Director's Editorials from Age in Action
Veterinarians have noticed for quite some time that individuals who mistreat their animals may not stop there, carrying over their behavior to spouses, parents and others. Research articles and “overview” publications have increased in number, as have advocacy groups and just the beginnings of connections between domestic violence and animal rights groups.

A Learning Model Of Community Collaboration In West Virginia, Tracy L. Bradley
A Learning Model Of Community Collaboration In West Virginia, Tracy L. Bradley
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study tested a grounded theory model, Getting it Together: A Learning Model of Community Collaboration, developed during a six-year study (2004-2010) of a statewide substance abuse prevention program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). The model features the perceptions and experiences of those who were active in community-based collaborative and educational work in West Virginia focused on substance abuse prevention. The study revisited community coalitions from three counties that were part of the original ethnographic research used to develop the community collaboration theory. The grounded theory …

A Study Of The Wv Judges' Truancy Program Used In Eight Wv Counties From 2012-2015, Lori Gibson Comer
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to examine the West Virginia Judges’ Truancy Program used in eight counties from 2012-2015. The study compared attendance rates, dropout rates and graduation rates prior to the implementation of the program and the three years of program implementation, as well as perceptions of those using the program. While much research can be found concerning the topic of truancy and some research on different types of truancy diversion programs, no research has been found on this particular program used in West Virginia. In this study data were collected from the West Virginia Department of Education …

Commodifying Policing: A Recipe For Community-Police Tensions, Nora V. Demleitner
Commodifying Policing: A Recipe For Community-Police Tensions, Nora V. Demleitner
Scholarly Articles
This Article, in Part II, begins with a description of how municipalities, at least since the recession of 2008, have fallen short of fully funding their departments. Part III focuses on four distinct outside funding components and their impact on policing. The first subsection discusses asset forfeitures, under both state and federal law. Subsection two highlights revenue derived from citations, often in the form of traffic tickets. A discussion of fees that are being added to fines, often to fund courts, probation agencies, and police departments, follows. The increasing amounts and types of fees imposed have substantially increased the burden …
Crimmigration-Counterterrorism, Margaret Hu
Crimmigration-Counterterrorism, Margaret Hu
Scholarly Articles
The discriminatory effects that may stem from biometric ID cybersurveillance and other algorithmically driven screening technologies can be better understood through the analytical prism of “crimmigration-counterterrorism”: the conflation of crime, immigration, and counterterrorism policy. The historical genesis for this phenomenon can be traced back to multiple migration law developments, including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. To implement stricter immigration controls at the border and interior, both the federal and state governments developed immigration enforcement schemes that depended upon both biometric identification documents and immigration screening protocols. This Article uses contemporary attempts to implement an expanded regime of “extreme vetting” …

Cyber Violence: What Do We Know And Where Do We Go From Here?, Jillian K. Peterson, James Densley
College of Liberal Arts All Faculty Scholarship
This paper reviews the existing literature on the relationship between social media and violence, including prevalence rates, typologies, and the overlap between cyber and in-person violence. This review explores the individual-level correlates and risk factors associated with cyber violence, the group processes involved in cyber violence, and the macro-level context of online aggression. The paper concludes with a framework for reconciling conflicting levels of explanation and presents an agenda for future research that adopts a selection, facilitation, or enhancement framework for thinking about the causal or contingent role of social media in violent offending. Remaining empirical questions and new directions …

BACKGROUND: HIV-infected individuals recently released from incarceration have suboptimal linkage and engagement in community HIV care. We conducted a study to evaluate an information and communication technology intervention to increase linkage to community care among HIV-infected persons recently involved in the criminal justice (CJ) system. Baseline characteristics including risk behaviors and HIV care indicators are reported and stratified by gender.
METHODS: We recruited HIV-infected individuals in the District of Columbia jail and persons with a recent history of incarceration through community and street outreach. Participants completed a baseline computer-assisted personal interview regarding HIV care and antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence, substance …
Perceptions On Police Use Of Force: A General Strain Theory Approach To Explicate Use Of Force Incidents, Clint Edward Apaza
Perceptions On Police Use Of Force: A General Strain Theory Approach To Explicate Use Of Force Incidents, Clint Edward Apaza
Master’s Theses and Projects
This mixed method study focused on stress and its influence on police officers’ use of force. As a theoretical frame, Agnew’s General Strain Theory (GST) was applied to measure police officers’ decision making process in use of force, and the evaluation was compared to the college population. Data derived from law enforcement officers and college students via survey questionnaires reflecting strain factors and the Use of Force Model of case-vignettes. The magnitude of strain is measured via the assessment three major psychological diagnostic criteria: 1) STAI (State Trait Anxiety Inventory, 2) PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and 3) DI (Depression Inventory). …

Mobile Phone Technology And Online Sexual Harassment Among Juveniles In South Korea: Effects Of Self-Control And Social Learning, Kyung-Shick Choi, Seong-Sik Lee, Jin Ree Lee
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Mobile phones are increasingly developing into a technology-based device that everyone is dependent on. While previous research has been extensive in examining different theoretical explanations for interpreting juvenile delinquency, research on mobile induced online sexual harassment among juvenile populations have been rather scarce and limited. As a result of this dearth, the present study employs a theoretical approach in rationalizing why juveniles commit online sexual harassment using their mobile phones. Elements from both social learning and self-control theories are used to assess the causes for online sexual harassment using mobile phones. By conducting binomial logistic regression analyses, this study finds …

Ukraine : Papillary Thyroid Cancer, Elizabeth Paris
Global Public Health
Ukraine is a middle- to low- income country run by a semi-presidential republic, after the banning of the Communist party in the early 1990's. While the nation faces various internal and external challenges, including unemployment rates and war with Russia, Ukraine also continues to face a major public health issue that originated in the 1980's. In 1986, an explosion was triggered at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine. The explosion released radioactive iodine into the ground, water, and air, and it was discovered soon after that this had a long-lasting effect on health. It has been observed that rates …

Gabon is a country in West Africa that has a population of 1.8 million and is a relatively poor nation. It has had quite a few public health and political problems in the last couple of years. These problems include water and electricity shortages along with HIV/AIDS. HIV seems to be one of the biggest public health problems in Gabon at this moment. There is quite a bit of the population that is living with this virus. However, there are many people that are living with this virus but either do not understand the severity of it or just do …

Future Mandated Reporters: Understanding The Role, Sara Golomb, Katie Sears, Rebecca Drozd, Juna Kotori, Melissa Vera-Hughes
Education Faculty Publications
Graduate students in the medical, mental health, and educational fields have in common that they all will become future mandated reporters. As part of their graduate training, these professionals receive minimal training at best as to how to proceed when faced with reasonable suspicion that maltreatment has occurred. Unfortunately, specific training is not common, leaving graduates exposed and putting the children they serve at further risk. The purpose of this pilot study was to obtain direct feedback from graduate educators and graduate students as to the way the topics of child maltreatment and mandated reporting are incorporated into training programs. …

A Community Of Capital: Leveraging Peer Networks At Community Colleges, Christina Phelps
Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis uses theories of social and cultural capital to explain how community college students are capital-rich individuals who navigate their community colleges with strategies that reflect and build on their class habitus. In depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 46 traditional-aged college students at Midwestern Community College. Qualitative analysis revealed that students’ social and cultural capital allows them to experience the community college in four distinct ways: as an Involved Student Leader, a Visiting Collegian, a Free Rider, or a Determined but Disconnected student. Involved Student Leaders and Visiting Collegians, with institution-valued forms of capital, have socially and academically …
