Examining The Perceived Influence Of A Comprehensive Youth Development Program For Promoting Black Male High School Persistence, Richard Gray Walker Dec 2017

Examining The Perceived Influence Of A Comprehensive Youth Development Program For Promoting Black Male High School Persistence, Richard Gray Walker

Dissertations

Black male youth in the United States drop out of high school at a rate consistently higher than their White counterparts. A lack of academic persistence contributes to lower workforce participation rates among Black Americans, which leads to lower national productivity and unrealized personal prosperity. Youth development research has developed an extensive body of knowledge regarding possible causes and contributing factors of minority high school dropout. Literature shows youth experience higher dropout rates when they grow up in adversity. Adversity risks such as dysfunctional families, cultural discontinuity between home and school, dysfunctional neighborhoods, or low-expectations from teachers contribute to graduation …

Development Of A 3d Collagen-Hydroxyapatite Composite In Vitro Culture Model For Osteoblasts And Osteocytes, Brian T. Golz Dec 2017

Development Of A 3d Collagen-Hydroxyapatite Composite In Vitro Culture Model For Osteoblasts And Osteocytes, Brian T. Golz

Open Access Theses

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by a severe loss in bone mineral density, putting individuals at elevated risk of bone fracture. The disorder is extremely prevalent, with high associated costs. Pharmaceutical treatments exist, but currently have severe drawbacks, and preventative measures are effective primarily within an individual's first two decades of life, long before the normal age of diagnosis. To better develop treatments in a high-throughput physiological setting, an in vitro model for bone cell culture that accurately recapitulates the in vivo cellular environment is needed. Thus, a 3D culture system has been developed utilizing porcine skin collagen oligomers (PSC) …

Devices are scaled down and different fabrication processes are introduced. The Global foundries 45 nm CMOS Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology which uses a buried oxide to isolate the surface and substrate reduces the leakage current and improves the overall power consumption of the circuits. This thesis relates to design and characterization of the amplifiers for neural recording …

Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins Dec 2017

Effect Of The Tnr Program On Genetic Diversity Of The Feral Cat Population At Abilene Christian University, Kimery Lin Hankins

Honors College

The feral cat population at Abilene Christian University is of primary concern to the community in terms of a wildlife management perspective. Due to the Trap-Neuter-Return program (TNR), initiated to maintain the cat colony, reduced genetic variability is highly probable. As a result, the suspected narrowed gene pool could create immunocompromised animals susceptible to certain diseases affecting the population. Some of these diseases could also have zoonotic implications for society. The effectiveness of TNR was assessed by comparing the DNA sequence obtained from the mitochondrial DNA control region between 17 cats of the feral population and 20 independently collected cats …

Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves Dec 2017

Contentions At The Human-Wildlife Interface: An Analysis Of Chicago’S Coyote Management Plan, Ilanah Taves

Sustainability and Social Justice

Urbanization and habitat fragmentation cause animal species to either adjust to human- dominated landscapes or suffer population loss. This paper examines the municipal challenges associated with coyotes, an animal successfully adapting to cities throughout North America. The presence of predators in highly developed areas challenges conceptual and spatial attempts to separate cities from nature. This report’s introductory sections critically examine the alienation of wildlife from the urban form. Theoretical perspectives from the discipline of animal geographies are employed to deconstruct problematic relationships between cities and animals, and reimagine a metropolis that considers the presence of nonhuman others. Engaging Jennifer Wolch’s …

Running From The Gender Police: Reconceptualizing Gender To Ensure Protection For Non-Binary People, Katie Reineck Dec 2017

Running From The Gender Police: Reconceptualizing Gender To Ensure Protection For Non-Binary People, Katie Reineck

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Non-binary people who are discriminated against at work or school are in a unique and demoralizing position. Not only have some courts expressed reluctance to use existing antidiscrimination law to protect plaintiffs who are discriminated against based on their gender identity and not simply because they are men or women, in most states non-binary genders are not legally recognized. I argue that a fundamental right to self-identification grounded in the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment would provide non-binary plaintiffs with the ability to assert their gender in court and have that assertion carry legal weight, regardless of how …

Summer Habitat Selection Of The Lower Colorado River Valley Population Of Greater Sandhill Cranes, Kammie L. Kruse, Daniel P. Collins, Courtenay M. Conring, Blake A. Grisham, Warren C. Conway, Jeffrey M. Knetter

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Identifying habitat selection and use is important to understand in wildlife management because it informs habitat manipulations, conservation efforts, and species distribution. Habitat selection by sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) has been studied primarily on overwintering areas and a few summering locations. Summer habitat selection by the Lower Colorado River Valley Population of greater sandhill cranes (A. c. tabida) in the Intermountain West is not widely known, but has been identified as an information need by many wildlife management agencies. We captured and attached satellite platform transmitter terminals to 21 adult sandhill cranes on Cibola and Sonny Bono Salton Sea National …

Changing Antimalarial Drug Sensitivities In Uganda, Stephanie Alexis Rasmussen Dec 2017

Changing Antimalarial Drug Sensitivities In Uganda, Stephanie Alexis Rasmussen

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) has demonstrated excellent efficacy for the treatment and prevention of malaria in Uganda. However, resistance to both components of this regimen has emerged in Southeast Asia. The efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine, the first-line regimen to treat malaria in Uganda, has also been excellent, but continued pressure may select for parasites with decreased sensitivity to lumefantrine. To gain insight into current drug sensitivity patterns, ex vivo sensitivities were assessed and genotypes previously associated with altered drug sensitivity were characterized for 58 isolates collected in Tororo, Uganda from subjects presenting in 2016 with malaria from the community or as part of …

Does Browsing Matter? : Predation And Population Declines In The Federally Endangered Schweinitz's Sunflower (Helianthus Schweinitzii T&G), Bryan Benson England Iii

Graduate Theses

Herbivory is a ubiquitous ecological process, yet its importance to plant community ecology and conservation biology is controversial. When Schweinitz's sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii T&G) was listed as a federally endangered species in 1991, "Predation and Parasitism" were considered "not applicable" as threats, and it was the lack of large herbivores that was repeatedly identified as a threat to this species' survival. Two decades later, persistent negative population trends in many protected populations and anecdotal reports of "heavy browse pressure from white-tailed deer" led to suggestions that herbivory by deer could be impeding the recovery of this species. To test for …

During the past several decades, the Earth system has changed significantly, especially across Northern Eurasia. Changes in the socio-economic conditions of the larger countries in the region have also resulted in a variety of regional environmental changes that can have global consequences. The Northern Eurasia Future Initiative (NEFI) has been designed as an essential continuation of the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI), which was launched in 2004. NEESPI sought to elucidate all aspects of ongoing environmental change, to inform societies and, thus, to better prepare societies for future developments. A key principle of NEFI is that these developments …

Shallow lakes and ponds constitute a significant number of water bodies worldwide. Many are heterotrophic, indicating that they are likely net contributors to global carbon cycling. Climate change is likely to have important impacts on these waterbodies. In this study, we examined two small Minnesota ponds; a permanent woodland pond and a temporary prairie pond. The woodland pond had lower levels of phosphorus and phytoplankton than the prairie pond. Using the open water oxygen method, we found the prairie pond typically had a higher level of gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (R) than the woodland pond, although the differences …

Role Of The Van1 Mannosyltransferase In Candida Albicans Protein Glycosylation, Justin Gino Dasilva Dec 2017

Role Of The Van1 Mannosyltransferase In Candida Albicans Protein Glycosylation, Justin Gino Dasilva

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The outer layer of the cell wall of Candida albicans contains glycoproteins made up of mannose-rich glycans that are critical for host-fungal interactions, including adhesion, virulence, and drug resistance. Asparagine (N)-linked glycans are added to a core oligosaccharide by mannosyltransferases in the Golgi to create the long outer chain α1,6-linked mannose “backbone” that branches with α1,2-, α1,3-, and β1,2- linked mannoses. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the mannosyltransferases responsible for these modifications have been well studied and characterized. Orthologs of these mannosyltransferases have been identified in C.albicans and in this study we examine VAN1, a mannosyltransferase that acts very early in elongation …

The Role Of Hemocytes In The Early Interactions Between The Oyster Crassostrea Virginica And Its Alveolate Parasite Perkinsus Marinus, Yuk-Ting Lau Dec 2017

The Role Of Hemocytes In The Early Interactions Between The Oyster Crassostrea Virginica And Its Alveolate Parasite Perkinsus Marinus, Yuk-Ting Lau

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is an economically- and ecologically-valuable species. Both commercial fisheries and ecological services are impacted by disease-associated mortality. Perkinsosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus, is one of the major diseases that cause mass mortalities. This dissertation aimed to investigate the role of oyster blood cells (hemocytes) in P. marinus infection. Hemocytes associated with mucosal surfaces lining the pallial (shell) cavity were characterized through functional assays and cell surface epitope labeling in conjunction with flow cytometry. Bi-directional transit of hemocytes across mucosal pallial epithelia was also evaluated using flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. In-vitro studies …

Genetically Engineered Animals, Drugs, And Neoliberalism: The Need For A New Biotechnology Regulatory Policy Framework, Zahra Meghani Dec 2017

Genetically Engineered Animals, Drugs, And Neoliberalism: The Need For A New Biotechnology Regulatory Policy Framework, Zahra Meghani

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Genetically engineered (GE) animals that are meant for release in the wild could significantly impact ecosystems given the interwoven or entangled existence of species. Therefore, among other things, it is all too important that regulatory agencies conduct entity appropriate, rigorous risk assessments that can be used for informed decision-making at the local, national and global levels about the release of those animals in the wild. In the United States (US), certain GE animals that are intended for release in the wild may be regulated as new animal drugs by the Food and Drug Administration. This paper argues that the decision …

For the survey of the poems of our corpus, we will be inspired by the literary stylistics. By means of the structurings axiologiques, it will be possible to us to seize the significance of the poems that resides in the passage of the attachment to the detachment, of the melioration to the pejoration (poetry of Somaïla Sawadogo), of the umbilical dependence («mature stomach») to the child’s biologic autonomy (poetry of Bernadette Dao), of servitude to the liberty, of State of exception in State of right (poetry of Babou Paulin Bamouni). In spite of their adherence to different times, a thematic …

Effects Of Uniaxial Cyclic Strain On Endothelial Progenitor Cells, Maria Alejandra Zeballos Castro Dec 2017

Effects Of Uniaxial Cyclic Strain On Endothelial Progenitor Cells, Maria Alejandra Zeballos Castro

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Despite the high prevalence of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), the underlying mechanisms of pathogenesis have not been found yet. Therefore, it is extremely important to study CAVD and understand how it develops. For this matter, we decided to study the potential of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) for use in tissue-engineered models of heart valves. EPCs were chosen as the cell source of interest for this study due to their high neovascularization potential and use in regenerative medicine and cardiovascular tissue engineering.

In this project, we aimed to engineer the microenvironment of cells that are involved in the formation of …
