Increasing Shared Attention In Children With Developmental Delays, Shelby Esman Apr 2017

Increasing Shared Attention In Children With Developmental Delays, Shelby Esman

Honors Theses

Joint attention behaviors may be essential to the development of language and social interaction skills (Whalen and Schreibman, 2003). Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often lack these behaviors which may explain the difficulty many of them have communicating appropriately with others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Previous research has shown that prompting procedures and social reinforcement have been successful in teaching children with ASD to shift their eye gaze between an adult and the object of interest when prompted to do so (Taylor and Hoch, 2008). This present study set out to create and test a procedure designed to teach …

Mexicans In The U.S And Hiv: Reviewing Social And Cultural Factors, Eduardo Alvarez Apr 2017

Mexicans In The U.S And Hiv: Reviewing Social And Cultural Factors, Eduardo Alvarez

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Mexican immigrants in the United States continue to struggle with disproportionate incidences of HIV infection. Behaviors that contributed to the development of AIDS among Mexican immigrants were the lack of condom use, engaging in risky sexual behavior, and not having HIV testing (Martínez Donate, et al., 2015). While these risk factors are preventable, religious and social stigmatization present within the Mexican community generate shame and embarrassment. This discourages Mexican immigrants from seeking health services, such as HIV testing. An estimated 20% of HIV positive Mexican immigrants are unaware of their condition, and contribute to the spread of the virus (Hall …

Is She Worse Than Him: An Attitudes And Perceptions Study, Sydney Mullins

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

There is currently an ongoing debate in regards to the level of equality amongst women and men in American society. Women often feel they are not seen as equal to men, and in most cases, this has proven to be true. However, whether or not this is true when it comes to the way people perceive deviant behavior is up for debate.

The purpose of this research is to assess the attitudes and perceptions, of the general public, surrounding the same acts being committed by males and females. The goal is to determine if a person committing criminal acts is …

White Perceptions Of Racial Inequality And Attitudes Towards Black Lives Matter Movement, Sean Jackson (Class Of 2017)

Academic Festival

Attitudes towards the Black Lives Matter movement have proven to be divisive since its inception in response to the Trayvon Martin verdict in 2012. This research attempts to explore what factors shape public opinion of #BlackLivesMatter. Specifically, how do White racial attitudes impact perceptions of this 21st century Black liberation movements. Based on survey sampling of 150 white university students [Sacred Heart University, and other colleges including Harvard University, Ithaca University, Curry College, University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Columbia] findings indicate that white racial awareness as measured by Colorblindness and Aggrieved Whiteness significantly impact perceptions of the Black …

Objection!: Ace Attorney And The Japanese Criminal Courts, Emmalee A. Ellison Apr 2017

Objection!: Ace Attorney And The Japanese Criminal Courts, Emmalee A. Ellison

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The Ace Attorney video game series is a game series developed by Capcom since 2001 that can be described as an interactive visual novel in the criminal courts. Despite claims that the Ace Attorney video game series is inaccurate to court proceedings, these arguments are made in comparison to the American criminal justice system, and not the Japanese courts that the series was originally modeled after. The Ace Attorney series holds relatively true to the happenings of the Japanese criminal justice system, except some scenarios are localized and exaggerated for the sake of video game drama and suspense. Moreover, since …

Standing, Politics, And Exhaustion: A Response To Legislative Exhaustion, Heather Elliott Apr 2017

Standing, Politics, And Exhaustion: A Response To Legislative Exhaustion, Heather Elliott

William & Mary Law Review Online

Professor Michael Sant’Ambrogio’s article, Legislative Exhaustion, usefully approaches the problem of “legislative standing” by abandoning the typical Article III standing analysis and making instead a separation-of-powers argument. His theory—that Congress may sue the President only when it has no legislative avenue for addressing its problems—provides both a workable account of and a limiting principle for suits by the legislative branch against the executive. His analysis, however, raises questions regarding the effect of legislative lawsuits on the constitutional balance of powers. This Essay suggests that these questions should be more fully explored before Professor Sant’Ambrogio’s approach can be adopted. It concludes …

Schizophrenia And Its Effects On An American Family: A Call To Action For The 21st Century, Cynthia Newton Captain Apr 2017

Schizophrenia And Its Effects On An American Family: A Call To Action For The 21st Century, Cynthia Newton Captain

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Our country’s healthcare system is at a moral and ethical crossroads. The way we treat those whom we call “the homeless” is deplorable. Many of the homeless are mentally ill and need treatment. Those with the severe brain diseases of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, and bi-polar disorder should be treated just as those with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are treated. Those with severe mental illness, who have no insight into their illness, should not be allowed to dictate their own treatment. If a homeless person is brought to San Francisco General Hospital and is found to be a schizophrenic in …

A Constitutional Case For Appointed Counsel In Immigration Proceedings: Revisiting Franco-Gonzalez, Johan Fatemi Apr 2017

A Constitutional Case For Appointed Counsel In Immigration Proceedings: Revisiting Franco-Gonzalez, Johan Fatemi

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article argues that had the Franco-Gonzalez court evaluated the plaintiffs’ constitutional claims by applying the classic Mathews v. Eldridge due process balancing test supplemented by more recent United States Supreme Court jurisprudence, the Franco-Gonzalez court would have arrived at an identical conclusion regarding the categorical right to appointed counsel for individuals with mental disabilities. This Article further argues that the legal rationales for the putative successful constitutional claim in Franco-Gonzalez can be used to extend civil Gideon to other classes of vulnerable immigrant groups in removal proceedings, including detained noncitizen women and children like Marisol and Jennifer.

The Balloon Effect On West Virginia, Ashley N. Wilson Apr 2017

The Balloon Effect On West Virginia, Ashley N. Wilson

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

According to the CDC, West Virginia is eleven times the national average for opiate related deaths. Huntington has been hit the worst with this drug epidemic. The idea of the balloon effect on drugs, is more commonly used to describe what happens when clamping down on the production of a drug in one area will push that same drug into another area. However, I will examine how the crack down on prescription pills here in West Virginia, has led to the pop up of other illicit drug use in the state.

Results: 964 articles were identified through database searching and subsequent snowballing. 60 articles underwent full text …

The Effectiveness Of Treatment Plans For Incarcerated Individuals With Personality Disorders, Chelsea Wallen Apr 2017

The Effectiveness Of Treatment Plans For Incarcerated Individuals With Personality Disorders, Chelsea Wallen

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This literature review aims to examine the types of treatment plans incarcerated individuals diagnosed with personality disorders receive and their effectiveness. I expect to find that inmates who receive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) will have higher rates of completing treatment. DBT consists of individual and group therapy, with a focus on the person’s emotions and actions and how they are related. Research indicates that DBT is an effective treatment strategy for female inmates with borderline personality disorder, as well as for inmates with comorbid borderline and antisocial personality disorders. Substance abuse treatment strategies have also been found to be effective …

Why Do Victims Keep Returning To Abusive Intimate Partners, Jieying Zhou Apr 2017

Why Do Victims Keep Returning To Abusive Intimate Partners, Jieying Zhou

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Purpose: The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (2010) states that more than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Most of the victims keep returning back to the abusive partners. The purpose of this study is to examine the following three questions: a) why would an individual keep on returning to an abusive relationship, b) how do attachment patterns enter into abusive relationships, and c) what individual characteristics make some more likely than others …

(Re)Storying Ferguson: Youth Voices And Literate Lives, Katherine O'Daniels Apr 2017

(Re)Storying Ferguson: Youth Voices And Literate Lives, Katherine O'Daniels

Dissertations

This dissertation reports on a collaborative action research study conducted with Sioux Roslawski, a third-grade teacher in a Ferguson, Missouri elementary school. Sioux and I wondered how students might use words, images, and actions to shape a vision of their community space and its future in the aftermath of the Michael Brown shooting. Situated within a critical-spatial and sociocultural paradigm, placemaking stems from understandings of place as culturally produced and interpreted, and, thus, capable of being re-designed in the interest of equity and social justice. The research methodology was guided by a critical qualitative and ethnographic approach, coupled with critical …
