Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Dry bulb mite (DBM), Aceria tulipae, is an economically important mite with a worldwide distribution and a broad host range. As a generalist, it is the most important eriophyoid mite attacking bulbous plants such as garlic, onion and tulip. To date, DBM has been recorded on host plants belonging to the families Liliaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Melanthiaceae and Asparagaceae. However, a precise understanding of DBM host range is lacking as it is largely based on casual records of mites on plants, some of which may include accidental hosts. Moreover, the possible existence of cryptic species has not been considered. In this …

Developmental Measures: The Zika Virus, Microcephaly, And Histories Of Global Northern State Anxieties, Eden Noa Amital

Scripps Senior Theses

This project seeks to understand anxious and fearful responses to the Zika virus and microcephaly that began circulating widely in February, 2016. My project works to uncover racial histories embedded in the contemporary scientific and medical practice of measuring head circumference. By arguing that microcephaly is a racialized metric of civilizational and human development, I show that responses to Zika’s proliferation invoke state security because Global Northern states imagine microcephaly as a developmental, economic, and cultural lag. Dominant scientific and medical characterizations of microcephaly constitute modern, developed states as such by making political conceptions of normalcy and capacity seem natural: …

The effect of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae Ma14 strain, D-limonene, and cypermethrin, alone and combined, on the mortality of Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille larvae was evaluated. Eight separate groups with 25 tick larvae were inoculated with the fungus, cypermethrin, and D-limonene, and four groups were used as untreated controls. The groups were inoculated with serial dilutions of each treatment material: for example, conidial concentrations were 1 x 101, 1 x 102, 1 x 103, 1 x 104, 1 x 105, 1 x 106, 1 x 107, and …

The Effect Of The Chromoshadow Domains Of Hhp1, Hpl1, And Hpl2 On Heterochromatin Protein Localization In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Claire Bagnani Jan 2017

The Effect Of The Chromoshadow Domains Of Hhp1, Hpl1, And Hpl2 On Heterochromatin Protein Localization In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Claire Bagnani

Scripps Senior Theses

In the nucleus, post-translational modifications on histone N-terminal tails can determine how local DNA is packaged. In one case, T. thermophila proteins Hhp1, Hpl1, and Hpl2, all related to the Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) family, are associated with heterochromatin and thus gene silencing. They may do this by binding to trimethylated lysine 9 and lysine 27, located on the tail of histone H3. One distinct region of these proteins, the chromodomain (CD), may bind these marks, while another region, the chromoshadow domain (CSD) homodimerizes to interact with other proteins. This study explores what effect, if any, the CSD has on …

Fto Genotype And Weight Status Among Preadolescents: Assessing The Mediating Effects Of Obesogenic Appetitive Traits, Jennifer A. Emond, Alison Tovar, Zhigang Li, Reina K. Lansigan, Diane Gilbert-Diamond

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Polymorphisms in the Fat Mass and Obesity Associated (FTO) gene are robustly associated with overweight and obesity among children, although the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We tested if appetitive traits partially mediated the association between FTO genotype and increased BMI among a sample of US preadolescents. Data were from 178 unrelated 9–10 year olds who participated in an experimental study between 2013 and 2015. Children's DNA was isolated from buccal swabs, and the rs9939609 SNP in the FTO gene was genotyped. Children's age- and sex-adjusted BMI z-scores were computed using height and weight measured at the laboratory. …

Revised Structure And Correlation Of The Great Salt Lake, North Promontory, Rozel And Hansel Valley Fault Zones Revealed By The 2015-2016 Low Stand Of Great Salt Lake, Susanne U. Jänecke, James P. Evans

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Years of drought conspired to produce the present historic low stand in Gunnison Bay of Great Salt Lake. The lake has receded enough to expose the Great Salt Lake fault zone, and reveal its geometry through the shallow and clear lake water. We mapped the newly visible escarpments along the fault zone, upgraded the Utah fault map, and revised the regional correlation of the Great Salt Lake, Rozel, and North Promontory fault zones. We explored the origin of wave-cut platforms in the footwall of the faults, and identify geometrically unique types of microbial communities along faults and fault-related springs and …

Seagrass Habitats As Nurseries For Reef-Associated Fish: Evidence From Fish Assemblages In And Adjacent To A Recently Established No-Take Marine Reserve In Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, Usa, Kerry E. Flaherty-Walia, Brett Pittinger, Theodore S. Switzer, Sean F. Keenan Jan 2017

Keenan

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Scientists and managers worldwide have increasingly advocated the use of marine protected areas (MPAs) to protect at—risk fish stocks. Most MPAs, however, have been established to protect reefs, while nonreef habitats, such as seagrasses, have received less consideration. In January 2007, an MPA called the Research Natural Area (RNA), was established as a no—take marine reserve in the Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida (DTNP), becoming the first MPA within the park boundaries to offer direct protection to seagrasses and reef habitat. We conducted a study using small—mesh Antillean Z—traps to (1) characterize fish assemblages in seagrass and reef habitats and …

Loop Current Spin-Off Eddies, Slope Currents And Dispersal Of Reef Fish Larvae From The Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary And The Florida Middle Grounds, Donald R. Johnson, Harriet Perry, Guillermo Sanchez-Rubio, Mark A. Grace Jan 2017

Grace

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Large energetic spin—off eddies from Loop Current intrusions into the Gulf of Mexico play a major role in water exchange between the continental shelf and the deep basin in the northern Gulf. Reef fish larvae, spawned on the outer shelf and planktonic during their early life history, are broadly dispersed by this mechanism, but may be lost to the cohort by transport away from suitable settlement habitat. In this study, satellite altimeter data—assimilative ocean model currents (HYCOM) from 2003—2015 are used to calculate kinetic energy of the mixed layer over the upper continental slope (200 m —1000 m) due to …

However, no significant association was found between an altitude of the sample collection and polyphenols content or antioxidant activity.

Impacts Of Terrain Attributes On Economics (Including Variable Rate Nitrogen) And The Environment: Costs Of Reducing Potential Nitrogen Pollution In Wheat Production, Cory Walters Jan 2017

Impacts Of Terrain Attributes On Economics (Including Variable Rate Nitrogen) And The Environment: Costs Of Reducing Potential Nitrogen Pollution In Wheat Production, Cory Walters

Cornhusker Economics

Understanding the influence of variable rate nitrogen technology in other areas can help inform Nebraska producers. The economic cost of achieving desired environmental outcomes from uniform and variable rate fertilizer application technologies depends both on market forces and agronomic properties. Using spatial econometric methods, we analyze the impact of nitrogen fertilizer supply by terrain attribute on the yield and protein content of hard red spring wheat grown in Eastern Washington as well as the impact on residual nitrogen. We find significant association with all three. The economic impact of nitrogen restrictions depends critically on both prices and level of the …

All Sites But Skin Cancer Incidences Analyzed Worldwide By Sex, Age, And Skin Type Over Time (1955-2007), Advancing Age, And Uvb Dose Reveals Important Carcinogenic Drivers, Dianne E. Godar, Rossen Gurov, Stephen Merrill Jan 2017

All Sites But Skin Cancer Incidences Analyzed Worldwide By Sex, Age, And Skin Type Over Time (1955-2007), Advancing Age, And Uvb Dose Reveals Important Carcinogenic Drivers, Dianne E. Godar, Rossen Gurov, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Because we observed increasing incidences over time, advancing age, higher estrogen levels, decreasing UVB (290-315 nm) doses, or lower vitamin D3, and Human Papillomavirus hiding in immune-privileged sites of hair follicles play roles in melanoma, we wondered if the majority of cancers might have similar carcinogenic drivers. To investigate this possibility, we performed worldwide analysis of all sites but skin cancer over time (1955-2007), advancing age, and UVB doses for males and females with all skin types and ages (0-85+) and in five age groups using IARC data. To investigate Human Papillomavirus’s role, we analyzed the incidences of …

Processdriver: A Computational Pipeline To Identify Copy Number Drivers And Associated Disrupted Biological Processes In Cancer, Brittany Baur, Serdar Bozdag

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Copy number amplifications and deletions that are recurrent in cancer samples harbor genes that confer a fitness advantage to cancer tumor proliferation and survival. One important challenge in computational biology is to separate the causal (i.e., driver) genes from passenger genes in large, aberrated regions. Many previous studies focus on the genes within the aberration (i.e., cis genes), but do not utilize the genes that are outside of the aberrated region and dysregulated as a result of the aberration (i.e., trans genes). We propose a computational pipeline, called ProcessDriver, that prioritizes candidate drivers by relating cis genes to …

Fungal Iron Oxidation In Brazilian Iron Caves, Braxton L. Hornick Jan 2017

Fungal Iron Oxidation In Brazilian Iron Caves, Braxton L. Hornick

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The iron caves in Brazil are thought to form through a cycle of Fe(III)-reduction and Fe(II)-oxidation; the Fe(II) is washed out of the cave walls by rainwater, where it is oxidized to Fe(III) and deposited in iron-oxide crusts. Bacteria are known to reduce Fe(III) in the caves, but what species may be oxidizing Fe(II) is still unknown. Our hypotheses was another bacterial species was involved and our initial assays were aimed at isolating Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria; however all our Fe(II)-oxidizing cultures were contaminated with fungi when Fe(II)-oxidation was seen. Antifungals were used to inhibit growth of fungal species, which inhibited both …

Protein Structure Classification And Loop Modeling Using Multiple Ramachandran Distributions, Seyed Morteza Najibi, Mehdi Maadooliat, Lan Zhou, Jianhua Z. Huang, Xin Gao Jan 2017

Protein Structure Classification And Loop Modeling Using Multiple Ramachandran Distributions, Seyed Morteza Najibi, Mehdi Maadooliat, Lan Zhou, Jianhua Z. Huang, Xin Gao

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Recently, the study of protein structures using angular representations has attracted much attention among structural biologists. The main challenge is how to efficiently model the continuous conformational space of the protein structures based on the differences and similarities between different Ramachandran plots. Despite the presence of statistical methods for modeling angular data of proteins, there is still a substantial need for more sophisticated and faster statistical tools to model the large-scale circular datasets. To address this need, we have developed a nonparametric method for collective estimation of multiple bivariate density functions for a collection of populations of protein backbone angles. …

Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma Incidences Analyzed Worldwide By Sex, Age, And Skin Type Over Personal Ultraviolet-B Dose Shows No Role For Sunburn But Implies One For Vitamin D3, Dianne E. Godar, Madhan Subramanian, Stephen Merrill Jan 2017

Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma Incidences Analyzed Worldwide By Sex, Age, And Skin Type Over Personal Ultraviolet-B Dose Shows No Role For Sunburn But Implies One For Vitamin D3, Dianne E. Godar, Madhan Subramanian, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Because the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) was reported to increase with increasing terrestrial UVR (290–400 nm) doses in the US back in 1975 and a recent publication showed no association exists with UVR exposure at all, we set out to fully elucidate the role of UVR in CMM. To achieve this goal, we analyzed the CMM incidences over latitude and estimated the average personal UVR dose in the US and numerous countries (> 50) on 5 continents around the world. Using data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2005, we performed worldwide analysis of CMM …

Untangling The Most Probable Role For Vitamin D3 In Autism, Dianne E. Godar, Stephen J. Merrill Jan 2017

Untangling The Most Probable Role For Vitamin D3 In Autism, Dianne E. Godar, Stephen J. Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Recent studies indicate an important role for vitamin D3 in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), although its mechanism is not completely understood. The most puzzling aspect of ASD is that identical twins, who share identical DNA, do not have 100% concordance rates (∼88% for identical and ∼31% for fraternal twins). These findings provide major clues into the etiology: ASD must involve an environmental factor present in the prenatal milieu that both identical twins are not always exposed to because they do not always share it (i.e., placentas). Combined with the exponential increasing rates of ASD around the world, these observations …

Mapping The Stk4/Hippo Signaling Network In Prostate Cancer Cell, Damien Ready, Kader Yagiz, Pooneh Amin, Yuksel Yildiz, Vincent Funari, Serdar Bozdag, Bekir Cinar

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Dysregulation of MST1/STK4, a key kinase component of the Hippo-YAP pathway, is linked to the etiology of many cancers with poor prognosis. However, how STK4 restricts the emergence of aggressive cancer remains elusive. Here, we investigated the effects of STK4, primarily localized in the cytoplasm, lipid raft, and nucleus, on cell growth and gene expression in aggressive prostate cancer. We demonstrated that lipid raft and nuclear STK4 had superior suppressive effects on cell growth in vitro and in vivo compared with cytoplasmic STK4. Using RNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, we identified several differentially expressed (DE) genes that responded to ectopic …

Some Extended Classes Of Distributions: Characterizations And Properties, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Gauss M. Cordeiro, M. C.S. Lima, A. D.C. Nascimento

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Based on a simple relationship between two truncated moments and certain functions of the th order statistic, we characterize some extended classes of distributions recently proposed in the statistical literature, videlicet Beta-G, Gamma-G, Kumaraswamy-G and McDonald-G. Several properties of these extended classes and some special cases are discussed. We compare these classes in terms of goodness-of-fit criteria using some baseline distributions by means of two real data sets.

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

A subgroup of individuals with mood and psychotic disorders shows evidence of inflammation that leads to activation of the kynurenine pathway and the increased production of neuroactive kynurenine metabolites. Depression is hypothesized to be causally associated with an imbalance in the kynurenine pathway, with an increased metabolism down the 3-hydroxykynurenine (3HK) branch of the pathway leading to increased levels of the neurotoxic metabolite, quinolinic acid (QA), which is a putative Nmethyl- D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor agonist. In contrast, schizophrenia and psychosis are hypothesized to arise from increased metabolism of the NMDA receptor antagonist, kynurenic acid (KynA), leading to hypofunction of GABAergic …

Identification Of Novel Sleep Related Genes From Large Scale Phenotyping Experiments In Mice, Shreyas Joshi Jan 2017

Identification Of Novel Sleep Related Genes From Large Scale Phenotyping Experiments In Mice, Shreyas Joshi

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Humans spend a third of their lives sleeping but very little is known about the physiological and genetic mechanisms controlling sleep. Increased data from sleep phenotyping studies in mouse and other species, genetic crosses, and gene expression databases can all help improve our understanding of the process. Here, we present analysis of our own sleep data from the large-scale phenotyping program at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), to identify the best gene candidates and phenotype predictors for influencing sleep traits.

The original knockout mouse project (KOMP) was a worldwide collaborative effort to produce embryonic stem (ES) cell lines with one of …

The Stem Dilemma: Skills That Matter To Regions, Fran Stewart

Upjohn Press

Fran Stewart dives into the murky waters where education and economic goals meet to confront several key issues facing policymakers and educators, including the role of public investment in human capital, the types of human capital investment that provide the greatest public return, and whether those investments should vary by region.

She shows that not all high-paying jobs require STEM skills; that not all good-paying, highly skilled STEM jobs require college degrees; and that "soft skills" are important for STEM as well as other high-paying jobs.

Preservation Of Sea Anemone Burrows In Silurian (~432 Million Years Old) Carbonate Rocks Of Southeastern Indiana, Usa, Marissa Tomin Jan 2017

Preservation Of Sea Anemone Burrows In Silurian (~432 Million Years Old) Carbonate Rocks Of Southeastern Indiana, Usa, Marissa Tomin

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Preservation of trace fossils (ichnofossils) in siliciclastic environments is often quite different from preservation in carbonate environments, representing an important source of variation that must be well understood in order to enhance interpretations of paleoenvironments and paleoecology. This study focuses on Conostichus, a relatively common burrow constructed by solitary sea anemones. These trace fossils are generally well-preserved (i.e., they display detailed external features) in siliciclastic rocks but are typically little more than conical masses in carbonate rocks. However, certain specimens recovered from the middle Silurian Massie Formation at the Napoleon quarry of southeastern Indiana are composed entirely out of …

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM) AND ADOLESCENT BODY MASS INDEX (BMI): A NATIONAL POPULATION-BASED STUDY

Abstract

Background

Childhood obesity rates in the United States have remained around 17% since the 1990s - this figure translates to an estimated 12.7 million obese children. Maintaining a healthy weight through adolescence may limit subsequent health risks in adulthood. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses a variety of non-pharmacological treatments and lifestyle choices that have been utilized in addition to or in place of typical Western medicine. The relationship between adolescent Body mass index (BMI) and the use of complementary and alternative medicine has …

Improving Patient Throughput In Akron General Cleveland Clinic Postpartum Unit, Emily Lather Jan 2017

Improving Patient Throughput In Akron General Cleveland Clinic Postpartum Unit, Emily Lather

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Exceeding hospital limitations can impair safety and induce unnecessary health risks for patients and staff. At Akron General Cleveland Clinic (AGCC), current birth rates are double the amount the facility is designed to handle. In order to accommodate increasing numbers, it must be seen that birthing mothers and their infants are not withholding space more than what is deemed required. Patients are permitted to stay 48 to 96 hours proceeding birth, given the type of delivery. However, many are unaware that they can be discharged between 24 and 48 hours post-delivery, so long as a physician has signed off on …

The Effects Of Polyunsaturated Aldehydes On Pelagic Microbial Food Webs In The Chesapeake Bay Area And Atlantic Coastal Waters, Chase Alfman Jan 2017

The Effects Of Polyunsaturated Aldehydes On Pelagic Microbial Food Webs In The Chesapeake Bay Area And Atlantic Coastal Waters, Chase Alfman

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Diatoms, one of the most common classes of phytoplankton, are autotrophic plankton, and are the primary food source for many organisms. Diatoms play a key role in nearly all oceanic food webs. Under stressful conditions, diatoms can undergo biological changes that produce cytotoxic secondary metabolites such as polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUA’s). This process is a form of allelopathy, utilized by many algae as a defense mechanism against predation, as well as to inhibit competitors. Microzooplankton are an essential part of these aquatic food webs as well, as they are a key herbivore in many oceanic environments. A set of experiments was …

Measuring Bacterial Growth Using A 3d-Printable Spectrometer, Samuel R. Bunting Jan 2017

Measuring Bacterial Growth Using A 3d-Printable Spectrometer, Samuel R. Bunting

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Visible light spectroscopy is a commonly used technique for measuring the growth of bacterial cultures, and growth curves provide broadly important data. However, the equipment and resources required for these experiments has been restricted to higher education and industry due to high cost and sophistication. We have previously reported on an inexpensive, 3D-printable photospectrometer called the SpecPhone. This device utilizes an iPhone as the camera, along with several other, inexpensive additions to make a fully functional spectrometer. Here, the application of the SpecPhone is expanded to the quantification of actively dividing E. coli cultures. Two protocols have been developed; one …

When Does Sex Diversity On Boards Benefit Firms?, Darren Rosenblum

Faculty Publications

Firms embrace diversity, especially with regard to sex. Overtly optimistic predictions of a diversity dividend, some built on sex stereotypes, lead these firms to count on profits that may never materialize. This Article attempts to reset the agenda on how to study corporate board diversity. We can only assess if and how sex diversity yields benefits by understanding the who, what, and where of diversity. Whether sex diversity produces a “diversity dividend” depends on three key factors: (1) the nature of the benefit of including women (whether for their experience or other qualities); (2) the kind of firm and its …
