Improving Provider Compliance With Adult Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patient Care Guidelines In The Ambulatory Setting Through The Use Of Electronic Health Records, Nana Bernasko
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems have the ability to improve the quality of patient care, patient safety and provide benefits to providers and clinic practices. These systems can transform quality measurement and quality improvement methods, facilitate workflow, and track patients over time to ensure that they receive guideline-recommended, and evidence-based, care. Simply having an EHR system, however, may not be enough to improve the quality and safety of healthcare, especially if the system is not designed to include features specific to the treatment population. In terms of the complex care necessary to treat adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), …
Iron Metabolism Genes In Browsing And Grazing Rhinoceroses: Implications For Iron Overload Disorder, Lorien Salyer
Iron Metabolism Genes In Browsing And Grazing Rhinoceroses: Implications For Iron Overload Disorder, Lorien Salyer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Iron overload disorder is a serious condition that affects many animals of conservation interest, including rhinoceroses. Iron overload disorder is only found in browsing rhinos (African black, Diceros bicornis, and Sumatran, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) but not in grazing species (African white, Ceratotherium simum, and greater one-horned, Rhinoceros unicornis). Iron overload is connected with many of the other health issues seen in captive browsing rhinoceroses, so it is vitally important that the iron metabolism process is studied to improve the existing husbandry procedures of these critically endangered animals. The objective of this study was to characterize genes related to …

Local Wind Monitoring Matched With Lichen Pseudevernia Furfuracea (L.) Zopf Transplantation Technique To Assess The Environmental Impact Of A Biomass Power Plant, Lucio Lucadamo, Anna Corapi, Luana Gallo
Turkish Journal of Botany
The potential environmental impact of a biomass power plant (BPP) was evaluated by transplanting thalli of the lichen Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf in the surrounding area for 3 months. Four meteorological stations were placed at four sites to monitor local winds. At the end of the period, thalli were retrieved and electrical conductivity percentage (EC%), lipid peroxidation, lichen vitality, photosynthetic efficiency, chlorophylls, xanthophylls+carotenoids, OD435/OD415, and concentrations of some elements frequently emitted by BPPs were measured. A univariate-multivariate analysis revealed clusters of sites with dissimilar mean values of ecophysiological parameters. They were merged, when not significantly differing, and classified as different …
Bioremediation Of Lead Using Spore Surface Displayed Proteins, Sofia M. Diaco
Bioremediation Of Lead Using Spore Surface Displayed Proteins, Sofia M. Diaco
Honors Theses and Capstones
Lead is a toxic pollutant very harmful to human health since it accumulates in the body and affects the brain, liver, kidney, and bones. Fetuses can be exposed to lead during pregnancy, which can cause problems with learning later on in the baby’s life. The purpose of this project is to display a lead binding protein on bacterial spore surface for the bioremediation of lead from water. Spores from Bacillus subtilis are very robust and resistant to various harsh environments. Genetically fused to a spore surface protein, the displayed proteins demonstrate enhanced robustness and can be easily produced through sporulation …

Ligands Of Therapeutic Utility For The Liver X Receptors., Rajesh Komati, Dominick Spadoni, Shilong Zheng, Jayalakshmi Sridhar
Faculty and Staff Publications
Liver X receptors (LXRs) have been increasingly recognized as a potential therapeutic target to treat pathological conditions ranging from vascular and metabolic diseases, neurological degeneration, to cancers that are driven by lipid metabolism. Amidst intensifying efforts to discover ligands that act through LXRs to achieve the sought-after pharmacological outcomes, several lead compounds are already being tested in clinical trials for a variety of disease interventions. While more potent and selective LXR ligands continue to emerge from screening of small molecule libraries, rational design, and empirical medicinal chemistry approaches, challenges remain in minimizing undesirable effects of LXR activation on lipid metabolism. …

The Role Of The People’S Park In Promoting Conviviality And Quality Of Life In Increasingly Diverse Urban Neighbourhoods, María Beltrán Rodríguez, Madlen Simon

The Old, The Young, And The Dehydrated: Comparing Dehydration Tolerance Of ‘Gransden’ And ‘Villersexel’ Ecotypes Of Physcomitrella Patens, Katherine Bollinger
Honors Thesis
Plant tolerance of environmental stresses such as water deficit depends on genetic factors that can vary in response to the climate in which the plants have evolved. Such genetically distinct populations of a species that live in different regions are referred to as ecotypes. The purpose of this research was to test the dehydration tolerance of two ecotypes of the moss species Physcomitrella patens, one from Little Gransden, England, which has been used for decades for research, and another more recently cultured ecotype from Villersexel, France. Little Gransden receives nearly half the yearly precipitation of Villersexel, which could have led …

Measuring Actual Behaviors In Hci Research – A Call To Action And An Example, Parker A. Williams, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Joseph S. Valacich, Michael D. Byrd

There have been repeated calls for studies in behavioral science and human-computer interaction (HCI) research to measure participants’ actual behaviors. HCI research studies often use multiple constructs as perceived measures of behavior, which are captured using participants’ self-reports on surveys. Response biases, however, are a widespread threat to the validity of self-report measures. To mitigate this threat to validity, we propose that studies in HCI measure actual behaviors in appropriate contexts rather than solely perceptions. We report an example of using movements that reflect both actual behavior and behavioral changes measured within a health care IS usage context, specifically the …

Novel Application Of Untargeted Metabolomics To Diseases Of Neurosurgical Significance, Alex Yang Lu
Novel Application Of Untargeted Metabolomics To Diseases Of Neurosurgical Significance, Alex Yang Lu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Metabolomics, an emerging technique to study hundreds of small-molecule metabolites simultaneously, has been seldom applied to diseases of neurosurgical significance. We utilized metabolomics to explore two distinct questions: 1. to identify global metabolic changes and metabolite predictors of long-term outcome in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients, 2. to identify differential metabolites profiles of radiation necrosis vs. recurrent tumor of metastatic brain lesions post-Gamma Knife radiosurgery. The first study applied gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF) to cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from 15 high-grade aSAH patients (modified Fisher grades 3 and 4). Analysis was performed at two time points; metabolite levels …

History/Social Science:
The Evolution of Restraint in American Psychiatry
Author: Danilo Rojas-Velasquez
In psychiatry, restraint generally refers to direct methods such as mechanical restraints or the use of drugs. Despite psychiatrists’ best efforts to utilize restraint judiciously, many patients still view it as the field’s defining feature, especially on inpatient units with involuntary commitment, medications against will, and locked doors. This essay is an attempt to understand the pervasiveness of restraint in psychiatry. It uses changes in the practices of restraint to examine the growth of the field over time. To accomplish this, the paper identifies three distinct regimes of …
Predicting Response To Anti-Pd-1 Immunotherapy In Metastatic Melanoma, James William Smithy
Predicting Response To Anti-Pd-1 Immunotherapy In Metastatic Melanoma, James William Smithy
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Predictive biomarkers for antibodies against programmed death 1 (PD-1) remain a major unmet need in metastatic melanoma. Thus, we evaluated three alternative tissue- and blood based markers biomarkers for response to anti-PD-1 therapy. First, pre-treatment melanoma samples were assayed for expression of: 1) IRF-1, a PD-L1 transcription factor, as a proxy for a tumor’s capacity to express PD-L1, and 2) an immune activation panel consisting of CD3, Ki67, and Granzyme B to distinguish immune-active and immune-quiescent tumors. Additionally, we conducted pilot studies to determine the feasibility of measuring soluble PD-L1 in the plasma of cancer patients.
For tissue-based assays, samples …
Data Assimilation For Initialization Of Seasonal Forecasts, Magdalena A. Balmaseda
Data Assimilation For Initialization Of Seasonal Forecasts, Magdalena A. Balmaseda
Journal of Marine Research
This article reviews the requirements for a data assimilation system from the perspective of initializing seasonal forecasts. It provides a historical perspective of the developments in ocean data assimilation and ocean observing systems. It also discusses the differences between state estimation and initialization, and presents a brief assessment of different initialization strategies. The value of assimilating ocean data to estimate the ocean state and to initialize seasonal forecasts is demonstrated. However, it is also shown that the assumption of unbiased models in conventional data assimilation methods is not suitable for the production of long temporal records of ocean initial states. …

The Hipaa Privacy Rule And The Eu Gdpr: Illustrative Comparisons, Stacey A. Tovino
Scholarly Works
In this Article, Professor Tovino compares and contrasts three illustrative concepts and rights in the Privacy Rule and/or the GDPR, including the concepts of authorization and consent, the rights of amendment and rectification, and the right to erasure. Identified similarities reflect the core values of HHS and the EU with respect to maintaining the confidentiality and privacy of personal data and protected health information, respectively. Identified differences reflect the Privacy Rule's original, narrow focus on health industry participants and individually identifiable health information compared to the GDPR's broad focus on data controllers and personal data. Other differences reflect, perhaps, the …

The Use And Abuse Of Mutual-Support Programs In Drug Courts, Sara Gordon
Scholarly Works
There is a large gap between what we know about the disease of addiction and its appropriate treatment, and the treatment received by individuals who are ordered into treatment as a condition of participation in drug court. Most medical professionals are not appropriately trained about addiction and most addiction treatment providers do not have the education and training necessary to provide appropriate evidence-based services to individuals who are referred by drug courts for addiction treatment. This disconnect between our understanding of addiction and available addiction treatment has wide-reaching impact for individuals who attempt to receive medical care for addiction in …

Through The Lens Of The Reviewer: Information Literacy, An Lms, And Peer Review, Wendi M. Kappers
Publications
This research paper describes the use of peer review to improve information literacy. Peer-reviewed assignments for learning have been seen favorably within the literature. The articulated benefits range from students feeling more engaged, having expressed less anxiety, or found to be better equipped to perform in unfamiliar areas outside their current learning environments. However, minimal research examines the benefits specifically for the feedback provider (reviewer) when a more modern tool, such as the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) is used. During the fall 2015 semester, a study was conducted to examine the peer review process from the vantage point of …
