Inklings And Tentacled Things: Grasping At Kinship Through Video Games, Melissa Bianchi
Inklings And Tentacled Things: Grasping At Kinship Through Video Games, Melissa Bianchi
Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles
Connecting Haraway’s recent observations about “making kin” to video games, this essay examines how particular elements of the medium might cultivate nuanced considerations for multispecies relations. To fully grasp how video games broadly redefine relations between human and nonhuman animals, we must consider the role of game aesthetics and play mechanics in players’ experiences of becoming-with. These elements of games fundamentally shape players’ engagements with the medium and are inextricably linked to their storytelling and production. Moreover, game aesthetics and play mechanics (in conjunction with storytelling) demand that players take specific actions and inhabit distinct roles during play, enabling players …

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is the key transcription factor that controls animal development and various adaptive processes. The AHR's target genes are involved in biodegradation of endogenous and exogenous toxins, regulation of immune response, organogenesis, and neurogenesis. Ligand binding is important for the activation of the AHR signaling pathway. Invertebrate AHR homologs are activated by endogenous ligands whereas vertebrate AHR can be activated by both endogenous and exogenous ligands (xenobiotics). Several studies using mammalian cultured cells have demonstrated that transcription of the AHR target genes can be activated by exogenous AHR ligands, but little is known about the effects of …

The purpose of this research cruise was to discover and characterize, for the first time, the extent of mesophotic reefs along the entire coastline of Cuba, and to compare the health and connectivity (physical, genetic and ecological) among both mesophotic and previously well-characterized shallow reef systems in Cuba, the southeastern United States, and Gulf of Mexico (in particular, the FGBNMS and FKNMS). Moreover, the project will directly address a recommendation in the Report from MarCuba (2015) in which the U.S. and Cuban participants in this project stated their intention to initiate an international collaboration.

Bodies Of Water: Politics, Ethics, And Relationships Along New Mexico's Acequias, Elise Trott
Anthropology ETDs
Growing public attention to global economic and environmental instability and collapse have brought new urgency to a classic activity of anthropology: looking for alternative economic and environmental models in other ways of life. This dissertation is a case study of the complex and sometimes contradictory ways in which New Mexico’s acequias (communally-managed irrigation ditches) are produced, experienced, and contested as an alternative form of living, creating community, and relating ethically to the environment. Drawing on over six years of participant observation and in-depth interviews with Nuevomexicano (Spanish- and Mexican-descendant), indigenous, and non-indigenous acequia users and organizers in North-Central New Mexico …

Recent Works: Exploring Connections With Naturally Derived Materials Through The Context Of Art, Edmond Caputo
Theses
Recent Works is a body of art that arrived from my deep connection to the earth and nature. I was born and raised on a lake in upstate N.Y. and my childhood offered me a plethora of stimulation for my senses to receive and appreciate. It is a magical place to discover childhood, to experience as an adult, and one that remains my sanctum sanctorum. Growing up and bearing witness to a fluctuating and fragile ecosystem, where you can experience some of nature’s most triumphant moments and its transitional phases, has revealed itself in a way that has continuously informed …

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Agrobacterium fabrum induces tumor growth in susceptible plant species. The upregulation of virulence genes that occurs when the bacterium senses plant-derived compounds is enhanced by acidic pH and limiting inorganic phosphate. Nutrient starvation may also trigger the stringent response, and purine salvage is among the pathways expected to be favored under such conditions. We show here that phosphate limitation induces the stringent response, as evidenced by production of (p)ppGpp, and that the xdhCSML operon encoding the purine salvage enzyme xanthine dehydrogenase is upregulated ∼15-fold. The xdhCSML operon is under control of the TetR family transcription …

Encapsulation Of Inositol Hexakisphosphate To Facilitate Cellular Entry And Programmed Cell Death In Breast Cancer Cells, Ilham Hassoon Kadhim
Theses and Dissertations
There are more than 60 isoforms of InsPs generated by phosphorylation and de-phosphorylation of inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate (InsP3), a key cell-signaling molecule produced during G-protein-coupled receptor activation. Among InsPs, inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6), also known as phytic acid (IP6), is the most abundant InsPs present in most cells. It plays a critical role in cellular differentiation, cell proliferation and apoptosis involving the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Several lines of studies have indicated the inhibitory activity of InsP6 in human and animal cancer cells via the inhibition of PI3K/Akt pathway. Increasing cellular contents of InsP6 is likely to inhibit cell proliferation and …

Morphometric Analysis Of The Pig Proximal Femoral Epiphyseal Plate, Ronald Vincent Perrone Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In young growing vertebrates, the head of the femur is attached to the neck by a cartilaginous joint (femoral capital epiphyseal plate) comprised of growth cartilage with an interdigitating arrangement of undulations of various sizes called mammillary processes and a perichondrium. Occasionally the femoral head and the neck separate, a condition known as slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). It has been suggested that mammillary processes function to reduce the likelihood of such a slip (SCFE). After removing soft tissues from the proximal ends of eight mongrel pig femurs (nine days preterm to 30 months), the exposed growth plate surfaces on …

Urgency Of Boundary Maritime Management: Strategies To Prevent Conflicts, Josina Augustina Yvonne Wattimena
Indonesian Journal of International Law
The boundary of maritime between countries is a very important issue for coastal States as well as archipelagic countries such as Indonesia. Indonesia is adjacent to the sea with ten neighboring countries. Until now, Indonesia has not completely resolved the sea border issues with neighboring countries. This is due to the determination of the sea boundary is not easy, very closely with various considerations such as; Political, legal, strategic, historical, economic, environmental, geographical, geological and geomorphological. With the enactment of the 1982 Sea Law Convention as a new constitution for the regulation of the law of the sea, consequently Indonesian …

Exhibiting The Exotic At The Exhibition: Music And The Evolutionary Sociocultural Continuum At The 1904 St. Louis World’S Fair, David Kendall
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
The World’s Fair had long been a showcase of the progress and enlightenment of the modern Western nation, justified partly through the popularization of the new field of sociology that provided a linear evolutionary model of human sociocultural development. This model was available for illustration in St. Louis in 1904 largely due to the American possession of the Philippines. The new colony boasted many ethnic groups at various levels of social and cultural development, allowing the Fair organizers to display both the range of the evolutionary sociocultural continuum and the benefits of American colonialism in one large 47-acre “habitat.” Another …

Multi-Type Branching Processes Modeling Of Nosocomial Epidemics, Zeinab Mohamed, Tamer Oraby
Multi-Type Branching Processes Modeling Of Nosocomial Epidemics, Zeinab Mohamed, Tamer Oraby
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Nosocomial epidemics are infectious diseases which spread among different types of susceptible individuals in a health-care facility. To model this type of epidemics, we use a multi-type branching process with a multivariate negative binomial offspring distribution. In particular, we estimate the basic reproduction number R0 and study its relationship with the parameters of the offspring distribution. in case of a single-type epidemic, we investigate the effect of contact tracing on the estimates for R0.

The Transformation Process Of Fathers Of Children With Disabilities: An Exploratory Case Study, Holly F. Pedersen Ed.D., Dionne Spooner Ph.D
The Transformation Process Of Fathers Of Children With Disabilities: An Exploratory Case Study, Holly F. Pedersen Ed.D., Dionne Spooner Ph.D
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
While the vital role that fathers play in the development of their children is emphasized in recent literature, the majority of research relative to child development focuses on mothers. This imbalance is even more evident relative to research with parents of children with disabilities, leaving human service providers with few evidence based practices for appropriately addressing the needs of fathers raising children with disabilities. Research suggests that having a child with a disability, while challenging, can also have a significant positive impact on the family system and potentially offer a transformational experience for the parent. Guided by a theoretical model …
Exploring The Facilitators And Barriers Of Cognitive Engagement Among Ninth Grade Students In Accelerated Curricula, Kai Zhuang Shum
Exploring The Facilitators And Barriers Of Cognitive Engagement Among Ninth Grade Students In Accelerated Curricula, Kai Zhuang Shum
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive engagement has been linked to positive outcomes such as academic achievement (Eccles & Wang, 2012). However, students’ level of cognitive engagement tend to decline as students move into middle childhood and adolescence (Archambault, Janosz, Morizot, & Pagani, 2009; Wang & Eccles, 2012a; Wiley & Hodgen, 2012). In addition, two out of three high school students nationwide reported feeling bored at school because the academic tasks are not interesting or relevant (Yazzie-Mintz, 2006). In regard to this matter, researchers have examined factors that relate to cognitive engagement. Most of the existing research is quantitative in nature and only involves students …
Why Does It Take Two To Tango? Lifetime Fitness Consequences Of Parental Care In A Burying Beetle, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk
Why Does It Take Two To Tango? Lifetime Fitness Consequences Of Parental Care In A Burying Beetle, Ashlee N. Smith, J. Curtis Creighton, Mark C. Belk
Faculty Publications
In species that require parental care, each parent can either care for their offspring or leave them in the care of the other parent. For each parent this creates three possible parental care strategies: biparental care, uniparental (male or female) care, and uniparental desertion by either the male or female. The burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, typically exhibits biparental care of offspring, and thus provides a unique system that allows us to compare the fitness benefits of these parental care strategies in an unconfounded way. In this study, we assess the lifetime fitness of biparental care, uniparental care, and uniparental …
