College Persistence – Financial Aid Coding Technique System (CP-FACTS) to explore the influences of finances on degree attainment.
In this study, a documentary research …

Gender Identity Work: Oppression And Agency As Described In Lifespan Narratives Of Transgender And Other Gender Non-Conforming Identified People In The U. S., Kathryn O'Brien
Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to critically examine the gender identity work of white transgender and other gender non-conforming identified (TgNCi) people through their stories and the meanings they attach to important artifacts across the lifespan. A single question directed the investigation: How do TgNCi individuals describe gender identity work through lifespan narratives? Thirteen volunteers participated in two interviews: the first, a narration of their life stories and in the second, descriptions of the significance of personal artifacts selected by the participants and photographed by the investigator. Participants’ ages ranged from 22 to 66, according to four pre-determined age …
