Advances in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation for sickle cell disease have improved outcomes, but there is limited analysis of healthcare utilization in this setting. We hypothesized that, compared to late transplantation, early transplantation (at age <10 >years) improves outcomes and decreases healthcare utilization. We performed a retrospective study of children transplanted for sickle cell disease in the USA during 2000-2013 using two large databases. Univariate and Cox models were used to estimate associations of demographics, sickle cell disease severity, and transplant-related variables with mortality and chronic graft-versus-host disease, while Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, or linear trend tests were applied for the estimates of …10>

The Art Of Item Writing: Cross-Curricular Testing At Acer 1964-2014, Doug Mccurry, John Harding
ACER Research Monographs
This monograph is about the development of a distinctive style of cross-curricular testing that was developed at the Australian Council for Educational Research in the 1960s and 1970s, and is still in use in some testing programs presently. The impetus for this kind of test development was the decision of the Menzies government to award 10,000 scholarships each year for students to study at Years 11 and 12 through a test called The Commonwealth Secondary Scholarship Examination (CSSE). The testing program ran for 10 years, during which around one million candidates sat the test. This monograph attempts to demonstrate the …

Background—Post-extraction alveolar bone loss, mostly affecting the buccal plate, occurs despite regenerative procedures. To better understand possible determinants, this prospective case series assessed gingival blood perfusion and tissue molecular responses in relation to postextraction regenerative outcomes. Methods—Adults scheduled to receive bone grafting in maxillary, non-molar, single tooth extraction site were recruited. Clinical documentation included probing pocket depth (PD), keratinized tissue width (KT), tissue biotype (TB), plaque (P) and bleeding. Wound closure was clinically evaluated. Gingival blood perfusion was measured by Laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF). Wound fluid (WF) and gingival biopsies were analyzed for protein levels and gene expression, respectively, of …

Fitting Attitude Theory And The Normativity Of Jokes, Stephanie Patridge
Fitting Attitude Theory And The Normativity Of Jokes, Stephanie Patridge
Religion & Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
We defend a fitting-attitude (FA) theory of the funny against a set of potential objections. Ultimately, we endorse a version of FA theory that treats reasons for amusement as non-compelling, metaphysically non-conditional, and alterable by social features of the joke telling context. We find that this version of FA theory is well-suited to accommodate our ordinary practices of telling and being amused by jokes, and helpfully bears on the related faultless disagreement dispute.
The Future Perspective: Metabolomics In Laboratory Medicine For Inborn Errors Of Metabolism, Yana Sandlers
The Future Perspective: Metabolomics In Laboratory Medicine For Inborn Errors Of Metabolism, Yana Sandlers
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Metabolomics can be described as a simultaneous and comprehensive analysis of small molecules in a biological sample. Recent technological and bioinformatics advances have facilitated large-scale metabolomic studies in many areas, including inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). Despite significant improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of some IEMs, it is still challenging to understand how genetic variation affects disease progression and susceptibility. In addition, a search for new more personalized therapies and a growing demand for tools to monitor the long-term metabolic effects of existing therapies set the stage for metabolomics integration in preclinical and clinical studies. While targeted metabolomics approach …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper proposes a modified version of HPM method (DOHPM method), introducing in a systematic fashion, adjustment parameters in order to obtain analytical approximate solutions for nonlinear differential equations by using certain differential operators to turn a nonlinear differential equation into other of higher order. Comparison with exact solution shows that DOHPM method is highly efficient if the initial guess is chosen adequately

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The present paper is concerned with the investigation of disturbances in a homogeneous, isotropic and thermoelastic rotating medium withmagnetic fieldand a time-dependent heat source effect due to thermomechanical source. The formulation is without energy dissipation subjected to thermomechanical source. The normal mode analysisand eigenvalue approach techniques are applied to solve the problem. The expressions of displacement, mean value of normal stress, dilatation and temperature are obtained in the domain. Numerical simulated results are depicted graphically to show the effect of magnetic field and rotation on resulting quantities. The results indicate that the effect of magnetic field, rotation, frequency, wave number …

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The unsteady MHD Hartmann flow of an incompressible Casson nanofluid bounded by two stationery parallel horizontal plates in a porous medium is studied with heat and mass transfer. A non-Darcy model that obeys the Forchheimer extension is assumed for the characteristics of the porous medium. A uniform and constant pressure gradient is applied in the axial direction whereas a uniform suction and injection are applied in the direction normal to the plates. The two plates are kept at constant and different temperatures and the viscous and porous dissipations are not ignored in the energy equation. Moreover, the concentration of the …

K-Means-Clustering Based Evolutionary Algorithm For Multi-Objective Resource Allocation Problems, A. A. Mousa, M. A. El-Shorbagy, M. A. Farag
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The process of finding the optimal allocation of limited resources to a number of tasks for optimizing multiple objectives is called multi-objective resource allocation problem (MORAP). This paper presents K-means-clustering based on one of the evolutionary algorithm, genetic algorithm(GA), to solve MORAP. Using the K-means-clustering algorithm to divide the population to a specific number of sub-populations each of them with dynamic size. Therefore, different operators of GA (crossover&mutation) can be implemented to each subpopulation instead of applied the same GA operators to the all population. The aim of dynamic clustering is to preserve and introduce diversity into solutions, instead of …

Accuracy Enhancement Of The Epileptic Seizure Detection In Eeg Signals, B. Al-Bokhity, Dalia Nashat, T. M. Nazmy
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The detection of epileptic seizures becomes increasingly important because of the widespread of this disease all over the world. Early detection of epileptic seizures helps the patient to manage epilepsy. This paper introduces a detection system for epileptic seizures that implements a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) for denoising the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and Wavelet Transform (WT) for features extraction. Four EEG types (i.e Healthy people, Epileptic people during the seizure-free interval (Interictal), Epileptic people during seizure interval (Focal) and Epileptic people during seizure interval (Nonfocal)) are classified by using a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) classifier. The used dataset was …
On The Coupling Of The Thermostatted Kinetic Theory With The Information Theory, Carlo Bianca
On The Coupling Of The Thermostatted Kinetic Theory With The Information Theory, Carlo Bianca
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper deals with a further generalization of the continuous thermostatted kinetic theory for active particles. Specifically the interest focuses on the linking between the macroscopic data and the statistical evolution of the system. The connection between measurements and sources is established by defining an inverse problem based on the distribution vector function solution of the thermostatted kinetic framework. The inverse problem belongs to the class of ill-posed Volterra equations of the first kind considering that the number of sources can be greater of the number of measurements. The uniqueness of the solution is obtained by coupling the thermostatted kinetic …
Pixel Valued Adaptive Single Scale Center Surround Algorithm- An Innovative Approach For Illumination Removal, R. Alarmelu Mangai, N. Devarajan
Pixel Valued Adaptive Single Scale Center Surround Algorithm- An Innovative Approach For Illumination Removal, R. Alarmelu Mangai, N. Devarajan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper proposes an innovative approach for removing the non uniform illumination which is a major artifact in microscopic algal images. Center Surround Algorithm is used for correcting the non uniform illumination where the illumination and reflectance are separated but not completely removed. In this new algorithm the pixel values are replaced based on the geometric mean of the surrounding pixels and applying the Adaptive Single Scale Center Surround Algorithm to remove non uniform illumination. By determining inhomogenity and calculating zeros the illumination is completely removed. By iterating the convolution, the edges are also preserved. Many of the algal species …

Hybrid Taylor-Lucas Collocation Method For Numerical Solution Of High-Order Pantograph Type Delay Differential Equations With Variables Delays, Nurcan Bayku, Mehmet Sezer
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this study we consider a higher-order linear nonhomogenous pantograph type delay differential equation with variable coefficients and variables delays, and propose a new collocation method based on hybrid Taylor and Lucas polynomials. The presented method transforms the delay differential equation with the initial and boundary conditions to a system of linear algebraic equations with the unknown Lucas coefficients; by finding Lucas coefficients easily, Lucas polynomial solutions are obtained. Also an error estimation technique based on residual function is developed for our method and applied to exiting problems.

In Vivo Bioluminescence Imaging Of Nuclear Factor Kappab Activation: A Valuable Model For Studying Inflammatory And Oxidative Stress In Live Mice, Hong Zhu, Zhenquan Jia, Michael A. Trush, Y R. Li
Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of
The nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) is a redox-sensitive transcription factor that plays a critical role in inflammation among other biological functions. This ROS Protocol article describes an in vivo bioluminescence imaging assay for assessing NF-κB activation using the commercially available transgenic mice carrying NF-κB response element-luciferase reporter gene (NF-κB-RE-Luc). Using the highly sensitive Berthold NightOwl LB981 in vivo bioluminescence imaging system, we are able to visualize the NF-κB activation in live mice under basal conditions, suggesting constitutive activation of NF-κB as a part of its fundamental biology. Treatment of mice with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) results in a drastic increase in bioluminescence, …
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Rearing And Nutrition, James Withers, Loren Linford
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Rearing And Nutrition, James Withers, Loren Linford
Biology Posters
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive insect from Asia. It has caused millions of dollars in damage to fruit, vegetable, ornamental, and field crops since its arrival in North America, and can be a severe nuisance pest when it congregates on human structures to overwinter. The BMSB caused $37 million of apple crop damage in the Mid-Atlantic Area in 2007. To study the insect, effective rearing methods are needed. Previous research (Funayama 2004 & 2006; Medal et al. 2012) showed that carrot, raw peanut and soybean increased rearing efficiency. Recent lab experience has found good …

CRISPR systems are RNA-guided microbial adaptive immune systems that have been repurposed for applications in medicine, pharmacology, and agriculture. The hallmark of CRISPR immune systems is the CRISPR sequence contained in the host chromosome, which consists of short direct-repeats of 20-40 bases, followed by unique spacer sequences of about the same length. In 2005 several bioinformatics groups discovered that CRISPR spacer sequences in bacteria and archaea were identical to known microbial pathogens such as viruses and plasmids, suggesting that CRISPRs serve as a molecular memory of encounters with foreign nucleic acid. Since 2005 basic research on these systems has revealed …

Population genomic surveys suggest that climate-associated genetic variation occurs widely across species, but whether it is sufficient to allow population persistence via evolutionary adaptation has seldom been quantified. To ask whether rapid adaptation in reef-building corals can keep pace with future ocean warming, we measured genetic variation at predicted warm-adapted loci and simulated future evolution and persistence in a high-latitude population of corals from Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Alleles associated with thermal tolerance were present but at low frequencies in this cooler, southerly locality. Simulations based on predicted ocean warming in Rarotonga showed rapid evolution of heat tolerance resulting in population …

The Effect Of Text Color And Text Grouping On Attention And Short Term Recall Memory, Emily Haynes
Honors College Research
This study sought to discover whether there was a connection between the attentional draw of a word, as represented by text color and grouping, and the likelihood of it being transferred into short term recall memory. College students at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas were given one of six timed memory test scenarios and asked to recreate the list to the best of their ability. The students were then asked to complete a series of post-test questions designed to measure their perception of their own performance on the test. The students were also asked to complete a demographics questionnaire that …
