Rest In The Zebrafish, David J. Echevarria, Kanza M. Khan
Rest In The Zebrafish, David J. Echevarria, Kanza M. Khan
Faculty Publications
The purpose and function of sleep has been the topic of discussion for several centuries. Though our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the propagation and maintenance of rest states has undergone significant improvement, much remains to be learned with regards to the effects of disrupted sleep on diseased states. A deeper understanding of the neural circuitry and associated phenotypes would allow for the identification of sleep-related pathologies as well as the development of therapies for individuals with sleep disorders. To this end, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) pose a great advantage. Zebrafish are a diurnal animal, and the sleep rhythms of …
Utilization Of Different Anti-Viral Mechanisms By Mammalian Embryonic Stem Cells And Differentiated Cells, Yan-Lin Guo
Utilization Of Different Anti-Viral Mechanisms By Mammalian Embryonic Stem Cells And Differentiated Cells, Yan-Lin Guo
Faculty Publications
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) have received tremendous attention because of their potential applications in regenerative medicine. Over the past two decades, intensive research has not only led to the generation of various types of cells from ESCs that can be potentially used for the treatment of human diseases but also led to the formation of new concepts and breakthroughs that have significantly impacted our understanding of basic cell biology and developmental biology. Recent studies have revealed that ESCs and other types of pluripotent cells do not have a functional interferon (IFN)-based anti-viral mechanism, challenging the idea that the IFN system …

Growth And Spawning Dynamics Of Southern Flounder In The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Morgan M. Corey, Robert T. Leaf, Nancy Brown-Peterson, Mark S. Peterson, Samuel D. Clardy, David Dippold
Faculty Publications
Southern Flounder Paralichthys lethostigma is the most commonly harvested flatfish in the north-central Gulf of Mexico (GOM), yet knowledge of this species’ growth and reproduction is limited for the Mississippi region. Given the offshore spawning migrations and likely mixing between state-managed units of the GOM Southern Flounder stock, small-scale environmental influences may constitute a major driver of life history dynamics during early life residency in nearshore estuaries. Therefore, estimates of local demographic characteristics are needed for effective fishery management. Here, we describe critical life history traits of Southern Flounder, including estimation of growth rates and maturity. The three-parameter von Bertalanffy …

Conformity Motives For Alcohol Use Are Associated With Risky Sexual Behavior Among Alcohol-Dependent Patients In Residential Substance Abuse Treatment, Sarah J. Bujarksi, Daniel W. Capron, Kim L. Gratz, Matthew T. Tull
Faculty Publications
Alcohol misuse is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including risky sexual behavior (RSB). In an attempt to better identify the subset of individuals at greatest risk for these negative outcomes, a growing body of research has begun to examine the role of alcohol use motives in risk for alcohol use-related negative outcomes. Although the majority of research in this area has focused on coping motives, conformity motives may be particularly relevant to outcomes such as RSB. Specifically, conformity motives may operate as a proxy risk factor for RSB, reflecting the tendency to engage in interpersonally-oriented risk behaviors in …
Ethnographic Insights Into Safety Communication For Frontline Workers, Kelly Jaunzems, Lelia Green, David Leith, Christine Teague
Ethnographic Insights Into Safety Communication For Frontline Workers, Kelly Jaunzems, Lelia Green, David Leith, Christine Teague
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Recent calls for organisation studies to embrace ‘the practice turn’ (Whittington, 2011) have expanded into an understanding of the potential for ethnographic research in occupational health and safety (OHS) research (Pink et al., 2016). The ethnographic project described here, with fieldwork conducted between 2008 and 2010, is one element of this growing appreciation of the potential for qualitative research in industrial settings. Ethnographies have not often been used in OHS settings, and ‘much practicebased knowledge remains undocumented, informal, unspoken and thus unaccounted for’ (Pink et al., 2016, p. 27). This study was motivated by an aim to make explicit the …
Little Streams And Legal Transformations, Dave Owen
Little Streams And Legal Transformations, Dave Owen
Utah Law Review
In 1972, Congress passed a statute whose text offered sweeping protection for waterways across the nation. In theory, those protections extended to little streams. Actual practices were different, not just in the 1970s but also well into the 1990s. But over the past twenty years, small streams have become a central focus of regulatory protection, with the extent and type of those protections continuing to evolve to this day, and with additional changes still possible. The future of that evolution is uncertain, and it may hang in the balance; Congress, the incoming administration, or the courts could nip much of …
The Ends And Means Of Pollution Control: Toward A Positive Theory Of Environmental Law, David M. Driesen
The Ends And Means Of Pollution Control: Toward A Positive Theory Of Environmental Law, David M. Driesen
Utah Law Review
An understanding of environmental law’s means and ends makes it possible to understand the field as a whole, both in terms of the overall structure of statutes and relationships between means and ends. This analysis of means and ends yields a host of valuable insights and significant research questions. It also provides an important foundation for evaluating proposed regulatory reforms. A reasonably complete theory, at a minimum, should also explain key features of the enforcement regime and the allocation of authority among governments. The theory of means and ends articulated here constitutes a very substantial step forward in constructing a …
Lactic Acid Bacteria As Bio-Preservatives In Bakery – Role Of Sourdough Systems In The Quality, Safety And Shelf Life Of Bread, Rebaz Koy
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Microbial contamination and survival during storage of bread are a cause of both health concerns and economic losses. Traditional fermentation systems were studied as sources of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with antagonistic potential against foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms, with the aim to improve the safety and shelf life of bakery products. The antagonistic activity of four types of buttermilk (BM) products fermented with Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis was evaluated against a number of pathogenic bacteria to select the best fermented-BM for application as bio-preservatives in bread crumpets, showing up to 9 µg/ml of nisin equivalent antimicrobial activity. These food …
Taxonomy, Physiology And Biochemistry Of The Sulfur Bacteria, Lee Hutt
Taxonomy, Physiology And Biochemistry Of The Sulfur Bacteria, Lee Hutt
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Inorganic sulfur-oxidising Bacteria are present throughout the Proteobacteria and inhabit all environments of Earth. Despite these facts they are still poorly understood in terms of taxonomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics. Using phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic analysis two species that were erroneously classified as Thiobacillus trautweinii spp. in 1921 and 1934 are in fact novel chemolithoheterotrophic species for which the names Pseudomonas trautweiniana sp. nov. and Achromobacter starkeyanus sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. These species were found to oxidise thiosulfate in a “fortuitous” manor when grown in continuous culture and increases in maximum theoretical growth yield (YMAX) and maximum specific growth rate …
Calcification In Coccolithophores, Glenn Harper
Calcification In Coccolithophores, Glenn Harper
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Abstract Coccolithophores are uni-cellular phytoplankton and they form an exceedingly diverse group in the phylum Haptophyta. They produce highly complex structures known as coccoliths by a biomineralisation process known as calcification. The first part of the work undertaken was to investigate the process of calcification in the coccolithophore Coccolithus pelagicus using a combination of Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy techniques. This allowed better understanding of the formation, transit of the coccolith through the cell until its final placing in the coccosphere. The second part of the work looked at the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi which …

Fish Intestinal Cultures For Ecotoxicological Studies: In Vitro And Primary Culture Models, Laura Langan
Fish Intestinal Cultures For Ecotoxicological Studies: In Vitro And Primary Culture Models, Laura Langan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Ecotoxicity testing of chemicals for environmental risk assessment is an area where a high number of vertebrates are used across a variety of industrial sectors. The application of the 3Rs in toxicity testing using fish address both the ethical and societal concerns around this issue in addition to the increasing legislative requests for the incorporation of animal alternatives. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of 3D cell culture models to "bridge the gap" between in vitro and in vivo screening procedures for testing of chemicals with the potential to persist or bioaccumulate thereby improving the predictive power of screening …
Modulation Of Innate Immune Cells By The Nad+ Pathway, Abbas Jawad Al-Shabany
Modulation Of Innate Immune Cells By The Nad+ Pathway, Abbas Jawad Al-Shabany
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
NAD+ has previously been shown to regulate TNF-α synthesis and TNF-α has been shown to regulate NAD+ homeostasis, thus providing a link between a pro-inflammatory response and redox status. Despite the well-established link between TNF-α and NAD+, the mechanism as to how NAD+ modulates TNF-α release is not fully understood. To achieve this, this link was investigated using THP-1 cell line-derived M1-like (pro-inflammatory) and M2-like (anti-inflammatory) macrophages using PMA and vitamin D3, respectively. NAD+ levels differed markedly between M1-like and M2-like macrophages, with M1-like having much higher basal levels. LPS increases NAD+ levels and TNF-α secretion in M1-like but not …
Authenticity And Quality Of Muscle Foods: Assessing Consumer Trust And Fraud Detection Approaches, Salih Mustafa Salih
Authenticity And Quality Of Muscle Foods: Assessing Consumer Trust And Fraud Detection Approaches, Salih Mustafa Salih
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Authenticity issues and fraudulent practices regarding animal products are affecting consumer confidence. Verifying the description, composition, processing or origin of foods can be challenging. To explore British and Kurdish consumers’ perceptions of kebab meat products, focus groups and questionnaire surveys were applied. About 40% of participants in the UK tend to purchase fewer processed meats after the European horsemeat scandal. Issues raised by participants indicated their concerns about the declaration of species, meat content, and other ingredients incorporated in kebab and other meat products. Lack of consumer trust has been linked to authenticity issues. Reactions towards the addition of fat-replacing …
Understanding Rarity And Latitudinal Range Relationships In European Diving Beetles (Dytiscidae) Using Metabolic Plasticity And Immunocompetence., Rebekah Katie Elizabeth Cioffi
Understanding Rarity And Latitudinal Range Relationships In European Diving Beetles (Dytiscidae) Using Metabolic Plasticity And Immunocompetence., Rebekah Katie Elizabeth Cioffi
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Whilst the geographical range of species is a fundamental unit of macroecology and a leading predictor of extinction risk, the evolutionary dynamics of species’ ranges remain poorly understood. In some aquatic beetles, thermal niche has been shown to be related to both the relative range size and position of congeners but whether other physiological niche parameters play a role is unknown. Here, immunocompetence and metabolic plasticity were related to biogeography in these insects. Immunocompetence was first compared within a rare-common pair of Hydroporus species, finding species-specific immunity, which was affected by sex and acclimation time in the laboratory, with no …
Field Observations Of Infragravity Wave Response To Variable Sea-Swell Wave Forcing, Kris William Inch
Field Observations Of Infragravity Wave Response To Variable Sea-Swell Wave Forcing, Kris William Inch
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Infragravity waves are low frequency (0.005-0.04 Hz) waves that can dominate the spectrum of water motions and sediment transport processes within the inner surf zone. Despite the established importance of infragravity waves in shaping our coasts and numerous studies dating back to the 1950s, several aspects of infragravity wave analysis, generation and dissipation remain poorly understood. As much of the recent infragravity research has focussed on fetch-limited coasts, less is known about the climatology of these waves on energetic coastlines subject to both swell and fetch-limited waves. It has been postulated that bed friction only plays a significant role in …
Factors Affecting Participation In Group Agri-Environment Schemes: A Case Study Of The Dartmoor Commons, Ann Willcocks
Factors Affecting Participation In Group Agri-Environment Schemes: A Case Study Of The Dartmoor Commons, Ann Willcocks
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Environmental stewardship schemes are an important driver of biodiversity and habitat improvement throughout England, with the provision of funding to land managers to deliver effective land management that will benefit wildlife, habitats, natural resources and the population. Participation in agri-environment schemes is voluntary and much is done to encourage scheme participation. Dartmoor is a designated landscape, a National Park, and a Special Area of Conservation and encompasses areas of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Dartmoor is a farmed landscape, with the area divided into 92 common land units, over which a diversity of common rights are exercised. At present, …
Migratory Behaviour And Spatial Dynamics Of Large Sharks And Their Conservation Implications, James Simon Eaton Lea
Migratory Behaviour And Spatial Dynamics Of Large Sharks And Their Conservation Implications, James Simon Eaton Lea
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Determining the dynamic nature of animal movement has been an important component in a wider understanding of animal population ecology. Generally, this is because temporal change in the density of a population at a specific geographic location is not only a function of births and deaths but also of movements, including migration. The increased availability of remote telemetry and biologging systems in recent years has enabled many studies tracking marine predators, such as turtles, seabirds and marine mammals, but a general understanding of spatial dynamics in large sharks remains less well developed. This is in part due to few studies …

Kinetic Measurements Of Di- And Tripeptide And Peptidomimetic Drug Transport In Different Kidney Regions Using The Fluorescent Membrane Potential-Sensitive Dye, Dis-C3-(3)., Othman A. Alghamdi, Nicola King, Graham L. Jones, Pierre D.J. Moens
School of Biomedical Sciences
Tri- and dipeptides are transported in the kidney by PEPT1 and PEPT2 isoforms. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in transport kinetics between renal brush border (BBMV) and outer medulla (OMMV) membrane vesicles (where PEPT1 and PEPT2 are sequentially available) for a range of di- and tripeptides and peptidomimetic drugs. This was accomplished through the use of the potential-sensitive fluorescent dye 3,3'-dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide [DiS-C3-(3)]. BBMV and OMMV were prepared from the rat kidney using standard techniques. The presence of PEPT1 in BBMV and PEPT2 in OMMV was confirmed using Western blotting. Fluorescence changes were measured when extravesicular …
Personality, Life-History Traits And Pace Of Life In The Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus, Mariana Velasque Borges
Personality, Life-History Traits And Pace Of Life In The Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus, Mariana Velasque Borges
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Consistent between-individual differences in behaviour (termed “animal personality”) may be driven by adaptive differences in behavioural and physiological life-history traits. The Pace of Life Syndrome (POLS) hypothesis predicts a suit of correlations between those life-history traits along a fast-slow continuum. Therefore, according to the POLS, individuals that are fast-paced would be bolder, more explorative, show high growth-rates, lower immunity and a higher metabolic rate. A mechanistic link between such traits could also explain variation in cognitive traits, where bold individuals are faster at a given task but pay less attention to external cues and therefore make decisions less accurately. Here, …
The Effects Of A Variation In Noseband Tightness On The Rein Tension Of The Ridden Horse., Deborah Duke
The Effects Of A Variation In Noseband Tightness On The Rein Tension Of The Ridden Horse., Deborah Duke
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The noseband has been the topic of much recent attention from many within the equitation science field concerned with the welfare of the ridden horse. Nosebands have adapted over the years and are now used specifically for different purposes most being linked to increased control of the horse by either closing the mouth, placing additional pressure on the horse’s head in certain areas and preventing the horse avoid the pressure of the bit in their mouth. However, objective data do not exist on the consequences of tightening the noseband on the horse’s head. The possibilities are physical pain, skin and …

Applying Surrogate Species Presences To Correct Sample Bias In Species Distribution Models: A Case Study Using The Pilbara Population Of The Northern Quoll, Shaun W. Molloy, Robert A. Davis, Judy A. Dunlop, Eddie Van Etten
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The management of populations of threatened species requires the capacity to identify areas of high habitat value. We developed a high resolution species distribution model (SDM) for the endangered Pilbara northern quoll Dasyurus hallucatus, population using MaxEnt software and a combined suite of bioclimatic and landscape variables. Once common throughout much of northern Australia, this marsupial carnivore has recently declined throughout much of its former range and is listed as endangered by the IUCN. Other than the potential threats presented by climate change, and the invasive cane toad Rhinella marina (which has not yet arrived in the Pilbara). The …
The Ecology Of Sabellaria Spinulosa Reefs, Bryony Pearce
The Ecology Of Sabellaria Spinulosa Reefs, Bryony Pearce
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Reef habitats built by the tubiculous polychaete Sabellaria spinulosa have been identified as a habitat with significant conservation importance, based on their historic decline across Europe and the assumption that, like many other biogenic reef systems, S. spinulosa reefs enhance biodiversity. Despite the high conservation status of this habitat very little work has been undertaken to explore the role that S. spinulosa reefs play in marine ecosystems, or their sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance. Observations of the reproductive ecology and population dynamics of the reef building organism indicate that S. spinulosa exhibit life-history traits typically associated with r-strategists, indicating that this …
The Vulnerability Of Different Populations Of The Commercially-Important Shrimp Pandalus Borealis To Environmental Stress, Emilie Florence Hall
The Vulnerability Of Different Populations Of The Commercially-Important Shrimp Pandalus Borealis To Environmental Stress, Emilie Florence Hall
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The present study adopted an integrative approach to conduct a population comparison of vulnerability to environmental stress in a commercially important species of ectotherm. Specifically, I investigated how differing environmental conditions in native habitats may drive intra-species divergence and alter performance when conditions shift. This study used northern prawn (Pandalus borealis Krøyer 1838) populations with known morphological differences from two spatially proximate fjord sites differing in oxygen regime as a model system. The genetic population structure was analysed and whole organism, physiological, and metabolomic performance under hypoxia and thermal stress were assessed. Genetic analyses displayed no significant dissimilarities between P. …

The Microbiological Safety Of Fresh Produce In Lebanon- A Holistic “Farm-To-Fork Chain” Approach To Evaluate Food Safety, Compliance Levels And Underlying Risk Factors, Dima Faour-Klingbeil
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The consumption of unsafe fresh vegetables has been linked to an increasing number of outbreaks of human infections. In Lebanon, although raw vegetables are major constituents of the national cuisine, studies on the safety of fresh produce are scant. This research employed a holistic approach to identify the different stages of the food chain that contribute to the microbiological risks on fresh produce and the spreading of hazards. A thorough analysis of the institutional and regulatory framework and the socio-political environment showed that the safety of local fresh produce in Lebanon is at risk due to largely unregulated practices and …
Rumination, Realignment And Reflection: Who Is Really Teaching Health Education In Secondary Schools?, Donna Barwood
Rumination, Realignment And Reflection: Who Is Really Teaching Health Education In Secondary Schools?, Donna Barwood
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In Western Australia (WA), health education (HE) is timetabled as a separate, disciplinebased subject belonging to the health and physical education (HPE) learning area. Globally, this subject is identified as a key site to support and strengthen the health and wellbeing of children and young people. In WA, teachers from outside-of-the-field of HPE are commonly used to deliver HE. This situation is not exclusive to HE nor to WA, and in some circles is referred to as education’s dirty little secret. This mixed-methods study critically examined the role of the teacher in the delivery of HE with the purpose of …
