Toward Efficient Hub-Less Real Time Personalized Pagerank, Martin Pirouz, Justin Zhan

Computer Science Faculty Research

In the era of big data, reduced models capable of reducing big data graph to estimate personalized PageRank are limited. Personalized PageRank is a page rank calculation where random jumps are only allowed to a subset of start nodes. The resources of current process of calculation of personalized PageRank are highly prohibitive, thus in this paper we propose a novel fast accurate and less resource intensive algorithm to the personalized PageRank problem. FAST Personalized PageRank is utilized to find the target node set. Using the mentioned target set, the algorithm gives an estimation of the closeness of any pair of …

Energy Neutral: The Human Foot And Ankle Subsections Combine To Produce Near Zero Net Mechanical Work During Walking, Kota Z. Takahashi, Kate Worster, Dustin A. Bruening

Journal Articles

The human foot and ankle system is equipped with structures that can produce mechanical work through elastic (e.g., Achilles tendon, plantar fascia) or viscoelastic (e.g., heel pad) mechanisms, or by active muscle contractions. Yet, quantifying the work distribution among various subsections of the foot and ankle can be difficult, in large part due to a lack of objective methods for partitioning the forces acting underneath the stance foot. In this study, we deconstructed the mechanical work production during barefoot walking in a segment-by-segment manner (hallux, forefoot, hindfoot, and shank). This was accomplished by isolating the forces acting within each foot …

The aims of the original proposed project remain the same, that is, to test the hypothesis that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for stormwater harvesting is a technically feasible, socially and environmentally acceptable, economically viable, and legally feasible option for developing new water supplies for arid Western urban ecosystems experiencing increasing population, and climate change pressures on existing water resources. The project is being carried out via three distinct but integrated components that include: 1) Monitoring of existing distributed MAR harvesting schemes involving a growing number of demonstration Green Infrastructure (GI) test sites; 2) Integrated stormwater/vadose zone/groundwater/ ecosystem services modeling; and …

Bacterial Siderophore Production In Lechuguilla And Spider Caves, Carlsbad National Park (Ccnp) Carlsbad, New Mexico, Tammi R. Duncan Nov 2017

Bacterial Siderophore Production In Lechuguilla And Spider Caves, Carlsbad National Park (Ccnp) Carlsbad, New Mexico, Tammi R. Duncan

Biology ETDs

Lechuguilla and Spider caves, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, contain a rich microbial diversity. Despite oligotrophic conditions, the microorganisms in these caves have developed strategies to acquire essential nutrients. I hypothesized that cave bacteria use siderophores, a ferric iron chelating compound, to acquire iron for essential life processes. To understand the backdrop against which the cave bacteria would produce siderophores, I examined the bacterial physiological characteristics, determined whether cave bacteria have an ability to produce siderophores, and investigated a possible correlation between iron and manganese concentrations in cave deposits and siderophore production by bacteria cultured from the same site. I carried …

Incorporation Of Biorationals And Trap Crop For Stink Bug Management In Soybeans, Kukuh Hernowo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Stink bugs are one of the most important seed sucking pests impacting soybean production in Louisiana. Exploration of chemicals that exhibit attraction or repellent activities toward this major pest would be beneficial to develop a push-pull strategy against this pest complex. Spinosad and neem are two commercially available natural insecticides that were claimed to have attractant and repellent activities against stink bugs. To test the potential of these chemicals, a series of experiments was conducted to investigate the olfactory, tactile, feeding, and oviposition preference of stink bugs toward different commercial spinosad products and neem. Additionally, two years of field experiments …

Statistical Analysis And Modeling Of Stomach Cancer Data, Chao Gao

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study is to address some important questions associated with stomach cancer patients using the data from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program of the United States. To better understand the behavior of stomach cancer, we first perform parametric analysis for each patient group (white male, white female, African American male, African American female, other male and female) to identify the probability distribution function which can best characterize the behavior of the malignant stomach tumor sizes. We evaluate the effects of patients’ age, gender and race on the malignant stomach tumor sizes by developing quantile …

The Impact Of Co2-Related Ocean Acidification On The Molecular Regulation Of Shell Development In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica)., Mackenzie L. Richards Nov 2017

The Impact Of Co2-Related Ocean Acidification On The Molecular Regulation Of Shell Development In The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica)., Mackenzie L. Richards

LSU Master's Theses

Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica), native to the Gulf of Mexico, are keystone species in estuarine ecosystems and are economically valued. Current research indicates that ocean acidification adversely affects the physiology and morphology of larval oysters, but the molecular mechanisms of this impact remain unstudied. Ocean acidification is contributed to by elevated atmospheric CO2 due to increased anthropogenic activities, causing heightened partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), and eutrophication from land-based runoff in the Gulf. The objective of this work was to determine the genomic response of the eastern oyster in Louisiana to simulated ocean acidification. …

The Suffering South: 1878 Yellow Fever Narratives And Post-Reconstruction Southern Identity, Jessica Wells Nov 2017

The Suffering South: 1878 Yellow Fever Narratives And Post-Reconstruction Southern Identity, Jessica Wells

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Suffering South offers a cultural history of a yellow fever epidemic that swept through the Mississippi Valley in 1878. It argues that the yellow fever narratives created during this epidemic constituted a discursive attempt by Southerners to renegotiate Southern identity and social hierarchy following the Civil War and Reconstruction. White Southerners, in particular, used the epidemic as an occasion to foster a return to a more traditional foundation of white supremacy and patriarchy as the basis for Southern identity and belonging. The narratives written by these Southerners, in which they described their experiences with yellow fever and the effects …

Q-Analogue Of Aleph-Function And Its Transformation Formulae With Q-Derivative, Altaf Ahmad, Renu Jain, D. K. Jain

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In the present paper, the authors have derived the alternative definition of q-analogue of Aleph-Function, introduced by Dutta et. al.[13], by using q-Gamma function, which is an q-extension of the generalized H-function and I-function earlier defined by Saxena [4] and some transformation formulae are also derived. The basic analogue for this function provides elegant generalizations of the various results given by Saxena in connection with q- calculus. Some special cases have also been discussed.

Cadmium Explains, In Part, The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Cigarette Smoking, Eric M. Hecht Nov 2017

Cadmium Explains, In Part, The Cardiovascular Toxicity Of Cigarette Smoking, Eric M. Hecht

Open Access Dissertations

Cigarette smoking is a well-known cardiovascular risk factor associated with an estimated 311 premature cardiovascular deaths per 100,000 smokers in the United States each year. The mechanism of arterial damage due to tobacco smoke is not fully elucidated. One plausible theory suggests that toxic exposure to one or more chemical constituents found in tobacco smoke causes persistent inflammatory changes at the level of the endothelial cell, which leads to arterial damage and atherosclerosis. The toxic elements found in tobacco smoke currently thought to be most responsible for cardiovascular toxicity include nicotine, carbon monoxide (CO), oxidant gases, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), …

Christmas Pajamas, Carrigan Price Nov 2017

Christmas Pajamas, Carrigan Price

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

For Christmas we get new pajamas every year, like as a family. We do that, like, on Christmas Eve, and that’s my favorite part about Christmas. I don’t know why I like getting new pajamas! My parents, every year, give them to us. We don’t know- we can tell them sometimes, like what we kinda like, but they don’t really listen to us and they just get us whatever they want. And then they just wrap them and we all open them at the same time and it’s really fun.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

A statistical design approach has been used to optimize the production of biomass byCunninghamellasp. 2A1, evaluated based on lipidless biomass. A 23full factorial centralcomposite design (CCD) was chosen to study the combined effects of three factors; ammoniumtartrate, peptone and glucose concentrations. The p-value for each factors was < 0.05 suggestingthat these factors have significant effect on the production of lipidless biomass. The productionis represented by a linear model with p-value < 0.0001. The optimized medium consists of 3.86g/l ammonium tartrate, 55.84 g/l glucose and 7.73 g/l peptone predicted 16.83 g/l lipidlessbiomass. Results from four replications based on the optimized medium produced 18.48 g/llipidless biomass, which are in close agreementwith the predicted value. The coefficient forglucose was the highest indicating it as the most significant factoraffecting lipidless biomassproduction.
