Short-Wavelength Light-Blocking Eyeglasses Attenuate Symptoms Of Eye Fatigue, Jonathan B. Lin, Blair W. Gerratt, Carl J. Bassi, Rajendra S. Apte

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether subjects who wear short wavelength–blocking eyeglasses during computer tasks exhibit less visual fatigue and report fewer symptoms of visual discomfort than subjects wearing eyeglasses with clear lenses.

Methods: A total of 36 healthy subjects (20 male; 16 female) was randomized to wearing no-block, low-blocking, or high-blocking eyeglasses while performing a 2-hour computer task. A masked grader measured critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) as a metric of eye fatigue and evaluated symptoms of eye strain with a 15-item questionnaire before and after computer use.

Results: We found that the change in …

Pretrial Attitudes And Their Influence On Interpretation Of Case Evidence And Mock Juror Decision-Making In Insanity Defense Cases, Justine M.L. Gonzales Jan 2017

Pretrial Attitudes And Their Influence On Interpretation Of Case Evidence And Mock Juror Decision-Making In Insanity Defense Cases, Justine M.L. Gonzales

Honors Papers

Pretrial attitudes (attitudes held preceding any case-specific information) towards the insanity defense are known to influence jurors’ decision-making about a case. However, the impact of pre-trial attitude on decisions across different types of evidence was an open question that the present study addressed. Through Amazon Mechanical Turk, participants indicated their pretrial support for the insanity defense. Participants served as mock jurors and rated the likelihood of giving the defendant not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) as well as perceived responsibility for the defendant’s actions, they gave these ratings after introducing seven different pieces of evidence (baseline case vignette, mother …

Caveolin-1(CAV-1) was demonstrated to be a tumor suppressor gene and be implicated in the development of breast cancer (BC). Numerous potentially functional polymorphisms in CAV-1 have been identified, but their effects on BC were not clear. This case-control study aims to evaluate the relationship between CAV-1 polymorphisms and BC risk. 560 BC patients and 583 healthy controls were enrolled in the present study, all from Chinese Han population. We detected 3 single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs3807987, rs1997623, and rs7804372) in CAV-1 using the Sequenom MassARRAY method. The association between CAV-1genotypes and BC risk was assessed in six genetic …

Regulatory Elements On Marijuana, For The Effective Population Health Protection, C Santos-Burgoa

Global Health Faculty Publications

When discussing the public health approach to the use of marijuana, the complexity of rigorous regulatory interventions for population protection is omitted. Using the experience of governments where these practices already exist, regulation is introduced as an essential public health function, spelling out seven purposes for controlling marijuana. The technical elements of institutional capacity -including the technical and financial capacity- and of governance that must be covered by any rigorous regulation of its use are detailed below. The difficulty of regulating psychoactive substances is addressed when considering the capacity to control other legal substances manifested with their increased consumption. It …

Changes In Land Cover And Terrestrial Biogeochemistry, Kathleen Hibbard, Forrest Hoffman, Deborah N. Huntzinger, Tristram West Jan 2017

Changes In Land Cover And Terrestrial Biogeochemistry, Kathleen Hibbard, Forrest Hoffman, Deborah N. Huntzinger, Tristram West

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

1. Changes in land use and land cover due to human activities produce physical changes in land surface albedo, latent and sensible heat, and atmospheric aerosol and greenhouse gas concentrations. The combined effects of these changes have recently been estimated to account for 40% ± 16% of the human-caused global radiative forcing from 1850 to present day (high confidence). As a whole, the terrestrial biosphere (soil and plants) is a net “sink” for carbon (drawing down carbon from the atmosphere), and this sink has steadily increased since 1980 (very high confidence). Because of the uncertainty in …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

“Blue carbon” ecosystems, which include tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows, have large stocks of organic carbon (Corg) in their soils. These carbon stocks are vulnerable to decomposition and – if degraded – can be released to the atmosphere in the form of CO2. We present a framework to help assess the relative risk of CO2 emissions from degraded soils, thereby supporting inclusion of soil Corg into blue carbon projects and establishing a means to prioritize management for their carbon values. Assessing the risk of CO2 emissions after various kinds of disturbances …

Journal of Marine Research

Selenium (Se) variations in the water column, suspended particulate matter, and sediment through the salinity gradient, together with water-quality parameters, were investigated over four different river conditions: lowest–highest runoff and high–low production period between November 2004 and August 2005 in the plume of the Gediz River, Aegean Sea, Turkey. The drainage basin of the Gediz delta is predominantly agricultural and industrial in character. Dissolved Se exceeded the water-quality standard of 5 μg L–1 during high flow and varied from 9.4 μg L–1 to 0.02 μg L–1 through the salinity gradient during the study period. Particulate Se ranged …

Journal of Marine Research

This paper reviews the historical development of concepts and practices in the science of ocean predictions. It begins with meteorology, which conducted the first forecasting experiment in 1950, followed by wind waves, and continuing with tidal and storm surge predictions to arrive at the first successful ocean mesoscale forecast in 1983. The work of Professor A. R. Robinson of Harvard University, who produced the first mesoscale ocean predictions for the deep ocean regions is documented for the first time. The scientific and technological developments that made accurate ocean predictions possible are linked with the gradual understanding of the importance of …

Modeling And Forecasting The “Weather Of The Ocean” At The Mesoscale, Anne Marie Treguier, Eric P. Chassignet, Arnaud Le Boyer, Nadia Pinardi

Journal of Marine Research

We present a historical perspective on ocean mesoscale variability and turbulence, from the physical basis and the first numerical models to recent simulations and forecasts. In the mesoscale range (typically, spatial scales of 100 km and time scales of a month), nonlinearity, and energy cascades were well understood in the 1970s, but the emergence of coherent vortices took place much later. New challenges have arisen with the exploration of the submesoscale regime, where frontal dynamics play a key role and the range of flow instabilities is wider than in the quasi-geostrophic regime. Special focus is placed on the interaction of …

Ocean Forecasting For Wave Energy Production, Alexis Mérigaud, Victor Ramos, Francesco Paparella, John V. Ringwood Jan 2017

Ocean Forecasting For Wave Energy Production, Alexis Mérigaud, Victor Ramos, Francesco Paparella, John V. Ringwood

Journal of Marine Research

There are a variety of requirements for future forecasts in relation to optimizing the production of wave energy. Daily forecasts are required to plan maintenance activities and allow power producers to accurately bid on wholesale energy markets, hourly forecasts are needed to warn of impending inclement conditions, possibly placing devices in survival mode, while wave-by-wave forecasts are required to optimize the real-time loading of the device so that maximum power is extracted from the waves over all sea conditions. In addition, related hindcasts over a long time scale may be performed to assess the power production capability of a specific …

Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Modeling And Predictions, Arthur J. Miller, Mat Collins, Silvio Gualdi, Tommy G. Jensen, Vasu Misra, Luciano Ponzi Pezzi, David W. Pierce, Dian Putrasahan, Hyodae Seo, Yu-Heng Tseng

Journal of Marine Research

Key aspects of the current state of the ability of global and regional climate models to represent dynamical processes and precipitation variations are summarized. Interannual, decadal, and global-warming timescales, wherein the influence of the oceans is relevant and the potential for predictability is highest, are emphasized. Oceanic influences on climate occur throughout the ocean and extend over land to affect many types of climate variations, including monsoons, the El Niño Southern Oscillation, decadal oscillations, and the response to greenhouse gas emissions. The fundamental ideas of coupling between the ocean-atmosphere-land system are explained for these modes in both global and regional …

Issues In Stochastic Ocean Modeling, Cecile Penland, Antonio Navarra Jan 2017

Issues In Stochastic Ocean Modeling, Cecile Penland, Antonio Navarra

Journal of Marine Research

The general theory of stochastic differential equations is presented in this chapter, including the theoretical background on how measured statistics from time series can be used to develop a stochastic parameterization. The general rules of stochastic calculus, including the important and often overlooked differences between Ito and Stratonovich calculus, are mentioned, and references are provided in which more detail may be found. We discuss how Stratonovich calculus is usually appropriate for fluid systems, whereas Ito calculus is often appropriate for data assimilation. We also discuss some common numerical pitfalls awaiting the unwary modeler, and warn against unsophisticated random number generators. …

Formal Declarations Of Intended Childcare Parentage, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2017

Formal Declarations Of Intended Childcare Parentage, Jeffrey A. Parness

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

This Essay first reviews current state imprecise childcare parentage laws and then considers the importance of parental intentions in such laws. This Essay goes on to suggest new mechanisms for formal declarations of intended childcare parentage. Such declarations would not necessarily determine childcare parentage under law. Still, they would be quite helpful when courts assess earlier actions when determining imprecise childcare parentage issues.

Spectral Properties Of A Sequence Of Matrices Connected To Each Other Via Schur Complement And Arising In A Compartmental Model, Evan Haskell, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy Jan 2017

Spectral Properties Of A Sequence Of Matrices Connected To Each Other Via Schur Complement And Arising In A Compartmental Model, Evan Haskell, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy

Mathematics Faculty Articles

We consider a sequence of real matrices An which is characterized by the rule that An−1 is the Schur complement in An of the (1,1) entry of An, namely −en, where en is a positive real number. This sequence is closely related to linear compartmental ordinary differential equations. We study the spectrum of An. In particular,we show that An has a unique positive eigenvalue λn and {λn} is a decreasing convergent sequence. We also study the stability of An for small n using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion.

Inspiration Versus Exploitation: Traditional Cultural Expressions At The Hem Of The Fashion Industry, Elizabeth M. Lenjo Jan 2017

Inspiration Versus Exploitation: Traditional Cultural Expressions At The Hem Of The Fashion Industry, Elizabeth M. Lenjo

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

The fashion industry is a multitrillion dollar global industry. In 2016, consumers in the United States of America alone, spent almost $380 billion on apparel and footwear. Some may deride the fashion industry as lacking substance and mere “fluff,” but the numbers validate that it is important and extremely valuable “fluff.” After all, clothing and footwear are human necessities and are the main output from this sector that spans from high-end luxury brands to low-end necessities.

Clothing and fashion help define a culture and reflect individual identity. Throughout most of human history, regional variations in style and clothing served as …

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

Alterations in microRNA (miRNA) expression may contribute to COPD pathogenesis. In COPD, lung fibroblast repair functions are altered in multiple ways, including extracellular mediator release. Our prior study revealed miR-503 expression is decreased in COPD lung fibroblasts, although the exact role played by miR-503 is undetermined. The current study examined a role of miR-503 in cytokine, growth factor and fibronectin production by lung fibroblasts from patients with and without COPD. Primary adult lung fibroblasts were isolated from patients with or without COPD. MiR-503 expression and interleukin (IL)-6, -8, PGE2, HGF, KGF, VEGF and fibronectin release were examined with or without …
