Ecosystem Drought Response Timescales From Thermal Emission Versus Shortwave Remote Sensing, Erika Andujar, Nir Krakauer, Chuixiang Yi, Felix Kogan
Publications and Research
Remote sensing is used for monitoring the impacts of meteorological drought on ecosystems, but few large-scale comparisons of the response timescale to drought of different vegetation remote sensing products are available. We correlated vegetation health products derived frompolar-orbiting radiometer observations with a meteorological drought indicator available at different aggregation timescales, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), to evaluate responses averaged globally and over latitude and biome. The remote sensing products are Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), which uses normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to identify plant stress, Temperature Condition Index (TCI), based on thermal emission as a measure of surface temperature, and …

Intelligibility And Normativity In The Study Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan
Intelligibility And Normativity In The Study Of Religion, Bharat Ranganathan

In his essay “The Devil in Mr. Jones,” J. Z. Smith issues a call. If religionists do not, he writes, “persist in the quest for intelligibility, there can be no human sciences, let alone, any place for the study of religion within them.” How should Smith’s call be construed? In other words, what constitutes the “quest for intelligibility”? And what (if anything) differentiates the religionist’s quest for intelligibility from that of other humanistic scholars? Taking as my starting point Smith’s call, I will mount a constructive proposal. On my proposal, religionists should conceive their task as twofold. First, religionists should …

Modifiable And Non-Modifiable Factors Related To The Macular Pigment Optical Density (Mpod) In A Population Of College-Aged Adults, Genesis Gisselle Guerra Gaitan
LSU Master's Theses
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness among the elderly worldwide. Retinal problems, specifically in the macula, hold potential for development of AMD. Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) gives a measure of the thickness of the macula and therefore health of the macula. Some of the populations at risk for development of AMD include being white, female, and having light eye color. Factors related to the development of the disease have been divided into modifiable and non-modifiable; non-modifiable include a genetic predisposition. Control of modifiable factors, including body mass index (BMI) and diet [dietary intake …

Cholesterol homeostasis is maintained through concerted action of the SREBPs and LXRs. Here, we report that RNF145, a previously uncharacterized ER membrane ubiquitin ligase, participates in crosstalk between these critical signaling pathways. RNF145 expression is induced in response to LXR activation and high-cholesterol diet feeding. Transduction of RNF145 into mouse liver inhibits the expression of genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis and reduces plasma cholesterol levels. Conversely, acute suppression of RNF145 via shRNA-mediated knockdown, or chronic inactivation of RNF145 by genetic deletion, potentiates the expression of cholesterol biosynthetic genes and increases cholesterol levels both in liver and plasma. Mechanistic studies show …

Optimization Of Overhead Irrigation In Relation To Irrigation Water Use Efficiency In The Louisiana Nursery Industry, Mark A. Wilson
LSU Master's Theses
Irrigation efficiency is an essential component of nursery production in the United States. To increase productivity of Louisiana growers, a series of studies were conducted to evaluate current nursery water practices. The objectives were to determine current irrigation practices; evaluate actual water usage; and compare nursery media for water utilization. A mailed survey determined that the majority of growers used can yard production (63%), overhead irrigation (79%), had no irrigation manager (82%) and did not collect/reuse water(61%); 50% do not test/calibrate their irrigation system. Based on this information, five nurseries using overhead irrigation were selected to determine water application and …

Isolation, Detection, And Prevention Of Foodborne Bacteria In Irrigation Water And Dairy Food, Mohammed Saleemallah Alhejaili
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foodborne microorganisms can be beneficial to humans or cause disease. Salmonella is one of the most causative foodborne disease outbreaks in the U.S.A. Salmonella has been detected in surface water used in irrigation, and can survive for weeks to years in water. The purpose of the study was to detect low levels of Salmonella spp. by comparing surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) filtration and Activated Carbon (AC) filtration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 1200. Also, to determine the generic E.coli counts and if there was a direct correlation of Salmonella to generic E. coli in irrigation water. The EPA …

Key message
Mature Caragana stenophylla shrubs facilitated intraspecific sapling establishment by two mechanisms: microhabitat amelioration and protection against herbivory. Facilitation was mediated by climate, grazing, and sapling age.
Context
Pre-existing shrubs could facilitate sapling establishment of woody plants; however, how these facilitation vary across abiotic and biotic stress gradients and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
Aims
The aim of this study is understanding the facilitation of shrub on sapling establishment and how the two underlying mechanisms, microhabitat amelioration and protection against herbivory, vary across climatic aridity gradients, grazing gradients, and sapling age.
Methods
We conducted field sowing experiments to examine …

Precipitation is one of the important variables in hydrological cycle and has important application in both irrigated and rainfed agricultural crop production. Better understanding of spatio-temporal variability of precipitation across Togo is important and useful for water users and most agricultural activities. Thus, the objective this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal variation in monthly and annual precipitation across Togo for the period of 1961-2001. Monthly precipitation data was provided by the national direction of meteorology. The performed analysis revealed a decline in annual total precipitation across almost all agro-ecological zones in Togo with the Maritime Region revealed …

Extra-pair paternity (EPP), where offspring are sired by a male other than the social male, varies enormously both within and among species. Trying to explain this variation has proved difficult because the majority of the interspecific variation is phylogenetically based. Ideally, variation in EPP should be investigated in closely related species, but clades with sufficient variation are rare. We present a comprehensive multifactorial test to explain variation in EPP among individuals in 20 populations of nine species over 89 years from a single bird family (Maluridae). Females had higher EPP in the presence of more helpers, more neighbors or …

Molecular oscillators are important cellular regulators of, for example, circadian clocks, oscillations of immune regulators, and short-period (ultradian) rhythms during embryonic development. The Notch signaling factor HES1 (hairy and enhancer of split 1) is a well-known repressor of proneural genes, and HES1 ultradian oscillation is essential for keeping cells in an efficiently proliferating progenitor state. HES1 oscillation is driven by both transcriptional self-repression and ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis. However, the E3 ubiquitin ligase targeting HES1 for proteolysis remains unclear. Based on siRNA-mediated gene silencing screening, co-immunoprecipitation, and ubiquitination assays, we discovered that the E3 ubiquitin ligase SCFFBXL14 complex regulates HES1 ubiquitination and …

Multi-Class Computational Evolution: Development, Benchmark Comparison, And Application To Rna-Seq Biomarker Discovery, Nathaniel Mark Crabtree
Theses and Dissertations
A computational evolution system (CES) is a knowledge-discovery engine that constructs and evolves classifiers with a small number of features to identify subtle, synergistic relationships among features and to discriminate groups in high-dimensional data analysis. CESs have previously been designed to only analyze binary datasets. In this work, the CES method has been expanded to accommodate multi-class data. The multi-class CES was compared to three common classification and feature selection methods: random forest, random k-nearest neighbor, and support vector machines. The four classifiers were evaluated on three real RNA sequencing datasets. Performance was evaluated via cross validation to assess classification …

In this study a new pH-responsive nanogel probe containing a complementary nonradiative resonance energy transfer (NRET) fluorophore pair is investigated and its ability to act as a versatile probe of network-related changes in three hydrogels demonstrated. Fluorescent sensing using NRET is a powerful method for studying relationships between Angstrom length-scale structure and macroscopic properties of soft matter. Unfortunately, inclusion of NRET fluorophores into such materials requires material-specific chemistry. Here, low concentrations of preformed nanogel probes were included into hydrogel hosts. Ratiometric photoluminescence (PL) data for the gels labeled with the nanogel probes enabled pH-triggered swelling and deswelling to be studied …

Real Boys Don't Do Language And Literacy--Or Do They?, Christen M. Pearson
MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL
Over the past several decades, there has been a decline in boys’ achievement, along with documentation of increasing struggles in language (both first and second) and literacy acquisition (Carr & Pauwels, 2006). To address this problem, gender differences have been looked at through the lens of socially and culturally constructed identity (Kindlon & Thompson, 2000; Pollack, 1998); however, emerging neurolinguistic research supports biological determinism, with evidence of strong biological (sex) differences in brain structure and function that impact language and learning (Bonomo, 2010; Gurian, 1996; Sax, 2005). This paper first provides an overview of current brain-based research on sex differences, …

Green Is Good: How Green Bonds Cultivated Into Wall Street’S Environmental Paradox, Luke Trompeter
Sustainable Development Law & Policy
When the European Investment Bank issued the first green bond in 2007, few imagined this debt instrument would attract mainstream investors. Designed to finance projects ranging from climate change prevention to clean transportation development, green bonds were geared for socially responsible investors concerned with our planet’s sustainability. However, by 2015, green bonds were issued by major corporations like Apple and municipalities like New York City at a record $40 billion. Major players on Wall Street have taken notice and look to cash in on the rapidly growing green bond market. With this new influx of investment and the bonds’ tax-exempt …

Never For-Gatt: What Recent Tbt Decisions Reveal About The Appellate Body’S Analysis Of Environmental Regulation Under The Wto Agreements, Ravi Soopramanien
Sustainable Development Law & Policy
Few environmentalists have positive things to say on the impact of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the environment. WTO legal obligations are frequently cited as the most significant impediment to a range of environmental initiatives, including notably meaningful international coordination to combat climate change, particularly through carbon tax initiatives, and imposition of electronic waste disposal export bans. In this vein, adverse findings of WTO dispute panels on environmental conservation measures tend to attract the ire of international civil society. The tensions between liberal trade and environmental protection can be traced back to the days of the General Agreement on …

Sun Glint Critical Angle Oil Detection, Shaojie Sun
Sun Glint Critical Angle Oil Detection, Shaojie Sun
C-IMAGE data
This dataset includes two MODIS L1B images and the generated sun glint reflectance (LGN) data after atmospheric correction. LGN was also modeled for the two images according to the sun/view geometry, oil and water fresnel reflection. This dataset introduced atmospheric correction and different oil fresnel reflection with water in the calculation of sun glint reflectance from MODIS imagery. By doing this, the calculated sun glint reflectance results are more accurate and the original concept of sun glint critical angle is refined.
