Biological Characteristics That Make The Lesser Peachtree Borer (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) A Pest On Peach Trees, R. H. Meyer
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The lesser peachtree borer, Synanthedon pictipes, is a native insect with well distributed hosts near peach orchards, which has high mobility between sylvatic and domestic hosts. It is able to take advantage of the susceptibility of the peach tree to periodic freeze injury and disease cankers. The moth stage is present through most of the growing season and effectively conceals the eggs singly at the most favorable sites for larval success.

Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) (= Xyleborus germanus) is an ambrosia beetle that is found in Japan, Korea, the KurU Islands, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, central Europe, and the Cnited States (Nobuchi 1981). It attacks apparently healthy plants and those that are dying or recently dead (Weber 1982). Kaneko (1967) reported X. germanus to be a serious pest on tea (Thea sp.) plants in Japan, and Heidenreich (1%0) reported it on oak (Quercus sp.) trees in Gennany. This beetle seems to be increasing in economic importance on black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) and other hardwood species in the U.S. …

Hyadaphis tataricae (Aizenberg). an aphid known from eastern Europe, is rapidly becoming a pest on ornamental honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.) throughout the north-central states.
The source of the infestation is not known but it could have been introduced from eastern Canada where it has been present since 1976 (Boisvert et aI. 1981), or by separate introduction from eastern Europe. The first observations in the United States were made in the north-eastern corner of Illinois (Lake County) in 1979 (Voegtlin 1981). Observations of damage levels in that area support the hypothesis that its introduction to the north-central states originated there …

Nearly all entomologists studying terrestrial insects in the Lake States region find it necessary to recognize and attempt to understand the woody plant communities in which they live. My own great interest in trees was an obvious corollary of my work with forest insects and began with a copy of Michigan Trees by Charles Otis.

A Directory Of Policies On Arthropod Collecting On Public Lands, Gary A. Dunn
The Great Lakes Entomologist
There are many local, state, and federal agencies with responsibilities for managing public lands. The availability of these lands for entomological research and collecting is determined in great part by the specific governmental charges for the management and use of the area; for example: preservation, recreation, or multiple-use resource management.

The ubiquity and refractory nature of certain organic compounds, such as chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's), results in their accumulation in aquatic sediments (Holdrinet et al. 1978, Peck et al. 1980, Wang et al. 1979). Their continuous release from this reservoir through physico-chemical and biogenic processes to the overlying water column results in the accumulation of xenobiotic compounds in the food chain.

It has been shown that wood infected with the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum (Pers. ex Fr.) Murr. is'more attractive to termites than sound wood. For several years, small blocks of infected wood have been used as bait to sample soil sites for the presence of termites. The method described here for bait block production is more suitable than the ASTM method for large-scale work.

The Crossroads Of A Legal Fiction And The Reality Of Families, Andrew L. Weinstein
The Crossroads Of A Legal Fiction And The Reality Of Families, Andrew L. Weinstein
Maine Law Review
In Adoption of M.A., the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, held that an unmarried, same-sex couple could file a joint petition for adoption of two foster children in their care. This recent decision is only a fraction of a story that originated a long time ago when same-sex couples began raising children. This Comment begins by examining the role of the state courts and the United States Supreme Court in their exposition of family law relating to adoption by same-sex couples. The United States Supreme Court has periodically weighed in on family law and parenting in …

Credit Cards, Attorney's Fees, And The Putative Debtor: A Pyrrhic Victory? Putative Debtors May Win The Battle But Nevertheless Lose The War, Jennifer M. Smith
Maine Law Review
For decades, scholars have written about credit cards and attorney’s fees, but rarely together. This Article addresses the current financial crises of Americans, the credit card industry (including the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act) and attorney’s fees—perhaps a unique combination. It is based upon an actual case that left the putative debtor in a worse financial crisis than before the lawsuit was filed. This Article addresses the current credit card industry and its detrimental impact on society, and it discusses the history and purpose of attorney’s fees, as well as the pitfalls in attorney’s fee legislation. It analyzes …

A Century Of French International Law Scholarship, Emmanuelle Jouannet
Maine Law Review
In this study of contemporary French scholarship in the field of international law, I aimed to reveal its reality at the dawn of the 21st century, but I quickly discovered that it is difficult to understand the current trends in this area of scholarship without first placing French international legal thought in the broader context of the evolution of international law itself. It seems that the increased stature of international law and its considerable expansion since 1945 are both accepted and problematic. This evolution is not problematic in and of itself; the problem lies in the increased interest it arouses …

In 2001, Ben Erskine, a man who claimed to be the son of renowned guru Paramahansa Yogananda, planned to ask a Los Angeles judge to order that the guru's body be exhumed for DNA testing to determine Erskine's paternity. Erskine's allegations threatened both Yogananda's reputation and the fortune of his estate, which belonged to his organization the Self Realization Fellowship. In 2002, seven years after the allegations arose, conclusive tests comparing Erskine's DNA and that of Yogananda's surviving male relatives in India resolved the controversy and vindicated the guru, thus putting to rest the looming possibility of exhuming his body …

Shaping State Courts For The New Century: What Chief Judges Can Do, Judith S. Kaye
Maine Law Review
Judge Coffin is an inspiration on so many levels for all of us. But just at this very moment in my own life, I feel that he is speaking personally and directly to me. I am in my own transitioning period, as-in just fifty-five days-my judicial service comes to an end after over twenty-five years, because our state constitution provides for mandatory age retirement. I particularly liked a quotation Judge Coffin included in his article: "Our lives are two/ If we can relish our past life anew." So, under the banner of Law and Public Service, I thought I would …

Honey, You're No June Cleaver: The Power Of "Dropping Pop" To Persuade, Victoria S. Salzmann
Maine Law Review
Imagine a contentious child-custody hearing in which the husband is testifying about his wife's behavior. If he were to state “she is no June Cleaver,” that testimony would have an immediate impact upon those present. Most people would understand that the husband was making a reference to Mrs. Ward Cleaver, the pearl-clad mother figure from the popular 1950s television show Leave It to Beaver. However, the reference does more than simply call to mind 1950s television. It is a vivid popular-culture allusion that immediately taps into the psyche of anyone familiar with the show. It tells the listener that the …

Mālama Nā Makua I Nā Keiki Me Ka Hānō: Native Hawaiian Parents Caring For Their Children With Asthma, May K. Kealoha, Merle Kataoka-Yahiro
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Native Hawaiian children have the highest prevalence rate of asthma among all ethnicities in the State of Hawai‘i. Literature is limited regarding native Hawaiian parents’ perception and experience caring for their children with asthma. The purpose of this study is to explore contemporary native Hawaiian parents’ perspective and experience of caring for their children with asthma in the context of uncertainty. We applied a descriptive qualitative approach by means of directed content analysis using focus groups. Directed content analysis applied Mishel’s Uncertainty in Illness Theory to guide data collection, organization, and analysis. We found that parents’ personal stories about their …

Role Of C-Kit In Atherosclerosis: A Mechanistic Study, Lei Song
Open Access Dissertations
Rationale: c-Kit, as a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), is present in multiple cell types including vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). However, so far, limited progress has been made to understand how c-Kit mediates SMC biology, and whether the presence of this receptor is critical for vascular pathogenesis such as atherosclerosis. Objectives: In this dissertation, I investigated the roles of c-Kit in atherosclerosis and underlying mechanisms. Methods: c-Kit distribution was determined in both murine and human aortae using a combination of KitBac-eGFP reporter mice, immunofluorescence (IF), and Western blot. c-Kit deficiency studies were performed in c-Kit mutant (KitW/W-v) mice on an …
