Perceptions Of Justice And Motivations For Becoming A Police Officer: Differences Across Recruits And Law Enforcement Officers, Erika J. Waterman-Smith

Master of Science in Criminal Justice Theses & (Pre-2016) Policy Research Projects

This study examined the motivations for choosing law enforcement as a career and perceptions of different prevalent criminal justice issues among police recruits and police officers. Additionally, the motivations and perceptions were compared across recruits and officers to see if they changed over time. The purpose of this study was to see if the police subculture and socialization had an impact on their motivations and perceptions. A survey method was administered on a sample of both recruits and officers from several Southeastern police departments. Bivariate analyses indicated that there were several significant differences across recruits and police officers in their …

Police Say Leadership Is Ignoring Ptsd., Tiffany Thomas Mar 2017

Police Say Leadership Is Ignoring Ptsd., Tiffany Thomas

Nearly one in every five officer has symptoms of PTSD according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Depression, PTSD, anxiety and suicidal thoughts are all results of unmanaged stressors. These issues can have a huge impact on an officer’s physical and mental well-being, and can accumulate over the course of his or her career. As police are under fire for a series of killings of innocent black people, they believe their PTSD issues are being overlooked.

Police officers are on the front line of violence and high risk situations but the toll on their mental health is often overlooked. …

University Libraries Publications

Faculty collaboration is key in developing successful summative assessments. We have used our mini grant to participate in two off-campus retreats dedicated to designing summative assessments for the student learning outcomes of 100-level LIB credit courses. During our first retreat in December 2016, we worked together to improve our existing SLOs and create signature summative assessments for each SLO. For our upcoming May 2017 retreat, we will tackle developing an assessment plan and analyzing collected assessment data.

Of Spies, Saboteurs, And Enemy Accomplices: History’S Lessons For The Constitutionality Of Wartime Military Tribunals, Martin S. Lederman Mar 2017

Of Spies, Saboteurs, And Enemy Accomplices: History’S Lessons For The Constitutionality Of Wartime Military Tribunals, Martin S. Lederman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Congress has recently authorized military commissions to try enemies not only for violations of the international law of war, but also for domestic-law offenses, such as providing material support to terrorism and conspiring to commit law-of-war offenses. Moreover, President Trump has indicated support for further military trials, including trials against U.S. citizens. Such military tribunals lack the civilian jury and independent judge that Article III of the Constitution prescribes. The constitutionality of such an abrogation of Article III’s criminal trial guarantees has been debated during many of the nation’s wars without clear resolution, and the constitutional question is now at …

Global Comparison Of Incarceration: Punitive Versus Rehabilitative Frameworks, Rachel Digangi, Joshua Baldwin Mar 2017

Global Comparison Of Incarceration: Punitive Versus Rehabilitative Frameworks, Rachel Digangi, Joshua Baldwin

Community of Scholars Day—Posters

Inspired by an internship at Billerica House of Corrections, I have found interest in conducting research on the different frameworks used for incarceration across the world. I am focusing on comparing the recidivism rates between rehabilitative and punitive prison systems. Especially in countries that have decriminalized drugs, the treatment component has been enhanced tremendously. Their success in rehabilitation forces us to question if our system is truly a broken system; reinforcing our concept of stereotypical “criminal behavior.”
