Polarizing Procedures: Transsexual Inmates, Sex Reassignment Surgery, And The Eighth Amendment, 50 J. Marshall L. Rev. 747 (2017), Jameson Rammell
UIC Law Review
This article argues that at present, there is not sufficient certainty within the medical and scientific communities to definitively state that SRS is medically necessary for transsexual individuals, or that it effectively relieves the negative symptoms often associated with gender dysphoria. Because the Supreme Court has held that the Eighth Amendment does not require prison officials to provide the most cutting-edge treatments available, but only an adequate level of treatment, it is not a violation of the Eighth Amendment to deny a transsexual inmate’s request for SRS. Part I explores the medical and scientific communities’ current understanding of gender dysphoria, …
Genetics Of Chemotherapy Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Charles Li
Genetics Of Chemotherapy Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Charles Li
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) encompasses a wide range of treatment responses, however there are no predictive biomarkers approved for clinical use to target therapy. With a novel exome analysis method, we discovered that the overall proportion of the homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes affected by structural variation can accurately predict both positive and negative chemotherapy response prior to initiation of therapy in the large majority of patients in our cohort.
We analyzed exome sequences of unpaired tumor samples, collected prior to ACT chemotherapy, in 17 TNBC patients who exhibit complete pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (pCR) and 15 patients …
Assessing Hiv-Related Outcomes Among Key Populations Accessing Community-Based Test And Start Services In Nigeria, Project Soar
Assessing Hiv-Related Outcomes Among Key Populations Accessing Community-Based Test And Start Services In Nigeria, Project Soar
HIV and AIDS
This activity brief describes a research study Project SOAR is conducting to better understand how to use existing key population community platforms in Nigeria to expand access to HIV treatment, the cost of such care provided outside of clinical health facilities, and the extent to which false positive misclassification may occur in outreach settings. Given the global “treat all” emphasis and the need to effectively scale up test and start services and minimize misclassification rates, these findings will be important in expanding timely antiretroviral treatment coverage in vulnerable communities in Nigeria and elsewhere.
Distribution Patterns Of Kielmeyera (Calophyllaceae): The Rio Doce Basin Emerges As A Confluent Area Between The Northern And Southern Atlantic Forest, Amanda Pricilla Batista Santos, Cássia Bitencourt, Alessandro Rapini
Neotropical Biodiversity
The Atlantic Forest is one of the most diverse and threatened tropical forests in the world, and the Rio Doce valley seems to represent a limit between biotas from its southern and northern portions. In the present study, we investigated the distribution of Kielmeyera (Calophyllaceae), a woody, typically wind-dispersed genus, with a high endemism rate in the Atlantic Forest. The 351 specimens analysed, representing 21 of 22 species of Kielmeyera from the Atlantic Forest, pointed to a complete dissimilarity between species composition in the southern (Rio de Janeiro state) and northern (Bahia state) portions of the forest. However, the Rio …
Vocalization Of Scinax Haddadorum (Anura: Hylidae), With Further Notes On The Vocalization Of The Morphologically Similar Scinax Rupestris, Davi Lee Bang, Thiago Ribeiro De Carvalho, Felipe Silva De Andrade, Isabelle Aquemi Haga, Cyro De Sousa Bernardes, Ariovaldo Antonio Giaretta
Vocalization Of Scinax Haddadorum (Anura: Hylidae), With Further Notes On The Vocalization Of The Morphologically Similar Scinax Rupestris, Davi Lee Bang, Thiago Ribeiro De Carvalho, Felipe Silva De Andrade, Isabelle Aquemi Haga, Cyro De Sousa Bernardes, Ariovaldo Antonio Giaretta
Neotropical Biodiversity
We describe for the first time the vocalization of Scinax haddadorum from its type locality. We also aim to establish an acoustic diagnosis for this species in comparison with the morphologically similar Scinax rupestris, for which we also describe additional note types of its vocalization that were not previously reported. The advertisement call of S. haddadorum consists of a single type of relatively short (<200 ms on average), multipulsed note and the call dominant frequency is restricted mostly to low frequency values (ca. 1.5 kHz), whereas the advertisement call of S. rupestris consists of a single type of relatively long (>450 ms on average), multipulsed note, and the call dominant frequency may be contained within two distinct frequency bands. Advertisement calls across Scinax species exhibit distinctive patterns both in time and frequency structures that should …200>
Investigating Medicinally Important Portein-Protein And Protein-Ligand Interactions : A Computational Approach, Cooper Ashley Taylor
Investigating Medicinally Important Portein-Protein And Protein-Ligand Interactions : A Computational Approach, Cooper Ashley Taylor
Honors Theses
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and computational chemistry allow for an atomistic understanding of protein-protein and protein-ligand binding motifs. Through the use of MD, medicinally relevant complexes can be examined in detail unattainable by experimental methods. Within this work, systems pertinent to both Alzheimer’s Disease and HIV-1 are probed and thoroughly sampled to help elucidate potential therapeutic pathways. We used molecular dynamics and free energy estimations to gauge the affinity for the binary and ternary complexes of KLC1, APP and JIP1, three proteins all believed to be involved in the propagation of Alzheimer’s Disease. Two areas of thought exist suggesting that …

Identity And Personhood: Advocating For The Abolishment Of Closed Adoption Records Laws, Jessica Colin-Greene
Identity And Personhood: Advocating For The Abolishment Of Closed Adoption Records Laws, Jessica Colin-Greene
Connecticut Law Review
Adoptees are denied access to identifying information about their biological heritage in myriad ways. Accessing adoption records, however, is critical to the deeply personal identity formation processes of many adopted persons. This Note urges the abolishment of closed adoption records laws by addressing social science and constitutional arguments in support of unfettered access to adoptees who wish to obtain identifying information about their natural origins. This Note highlights the identity struggles faced by many adoptees who lack access to this information, and suggests an expanded understanding of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to include the right of …
Zika And The Failure To Act Under The Police Power, Jacqueline Fox
Zika And The Failure To Act Under The Police Power, Jacqueline Fox
Connecticut Law Review
Zika is a mosquito-borne and sexually transmitted disease that is a dangerous threat to pregnant women, causing catastrophic birth defects in a large percentage of fetuses when their mothers become infected while pregnant. It raises numerous issues related to abortion, birth control, poverty, and women's control over their procreative choices. While the United States received ample warning from January 2016 onward that it was at risk of local transmission of this virus and public health officials at all levels generally behaved properly, the state and federal legislative responses in the summer of2016 were entirely inadequate. For example, no state at …
Personal Reality: Delusion In Law And Science, Joshua C. Tate
Personal Reality: Delusion In Law And Science, Joshua C. Tate
Connecticut Law Review
The concept of an insane delusion appears in several branches of the, law, including contracts, gifts, and wills. Critics of the traditional doctrine have made compelling arguments in favor of its modification or abolition in the context of wills, given that it is often used as an excuse to substitute the values of jurors for those of the testator. Moreover, recent scientific studies have shown correlations between delusions and other cognitive impairments, calling into question the need for an independent doctrine of insane delusion. Nevertheless, there is evidence that not all deluded individuals have additional cognitive biases, and those who …

A Closer Look: Iris Recognition, Forensics, And The Future Of Privacy Note, Chantelle D. Ankerman
Connecticut Law Review
The iris was first suggested for use in biometrically-based recognition of humans over a century ago. This notion stems from clinical observations, developmental biology, and statistical evidence that indicate the structure of individual irises is highly distinctive and stable with age. Recent technological advances have brought to the fore iris recognition systems with enhanced detection capability. The current state of the art for this powerful tool allows the capture of a moving subject's iris pattern from afar, through sunglasses, or even from a reflection. Valuable for national security and law enforcement applications, iris recognition provides a means of covert surveillance, …
Cognitive Competence In Executive-Branch Decision Making, Anna Spain Bradley
Cognitive Competence In Executive-Branch Decision Making, Anna Spain Bradley
Connecticut Law Review
The decisions Presidents and those operating under their authority take determine the course of our nation and the trajectory of our lives. Consequently, understanding who has the power and authority to decide has captured both the attention of legal scholars across a variety of fields for many years and the immediate worry of the public since the 2016 Presidential election. Prevailing interventions look for ways that law can offer procedural and institutional reforms that aim to maintain separation of powers and avoid an authoritarian regime. Yet, these views commonly overlook a fundamental factor and a more human one: the individuals …
A Relational Feminist Approach To Conflict Of Laws, Roxana Banu
A Relational Feminist Approach To Conflict Of Laws, Roxana Banu
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Feminist writers have long engaged in critiques of private law. Surrogacy contracts or the “reasonable man” standard in torts, for example, have long been the subjects of thorough feminist analysis and critique. When private law issues touch on more than one jurisdiction, Conflict of Laws is the doctrine that determines which jurisdiction can try the case and—as separate questions—which jurisdiction’s law should apply and under what conditions a foreign judgment can be recognized and enforced. Yet, there are virtually no feminist perspectives on Conflict of Laws (also known as Private International Law). This is still more surprising when one considers …
Prenatal Abandonment: 'Horton Hatches The Egg' In The Supreme Court And Thirty-Four States, Mary M. Beck
Prenatal Abandonment: 'Horton Hatches The Egg' In The Supreme Court And Thirty-Four States, Mary M. Beck
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
This article addresses an issue critical to forty-one percent of fathers in the United States: prenatal abandonment. Under prenatal abandonment theory, fathers can lose their parental rights to non-marital children if they do not provide prenatal support to the mothers of their children. This is true even if the mothers have not notified the fathers of the pregnancy and if the mothers or fathers are unsure of the fathers’ paternity. While this result may seem counterintuitive, it is necessitated by demographic trends. Prenatal abandonment theory has been structured to protect mothers, fathers, and fetuses in response to a number of …

The College Admissions Problem: Effects Of Income And Ability Of Postsecondary Education Outcomes, Martha Whamond
The College Admissions Problem: Effects Of Income And Ability Of Postsecondary Education Outcomes, Martha Whamond
Honors Theses
This paper examines the effects of students’ pre-college income on student outcomes and college admissions decisions. Under the assumption that colleges maximize utility by maximizing student outcomes, a two-stage regression model for student outcomes is building using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the 1997 National Youth Longitudinal Survey (NLSY97). The first stage estimates a model for college quality using the IPEDS dataset. The college quality estimates are then used as independent variables in the second stage. The second stage estimates student outcomes as a function of pre- college income, ability, college quality, and demographic characteristics …

Electrical Characteristics Of Nanocrystalline Silicon Resistive Memory Devices, Sumedha Gandharava, Catherine Walker, Kurtis D. Cantley
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Resistive memory devices have been studied and fabricated using a wide variety of materials including chalcogenides [1], metal oxides [2], and hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) [3]. The most promising materials seem to be amorphous in nature, with the properties of the atomic lattices being conducive to the physical mechanisms that underlie the subsequent resistive switching. The devices are also finding applications beyond high-density digital memory, such as for electronic synapses in neuromorphic systems [4], [5]. However, a different set of properties is required in the latter case compared to devices that must only store binary values. In addition, it is …

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition In Neural Circuits With Memory-Transistor-Driven Memristive Synapses, Kurtis D. Cantley, Robert C. Ivans, Anand Subramaniam, Eric M. Vogel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Spiking neural circuits have been designed in which the memristive synapses exhibit spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). STDP is a learning mechanism where synaptic weight (the strength of the connection between two neurons) depends on the timing of pre-and post-synaptic action potentials. A known capability of networks with STDP is detection of simultaneously recurring patterns within the population of afferent neurons. This work uses SPICE (simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis) to demonstrate the spatio-temporal pattern recognition (STPR) effect in networks with 25 afferent neurons. The neuron circuits are the leaky integrate-and-fire (I&F) type and implemented using extensively validated ambipolar nano-crystalline …
Prevalence Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease In Overweight And Obese Children Seeking Ambulatory Health Services In Nairobi, Anne Njeri Mburu
Prevalence Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease In Overweight And Obese Children Seeking Ambulatory Health Services In Nairobi, Anne Njeri Mburu
Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is often an asymptomatic condition one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease and is associated with an increase in cardiovascular morbidity. Being overweight or obese has been positively linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children. There is evidence to show that when detected early, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is reversible primarily upon institution of lifestyle changes targeted at weight reduction. Establishing the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in overweight and obese Kenyan children would serve as a benchmark for long term monitoring of associated morbidity and guide in public health policies …

More than forty percent of children born in America are born to unmarried parents and only half of all cohabitating adults in America are currently married. While many children are born to single parents, others are part of the two-person unmarried cohabiting functional family paradigm. What is the status of these children?
This article examines the changing paradigm of parental status, specifically vis-à-vis homosexual couples with children, and the rights of the non-biological parent after separation. This article examines the changes in law in regards to unmarried parents leading up to the Uniform Parentage Act. It describes the equitable remedies …

Proteins can be nitrated by air pollutants (NO2), enhancing their allergenic potential. This work provides insight into protein nitration and subsequent decomposition in the presence of solar radiation. We also investigated light-induced formation of nitrous acid (HONO) from protein surfaces that were nitrated either online with instantaneous gas-phase exposure to NO2 or offline by an efficient nitration agent (tetranitromethane, TNM). Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA) were used as model substances for proteins. Nitration degrees of about 1% were derived applying NO2 concentrations of 100 ppb under VIS=UV illuminated conditions, while simultaneous decomposition of (nitrated) proteins was also found …

Daughter's Generation: The Importance Of Having Daughters Living Nearby For Older Korean Immigrants' Mental Health, Hunhui Oh, Monika Ardelt, Tanya Koropeckyj-Cox
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
With declining adherence to filial piety in East Asian cultures, the closeness of adult daughters rather than sons may become more important for older Asian immigrants’ well-being. With a sample of 177 older Korean immigrants to the United States (age 60+, M = 72, SD = 7.7), we examined how and to what extent having daughters living nearby rather than sons (daughters-in-law) is related to older Asian immigrants’ mental health, moderating the direct relationship between stressful life events and depressive symptoms. The analyses showed physical proximity of daughters rather than sons (daughters-in-law) functioned as a stress buffer by reducing the …

Wayne State University Dissertations
This study is intended to examine the bullying experience among Arab American adolescents and effects on their perceived stress and health. Adolescents who are vulnerable or marginalized might be at higher risk for bullying. Arab American adolescents have not been included in research studies examining bullying and described as the invisible population.
The Neuman System Model, which focuses on wellness of adolescents in relation to environmental stress, guided this study. Bullying is a tension producing stressor, operationally defined as repeated attacks or intimidation that cause fear, distress or harm and perceived power imbalance between bully and victim. Perceived stress is …
