Baetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) Of Wisconsin, Edward A. Bergman, William L. Hilsenhoff
Baetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) Of Wisconsin, Edward A. Bergman, William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Data on life histories and environmental requirements for species in many mayfly genera remains sketchy at best This is certainly true of Baetis, which is one of the most common components of Wisconsin's lotic fauna. Most Wisconsin streams that are not grossly pobted contain one or more species of the minnow-like nymphs, which are usually found clinging to surfaces of rocks or aquatic plants. Biological studies of Baetis in North America have been neglected primarily because of their enigmatic taxonomy. Even keys of Needham et al. (1935) and Burks (1953), which are considered standard referenas, are either incomplete or difficult …

Incidence And Location Of Eastern Pineshoot Borer Damage In Some Scotch Pine Christmas Tree Plantations In Michigan (Lepidoptera: Olethreutidae), M. Mckeague, G. Simmons
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A survey of Christmas tree farms in Michigan revealed that 26% of the Scotch pine Christmas trees have one or more shoots injured by the eastern pineshoot borer, Eucosma gloriola Heinrich. Most attacks occurred on lateral branches in the top half of the tree. Only 2% of the observed trees had pineshoot borer injury on the terminal leader. Control except for normal shearing, was not recommended for most plantations.

Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Influence Of Seeding Rate Of Oats On Populations, J. A. Webster, D. H. Smith, S. H. Gage
The Great Lakes Entomologist
In field and greenhouse studies, more cereal leaf beetle [Oulema melanopus (Lin- naeus)] eggs and larvae were found per unit area on spring oats, Avena sativa L., planted either at intermediate (54 kg/ha) or high (136 kg/ha) seeding rates, than when planted at a lower seeding rate (14 kg/ha). However, there were fewer eggs and larvae per stem in plantings of the high or intermediate rates than in those of the lower rate. Oats should not be planted at less than the recommended rates in beetle-infested areas.

Phenotypic Expression In The Paper Wasp Polistes Fuscatus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), Bonnie K. Maclean, Leland Chandler, David B. Maclean
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Quantification of color/color pattern in Polistes fuscatus (Fabricius) revealed that these attributes were the interaction of two antagonistic color sequences; their expression being highly correlated with nest microclimate (relative humidity-temperature). Color/ color pattern expressions were modified under experimental conditions to produce forms having natural counterparts in the field.
Principal coordinates analyses and trend surface analyses using specimens collected throughout the United States indicated three color pattern trends, representing three distinct geographic areas, and, when objectively defined, without intergradation between and/or among areas. It was concluded that fuscatus should not be considered a widespread, polytypic species; rather, as three discrete species: …

A Modified Method For Reading Midges (Diptera: Chironomidae), Peter G. Meier, Henry C. Torres
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A small scale rearing chamber that provides a continuous source of different life stages of Glyptotendipes barbipes Staeger for bioassay studies was developed. A modified glass aquarium containing a substrate of shredded paper hand towels and artificial medium was employed. The amount of protein fed to the larvae can be used to trigger peak emergence, oviposition, and the rate of maturation. Fifty-three egg masses were sampled and 68% were fertile. Ninety-five percent of these hatched and 85% emerged as adults.

The Great Lakes Entomologist
Mating flights of the mayfly Ephoron album (Say) were observed on the Sturgeon River in Houghton County, Michigan, on five evenings between 16 and 22 August, 1977. Peak emergence occurred about 30 minutes befqre sunset on 19 August and the flight period lasted about two hours. Many more adult males than females were collected on three evenings, but on one evening females greatly outnumbered males collected.

Description Of The Nymph Of Centroptilum Walshi (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae), With Biological Notes, Edward A. Bergman, William L. Hilsenhoff
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The nymph of Centroptilum walshi McDunnough is described. C. walshi appears to be bivoltine in Wisconsin, with emergences throughout June into early July and from late August to early November. Mature nymphs were smallest when stream temperatures were the warmest. The nymphs were closely associated with Ranunculus sp., and numbers increased when the Ranunculus beds became more dense.

Persistent Organic Pollutants And Mortality In The United States, Nhanes 1999-2011., Kristiann Fry, Melinda C Power
Epidemiology Faculty Publications
Background
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are environmentally and biologically persistent chemicals that include polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine (OC) pesticides. Currently, data on the associations between exposure to POPs and the risk of mortality in the U.S. population is limited.
Our objective was to determine if higher exposure to POPs is associated with greater risk of all-cause, cancer, heart/cerebrovascular disease, or other-cause mortality.
Methods
Analyses included participants aged 60 years and older from the 1999–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). We included 483 participants for analyses of PBDEs, 1043 …
Nozick’S Libertarian Critique Of Regan, Josh Milburn
Nozick’S Libertarian Critique Of Regan, Josh Milburn
Between the Species
Robert Nozick’s oft-quoted review of Tom Regan’s The Case for Animal Rights levels a range of challenges to Regan’s philosophy. Many commentators have focussed on Nozick’s putative defence of speciesism, but this has led to them overlooking other aspects of the critique. In this paper, I draw attention to two. First is Nozick’s criticism of Regan’s political theory, which is best understood relative to Nozick’s libertarianism. Nozick’s challenge invites the possibility of a libertarian account of animal rights – which is not as oxymoronic as it may first sound. Second is Nozick’s criticism of Regan’s axiological theory, which is best …

Myasthaenia Gravis : Clinical Management Issues Before, During And After Pregnancy, Ali Hassan, Zakia M. Yasawy
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Myasthaenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder which is twice as common among women, often presenting in the second and third decades of life. Typically, the first trimester of pregnancy and first month postpartum are considered high-risk periods for MG exacerbations. During pregnancy, treatment for MG is usually individualised, thus improving its management. Plasma exchange and immunoglobulin therapies can be safely used to treat severe manifestations of the disease or myasthaenic crises. However, thymectomies are not recommended because of the delayed beneficial effects and possible risks associated with the surgery. Assisted vaginal delivery—either vacuum-assisted or with forceps—may be required …

Controversies In Odontogenic Tumours : Review, Pooja Siwach, Tabita Joy, Jagdish Thakur, Arush
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Odontogenic tumours are lesions that occur solely within the oral cavity and are so named because of their origin from the odontogenic (i.e. tooth-forming) apparatus. Odontogenic tumours comprise a variety of lesions ranging from non-neoplastic tissue proliferations to benign or malignant neoplasms. However, controversies exist regarding the pathogenesis, categorisation and clinical and histological variations of these tumours. The recent 2017 World Health Organization classification of odontogenic tumours included new entities such as primordial odontogenic tumours, sclerosing odontogenic carcinomas and odontogenic carcinosarcomas, while eliminating several previously included entities like keratocystic odontogenic tumours and calcifying cystic odonogenic tumours. The aim of the …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Organophosphate (OP) pesticides inhibit both red blood cell (RBC) and plasma cholinesterases (ChEs). Oximes, especially pralidoxime (2-PAM), are widely used as antidotes to treat OP poisoning. In addition, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is sometimes used as an adjuvant antidote. The current study aimed to assess the feasibility of using NAC as a single therapeutic agent for OP poisoning in comparison to in vitro 2-PAM. Methods:This study was carried out at the Razi Drug Research Center of Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, between April and September 2014. A total of 22 healthy human subjects were recruited and 8 mL citrated …

Plants have complex and adaptive innate immune responses against pathogen infections. Stomata are key entry points for many plant pathogens. Both pathogens and plants regulate stomatal aperture for pathogen entry and defense, respectively. Not all plant proteins involved in stomatal aperture regulation have been identified. Here, we report GENERAL CONTROL NONREPRESSIBLE4 (GCN4), an AAA+-ATPase family protein, as one of the key proteins regulating stomatal aperture during biotic and abiotic stress. Silencing of GCN4 in Nicotiana benthamiana and Arabidopsis thaliana compromises host and nonhost disease resistance due to open stomata during pathogen infection. AtGCN4 overexpression plants have reduced H+-ATPase activity, stomata …

From Grade Schooler To Great Star: Childhood Development And The “Golden Age” In The World Of Japanese Soccer, Elise M. Edwards
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
This chapter, by Elise Edwards, explores how, in its quest for success in the men’s FIFA World Cup, the Japan Football Association encourages parents to enroll preschoolers in its kids’ program to increase the number of children playing soccer and the quality of their training, emphasizes the importance of physical activity and play for children, and promotes the notion of a golden age between the ages of nine and twelve when the opportunity for physical development is said to peak. This popularizes a vision of a segmented childhood determined by age grades and developmental stages underpinned by a fear that …

© 2017 The Author(s). Formation of beige adipocytes within white adipose tissue enhances energy expenditure, which is a promising strategy to reduce obesity and prevent metabolic symptoms. Vitamin A and its bioactive metabolite, retinoic acid (RA), have regulatory roles in lipid metabolism. Here we report that RA induces white adipose tissue browning via activating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling. RA triggered angiogenesis and elicited de novo generation of platelet-derived growth factor receptor α positive (PDGFRα +) adipose precursor cells via VEGFA/VEGFR2 signaling. In addition, RA promoted beige/brown adipocyte formation from capillary networks in vitro. Using PDGFRα tracking mice, we …

Hyalinizing Trabecular Tumor Of The Thyroid Gland And Its Significant Diagnostic Issue., Dustin J Jones, Christopher R Kieliszak, Sanjay S Patel, Christopher R Selinsky
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
BACKGROUND: Hyalinizing trabecular tumors (HTT) are rare follicular cell-derived tumors of the thyroid gland that are infrequently reported in otolaryngology literature. We present here an interesting case of HTT which provides the basis for review of this entity's clinical characteristics, criteria useful in making the diagnosis, and any currently available therapeutic modalities.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old Caucasian female underwent a CT scan of her chest and was incidentally found to have a nodule within the right thyroid lobe. Gross examination of the excised thyroid lobe revealed a circumscribed and encapsulated lesion (tan / gritty in texture), confined to the gland. …

Scaling aquatic ecosystem processes like nutrient removal is critical for assessing the importance of streams and rivers to watershed nutrient export. We used pulse NH4+ enrichment experiments and measured net NH4+ uptake in 7 streams throughout a mountainous tropical river network in Puerto Rico to assess spatial variability in NH4+ uptake and to infer the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that most influence its variation. Across 14 experiments, NH4+ uptake velocity (vf) ranged from 0.3 to 8.5 (mean = 2.7) mm/min and was positively related to algal biomass standing stock, measured as chlorophyll a. On average, 49% of experimentally added …

Communicating Consent: An Investigation Of Predictors Of College Student Sexual Consent Communication, Erin L. Link
Theses and Dissertations
Often, sexual consent is only discussed and explored in the context of sexual assault. While consent is often the deciding factor to determine if a crime occurred, consent is also a vital part of an equally enjoyable sexual encounter. The present study examines a variety of variables effects on consent attitudes, norms, and communication behaviors to attempt to identify predictors of college student consent communication. Findings and recommendations are discussed that highlight the necessity of viewing consent as a communicative act.
