Childhood Victimization Pathways And Violent Extremism, Michael K. Logan
Childhood Victimization Pathways And Violent Extremism, Michael K. Logan
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The current study elaborates on childhood victimization as a nonideological risk-factor for participation in violent extremism. In particular, we focus on contextualizing the early lives of a sample of former members of violent White supremacist groups (n = 44). Data were collected through life-history interviews and analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. The findings indicate that there are three distinct victimization pathways characterize the early lives of our sample: (a) living in a dangerous family, (b) residing in a dangerous community, and (c) living in an unstable, chaotic family environment. These victimization pathways provide further insight into the …

Engaging Users: Enabling Data Analysis, James M. Hopkins
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The challenge in many data collection/analysis efforts is that of engaging users to participate. The Juvenile Case Management System (JCMS) project is a solution to that challenge. JCMS is developed in a collaborative effort between the Juvenile Justice Institute (JJI), the Nebraska Crime Commission, and the Public Health Informatics Research Lab.
Information systems must engage their users to be effective. This research investigates engaging users to interact with information systems and improve data collection for analysis.
The JCMS platform provides a web-based, centralized, database system to users working across the state of Nebraska. By involving users in system and screen …

Discovery Day (formerly Post & Beyond)
Exploring new internship opportunities is the key to engaging in a rich and meaningful education. The wisdom I have gleaned as an intern for Herstory Writers Workshop has enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined. Herstory Writers Workshop provides a community-based learning environment for its participants, which is one of the many reasons why I became a highly enthusiastic member of its organization. I am extremely passionate by the way in which Herstory instills in students and interns the confidence, skills, and support they need in order to propel forward into the next stages of their lives. …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Friday, March 17, 2017:
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with Practice Implementation Centers (PICs) and Discipline Specific Workgroups (DSWs) have embarked on an interprofessional collaborative practice project to enhance professional's clinical skill sets for the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs), by employing the expanded use of alcohol screening and brief intervention. This innovative collaboration entails work from 6 disciplines and numerous national partners. Maternal prenatal alcohol use is one of the leading preventable causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities (Hartje, Edwards, & Edney, 2015). Children exposed to alcohol during fetal …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will discuss two major components of past crimes at Cal Poly: the attentive student response to Kristin Smart’s 1996 disappearance in light of possible shortcomings of authorities, and how events such as these have shaped campus safety policies and regulations since the 1990s. Kristin Smart’s disappearance, as well as other criminal acts against students in the 1990s and beyond, brought the Cal Poly student community together in solidarity year after year with programs such as Take Back the Night. Even though the red handprints, indicators of areas in which someone had been sexually assaulted, have been removed from …

Substance Use And Treatment Outcomes Among Spanish-Speaking Latino/As From Four Acculturation Types., Kelly Serafini, Dennis C Wendt, India J Ornelas, Suzanne R Doyle, Dennis M Donovan
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
The purpose of this study was to examine the association of acculturation with substance use treatment outcomes in a sample of treatment-seeking Latino/as (N = 405). The study used data from a multisite randomized controlled trial of a culturally adapted version of Motivational Enhancement Therapy delivered in Spanish. Berry, Kim, Minde, and Mok's (1987) acculturation model was used to divide the sample into 4 types (integrated, assimilated, separated, marginalized), based on Bicultural Involvement Questionnaire scores. One-way analyses of variance, chi-squared tests, and repeated-measures regression were used to examine baseline acculturation, posttreatment outcomes, and follow-up outcomes. All participants were of Latino/a …
