Capitalism And Colonialism And The Emergence Of The Black Lives Matter Movement, Matthew Dwayne Campbell
Capitalism And Colonialism And The Emergence Of The Black Lives Matter Movement, Matthew Dwayne Campbell
Theses and Dissertations
In 2012, the death of Trayvon Martin would activate the conscience of Black Americans nationwide. In response to the acquittal of Martin’s assailant, a social media movement with the hashtag “Black Lives Matter” was conceived. The Black Lives Matter Movement attempts to impede the recurrent nature of police violence in Black communities. I hypothesize that colonialism and racial capitalism creates an environment for police violence, which leads to social movements like Black Lives Matter. I also argue that the commodification of race, an element of racial capitalism, serves as a distraction from the overall impact of systematic racism. I examine …
A Quantitative Examination Of Factors That Aid In The Persistence And Academic Success Of Black Male Initiative Participants, Timothy J. Fair
A Quantitative Examination Of Factors That Aid In The Persistence And Academic Success Of Black Male Initiative Participants, Timothy J. Fair
Theses and Dissertations
For Black men attending college, there are often a host of barriers inhibiting their success. In addition to academic challenges, some Black men report higher feelings of alienation, isolation and cultural incongruence than their White peers. For many, these challenges are so tempestuous that they often leave the academy without earning a degree. In efforts to increase the academic and social success of students, universities have implemented Black male initiatives to decrease the early withdraw of men of color. The purpose of this study was to better understand the impact of Black male initiatives on the academic success and likelihood …

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the academic performance of students in technical studies and their grades in remedial courses of study. Data were gathered from students in the Law Enforcement Technology program from the 2013-2014 academic year at a rural community college. This study examined the statistical correlation of the grades of those students who completed Beginning English and Beginning Algebra with those same students who also completed CRJ 1313 Introduction to Criminal Justice and CRJ 1323 Police Administration and Organization. The study utilized a Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation (Pearson r), and …
The Influence Of Organizational Demographics And Whistleblowing Factors On Employee Perceptions Of Procedural Justice, Patrick Clark Exmeyer
The Influence Of Organizational Demographics And Whistleblowing Factors On Employee Perceptions Of Procedural Justice, Patrick Clark Exmeyer
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to advance the base of both whistleblowing and procedural justice literature. Building upon previous whistleblowing and procedural justice literature is accomplished through analysis of how organizational, demographic, and legislative factors contributing to whistleblowing shape employee perceptions of procedural justice. The act of whistleblowing has garnered considerable attention over the course of the past several decades. Employee disclosures of organizational wrongdoing have shaped influential research focusing on the characteristics of whistleblowers, organizational conditions contributing to whistleblowing, the motivations and intentions of whistleblowers, as well as both the personal and professional consequences of employees engaging in whistleblowing. These literary …
Examining Gendered Patterns Of Techniques Of Neutralization Using Fictional Crime Dramas, Lauren Michel Vasquez
Examining Gendered Patterns Of Techniques Of Neutralization Using Fictional Crime Dramas, Lauren Michel Vasquez
Theses and Dissertations
The following dissertation uses fictional crime dramas to determine whether there are gendered patterns in the use of techniques of neutralization between and among male and female offenders. It utilizes a mixed method approach to answer three separate research questions: (1) how techniques of neutralization are used in fictional crime dramas, (2) whether such portrayals vary between and among male and female offenders, and (3) how elements of doing gender play a role in the gendered nature of males and female offenders’ techniques of neutralization. The sample included 124 episodes from four different fictional crime dramas and 383 individual offenses …

Rebuilding Relationships After Civil War: Relational Justice And Ex-Combatant Reintegration In Liberia, Ferdinand Kwaku Danso
Rebuilding Relationships After Civil War: Relational Justice And Ex-Combatant Reintegration In Liberia, Ferdinand Kwaku Danso
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
Contemporary civil wars occur in the context of eroded state capacity, marked by the absence of effective formal institutions. At the same time, these wars occur in relational contexts where relationships are important. While institutions and relationships matter, ongoing approaches to peacebuilding give insufficient attention to the relational dimensions of conflict and peacebuilding. When relational imperatives are considered, the transitional justice mechanisms employed often prove unsuitable or insufficient to restore justice and reconcile estranged individuals and groups, as the Liberian case amply demonstrates. This exploratory and grounded theory research was conducted in response to the call by the Truth and …

Bound To A Brothel: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Institutional And Non-Institutional Anti-Trafficking Training Curriculum And Awareness-Raising Material, Kaylen Runyan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores various facets of human trafficking ranging from signs of victims to recruitment methods of traffickers, focusing specifically on the inherent connection of complex trauma as an effect of experiencing exploitation. Trauma serves as the overarching theme throughout this paper as I analyze anti-trafficking institutional organizations and their training curricula as well as non-institutional organizations and their awareness-raising material. The questions I focus on are: How do institutional texts and training curriculum prepare individuals to interact with victims of trauma? And how do non-institutional awareness-raising materials educate audiences who do not work directly with victims of trafficking on …

Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers
Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers
Master's Theses
Across the Pacific in Auckland, New Zealand two rap groups, Homebrew and @Peace, are contributing to a theoretically rich and socially conscious Hip Hop scene. Their music critically questions commercialism and conformity in a culture shaped by a history of colonialism. This makes their message starkly opposed to the normative values of New Zealand. The musicians of Homebrew and @Peace, a mix of Polynesian and Pakeha (people of European descent), employ methods of decolonization theory through the use of storytelling and focus on indigenous values. In a country that has adopted the neoliberal beliefs that competition drives human relations, and …

The Anchorage, Alaska Municipal Pretrial Diversion Program: An Initial Assessment, Cory R. Lepage, Jeff D. May
The Anchorage, Alaska Municipal Pretrial Diversion Program: An Initial Assessment, Cory R. Lepage, Jeff D. May
Alaska Law Review
Pretrial diversion programs have the potential to prevent future criminal behavior through intervention and community based services. This may be particularly true for specific populations of offenders such as those with mental illness, substance abuse disorder, and those with co-occuring disorders. Pretrial diversion programs take low-level offenders out of the jail population, both reducing system overpopulation and costs of incarceration. The programs also provide speedy case processing for minor crimes resulting in savings to the court system and personnel. Pretrial diversion can help an offender avoid a criminal conviction and potentially avoid future criminal violations. Results indicate that most Anchorage …
Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Theses
This research examines how well New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative aligns with four theoretical domains: subculture of violence, deterrence, rational choice/situational crime prevention, and implementation theories. It reviews how procedural justice and community integration align with these theories and the evidence-based strategies that GIVE sites implement. Sites are grouped for analysis, and their characteristics are described. The literature review describes each theoretical domain’s core principles as they pertain to GIVE. It shows that the theories can be compatible and that their integration is difficult but would likely make the initiative more effective. The primary research questions …
Inventory Of Legal Knowledge: An Examination Of Psychometric Properties In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Kristen T. Campbell
Inventory Of Legal Knowledge: An Examination Of Psychometric Properties In An Inpatient Psychiatric Setting, Kristen T. Campbell
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
An estimated 60,000 forensic evaluations are conducted annually to determine if defendants meet the legal standard of competence to stand trial (CST); that is, if defendants have the ability to consult with their attorney, as well as if they have a rational and factual understanding of their charges. Estimated rates of feigning (i.e., faking or exaggerating of deficits or symptoms) in CST evaluations have ranged from 8% to 21%. Given this prevalence, it is necessary for forensic evaluators to have access to psychometrically sound instruments that can aid in the detection of feigning. Performance validity tests (PVTs) are designed to …

Justice-Involved Women And Redemptive Narratives: The Role Of Personal Resources And Environmental Factors On The Desistance Process, Elizabeth K. Allen
Justice-Involved Women And Redemptive Narratives: The Role Of Personal Resources And Environmental Factors On The Desistance Process, Elizabeth K. Allen
Doctoral Dissertations
The rate of incarceration in the United States is six to ten times higher than in countries with similar living standards. There are currently more than seven million Americans who are justice-involved. Women are the fastest growing sector, with more than one million women currently under some form of correctional supervision. Community reintegration after incarceration is challenging and the needs of women are specific and distinct, differing in intensity and multiplicity from men. Frequently, women’s histories include poverty, abuse, and involvement with mental health and child service agencies which have profound implications for incarceration and reintegration. Therefore, all levels of …

Pray Away The Criminal? Crime, Religiosity, Gender And Sexuality Over The Life Course, Meredith Conover-Williams, Joice Chang
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals in the United States seem to be making strides in some social institutions, such as family, due to the recent ruling on marriage equality. Still, there remains a contentious relationship between sexual and gender minority youth, adults, and the institution of religion, for many faith systems. This study explores the relationship between religiosity, long theorized to act as a protective factor from offending, gender and sexuality. We use three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) (Wave I, N = 12,940; Wave III, N = 10,742; …

The Institutional Factors That Affect The Academic And Financial Success Of Mid-American Conference Schools, Mckayla Johnson
The Institutional Factors That Affect The Academic And Financial Success Of Mid-American Conference Schools, Mckayla Johnson
Sport Management Undergraduate
Athletic departments and institutions are spending an increasing amount of money on athletics. They believe that increasing spending will meet their mission to improve student-athletes’ academic success. However, the question arises, is the money being spent on athletics actually contributing to that goal? Secondary data was correlated to find the relationship between the institutional, academic, and financial factors. The results of this study found that the majority of these relationships were not significant meaning that these factors are not working together to meet that mission. Therefore, those institutions who participate in the athletic department arms races will not see an …
Current Criminal Justice System Policy Reform Movements: The Problem Of Unintended Consequences, Robert D. Crutchfield
Current Criminal Justice System Policy Reform Movements: The Problem Of Unintended Consequences, Robert D. Crutchfield
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
The history of criminal justice reform in the United States has numerous examples of both good and negative consequences. Frequently the latter have been unintended and unexpected. In this article, I point to several potential unintended consequences of the current, bipartisan push for criminal justice reform and how they may be exacerbated by the failure of policy makers to heed the knowledge of both academic criminologists and criminal justice system practitioners. Criminal justice reform can minimize the possibility of unintended negative consequences by using this knowledge and by following time honored principles of justice.

Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich
Between The Rural And Suburban: The Social, Political, And Economic Dynamics Of Policing Forsyth County, Ga, Alexandra Vuich
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This thesis reveals how perceptions of crime produce real outcomes in how Forsyth County is policed by the local sheriff’s office and how the residents come to police themselves and each other. Using historical analysis and ethnographic methods, this thesis explores the county’s racial history and shifts in political economy that shape perceptions of crime and their subsequent influence on policing amid decreasing crime rates. It is argued that the forceful removal of all African American residents in 1912, the economic shift away from an agriculture and poultry-based industry, the construction of Lake Lanier and Buford Dam, the staggered expansion …

Is Students’ Knowledge Of The Student Conduct Code Associated With Their Conduct Code-Breaking Behaviors On Campus?, Joy D. Bonner
Honors College Theses
Annually colleges and universities spend countless hours updating their student codes of conduct, but is this added time worth the hassle if students continue to break the code? The purpose of this study was to examine the effects a student’s knowledge of a university’s code of conduct may have on the amount of code-breaking behaviors committed on campus. A survey was administered to students at Georgia Southern University analyzing students’ knowledge and perceptions of academic dishonesty and plagiarism on campus. Each participant was asked a series of questions analyzing their knowledge of the code, its sanctions, as well as the …
