Few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) account for environmental exposures, like smoking, potentially impacting the overall trait variance when investigating the genetic contribution to obesity-related traits. Here, we use GWAS data from 51,080 current smokers and 190,178 nonsmokers (87% European descent) to identify loci influencing BMI and central adiposity, measured as waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio both adjusted for BMI. We identify 23 novel genetic loci, and 9 loci with convincing evidence of gene-smoking interaction (GxSMK) on obesity-related traits. We show consistent direction of effect for all identified loci and significance for 18 novel and for 5 interaction loci in an …

A Multiple Case Narrative Examining The Experiences Of Alumni Of A Minority Research And Training Program, Gretchen Burton

Faculty Publications

The implementation of minority research and training (MRT) programs at the post secondary level has risen to close the educational achievement gap and build undergraduate pathways to generate a highly skilled and diverse STEM pool. Although the numbers of advanced science related degrees have slowly increased over the past decade, partially due to the utilization of MRT programs, this increase has not been adequate to establish an impactful representation in either academic or industry research careers. Numerous studies identify various support interventions influencing positive outcomes among MRT participants achieving graduate degrees. However, majority of the studies utilize quantitative or a …

Posterior Estimates Of Dynamic Constants In Hiv Transmission Modeling, Yingqing Chen, Renee Dale, Hongyu He, Quoc Anh T. Le Jan 2017

Posterior Estimates Of Dynamic Constants In Hiv Transmission Modeling, Yingqing Chen, Renee Dale, Hongyu He, Quoc Anh T. Le

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we construct a linear differential system in both continuous time and discrete time to model HIV transmission on the population level. The main question is the determination of parameters based on the posterior information obtained from statistical analysis of the HIV population. We call these parameters dynamic constants in the sense that these constants determine the behavior of the system in various models. There is a long history of using linear or nonlinear dynamic systems to study the HIV population dynamics or other infectious diseases. Nevertheless, the question of determining the dynamic constants in the system has …

Pbwt: Achieving Succinct Data Structures For Parameterized Pattern Matching And Related Problems, Arnab Ganguly, Rahul Shah, Sharma V. Thankachan

Faculty Publications

The fields of succinct data structures and compressed text indexing have seen quite a bit of progress over the last two decades. An important achievement, primarily using techniques based on the Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT), was obtaining the full functionality of the suffix tree in the optimal number of bits. A crucial property that allows the use of BWT for designing compressed indexes is order-preserving suffix links. Specifically, the relative order between two suffixes in the subtree of an internal node is same as that of the suffixes obtained by truncating the furst character of the two suffixes. Unfortunately, in many …

The Microbiome Of Neotropical Ticks Parasitizing On Passerine Migratory Birds, Khemraj Budachetri, Jaclyn Williams, Nabanita Mukherjee, Michael Sellers, Shahid Karim

Faculty Publications

Seasonal migration of passerine birds between temperate North America and tropical Central and South America is an ecological phenomenon. Migration of birds has been associated with the introduction of ectoparasites like ticks or tick-borne pathogens across the avian migration routes. In this study, the microbial diversity was determined in the ticks and bird DNA samples using 454 pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Tick DNA samples showed the dominance of genera Lactococcus, Francisella, Raoultella, Wolbachiaand Rickettsia across all the ticks, but birds DNA did not share common microbial diversity with ticks. Furthermore, “Candidatus Rickettsia amblyommii” …

Brazil generates an annual demand for more than 2.83 million tons of phosphate fertilizers. Part of this is due to low P use efficiency (PUE) by plants, particularly in current maize cultivars. Thus, the aim of this study was to create indexes that allow accurate selection of maize genotypes with high PUE under conditions of either low or high P availability. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse (20°45'14"S; 42°52'53"W) at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa in October 2010. We evaluated 39 experimental hybrid combinations and 14 maize inbred lines with divergent PUE under two conditions of P availability. The …

An Integrated System For Modeling Tree And Stand Survival, Quang V. Cao Jan 2017

An Integrated System For Modeling Tree And Stand Survival, Quang V. Cao

Faculty Publications

Traditionally, separate models have been used to predict the number of trees per unit area (stand-level survival) and the survival probability of an individual tree (tree-level survival) at a certain age. This study investigated the development of integrated systems in which survival models at different levels of resolution are related in a mathematical structure. Two approaches for modeling tree and stand survival were considered: deriving a stand-level survival model from a tree-level survival model (approach 1) and deriving a tree survival model from a stand survival model (approach 2). Both approaches rely on finding a tree diameter that yields a …

Modeling Tree Mortality In Relation To Climate, Initial Planting Density, And Competition In Chinese Fir Plantations Using A Bayesian Logistic Multilevel Method, Xiongqing Zhang, Quang V. Cao, Aiguo Duan, Jianguo Zhang

Faculty Publications

Tree mortality models are important tools for simulating forest dynamic processes, and logistic regression is widely used for modeling tree mortality. However, most of the mortality models that have been developed generally ignore the hierarchical structure. In this study, Bayesian logistic multilevel mortality models were developed with the independent variables of initial planting density, competition, site index, and climate factors in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) plantations in southern China. The results showed that a Bayesian three-level model was best for describing tree mortality data with multiple sources of unobserved heterogeneity compared to fixed-effects and two-level models. The variance …

Development Of An Artificial Neural Network Model To Predict Subgrade Resilient Modulus From Continuous Deflection Testing, Omar Elbagalati, Mostafa A. Elseifi, Kevin Gaspard, Zhongjie Zhang

Faculty Publications

The subgrade resilient modulus is an important parameter in pavement analysis and design. However, available non-destructive testing devices such as the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) have limitations that prevent their widespread use at the network level. This study describes the development of a model that utilizes the rolling wheel deflectometer (RWD) measurements to predict the subgrade resilient modulus at the network level for flexible pavements. Measurements ofRWDand FWD obtained from a testing program conducted in Louisiana were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) based model. The ANN model was validated using data from a testing program independently conducted …

Understanding The Uterine Environment In Early Pregnancy In Cattle: How Have The Omics Enhanced Our Knowledge?, Constantine A. Simintiras, Niamh Forde

Faculty Publications

Early pregnancy loss in cattle can be attributed to a myriad of sources. One key factor that can influence early pregnancy success or loss is the influence and interactions between the maternal environment and the developing embryo/conceptus. Recent advances in high-throughput 'omics' technologies coupled with improved bioinformatics capabilities represent a promising avenue for enhancing our understanding of fundamental developmental events - which would have direct agricultural, veterinary, and economic benefits. Thusly this review revolves around recent applications of advanced transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses within a bovine uterine secretomic and interactomic context, with an overriding aim to highlight the advantages …

Modelling Aspects Of Oviduct Fluid Formation In Vitro, Constantine A. Simintiras, Thomas Fröhlich, Thozhukat Sathyapalan, Georg J. Arnold, Susanne E. Ulbrich, Henry J. Leese, Roger G. Sturmey

Faculty Publications

Oviduct fluid is the microenvironment that supports early reproductive processes including fertilisation, embryo cleavage and genome activation. However, the composition and regulation of this critical environment remain rather poorly defined. This study uses an in vitro preparation of the bovine oviduct epithelium to investigate the formation and composition of in vitro-derived oviduct fluid (ivDOF) within a controlled environment. We confirm the presence of oviduct-specific glycoprotein 1 in ivDOF and show that the amino acid and carbohydrate content resembles that of previously reported in vivo data. In parallel, using a different culture system, a panel of oviduct epithelial solute carrier genes …

Dual Roles Of Oxidative Stress In Metal Carcinogenesis, Jie Xu, James T.F. Wise, Lei Wang, Kortney Schumann, Zhuo Zhang, Xianglin Shi

Faculty Publications

It has been well established that environmental and occupational exposure to heavy metal causes cancer in several organs. Although the exact mechanism of heavy metal carcinogenesis remains elusive, metal-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential. ROS can play two roles in metal carcinogenesis; two stages in the process of metal carcinogenesis differ in the amounts of ROS activating a dual redox-mediated mechanism. In the early stage of metal carcinogenesis, ROS acts in an oncogenic role. However, in the late stage of metal carcinogenesis, ROS plays an antioncogenic role. Similarly, NF-E2–related factor 2 (Nrf2) also has two different roles, which makes …

Pretreatment, Enzymatic Hydrolysis, And Fermentation To Ethanol Using A Lignocellulosic Feedstock And Subsequent Recovery Of A Value Added Co-Product: Pure Crystalline Cellulose, Ryan J. Bouza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As more demand for alternatives to petroleum and the industrial world’s love of cars increase, cellulosic ethanol will become more important. The ethanol can, of course, be used in the transportation fuel sector, but there is also a potential for co-products to be developed out of the cellulose to ethanol process. Some of these co-products have the potential to replace current petrol products. These co-products may provide the extra revenue generation needed for further investment and development of this industry. This would not only provide better energy independence, but in the United States, it would better satisfy the cellulosic ethanol …

Mitigating Risks Of Ochratoxin A Contamination In Oats, Bandana Dhungana Jan 2017

Mitigating Risks Of Ochratoxin A Contamination In Oats, Bandana Dhungana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a toxic metabolite produced by several species of fungal genera Penicillium and Aspergillus. The major OTA producer in temperate regions (i.e. U.S., Canada, Europe) is Penicillium verrucosum. Oat (Avena sativa), like any other cereal grain, can be contaminated with OTA when storage conditions are favorable for fungal growth. The presence of OTA exceeding the European Union maximum limit of 3 ppb in processed food has been reported in some samples of oat-based breakfast cereals from the US. The use of oat genotypes with limited OTA accumulation would be an effective way to …

University Lake, a shallow, artificial, urban lake adjacent to the campus of Louisiana State University, has a long history of water quality problems, including algal blooms, fish kills, and high concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria. Periodic dredging of the lake is necessary to prevent its return to swampland. This study was undertaken to elucidate the roles of allochthonous versus autochthonous nutrients as causes of water quality problems in the lake, with the expectation that this information would help identify strategies for lake restoration. Photosynthetic rates and concentrations of inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton pigments were measured over a period of one …

Deep Eutectic Solvents Synthesis, Characterization And Applications In Pretreatment Of Lignocellulosic Biomass, Ganesh Degam Jan 2017

Deep Eutectic Solvents Synthesis, Characterization And Applications In Pretreatment Of Lignocellulosic Biomass, Ganesh Degam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been an increased interest in green solvents and biofuels with the growing environmental awareness across the globe. Conventional methods of biofuel production involve the use of large quantities of molecular solvents and ionic liquids (ILs), but they have the drawbacks of high vapor pressure (organic solvents), toxicity, and recyclability in terms of a sustainability point of view. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as green alternatives to molecular solvents and ionic liquids (ILs). They are defined as eutectic mixtures formed between quaternary ammonium, phosphonium or sulfonium salts and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) with the freezing temperature lower …
