Relative Properties And Relative Potency Of Various Hydrazide Compounds That Inhibit Growth Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ronald Bartzatt
Relative Properties And Relative Potency Of Various Hydrazide Compounds That Inhibit Growth Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ronald Bartzatt
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The molecular properties of compounds expressing growth inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are determined and examined for underlying relationships by pattern recognition methods. Pattern recognition methods such as hierarchical cluster analysis will show relationships between compounds. Descriptive statistical analysis of molecular properties reveal commonality among bacteriostatic compounds. Outliers within any category of descriptor is identified by Grubb’s test. Potency of growth inhibition measured as MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) after in vitro evaluation will be compared and analyzed. Structure moieties and their effect on activity is identified. All compounds analyzed showed substantial growth inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, having MIC values ranging from …

Air separation using zeolite based adsorption processes is a widely-studied topic. Proper process modeling is a key requirement to simulate the process. Conventional process modeling for air separation is designed for large scale adsorption processes using a long cycle time. However, advanced technology now permits to use of a short cycle time using small particles, which significantly reduces the size of the process.
Traditional process models were mostly developed for large particles (dp > 1.5 mm). Typically, it is safely assumed that intra particle diffusion controls the rate of the process while axial dispersion has a much smaller effect. This is …
Investigation Of Extremum Seeking Control For Adaptive Exercise Machines, Brahm T. Powell
Investigation Of Extremum Seeking Control For Adaptive Exercise Machines, Brahm T. Powell
ETD Archive
Many muscle rehabilitation regimens are non-adaptive and recommended subjectively by physicians. While there are advantages to having the feedback of a qualified physician, utilizing real-time muscle performance feedback could be beneficial. An extremum seeking control design is proposed to fulfill the need for an automated, load-varying exercise machine that can optimize muscle performance.
Several steps are outlined to contribute to the realization of this goal. First, the extremum seeking control scheme is discussed. Second, the Hill muscle model will be described. Theoretical muscle effort extrema will be derived for selected optimization cases, namely maximizing average squared power by varying load …

“Only A Sufficient Cause:" Bram Stoker's Dracula As A Tale Of Mad Science And Faustian Redemption, Leah Christiana Davydov
ETD Archive
While present Dracula scholarship has made an extensive examination of the ways in which the novel reflects apprehensions about late Victorian scientific advances, little work to date has been done to link these anxieties to fin de siecle fiction involving mad scientists or to Bram Stoker’s lifelong interest in the story of Dr. Faustus. In this work, I argue that the primary menace within Dracula is not actually the threat posed by the novel’s vampires but rather the threat posed by the biologically determined, materialist, and potentially “mad” science practiced by the characters of Dr. John Seward and his patient, …
This Is Why I Teach! An Investigation Into The Ongoing Identity Development Of African American Educators Teaching In Urban Settings, Erica Joi Glover
This Is Why I Teach! An Investigation Into The Ongoing Identity Development Of African American Educators Teaching In Urban Settings, Erica Joi Glover
ETD Archive
Concerns regarding teacher recruitment and teacher retention among African American teachers continue to illustrate the difficulty in diversifying the teacher population. At the same time, African American teachers currently working in urban schools must successfully find strategies to engage urban youth, who face inequitable educational opportunities. Such realities can be challenging to African American teachers, who have also experienced structural oppression, as they are expected to conform to the educational ideologies and strategies of dominant, white society. As such, the personal and professional experiences of African American teachers working within urban schools will not only influence their on-going identity, but …
Restoration Of Black Oak (Quercus Velutina) Sand Barrens Via Three Different Habitat Management Approaches, David J. Kriska
Restoration Of Black Oak (Quercus Velutina) Sand Barrens Via Three Different Habitat Management Approaches, David J. Kriska
ETD Archive
Disturbance regimes, i.e. frequent fires, historically maintained oak barrens until European settlement patterns, and eventually, Smoky the Bear and the fire suppression campaign of the U.S. Forest Service snuffed out the periodic flames. In the absence of a disturbance regime, ground layer floral composition at many historical oak sand barrens will change predominantly because of a buildup of leaf litter and shading of the soils. Termed mesophication, this process of ecological succession will drive Black Oak Sand Barrens to an alternate steady state. A survey conducted on Singer Lake Bog in Green, Ohio, demonstrated that succession shifted the community to …

Targeting Orphan G Protein-Coupled Receptors For The Treatment Of Diabetes And Its Complications: C-Peptide And Gpr146, G. R. Kolar, S. M. Grote, G. L.C. Yosten
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the most abundant receptor family encoded by the human genome and are the targets of a high percentage of drugs currently in use or in clinical trials for the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and its associated complications. Thus, orphan GPCRs, for which the ligand is unknown, represent an important untapped source of therapeutic potential for the treatment of many diseases. We have identified the previously orphan GPCR, GPR146, as the putative receptor of proinsulin C-peptide, which may prove to be an effective treatment for diabetes-associated complications. For example, we have found a potential …

Speaking Of Culture, Nolan Weil
Speaking Of Culture, Nolan Weil
Textbooks
The title of this book is Speaking of Culture and its purpose is to define culture and many other concepts associated with it. My hope is that the readings in this book will help you to better understand the breadth of the concept of culture and provide you with a vocabulary for discussing it more articulately.
Culture is one of those broad concepts that is used widely, although somewhat imprecisely, in everyday English. It also cuts across many academic disciplines, and this book draws on many of them. It touches, for instance, on anthropology, biology, history, mythology, political science, psychology, …

An In Vitro Study Of The Interaction Of The Chemotherapeutic Drug Actinomycin D With Lung Cancer Cell Lines Using Raman Micro-Spectroscopy, Zeineb Farhane, Hugh Byrne, Franck Bonnier
Articles
The applications of Raman micro-spectroscopy have been extended in recent years into the field of clinical medicine, and specifically in cancer research, as anon-invasive diagnostic method in vivo and ex vivo, and the field of pharmaceutical development as a label free predictive technique for new drug mechanisms of action in vitro. To further illustrate its potential for such applications, it is important to establish its capability to fingerprint drug mechanisms of action and different cellular reactions. In this study, cytotoxicity assays were employed to establish the toxicity profiles for 48 and 72 hrs exposure of lung cancer cell lines, A549 …
The Effect Of Parental Population Density On Offspring Immune Function, Dana Davis
The Effect Of Parental Population Density On Offspring Immune Function, Dana Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is well known that an individual's environment, genetic code, and gene by environment interactions have an effect on its overall phenotype. However, there is a growing body of work that shows that parents can have an effect on their offspring's phenotype beyond the inherited genetic code. Studies have shown that parents may affect their offspring through physiological mechanisms such as egg provisioning and epigenetic effects and through behavioral mechanisms such as maternal care. In many of these cases, the parental effect is triggered by an environmental cue. Previous work has shown that density can impact immune function and cuticle …

Consumer Self-Construals: Development And Validation Of The Csc Scale, Ahmet Koksal
Wayne State University Dissertations
The role of the individual in relation to a collective has been an influential research topic in various scientific fields, including psychology, sociology, marketing, and international business. Despite this popularity, scholars have not yet reached consensus regarding how (unidimensional, two-dimensional, or three-dimensional) or at what level (individual level or culture level) this relationship should be studied. Resting on this epistemological debate, the goal of this dissertation is to provide scholars and practitioners in the marketing and international business fields with a valid and reliable research instrument that will allow the study of this relationship in consumption settings. Specifically in this …

Today the citizenry of Edinburg lives in a bi-lingual, bi-national, and bi-cultural environment of Spanish- and English-speaking peoples. Were we to travel back eighty years to the 1930s and visit the ice houses, packing sheds, cotton gins, and streets of Edinburg it would not be unusual to hear people being greeted in a cacophony of languages- “Good Day,” “Buenos días (Spanish),” “Dzień dobry (Polish),” “Guten Tag (German),“ “God dag (Swedish),” and “Goede dag (Flemish).” Through the social process known as “chain migration” friends and family will learn of opportunities and then follow previous migrants to the new community. In this …
Design Patent Litigation: Is "Obvious To Try" Unavailable For Validity Challenges Under 35 U.S.C. § 103?, 16 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 173 (2017), Scott Locke
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Ten years ago, the United States Supreme Court shook the foundation of U.S. patent law when it announced that a patented invention could be invalidated because the claimed combination of heightened the thr whether a person of ordinary skill in the art would deem a combination of features obvious to try can be measured against a perceived a likelihood of success for achieving a purpose. But the concept does not easily translate to design patents. Those types of patents are directed to ornamental features, which by definition cannot be dictated by functionality, and thus, the success of a combination cannot …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This data publication contains 2015 high-resolution land cover data for each of the 105 counties within Kansas. These data are a digital representation of land cover derived from 1-meter aerial imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). There is a separate file for each county. Data are intended for use in rural areas and therefore do not include land cover in cities and towns. Land cover classes (tree cover, other land cover, water, or city/town) were mapped using an object-based image analysis approach and supervised classification.
Strategies For Enhancing Small Business Owners' Success Rates, Susan Turner, Al Endres
Strategies For Enhancing Small Business Owners' Success Rates, Susan Turner, Al Endres
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Small-business owners represent 99.9% of all U.S. employer firms, employ 48% of the private sector employees, and provide 41.2% of the total U.S. private payroll. However, 50% of new small-business startups fail within the first 5 years of operation. The purpose of this multiple-case study was to explore strategies three small-business coffee shop owners in Duval County, Florida, used to succeed in business beyond 5 years. Three themes emerged from semistructured interviews and methodological triangulation via websites, social media, and site visits: (a) owner networking and designing the business site as a customer networking venue, (b) business plan effectiveness in …

Mapping Exposure Of Cattle To Rift Valley Fever Virus Along Their Migratory Routes, Gladys Jebiwot Mosomtai
Mapping Exposure Of Cattle To Rift Valley Fever Virus Along Their Migratory Routes, Gladys Jebiwot Mosomtai
All Master’s Theses
Aedes mosquito is the primary vector for Rift Valley fever virus which affects humans and animals. Virus transmission pathways in animals occurs when bitten by infected mosquito or when viremic animals relocate to new regions with competent mosquitoes. Though Rift Valley fever is a transboundary disease with serious economic consequences, movement of viremic animals in search of pasture or trade in spreading the diseases is not fully understood. This research was undertaken in order to better understand the cattle spatial ecology, especially for pastrolist and their interaction with vectors habitat. Using 11 collared herds between 2012 to 2015, kernel density …
