Leakage Evaluation Of Three Endodontic Sealers Used In A Single-Cone Technique: A Study Using Bioluminescent Bacteria, Sean M. Horan Jan 2017

Leakage Evaluation Of Three Endodontic Sealers Used In A Single-Cone Technique: A Study Using Bioluminescent Bacteria, Sean M. Horan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction.;After proper chemomechanical disinfection and obturation of a root canal system, the next important goal in endodontic therapy is obtaining an adequate coronal seal. If the coronal seal becomes compromised, it is difficult to decide whether the root canal system should be re-treated. This decision should be made based on the ability of the root canal filling to resist bacterial contamination and on the length of time the seal has been compromised.;The root canal system should be filled in three dimensions, typically with a combination of gutta percha and sealer. One obturation method that has seen a revival in recent …

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson Jan 2017

Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditional cigarette usage has been linked to a number of nefarious metabolic effects, including insulin resistance; however, the effects of electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) are not currently known. Advertised as a safe alternative for traditional tobacco cigarettes, E-cigs still contain some of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco cigarettes. Through this study, we hope to gain perspective on whether e-cigs play into the development of altered glucose homeostasis. C57BL/6 mice were divided between E-cig (n=15) and control (n=15) groups and exposed to either cappuccino flavored E-cig vapor or filtered air for 4 h/d, 5 d/wk for 8 months. Fasting blood glucose …

Teaching Public Policy Drafting In Law School: One Professor's Approach, Lisa A. Rich Jan 2017

Teaching Public Policy Drafting In Law School: One Professor's Approach, Lisa A. Rich

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides an overview of the Drafting for Public Policy course offered at the Texas A&M University School of Law. The article addresses the theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of the course, including how such a course easily encompasses the teaching of cultural context and awareness, as well as professional identity, and encourages students to engage deeply in the policymaking process. It also explores the continued relevance of the work of Harold D. Lasswell, as well as that of Myres McDougal and Anthony Kronman. These works, from 1943 and 1993 respectively, resonate now because they called on law schools to …

The Rcep And Intellectual Property Normsetting In The Asia-Pacific, Peter K. Yu Jan 2017

The Rcep And Intellectual Property Normsetting In The Asia-Pacific, Peter K. Yu

Commissioned for the CEIPI-ICTSD Series on Global Perspectives and Challenges for the Intellectual Property System, this article examines the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) with a focus on the intellectual property norms it seeks to develop. It begins by briefly discussing the partnership’s historical origins and ongoing negotiations. It then examines the latest leaked draft of the RCEP intellectual property chapter, highlighting the key provisions concerning copyright and related rights, trademarks, patents, trade secrets and undisclosed information, and intellectual property enforcement. This article concludes by exploring three scenarios concerning the future of this chapter--namely, the lack of an intellectual property …

Fracking Health Care: How To Safely De-Medicalize America And Recover Trapped Value For Its People, William M. Sage Jan 2017

Fracking Health Care: How To Safely De-Medicalize America And Recover Trapped Value For Its People, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

The wealth trapped within American health care is simultaneously a tragedy and a miracle. It is a tragedy because stagnating wages, widening disparities in income, ballooning deficits, and stunted investments in education and social services make such medical profligacy shameful. It is a miracle because it still exists, whereas other U.S. economic resources of similar magnitude have already been dissipated by global market forces without addressing any of the aforementioned failings – indeed, sometimes having contributed to them. It therefore can be released and used.

It is time to “frack the health care system” and innovate the de-medicalization of America. …

The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh Jan 2017

The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Two modes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion are necessary for female fertility: surge and episodic secretion. However, the neural systems that regulate these GnRH secretion patterns are still under investigation. The neuropeptide somatostatin (SST) inhibits episodic luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in humans and sheep, and several lines of evidence suggest SST may regulate secretion during the LH surge. Neither a SST receptor 2 (SSTR2) agonist (octreotide) or antagonist (CYN154806; CYN) altered the amplitude or timing of the LH surge. Administration of CYN to intact ewes during either the breeding season or anestrus increased LH secretion and …

The Frontier In Paris: Artists From The American West In The French Capital, 1890–1900, James R. Swensen Jan 2017

The Frontier In Paris: Artists From The American West In The French Capital, 1890–1900, James R. Swensen

Faculty Publications

From 1890 to 1900 several artists traveled from the American West to Paris to advance their studies. Coming from the “wild West,” the French capital represented for them the most sophisticated city on earth. Interestingly, they found Paris to be a place of danger and adventure, a frontier of its own right. They also discovered that their European peers longed for images of a frontier West that included Native Americans, cowboys, and wild animals. Through their experiences in this new and exotic land, artists from Robert Henri to Cyrus Dallin learned that the frontier was more of a state of …

What Does It Feel Like To Be An Electroreceptive Fish?, Leo Bernd Kramer Jan 2017

What Does It Feel Like To Be An Electroreceptive Fish?, Leo Bernd Kramer

Animal Sentience

The weakly electric knifefish Eigenmannia emits an electric organ discharge (EOD) of constant frequency and sinusoidal waveform that varies with sex and age. Eigenmannia discriminates among these except when stimulated at the same frequency as its own EOD frequency. In that case, it needs to perform a Jamming Avoidance Response (frequency shift) which results in a beating mixed signal. By a sophisticated analysis of the amplitude and phase modulations of the beat signal, Eigenmannia derives the frequency difference, its sign, and the waveform of the stimulus, hence the signaller’s identity. The human ear is not capable of an equivalent waveform …

Fishes Are Gaining Academic Respect, Jonathan Balcombe

Animal Sentience

I respond to five commentaries on my 2016 book What a Fish Knows. The commentaries express more harmony than dissent about my interpretation of fishes as cognitive, aware individuals deserving better treatment by humankind.

Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Space Use In A Sanctuary Setting, Holly Soubiea Jan 2017

Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Space Use In A Sanctuary Setting, Holly Soubiea

All Master's Theses

Studies of chimpanzee space use can provide information about chimpanzees’ preferences and welfare. This study examined the space use of 12 chimpanzees at Fauna Foundation, a chimpanzee sanctuary located in Carignan, Québec, Canada. Observers recorded the chimpanzees’ location, elevation, perimeter, and substrate using a scan sampling procedure. In total, there were 93 hours of data and 3,190 scans. The author used Geographical Information System (GIS) to plot the chimpanzees’ location for each scan. The chimpanzees used the largest rooms most often, were inside 61% (n = 1,942) of the time, an arm’s reach away from the perimeter 90% (n = …

The Social Behavior Of Rehabilitated Spider Monkeys (Ateles Geoffroyi), Anthony Denice Jan 2017

The Social Behavior Of Rehabilitated Spider Monkeys (Ateles Geoffroyi), Anthony Denice

All Master's Theses

The welfare of captive primates in laboratories, sanctuaries, and zoos is affected by various aspects of their environments. Although space restrictions increase aggression and stress-related behaviors in most captive animals, primates show diverse mechanisms for displacing stress and mitigating conflict. Many primates, including wild spider monkeys (genus Ateles), use these mechanisms flexibly to cope with social and environmental stressors. I investigated whether or not captive black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) use behavioral strategies to cope with potential stressors in captivity. In particular, I tested whether an affiliative or avoidant strategy was used in response to changes in …

Collective Decision Making In Tibetan Macaques: How Followers Affect The Rules And Efficiency Of Group Movement, Amanda Rowe Jan 2017

Collective Decision Making In Tibetan Macaques: How Followers Affect The Rules And Efficiency Of Group Movement, Amanda Rowe

All Master's Theses

Primate societies must undergo successful collective decision making during group movement to stay cohesive and provide the ecological and evolutionary benefits of sociality. This study investigates how a fan structure facilitates successful group movement in the YA1 group of Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at Mt. Huangshan National Reserve in Anhui, China. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to determine the relative influences of sex, age, maternal kinship, dominance, and social network centrality on the number of fans (consistent followers) an individual had, and the number of group members an individual was a fan of (fandom). SEM revealed that …

Modeling Sex-Specific Seasonal Habitat Selection For Elk (Cervus Elaphus) In Central Washington, Lewis Meyers Jan 2017

Modeling Sex-Specific Seasonal Habitat Selection For Elk (Cervus Elaphus) In Central Washington, Lewis Meyers

All Master's Theses

Elk (Cervus elaphus) are generalist herbivores, exploiting a variety of environments. I studied habitat selection and sexual segregation of the Colockum elk herd in central Washington. I used a resource selection probability function (RSPF) to evaluate habitat use by males and females during summer and winter seasons. I assisted Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) in capturing and placing GPS collars on males, and used an existing GPS dataset from females to investigate the extent to which sexual segregation was occurring in the Colockum herd. During summer, males selected steep slopes on north, west and south …

Metaphysics Of Mania: Edgar Allan Poe's And Herman Melville's Rebranding Of Madness During The American Asylum Movement, Alexis Renfro Jan 2017

Metaphysics Of Mania: Edgar Allan Poe's And Herman Melville's Rebranding Of Madness During The American Asylum Movement, Alexis Renfro

All Master's Theses

The “madman’s” place throughout history has tended to be a mystery on both ontological and epistemological levels. From the perception of the madman as a crazed oracle in the sixteenth century to the perception of the madman as a criminal in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the nineteenth-century madman was even more difficult to define. Because insanity was deemed the inverse of bourgeois normativity and conservative moral standards, those categorized as mad in America during mid-1800s were institutionalized in reformed mental asylums, establishments which sought to homogenize human behavior through moral treatment. Both Edgar Allan Poe and Herman Melville drew …

“No Other Agency”: Public Education (K-12) In Washington State During World War I And The Red Scare, 1917-1920, Jennifer Nicole Arleen Crooks Jan 2017

“No Other Agency”: Public Education (K-12) In Washington State During World War I And The Red Scare, 1917-1920, Jennifer Nicole Arleen Crooks

All Master's Theses

This paper examines the impact of World War I and the Red Scare upon public education in Washington State. Schools, expected to be the instruments of governmental policy, played an important role in the everyday lives of people on the American homefront. Although many helped in the war effort willingly, this wartime drive included both instilling nationalism and loyalty to American political and economic institutions as well as the assimilation of immigrants. While these forces existed well before World War I and the Red Scare, they strengthened and became more publicly acceptable in 1917-1920 as more people grew convinced that …

Do Homework Trackers Affect Students’ Academic Performance?, Luisdaniel Barrera Jan 2017

Do Homework Trackers Affect Students’ Academic Performance?, Luisdaniel Barrera

All Master's Theses

With new state assessment requirements for high school graduation, teachers are focusing on different strategies to assist students to achieve those goals. Many teachers state that students who complete homework perform better academically. The current study analyzed whether homework planners (trackers) had any positive effect on the academic performance of 16 seventh grade students in a very small and rural school district. This was a mixed study (quantitative and qualitative). Students’ grades, district assessments, state assessments, and teacher surveys were analyzed. The results showed that students improved their math and English Language Arts (ELA) district assessment scores when compared from …

A Comparison Of Seedling Diversity And Abundance In The Range Of Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliata) In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Erin Connelly Jan 2017

A Comparison Of Seedling Diversity And Abundance In The Range Of Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliata) In Bocas Del Toro, Panama, Erin Connelly

All Master's Theses

In this study, I investigated the potential effect of howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) defecations on the diversity and abundance of seedlings on the forest floor of a tropical lowland forest in Bocas del Toro, Panama. I conducted follows on a howler monkey group for 18 days and found six trees the monkeys used for sleeping. During this time, I collected feces and extracted the ingested seeds. I counted the seeds and identified the seed genus when possible. After this initial observation period, I constructed transects in random directions covering the entire tree crown underneath sleeping trees. I collected …

Bioavailable Iron In Equatorial Pacific Ocean Aerosol Samples, Hsiang T Teng Jan 2017

Bioavailable Iron In Equatorial Pacific Ocean Aerosol Samples, Hsiang T Teng

All Master's Theses

Oceanic iron (Fe) fertilization experiments performed in remote regions have established that Fe additions draw carbon into the ocean, at least over the months-long time frame of the experiments. However, the mechanisms that control Fe speciation in atmospheric aerosol particles before and after deposition into the surface ocean remain largely unknown. This is in part due to the analytical challenge of quantifying Fe at environmentally significant sub-nano molar levels. The flow injection analysis method combined with the luminol chemiluminescence analytical system allows us to explore the near-real time determination of pico-molar levels of both Fe(II) and H2O2 …

All Master's Theses

Few studies have explored the continuing relationship and behaviors within primate groups as the offspring mature and continue to depend on parental care. Between June 7 and July 7, 2016, I studied the family dynamics of 5 gibbon groups from 4 species: hoolock (Hoolock leuconedys), Javan (Hylobates moloch), pileated (H. pileatus) and northern white-cheeked (Nomascus leucogenys) gibbons housed at the Gibbon Conservation Center (GCC) in Santa Clarita, CA. I recorded all occurrences of approach, retreat, groom and play behaviors as well as the proximity individuals maintain between each other. I predicted: 1. …

Salmonids In An Urban Stream: Movement, Habitat, And Potential Barriers, Connor Thomas Parrish Jan 2017

Salmonids In An Urban Stream: Movement, Habitat, And Potential Barriers, Connor Thomas Parrish

All Master's Theses

Studies on the movement of salmonids in the Pacific Northwest have been vital to their management and recovery. Salmonids can move great distances in search of food, habitat and potential mates, requiring them to travel through a range of different habitat types. Altered and degraded streams may restrict native salmonid use and access to habitat within or beyond urban areas. Locally, restoring native salmonids to streams in urbanized areas is of interest to recovery efforts. However, there is a lack of information in the literature on how salmonids use and navigate urbanized streams. This study used Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT-tags) …

Consciousness Is Not Inherent In But Emergent From Life, Jon Mallatt, Todd E. Feinberg Jan 2017

Consciousness Is Not Inherent In But Emergent From Life, Jon Mallatt, Todd E. Feinberg

Animal Sentience

Reber’s theory of the cellular basis of consciousness (CBC) is right to emphasize that we should study consciousness (sentience) in its simplest form, taking its evolution into account. However, not enough evidence is presented to support CBC’s unorthodox claim that even simple, one-celled organisms are conscious. As pointed out by other commentators, the CBC seems to be based on outdated ideas about evolution and does not acknowledge that consciousness could be an evolutionary novel feature. Such emergent features are abundant in living organisms. We review our own emergentist solution, in which consciousness evolved in the elaborating nervous systems of the …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This project made use of a suite of palaeoecological approaches to reconstruct a chronology of change in coastal water quality over the last approximately 100 years. The biogeochemical proxies addressed phytoplankton composition and biomass, temperature and terrestrial influences. Where possible these were matched to historical land/water use, meteorological or hydrological observational records.

The project examined sediment cores from three coastal locations in the Kimberley region, Koolama Bay (King George River), Cygnet Bay and Roebuck Bay. Each sampling location provided a contrast with which to evaluate changes over either a spatial or temporal gradient of human or natural influences.

Triangulating Public Meaning: Corpus Linguistics, Immersion, And The Constitutional Record, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay contributes to the development of an originalist methodology by making the case for an approach that employs three distinct methods, each of which serves as a basis for confirming or questioning the results reached by the other two. This approach will be called the Method of Triangulation. The three component techniques are as follows:

(1) The Method of Corpus Linguistics: The method of corpus linguistics employs large-scale data sets (corpora) that provide evidence of linguistic practice.

(2) The Originalist Method of Immersion: The method of immersion requires researchers to immerse themselves in the linguistic and conceptual world of …

Serbian Jerusalem: Religious Nationalism, Globalization And The Invention Of A Holy Land In Europe's Periphery, 1985-2017, Vjekoslav Perica Jan 2017

Serbian Jerusalem: Religious Nationalism, Globalization And The Invention Of A Holy Land In Europe's Periphery, 1985-2017, Vjekoslav Perica

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

According to beliefs of religious nationalism, a nation is a community of ancestors and descendants, dead and living, past and present. As such, it incorporates within its territory all past and present markers of nationhood, notably historic religious monuments as the physical evidence of the perennial existence of the religious and ethnic community that is, in the nationalist imagination, of the nation. Thus, the history of the shrines and monuments, as told in religious tales and preserved in the rituals, is the history of the nation. In many parts of the world, contesting claims to consecrated territories clash. The struggles …

Development Of The Meal Framework: A Multiliteracies Approach To Engaging Adolescents In Nutrition Education, Samantha Lee Baker Jan 2017

Development Of The Meal Framework: A Multiliteracies Approach To Engaging Adolescents In Nutrition Education, Samantha Lee Baker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Establishing and maintaining a healthy diet is integral in promoting optimal health, growth and development. Moreover, the food choices we make and dietary behaviours we adopt are a reflection of the multiple personal, interpersonal and environmental factors to which we are exposed. Consequently, changing food habits and dietary behaviour is complex and requires the implementation of multifaceted public health strategies. Comprehensive nutrition education provided to adolescents during their school years is one such approach.

Adolescence is a period of rapid psychological and physiological changes. At a socioemotional level, there is a decreased level of dependence on parents and a greater …

Genetic Markers In Circulating Tumour Cells As A Measure Of The Metastatic Propensity Of Uveal Melanoma, Aaron Beasley Jan 2017

Genetic Markers In Circulating Tumour Cells As A Measure Of The Metastatic Propensity Of Uveal Melanoma, Aaron Beasley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Background: Uveal melanoma (UM) is an extremely aggressive disease with approximately 50% of patients developing incurable metastatic disease. Therefore, accurate prognosis of a patient is necessary for closer follow up and the earlier implementation of systemic adjuvant therapies in those most likely to develop metastatic disease. Fortunately, UM can be classified into two distinct molecular classes based on clinically validated gene expression profiling, chromosomal aberrations and specific driver mutations, which accurately predict the metastatic propensity of the primary tumour. However, genetic testing currently requires biopsy of the eye which can lead to serious complications including permanent blindness. Therefore, an alternative …

The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe Jan 2017

The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Athletes regularly monitor exercise workload in an attempt to improve and maintain exercise performance. Within road cycling, workload is commonly measured using power output. Yet, it is plausible that power output during road cycling is influenced by several factors such as topography, road gradient or rider specialities. If these factors do influence power output they may influence quantification of workload demands. As such, the purpose of this thesis was to improve our understanding of external workload in professional road cycling and describe the factors which influence power output during performance analysis. Specifically, this thesis examined the power output within single …
