Speech perception is dependent upon the ability to map the sensory features of a speech signal onto the perceptual features which make up language (i.e., phonemes). A great deal of research over the past six decades has focused on how variability across talkers influences speech processing. Listeners are required to normalize the acoustic variability across talkers by continuously updating the mapping from the acoustic signal to phonetic representations. As such, processing speech from multiple talkers is cognitively more demanding than listening to a single talker. OBJECTIVE:

To develop sex-specific and age-specific normative values for the nine Eurofit tests in European children and adolescents aged 9-17 years.

METHODS:

A systematic review was undertaken to identify papers that explicitly reported descriptive results for at least one of nine Eurofit tests (measuring balance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, muscular power, flexibility, speed, speed-agility and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)) on children and adolescents. Data were included on apparently healthy (free from known disease/injury) children and adolescents aged 9-17 years. A new troglobitic harvestman, Relictopiolus galadriel gen. nov et sp. nov., is described from Olhos d’Água cave, Itacarambi, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Morphological characters, including male genitalia and exomorphology, suggest that this species belongs to the family Kimulidae, and it appears to share the greatest similarities with Tegipiolus pachypus. Bayesian inference analyses of a molecular dataset strongly support the inclusion of this species in Kimulidae and confirm the hypothesized sister-group relationship between R. galadriel and T. pachypus. A time calibrated phylogeny indicates that these sister-taxa diverged from a common ancestor approximately 40 Mya, during the Paleogene. The current range of …

Policymakers generally agree that if a child cannot live safely with her parents, then the child should be placed expeditiously with a relative. Alaska’s current system for evaluating relative caregivers is overly complicated, creating unnecessary barriers for relatives and increasing the risk of mistakenly denying placement with relatives. This Article argues that Alaska should adopt a three-step approach to achieve better outcomes based on the American Bar Association’s model licensing standards, which are narrowly tailored to evaluate whether a child should be placed with a relative. Using the Attribution and the Experiential Learning Theory seated within Constructivism, this study examined the effect of the poverty simulation, Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS), on empathetic attitude toward those who experience poverty. 778 participants represented the fields of education, health care, and social work. Measures of immediate and sustained empathetic attitude were conducted using the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) (Jolliffe & Farrington, 2006). Findings indicate that there is immediate empathetic attitude change for the participants, but no sustained empathetic attitude change. In this work we experimentally demonstrate (a) that the holding strength of universal jamming grippers increases as a function of the jamming pressure to greater than three atmospheres, and (b) that jamming grippers can be used for deep sea grasping tasks in ambient pressures exceeding one hundred atmospheres, where such high jamming pressures can be readily achieved. Laboratory experiments in a pressurized, water filled test cell are used to measure the holding force of a 'universal' style jamming gripper as a function of the pressure difference between internal membrane pressure and ambient pressure. Lactate is both a metabolite of glycolysis, and a component of several signaling pathways. Although recent studies indicate that lactate is a critical regulator of cancer development, very little is known about lactate metabolism in the context of metastatic cancer. Epithelial-to mesenchymal transition (EMT) promotes metastasis by inducing invasive properties in epithelial tumors. To determine whether EMT induces metabolic alterations, we have studied two epithelial breast cancer cell lines and their respective EMT-induced mesenchymal progeny for changes in lactate metabolism. Metabolic analysis revealed that EMT induced an enhanced glycolytic profile in mesenchymal breast cancer cells. In contrast, epithelial breast cancer …

This study was aimed to isolate and identify lactobacillus bacteria from some dairy products, antibiotic susceptibility and supernatants antimicrobial activity was tested, then detection for genes encoded to produce bacteriocins. morphological, microscopically and biochemical tests results showed that eight isolates were lactobacillus, antibiotic susceptibility test showed that most Lactobacillus isolates appeared multi resistant to more than one of antibiotics and sensitive to chloramphenicol while several of them are sensitive to others antibiotics , also results showed varying inhibitory effect of all Lactobacillus isolates supernatants in growth of pathogenic bacteria tastes, the highest inhibition zone that observed was against Escherichia coli …

The Annual Killifish, Austrofundulus limnaeus, survives the seasonal drying of their pond habitat in the form of embryos entering diapause midway through development. The diapause trajectory is one of two developmental phenotypes. Alternatively, individuals can "escape" entry into diapause and develop continuously until hatching. The alternative phenotypes of A. limnaeus are a form of developmental plasticity that provides this species with a physiological adaption for surviving stressful environments. This article assesses whether the United States should adopt an institutional process similar to Europe’s through giving non-profit organizations a role in shaping food law and corporate responsibility. Part I provides a comparative analysis of genetically engineered product regulations in the US and the EU. Part II explains how the institutional processes of the US and the EU led to the varying regulations. Part III asserts that the United States should change its institutional process through allowing public universities and private colleges to influence food law and corporate responsibility.

The mudstones of the Western Australian Gogo Formation harbour numerous carbonate concretions which often contain preserved fossils of Lagerstätte-like quality. These are especially notable in places where the mudstone has eroded, giving way to nodule fields, which afford valuable paleobiological records. It is, however, a challenge to determine their paleoenvironmental context. Here, we analysed concretions from a core drilled in the Canning Basin Gogo Formation. At two different depths, concretions were compared to the surrounding mudstone found at the same depth. Electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy showed that the concretions were carbonate-rich and contained detrital fragments. Biomarker data showed that …

Sedation is widely used for auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing for infants or young children who are unable to sleep or remain adequately quiet for testing. Because chloral hydrate is no longer readily available, dexmedetomidine has been proposed as an alternative medicinal agent to achieve moderate levels of sedation without risk of respiratory depression. The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine in terms of the completeness of the audiologic data obtained in achieving moderate levels of sedation for auditory brainstem response testing. Seventy captive adult female wasps of the eumenid genera Ancistrocerus and Euodynerus were observed to feed on multiple prey items. It was shown experimentally that E. foraminatus females that fed on prey had significantly larger egg volumes than adult wasps deprived of prey.

Mating sequences were analyzed for six species of stink bugs using video- tapes. The results consisted of qualitative descriptions of the precopulatory activities of the pairs and quantitative analyses of the number and direction of mating sequences, including the latency to and duration of copulatory lock. It was possible to quantitatively characterize each of the six species tested. In addition, certain infrequent behavior patterns, e.g., head butts, were observed for some species and not others. We studied the epigeal and flight activity of Coleoptera in a commercial raspberry plantation and adjacent sites in southern Quebec, from 1987-1989. In this first paper, we present the results for the Nitidulidae. Pitfall traps yielded 521 beetles representing 15 species; Glischrochilus quadrisignatus represented 86% of catches in raspberry rows (old and young plants), and Epuraea spp. were the most abundant nitidulids in a woods-field boundary and in a pine woods. Nitidulids in flight interception traps comprised 2179 individuals of 28 species; Meligethes nigrescens was the most abundant species in open sites around the raspberry plantation, while Epuraea avara and …
