Influence Of The Parent-Child Relationship Quality On Adhd And Odd Symptom Severity, Elaine A.T. Gilbert
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the extent to which the Attachment and Relationship Frustration subscales are associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptom severity. There is minimal research examining attachment in relation to ADHD symptomology and only a few studies that consider ODD comorbidity in conjunction to ADHD and attachment. The present study builds upon previous research and considers the relationship between parent report of Attachment and Relationship Frustration, as measured by the PRQ, and ADHD as well as ODD symptoms. Archival data from 87 children evaluated for ADHD was used for the study. Data …
Cloning And Characterization Of A Hypothetical Exported Protein, Sas0347, From Community-Associated Staphylococcus Aureus, Yanwen Liu
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus is an important and dangerous human and animal pathogen that causes a wide variety of diseases. The organism is a significant cause of nosocomial infections, as well as community-associated diseases due to a combination of toxin-mediated virulence, invasiveness, and antibiotic resistance. Resistance to multiple antibiotics, particularly to penicillin and methicillin, is common in S. aureus and makes treatment especially difficult. Recently, the current threat from this pathogen is the pandemic spread of community associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) which have become the most frequent causes of skin and soft-tissue infections in the community and are replacing traditional hospital …
Examining The Hormonal Pleiotropy Hypothesis: Malayization Along An Elevational Gradient Can Be Associated With Behavioral, Hormonal And Immunological Differences In Lizards, Ryan Seddon
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hormonal pleiotropy describes a suite of hormonally-linked traits. Such hormonal mediation may facilitate or constrain adaptive evolution of individual traits in the suite. Melanization, regulated in part by hormonal signals, can be tightly linked to non-color traits such as aggression, hormones, and immunity. While most studies examine within-population variation, I studied correlates of melanization, comparing both between- and within-population differences of adult male western fence lizards, Sceloporus occidentalis . I compared multiple high- and low-elevation populations in California, where populations are increasingly darker at higher elevations. I examined variation in 1) agonistic behavior of male lizards in response to staged …

© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The heart-specific isoform of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB2) is an important regulator of glycolytic flux in cardiac cells. Here, we present the crystal structures of two PFKFB2 orthologues, human and bovine, at resolutions of 2.0 and 1.8 Å, respectively. Citrate, a TCA cycle intermediate and well-known inhibitor of PFKFB2, co-crystallized in the 2-kinase domains of both orthologues, occupying the fructose-6-phosphate binding-site and extending into the γ-phosphate binding pocket of ATP. This steric and electrostatic occlusion of the γ-phosphate site by citrate proved highly consequential to the binding of co-complexed ATP analogues. The bovine structure, which co-crystallized with …

More and more ecologists have started to resurvey communities sampled in earlier decades to determine long-term shifts in community composition and infer the likely drivers of the ecological changes observed. However, to assess the relative importance of and interactions among multiple drivers, joint analyses of resurvey data from many regions spanning large environmental gradients are needed. In this article, we illustrate how combining resurvey data from multiple regions can increase the likelihood of driver orthogonality within the design and show that repeatedly surveying across multiple regions provides higher representativeness and comprehensiveness, allowing us to answer more completely a broader range …

© The Author 2017. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular disease that predominantly affects boys as a result of mutation(s) in the dystrophin gene. DMD is characterized by musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary complications, resulting in shorter life-span. Boys afflicted by DMD typically exhibit symptoms within 3-5 years of age and declining physical functions before attaining puberty. We hypothesized that rapidly deteriorating health of pre-pubertal boys with DMD could be due to diminished anabolic actions of androgens in muscle, and that intervention with an androgen receptor (AR) agonist will reverse musculoskeletal complications and extend survival. While castration of dystrophin and utrophin …

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. MitoNEET, a primary target of type II diabetes drug pioglitazone, has an essential role in regulating energy metabolism, iron homeostasis, and production of reactive oxygen species in mitochondria. Structurally, mitoNEET is anchored to the mitochondrial outer membrane via its N-terminal transmembrane α-helix. The C-terminal cytosolic domain of mitoNEET hosts a redox active [2Fe-2S] cluster via three cysteine and one histidine residues. Here we report that the reduced flavin nucleotides can rapidly reduce the mitoNEET [2Fe-2S] clusters under anaerobic or aerobic conditions. In the presence of NADH and flavin reductase, 1 molecule of flavin nucleotide is sufficient …

© The Author(s) 2017. National calls to improve the performance and persistence of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in science have led to a surge of research on inclusive, evidence-based teaching methods. Less work has revealed the effects of diversity support initiatives that improve campus climate and community cohesion. Here, we examine whether participation in the Biology Scholars Program (BSP) at Cornell University-a diversity support program at a prominent university-affects underrepresented racial minority (URM) student performance. We found that BSP participants are less academically prepared when they enter college but typically have GPAs similar to those of their non-BSP counterparts …

© Copyright 2017 by the American Society of Plant Taxonomists. Species delimitation in Pinaceae is often challenged by limited morphological differentiation and introgression. In Tsuga (hemlocks), species delimitation has been most challenging among northeastern Asian taxa, where the species are weakly marked morphologically and range in number from three to five in previous studies. Two low-copy nuclear four-coumarase-ligase (4CL) genes andmorphology strongly support a clade of the Japanese endemic T. diversifolia and T. Sieboldii from Japan and Ulleung island (Ulleungdo) in Korea. This clade is here referred to as the oceanic hemlocks. 4CL strongly supports a sister-group relationship of the …

© the Owner Societies 2017. Aggregation behavior of cyclic polypeptoids bearing zwitterionic end-groups in methanol has been studied using a combination of experimental and simulation techniques. The data from SANS and cryo-TEM indicate that the solution contains small clusters of these cyclic polypeptoids, ranging from a single polypeptoid chain to small oligomers, while the linear counterpart shows no cluster formation. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the driving force for this clustering behavior is due to the interplay between the effective repulsion due to the solvation of the dipoles formed by the charged end-groups in each polypeptoid chain and the …

© 2019 Hogrefe. Pomegranate juice with a high content of polyphenols, pomegranate extract, ellagic acid, and urolithin A, have anti-oxidant and anti-obesity effects in humans. Pomegranate juice extends lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) (n = 6) compared to the control group in each treatment, lifespan was increased by pomegranate juice in wild type (N2, 56 %, P < 0.001) and daf-16 mutant (daf-16(mgDf50)I) (18 %, P = 0.00012), by pomegranate extract in N2 (28 %, P = 0.00004) and in daf-16(mgDf50)I (10 %, P < 0.05), or by ellagic acid (11 %, P < 0.05). Pomegranate juice reduced intestinal fat deposition (IFD) in C. elegans (n = 10) N2 (–68 %, P = 0.0003) or in the daf-16(mgDf50)I (–33 %, P = 0.0034). The intestinal fat deposition was increased by pomegranate extract in N2 (137 %, P < 0.0138) and in daf-16(mgDf50)I (26 %, P = 0.0225), by ellagic acid in N2 (66 %, P < 0.0001) and in daf-16(mgDf50)I (74 %, P < 0.0001), or by urolithin A in N2 (57 %, P = 0.0039) and in daf-16(mgDf50)I (43 %, P = 0.0001). These effects were partially mediated by the daf-16 pathway. The data may offer insights to human aging and obesity due to homology with C. elegans.

© 2017 Published by NRC Research Press. The genus Plethodon is the most species-rich salamander genus in North America, and nearly half of its species face an uncertain future. It is also one of the most diverse families in terms of genome sizes, which range from 1C = 18.2 to 69.3 pg, or 5-20 times larger than the human genome. Large genome size in salamanders results in part from accumulation of transposable elements and is associated with various developmental and physiological traits. However, genome sizes have been reported for only 25% of the species of Plethodon (14 of 55). We …

The Failure Of Federal Biotechnology Regulation, Alison Peck
The Failure Of Federal Biotechnology Regulation, Alison Peck
Valparaiso University Law Review
The recent court case and state ballot measures regarding mandatory labels for Genetically Modified Organisms (“GMOs”) suggest the need for a deeper conversation about the federal framework for regulating biotechnology. What is it about GMOs that consumers feel they have the “right to know?” Why has a generation of federal biotechnology regulation failed to satisfy consumer concerns? Are those concerns irrational, or is the regulatory structure inadequate? This Article argues that many consumer concerns underlying the labeling movement raise important scientific and extra- scientific questions that have been apparent since the advent of the technology in the 1980s. Moreover, these …

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in …
Devising From A Distance: A Study Of The Difference In Process, Composition, And Audience Response Between In-Person And Digitally-Mediated Choreographic Collaborations, Kathryn Butler
Honors Theses
This paper argues that dance devising shares a value system with that of the digital age, justifying the use of a virtual choreographic site to facilitate geographically distributed collaborations. The presence of technology in our social lives, working environments, and creative practices is steadily increasing. Before we passively let technology digitize and make virtual the choreographic process, or before we expedite this seemingly inevitable trajectory, we need to know what the consequences and opportunities might be. Through use of a controlled empirical investigation, this study analyzed the process experience, composition, and post-performance audience response between in-person and remote choreographic collaborations. …

The rapid ocean warming observed in and predicted for the Gulf of Maine (GoM) raises uncertainties in the future distribution of American lobster (Homarus americanus). The location of lobsters is crucial to the long-term sustainability as well as management of Maine lobster fishery. This study provides a literature review of lobsters’ thermal preferences in the summer lobstering season and analyzes high-resolution sea surface temperature data in Geographic Information System in order to predict the changes in thermal habitats in the GoM under different climate change scenarios. The results show a projected decrease in cooler thermal habitats (11-15 °C) …

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are creative, unpredictable, independent, autonomous, rational, evolving, capable of data collection, communicative, efficient, accurate, and have free choice among alternatives. Similar to humans, AI systems can autonomously create and generate creative works. The use of AI systems in the production of works, either for personal or manufacturing purposes, has become common in the 3A era of automated, autonomous, and advanced technology. Despite this progress, there is a deep and common concern in modern society that AI technology will become uncontrollable. There is therefore a call for social and legal tools for controlling AI systems’ functions and …

Examining Interactions Between Opsins And Carotenoid Biosynthetic Proteins In Halophilic Archaea, Alexandru M. Plesa
Honors Theses
Organisms have evolved numerous specialized molecules for constantly responding to environmental changes. Examples of such molecules are the light-driven proton-pump rhodopsins, such as bacteriorhodopsin (BR) and cruxrhodopsin (cR), and the carotenoid pigments, such as retinal and bacterioruberin. In halophilic Archaea, retinal can covalently bind bacterioopsin (BO) and cruxopsin (CO) to form the corresponding protein complexes, and its biosynthesis is indirectly controlled by the activity of the lycopene elongase (Lye) enzyme, which converts lycopene, a retinal precursor, to a form of bacterioruberin. Interestingly, opsins were shown to inhibit the activity of Lye, thereby promoting retinal biosynthesis and indirectly regulating the apoprotein-cofactor …
