A GWU track athlete pursuing a criminal justice degree, known as strong friend with an uplifting personality, passed away in an automobile accident in May just after completing his sophomore year. Jalin Lawson’s life was honored both at his funeral in his hometown of Fort Gaines, Ga., and at a Celebration of Life service held at Gardner-Webb University at the start of the fall semester. Sophomore Amber Freeney stated, “celebrating Jalin’s life means remembering who he was and living the way he would want you to live.”

Alaska Results First Initiative: Adult Criminal Justice Program Benefit Cost Analysis, Araceli Valle Oct 2017

Alaska Results First Initiative: Adult Criminal Justice Program Benefit Cost Analysis, Araceli Valle

AJiC Reports

Results of the Alaska Results First Initiative show that most of Alaska’s evidence-based adult criminal justice programs are showing positive return on state investment of money. Notably, all but one of those programs are shown to measurably reduce recidivism — the likelihood that an inmate will re-offend when released — which not only improves public safety, but saves the state the costs associated with criminal activity. The State of Alaska annually invests in Alaska’s adult criminal justice system to provide services and programs to eligible offenders, including domestic violence treatment, vocational and general education, and re-entry services. The study estimates …

Political Advocacy: A Professional Responsibility For Nurses, Judith Ann Young

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Patient advocacy is a professional responsibility. Nursing's unique perspective provides an informed voice to legislators. Due to reluctance to assume an advocacy role nursing's political influence has diminished. A state Senator was invited to raise nurse awareness of the importance for patient advocacy in the legislative arena.

Repairing Trust: Young Men In Neighborhoods With Cure Violence Programs Report Growing Confidence In Police, Jeffrey A. Butts, Sheyla A. Delgado

Publications and Research

Researchers at John Jay Research and Evaluation Center found evidence to suggest the presence of Cure Violence — a place-based, public-health approach to violence reduction that relies on “outreach workers” and “violence interrupters” to prevent high-risk individuals from using violence to resolve conflicts — increases confidence in police in affected neighborhoods.

The Effects Of Cure Violence In The South Bronx And East New York, Brooklyn, Sheyla A. Delgado, Laila Alsabahi, Kevin T. Wolff, Nicole Marie Alexander, Patricia A. Cobar, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

New York City launched its first Cure Violence program—which uses community outreach to interrupt violence—in 2010 with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice. By 2017, there were 18 programs around the city. This report examines Man Up! Inc. in East New York, Brooklyn, and Save Our Streets South Bronx. Each neighborhood was compared to another neighborhood similar in demographics and crime trends but without a Cure Violence program. There is promising evidence that Cure Violence may help to create safe and healthy communities.

Sharing Faculty Collaboration Success Stories, Anne Hudson, R. Alan Thompson

University Libraries Workshops and Presentations

At the University of Southern Mississippi, and across the country in Academic Libraries, the mantra for Public Services Librarians is to develop relationships with your assigned faculty members and to work with them collaboratively. This presentation will highlight three success stories from a new librarian’s first year: a reinvention of basic library instruction for our English 102 course; office hours and a pathfinder for our History 101 course; and, coauthoring an open access textbook (with a cop!). The presenter will encourage the audience to share their own success stories so that we can all grow together. Attendees will leave with …

Storying Gendered Violence: Indigenous Understandings Of The Interconnectedness Of Violence, Josie Nelson Oct 2017

Storying Gendered Violence: Indigenous Understandings Of The Interconnectedness Of Violence, Josie Nelson

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The research and scholarship of gendered violence on university campuses is growing; however, there is currently limited to no research exploring the experiences of Indigenous peoples, particularly women and two-spirit, non-binary and transgender students. To advance the knowledge of the interconnectedness of violence, I conducted two focus groups with six Indigenous women staff at Wilfrid Laurier University. This research, informed by Indigenous feminism and storytelling methodologies, shares their understandings of how colonial and gendered violence cannot be understood independent from one another. Participants also provide insight into the needed supports on campus for Indigenous students who have experienced gendered violence. …

"An Aura Of Disbelief:" Rape Mythology And Victim Blaming In The Legal Response To Disclosure Of Sexual Violence, Lauren Parcher Oct 2017

"An Aura Of Disbelief:" Rape Mythology And Victim Blaming In The Legal Response To Disclosure Of Sexual Violence, Lauren Parcher

Social Justice and Community Engagement

This research study focuses on sexual violence (SV) in Canada, which one in three women will experience during their lives. Yet, even though the prevalence of violence against women in Canada is so significant, only one in ten survivors will report their experience of SV to the criminal justice system (CJS). Previous literature has identified the limited number of reports to authorities in Canada as being related to rape mythology. Due to the influence of rape mythology, a notion of a “good versus bad victim” is often used to deem which survivors are innocent and credible versus responsible or blamed …
