Impact Of Numeracy On Understanding Of Prostate Cancer Risk Reduction In Psa Screening, Kevin Koo, Charles D. Brackett, Ellen H. Eisenburg, Kelly A. Kieffer, Elias S. Hyams Dec 2017

Impact Of Numeracy On Understanding Of Prostate Cancer Risk Reduction In Psa Screening, Kevin Koo, Charles D. Brackett, Ellen H. Eisenburg, Kelly A. Kieffer, Elias S. Hyams

Dartmouth Scholarship

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for prostate cancer in men of average risk remains controversial. Patients’ ability to incorporate risk reduction data into their decision-making may depend on their numeracy. We assessed the impact of patients’ numeracy on their understanding of the risk reduction benefits of PSA screening. Men attending a general internal medicine clinic were invited to complete a survey. Four versions of the survey each included a three-item numeracy test and PSA risk reduction data, framed one of four ways: absolute (ARR) versus relative risk reduction (RRR), with or without baseline risk (BR). Respondents were asked to adjust their …

This quantitative content analysis (N = 871) coded for the visual content, production techniques, nonverbal content and frames used by the five candidates who used Snapchat as a strategic tool to engage voters throughout the course of the 2016 US primary campaign. The results indicate Clinton (D) deviated from the other candidates in the visual and nonverbal content as well as the frames used in her snaps. The implications of these findings on …

Creativity, Laterality And Critical State Balance In Learning, Jenny Rock, Asher Flatt Dec 2017

Creativity, Laterality And Critical State Balance In Learning, Jenny Rock, Asher Flatt

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

Understanding the intersecting cognitive pathways that are integral to ways of thinking, creating and functioning in both art and science is an important grounding for a STEAM educational approach. We combine three divergent concepts, including creativity, hemisphere laterality, and critical state theory, to argue for a more balanced approach to learning as part of a modern meaning-centered education in STEAM. Reviewing the concept of hemisphere laterality, or how the two hemispheres of our brain have different (though not disconnected) ways of processing sensory information, we note how these two means of interpreting the world have become unbalanced in traditional modes …

Paleo Journey: An Interactive Paleolithic Cave Art Experience. Using The User Experience (Ux) Design Process To Develop An Interactive And Immersive Paleolithic Cave Art Exhibit Suitable For Children Between Five (5) And Seven (7) Years Old., James J. Parrillo

Theses

Most European caves containing Paleolithic cave art paintings (dating from approximately 10,000 – 50,000 years BP) are no longer accessible to the general public, and their visitor centers often require lengthy travel for tourists. In addition, the interactivity associated with these exhibits largely focus upon computer screens, and not a tactile interface. This Thesis project seeks to create a prototype of a tactile interface on a mock cave surface using projection mapping and motion tracking.

In developing this exhibit, the user experience (UX) design process was used as a methodology for defining, researching and co-designing for a particular user segment. …

Improving management practices applied to water buffalo may not only improve their welfare but has also an economic benefit. This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of blindfold and tail bending during restraint for veterinary treatment of Egyptian buffaloes on their behavioural reactivity and physiological responses to stress. Forty-eight Egyptian water buffalo bulls, naïve to the testing situation, were arbitrarily assigned to either blindfold (visual restriction) (BF), tail bending (physical control) (TT) or control (CT) (no visual restriction or …
