River Quality Modeling Using Differential Equations, Clark Bennett Jan 2017

River Quality Modeling Using Differential Equations, Clark Bennett

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

A mathematical model provides the ability to predict the contaminant concentration levels of a river. The advection-diffusion equation is used as a first approximation for such a model. The validity of the model's results are compared with data gathered and compiled by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. A portion of the Mississippi River beginning at a site in the Southeast portion of Saint Paul, Minnesota and ending at a bridge near La Crosse, Wisconsin was used. The focus was to create the mathematical model and to compare its estimations against the available data on this portion of the river. Proceeding …

The Stability Of A Semi-Implicit Numerical Scheme For A Competition Model Arising In Math Biology, Brennon Bauer, Amy Gifford Jan 2017

The Stability Of A Semi-Implicit Numerical Scheme For A Competition Model Arising In Math Biology, Brennon Bauer, Amy Gifford

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We study a Lotka-Volterra competition model. By using the nondimensionalization method, we analyze the stability of the steady state solutions for this system. Also, a stable numerical scheme is proposed to verify the theoretical results of the system. Using the Principle of Mathematical Induction, we prove the unconditional stability and convergence of the numerical scheme.

Discretizing The Si Epidemic Model, Kacie M. Sutton Jan 2017

Discretizing The Si Epidemic Model, Kacie M. Sutton

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Epidemic models are used as a tool to analyze the behaviors of biological diseases and how they spread. In the SI epidemic model, where S represents the group of susceptibles and I represents the group of infectives, the numerical outputs can be nonintegers, which creates obstacles in applying these results to our biological reality. Here, we discretize the model output values by applying various combinations of integerizing (Round, Ceiling, Floor). These discretized values allow the results of the SI model to be applied to reality in terms of whole person outputs. Nine potential discretized SI models are formed with the …

A Hormone Therapy Model For Breast Cancer Using Linear Cancer Networks, Michelle Mcduffie Jan 2017

A Hormone Therapy Model For Breast Cancer Using Linear Cancer Networks, Michelle Mcduffie

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Hormone therapy is a viable technique used to treat endocrine receptor positive cancers. Using the recently developed theory of cancer networks, we create a mathematical model describing the growth of an estrogen-receptive cancer governed by a linear cancer network. We then present hormone therapy as a drug that blocks the estrogen receptors of different cells in the network. Depending on the effectiveness of the drug, the model predicts coexistence of healthy and cancerous cells as well as a cure state. In the case of coexistence, the carrying capacities of all cancerous cells are reduced by hormone therapy, increasing effectiveness of …

The Kmo Method For Solving Non-Homogenous, Mth Order Differential Equations, David Krohn, Daniel Mariño-Johnson, John Paul Ouyang Jan 2017

The Kmo Method For Solving Non-Homogenous, Mth Order Differential Equations, David Krohn, Daniel Mariño-Johnson, John Paul Ouyang

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

This paper shows a simple tabular procedure \added{derived from the method of undetermined coefficients} for finding a particular solution to differential equations of the form \sum_{j=0}^m a_j\frac{d^j y}{dx^j} = P(x)e^{\alpha{}x}. This procedure reduces the derivatives of the product of an arbitrary polynomial and an exponential to rows of constants representing the coefficients of the terms. The rows are each multiplied by aj and summed to produce a mth order differential equation such that its solution is the polynomial part of the particular solution of the above equation. Solving this corresponding differential equation determines the coefficients of the polynomial. The underlying …

Improving Conservation Techniques Through Graph Theoretic Models, Rob Hammond Jan 2017

Improving Conservation Techniques Through Graph Theoretic Models, Rob Hammond

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

While concerns for local and global ecological issues increase, there is a growing need for the conservation of functioning ecosystems; as land management evolves in scope and emphasis, land managers are in need of new tools. Graph theory, a relatively efficient mathematical modeling approach, has been used for modeling and analyzing an array of networks and as a result proving itself as a potential framework for landscape modeling with its adaptable measures. Through an in-depth review of two unique examples of graph theoretic habitat modeling, we will see how these models compare to the more complex and biologically accurate spatially …

Exploring String Patterns With Trees, Deborah Sutton, Booi Yee Wong Jan 2017

Exploring String Patterns With Trees, Deborah Sutton, Booi Yee Wong

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The combination of the fields of probability and combinatorics is currently an object of much research. However, not many undergraduates or lay people have the opportunity to see how these areas can work together. We present what we hope is an accessible introduction to the possibilities easily available to many more people through the use of many examples and understandable explanations. We introduce topics of generating functions and tree structures formed through both independent strings and suffixes, as well as how we can find correlation polynomials, expected values, second moments, and variances of the number of nodes in a tree …

Graphs And Principal Ideals Of Finite Commutative Rings, J. Cain, L. Mathewson, A. Wilkens Jan 2017

Graphs And Principal Ideals Of Finite Commutative Rings, J. Cain, L. Mathewson, A. Wilkens

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In \cite{ABM}, Afkhami and Khashyarmanesh introduced the cozero-divisor graph of a ring, $\Gamma'(R)$, which examines relationships between principal ideals. We continue investigating the algebraic implications of the graph by developing the reduced cozero-divisor graph, which is a simpler analog.

Generalizations Of Goursat's Theorem For Groups, Kristina Kublik Jan 2017

Generalizations Of Goursat's Theorem For Groups, Kristina Kublik

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Petrillo's recent article in the College Mathematics Journal explained a theorem of Goursat on the subgroups of a direct product of two groups. In this note, we extend this theorem to commutative rings, and to modules over commutative rings and fields.

Early Die Out Events In Sir Epidemic Models, Jonathan Ballone Jan 2017

Early Die Out Events In Sir Epidemic Models, Jonathan Ballone

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We are interested in the behavior of an SIR epidemic model with respect to low-probability events. Specifically, we want to identify the probability of the early die out of a disease. Ordinary differential equations are commonly used to model SIR systems. However, this approach fails to describe the spontaneous die out event. We develop a Markov SIR model from which the probability of early die out can be captured. Additional simulations reveal that this model agrees closely with the ODE solutions when these low-probability events are ignored.

Linearization And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Problems, Robert Morgan Jan 2017

Linearization And Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Problems, Robert Morgan

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

The focus of this paper is on the use of linearization techniques and linear differential equation theory to analyze nonlinear differential equations. Often, mathematical models of real-world phenomena are formulated in terms of systems of nonlinear differential equations, which can be difficult to solve explicitly. To overcome this barrier, we take a qualitative approach to the analysis of solutions to nonlinear systems by making phase portraits and using stability analysis. We demonstrate these techniques in the analysis of two systems of nonlinear differential equations. Both of these models are originally motivated by population models in biology when solutions are required …

Structure-Activity And In Vivo Evaluation Of A Novel Lipoprotein Lipase (Lpl) Activator, Werner J. Geldenhuys, Joel Caporoso, Thomas C. Leeper, Yoon-Kwang Lee, Li Lin, Altaf S. Darvesh, Prabodh Sadana Jan 2017

Structure-Activity And In Vivo Evaluation Of A Novel Lipoprotein Lipase (Lpl) Activator, Werner J. Geldenhuys, Joel Caporoso, Thomas C. Leeper, Yoon-Kwang Lee, Li Lin, Altaf S. Darvesh, Prabodh Sadana

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Elevated triglycerides (TG) contribute towards increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) is an enzyme that is responsible for the metabolism of core triglycerides of very-low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and chylomicrons in the vasculature. In this study, we explored the structure-activity relationships of our lead compound (C10d) that we have previously identified as an LPL agonist. We found that the cyclopropyl moiety of C10d is not absolutely necessary for LPL activity. Several substitutions were found to result in loss of LPL activity. The compound C10d was also tested in vivo for its lipid lowering activity. Mice were fed a …

Same-Sex Parents And Their Children: Brazilian Case Law And Insights From Psychoanalysis, Helena Campos Refosco, Martha Maria Guida Fernandes

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article argues that maternal and paternal functions can be performed by same-sex parents from a psychological point of view. Consequently, the legal recognition of their relationship with their children meets the principle of human dignity pursuant to the Brazilian Federal Constitution.

Abortion, Moral Law, And The First Amendment: The Conflict Between Fetal Rights & Freedom Of Religion, Barbara Pfeffer Billauer Jan 2017

Abortion, Moral Law, And The First Amendment: The Conflict Between Fetal Rights & Freedom Of Religion, Barbara Pfeffer Billauer

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

The status of abortion as murder, and therefore amenable to governmental intervention and criminalization, has been asserted by those favoring limits on abortion. Opponents claim a superior right of privacy and/or equality exists under the Constitution, vesting in a woman the right to decide activities and actions that affect her physical corpus. The claimed interest of a State to protect the fetus is impliedly based on the concept of “morality” or “natural law,” specifically on the premise that feticide is violative of the basic code of conduct of societal norms. To my knowledge, until now, this is the first investigation …

A General Relationship Links Gait Mechanics And Running Ground Reaction Forces, Kenneth P. Clark, Laurence J. Ryan, Peter G. Weyand Jan 2017

A General Relationship Links Gait Mechanics And Running Ground Reaction Forces, Kenneth P. Clark, Laurence J. Ryan, Peter G. Weyand

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

The relationship between gait mechanics and running ground reaction forces is widely regarded as complex. This viewpoint has evolved primarily via efforts to explain the rising edge of vertical force– time waveforms observed during slow human running. Existing theoretical models do provide good rising-edge fits, but require more than a dozen input variables to sum the force contributions of four or more vague components of the body’s total mass (mb). Here, we hypothesized that the force contributions of two discrete body mass components are sufficient to account for vertical ground reaction force– time waveform patterns in full (stance foot and …

Fatigue Properties And Damage Mechanism Of A Cr-Mn Austenite Steel, Z. Q. Lv, Pei Cai, T. Yu, Yan Jin, H. F. Zhang, Tongguang Zhai, W. T. Fu Jan 2017

Fatigue Properties And Damage Mechanism Of A Cr-Mn Austenite Steel, Z. Q. Lv, Pei Cai, T. Yu, Yan Jin, H. F. Zhang, Tongguang Zhai, W. T. Fu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The fatigue properties and the damage mechanism of a Cr-Mn austenite steel were investigated using four-point bend fatigue testing. The stress-number of cycles to failure (S-N) curve of the Cr-Mn austenite steel was measured at room temperature, at the frequency of f=20 Hz and the stress ratio of R=0.1. The fatigue strength of this Cr-Mn austenite steel was measured to be 503 MPa in the maximum stress. Multiple cracks are initiated on the sample surface after fatigue failure tests, and usually only one or two of them can lead to the final failure of the samples. Most of the cracks …

Endothelium In The Pharyngeal Arches 3, 4 And 6 Is Derived From The Second Heart Field., Xia Wang, Dongying Chen, Kelley Chen, Ali Jubran, Annjosette Ramirez, Sophie Astrof

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Oxygenated blood from the heart is directed into the systemic circulation through the aortic arch arteries (AAAs). The AAAs arise by remodeling of three symmetrical pairs of pharyngeal arch arteries (PAAs), which connect the heart with the paired dorsal aortae at mid-gestation. Aberrant PAA formation results in defects frequently observed in patients with lethal congenital heart disease. How the PAAs form in mammals is not understood. The work presented in this manuscript shows that the second heart field (SHF) is the major source of progenitors giving rise to the endothelium of the pharyngeal arches 3 - 6, while the endothelium …

Mercury Contamination In Southern New England Coastal Fisheries And Dietary Habits Of Recreational Anglers And Their Families: Implications To Human Health And Issuance Of Consumption Advisories, David L. Taylor, Patrick R. Williamson Jan 2017

Mercury Contamination In Southern New England Coastal Fisheries And Dietary Habits Of Recreational Anglers And Their Families: Implications To Human Health And Issuance Of Consumption Advisories, David L. Taylor, Patrick R. Williamson

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Total mercury (Hg) was measured in coastal fishes from Southern New England (RI, USA), and Hg exposure was estimated for anglers and family members that consumed these resources. Fish Hg was positively related to total length (n = 2028 across 7 fish species), and interspecies differences were evident among legally harvestable fish. Many recreational anglers and their families experienced excessively high Hg exposure rates, which was attributed to the enriched Hg content of frequently consumed fishes. Specifically, 51.5% of participants in this study had Hg exposures exceeding the US EPA reference dose, including 50.0% of women of childbearing years. These …

Optimizing The Allocation Of Vaccines In The Presence Of Multiple Strains Of The Influenza Virus, Ana Eveler, Tayler Grahel, Abby Kenyon, Jessica Richardson Jan 2017

Optimizing The Allocation Of Vaccines In The Presence Of Multiple Strains Of The Influenza Virus, Ana Eveler, Tayler Grahel, Abby Kenyon, Jessica Richardson

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

During the annual flu season, multiple strains of the influenza virus are often present within a population. It is a significant challenge for health care administrators to determine the most effective allocation of multiple different vaccines to combat the various strains when protecting the public. We employ a mathematical model, a system of differential equations, to find a strategy for vaccinating a population to minimize the number of infected individuals. We consider various strengths of transmission of the disease, availability of vaccine doses, vaccination rates, and other model parameters. This research may lead to more effective health care policies for …

𝐸-Ergodicity And Speedups, Tyler B. George Jan 2017

𝐸-Ergodicity And Speedups, Tyler B. George

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We introduce the notion of E-ergodicity of a measure-preserving dynamical system (where E is a subset of the natural numbers). We show that given an E-ergodic system T and aperiodic system S, T can be sped up to obtain an isomorphic copy of S, using a function taking values only in E. We give examples applying this concept to the situation where E is a congruence class, the image of an integer polynomial, or the prime numbers.

A New Species Of The “Apacheanus” Group Of Genus Pseudouroctonus From Western Texas (Scorpiones: Vaejovidae), Richard F. Ayrey, Michael E. Soleglad

Euscorpius

A new species of the “apacheanus” group of genus Pseudouroctonus is described from western Texas, USA, Pseudouroctonus brysoni, sp. nov. This new species is closely related to P. apacheanus (Gertsch et Soleglad, 1972) and two other species recently described from southern Arizona. A combination of morphological differences in the hemispermatophore, the mating plug, and several morphometric-based characters are identified as diagnostic.

Cross-Modal Recognition Of Familiar Conspecifics In Goats, Benjamin J. Pitcher, Elodie F. Briefer, Luigi Baciadonna, Alan G. Mcelligott

Recognition Collection

When identifying other individuals, animals may match current cues with stored information about that individual from the same sensory modality. Animals may also be able to combine current information with previously acquired information from other sensory modalities, indicating that they possess complex cognitive templates of individuals that are independent of modality. We investigated whether goats (Capra hircus) possess cross-modal representations (auditory–visual) of conspecifics. We presented subjects with recorded conspecific calls broadcast equidistant between two individuals, one of which was the caller. We found that, when presented with a stablemate and another herd member, goats looked towards the caller sooner and …
