Evaluation Of Microshear Bond Strength Of Light-Cured Composite For Cementation Of Ceramic Veneer, Khalid Motlaq Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Microshear Bond Strength Of Light-Cured Composite For Cementation Of Ceramic Veneer, Khalid Motlaq

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Brief background and goal/ research question: Ceramic restorations were introduced as indirect restorative materials that combine high esthetics with superior mechanical properties. However, an important requirement for successful function of these restorations is adequate adhesion between the restoration material and tooth structure. The use of CAD/CAM restorations is steadily increasing, proper function and longevity of these restorations depends on good adhesion to the underlying substrate as well as operator technique. Preheated composite has been recommended by some clinicians and investigators for the adhesive luting of porcelain laminate veneers based on its good marginal adaptation and perceived superior mechanical durability when …

Fates Of Ovules In Groundplum Milk-Vetch (Astragalus Crassicarpus Nutt.) In South Dakota, Arvid A. Boe, Paul J. Johnson

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Groundplum milk-vetch (Astragalus crassicarpus Nutt.) is a native legume found on gravelly to sandy prairie uplands throughout central North America. The large and fleshy fruits, or pods, of this species were consumed by indigenous people and European settlers, and are cached by rodents. Our previous research on native legumes of the northern Great Plains indicated seed predation by insects, notably bruchid beetles belonging to the genus Acanthoscelides Schilsky, was a dominant factor determining viable seed production in natural and artificial plant assemblages. However, although we have studied the reproductive biology of several species of Astragalus L., none had fleshy pods. …

Comparing Spider (Araneae) Diversity In Remnant Vs Restored Tallgrass Prairie In Eastern South Dakota, A. Vantassel, L. B. Patrick, P. Johnson

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Anthropogenic influences on habitats has led to habitat destruction and species declines. The success of efforts to restore lost habitat has often been difficult to evaluate because of lost species, though groups of species (e.g., ants, spiders) have been used as bioindicators to gauge restoration success. Here we compare spider (Araneae) assemblages in remnant vs. restored tallgrass prairie in eastern South Dakota. Spiders were collected from June through August during 2012 and 2013, and each year from nine restored sites, ranging from 1 to 4 yrs after planting, and three remnant sites. Using single-factor ANOVA, we compared species richness of …

‘The Quranic Garden’: Consumption Of Fruits, Vegetables, And Whole Grains From An Islamic Perspective, Basil H. Aboul-Enein

Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research

The increasing global prevalence of obesity and obesity-related co-morbidities has prompted calls for culturally-congruent dietary patterns and health-promoting strategies and interventions appropriate for specific populations and communities. The Holy Quran is viewed as the primary behavioral and religious guidance for all Muslims around the world. Diets rich in plant-based foods and its protective role in the reduction and prevention of obesity-related diseases have been established. The purpose of this study is to examine passages cited in the Holy Quran with particular reference given to plant foods cited and features of a plant-based diet. A narrative review of the Holy Quran …

Transcending Language: Bridging Language Gaps In Science Education With Drawing, Jacqueline J. Gardner Jan 2017

Transcending Language: Bridging Language Gaps In Science Education With Drawing, Jacqueline J. Gardner

Projects

This study seeks to find if drawing can help English Language Learning (ELL) students better understand and retain science content. Seventh and eighth grade students were given series of presentations about Pluto. Half of the students were asked to write only written notes while the other half was asked to both draw and write down notes during the presentations. Their pre and post test scores were compared to show the growth of the students’ content knowledge showing that the group that was required to both draw and write had on average higher scores than the group that only wrote in …

Abjection In Late Nineteenth Century British Literature, Robin A. Imholte Jan 2017

Abjection In Late Nineteenth Century British Literature, Robin A. Imholte

Projects

In this project, I examine three major British works of literature produced in the last two decades of the nineteenth century: Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure. I show that these works reflect popular trends and fears that arose during this time, including notions of decadence and fears of degeneration. Using Julia Kristeva’s conception of abjection, as described in her work Powers of Horror, I argue that developments throughout the Victorian era: namely the advent of the theory of evolution, the …

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley Jan 2017

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley

Projects

The coordination of earthen levees in Humboldt County, California known as the Redwood Creek Flood Control Project holds mistakes within its design and composition. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) admitted in studies conducted after the sculpture’s completion in 1968 that the levees extended too far into the creek’s estuary and this overreach has yet to be corrected. Poorly negotiated allowances of the levees into the transition zone caused the circulation of the vital water vein to compromise proper supportive nourishment for ecologic health. Economies such as fishing, farming, education and tourism surrounding the waterway have also suffered. …

Improving The Practice And Culture Of Early Learning In Ohio, Diana Morello-Deserio Jan 2017

Improving The Practice And Culture Of Early Learning In Ohio, Diana Morello-Deserio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

How can preschool programs situated in public schools “get better at getting better?” This dissertation suggests a framework based on the principles of Improvement Science as one-way school districts can include preschool in their continuous improvement efforts. Document Analysis, is the method used to examine a continuous improvement protocol used in Ohio school districts known as The Ohio Improvement Process (The OIP Guide was the document analyzed). Additionally, Portraiture as “lived” experiences including both early learning educators and traditional school age leaders were reflected upon. The following research questions guided the study: What are the key operational components of the …

Mammography Utilization In African American Women, April D. Kidd Jan 2017

Mammography Utilization In African American Women, April D. Kidd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Breast cancer presents differently among women causing breast cancer health disparities with women of color disproportionally shouldering later-stage screening, incidence, and treatment, and greater mortality. This study assessed 10 predictors and rates of recent and long-term mammography utilization for women 43-79 years of age to better understand differences among age strata and races. This was the first study to use both the calculated Gail Risk scores (calculates absolute breast cancer risk over time intervals) from the 2010 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and a temporary homelessness variable in predicting mammography utilization using national-level data.

Theoretical Framework: A modified Behavioral …
