Sticky Like Butter: The Language Surrounding Corporate Social Responsibility Is Uninspiring And Therefore Not Embraced, Matt Kincaid
Sticky Like Butter: The Language Surrounding Corporate Social Responsibility Is Uninspiring And Therefore Not Embraced, Matt Kincaid
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
The research discussed in this article began with an interest in examining the relationship between servant-leadership and social responsibility. In my time both owning and working within companies, I had become familiar with different perspectives and opinions on social responsibility, and had witnessed first-hand the struggles that organizations often experience in attempting to carry out effective strategies.

A Diabetes-Free Breathitt County: Implementation Of The National Diabetes Prevention Program In Pharmacies, Urvi Patel
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) is a primary prevention program endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program’s purpose is to promote dietary modification and physical activity to reduce the incidence of diabetes. NDPP is currently offered by national organizations such as the Young Men’s Christian Association and Weight Watchers. However, NDPP is not commonly available in geographic areas that are in the most need of such preventive health programming such as rural communities. One such area where NDPP is not widely offered is the Diabetes Belt, an area within the Appalachian region of the …

Environmental Injustice And The Pursuit Of A Post-Carbon World: The Unintended Consequences Of The Clean Air Act As A Cautionary Tale For Solar Energy Development, Shannon Elizabeth Bell
Environmental Injustice And The Pursuit Of A Post-Carbon World: The Unintended Consequences Of The Clean Air Act As A Cautionary Tale For Solar Energy Development, Shannon Elizabeth Bell
Brooklyn Law Review
Most policy decisions aimed at improving the environment have been conceived and implemented without attention to issues of environmental justice, creating what sociologist Julian Agyeman calls an “equity deficit” in the discourse and practice of environmental sustainability. This article presents the unintended consequences of the Clean Air Act (CAA) and its amendments as a cautionary tale for what can happen when environmental regulations are enacted without adequately considering environmental justice concerns. Although the CAA has been responsible for much good in the United States as a whole—including significant reductions in acid rain and health-harming pollutants—it has also brought significant harm …

Climate Change And Legitimate Governance: Land Use And Transportation Law And Policy In California, Thomas D. Beamish, Ryken Grattet, Debbie Niemeier
Brooklyn Law Review
The primary challenge of addressing climate change lies in it requiring a rethinking and even reorganization of fundamental societal institutions that define much of contemporary life. In this paper, we examine an innovative effort to address climate change through regional land-use and transportation policy. We focus on the activities of a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)—a novel governance structure that coordinates transportation funding between federal, state, and local governments. In 2008, the California senate mandated that the state’s seventeen MPOs implement the Sustainable Communities Strategies Act (SB 375), an effort to align transportation and land-use planning with the state’s ambitious Global …
Grassroots Innovation Systems For The Post-Carbon World: Promoting Economic Democracy, Environmental Sustainability, And The Public Interest, Shobita Parthasarathy
Grassroots Innovation Systems For The Post-Carbon World: Promoting Economic Democracy, Environmental Sustainability, And The Public Interest, Shobita Parthasarathy
Brooklyn Law Review
This article uses a sociotechnical systems approach to advocate for an alternative way of thinking about the role of innovation in international development efforts, specifically those focused on environmental sustainability and a post-carbon world. This approach views technology and society as inextricably linked, highlighting how particular values, norms, individual rights and responsibilities, social practices and relationships, and aspects of political culture are embedded in the design, development, implementation, and use of technology. Using the example of clean cookstoves, this article argues that technologies customarily deployed to achieve international development goals are embedded in particular values, assumptions, and social structures that …
Embodying Our Future Through Collaboration: The Change Is In The Doing, M Palmer, P White, S Wooltorton
Embodying Our Future Through Collaboration: The Change Is In The Doing, M Palmer, P White, S Wooltorton
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
Contributors to this special edition have agreed that we want a future of ecojustice and ecological sustainability. Our paper unpacks experiences of oppression within the context of middle class academic privilege, undertaking resistances and working, in relationship, learning to live more sustainably in the Year of Living Sustainably. In this writing we argue the case for activism in the academy and collaboratively build resilience towards more sustainable ways of being. By co-writing and analysing fictionalised stories we demonstrate how contemporary universities contribute to the unsustainability of social and ecological systems. This paper presents a love story grounded in poststructural ecofeminist …

Exploring Scale And Boundaries In Food System Assessments, Jane Christine Mulcahy
Exploring Scale And Boundaries In Food System Assessments, Jane Christine Mulcahy
Theses - ALL
The local food movement in the U.S. has permeated popular culture and academia; it has even infiltrated non-profit work, urban and regional planning, and government entities. By its very name, the local food movement binds food activity to a scale – the local – that is nebulous and context dependent. Scale is a crucial part of the discourse and implementation of both local food movement efforts and food studies research – scale is used to conceptualize local food system (LFS) efforts as well as implement them. This thesis explores how scale is operationalized in LFS activities through food system assessments …

Draft Planning Scheme: Postgraduate Urban Design Student Project On Behalf Of Fingal County Council, David O'Connor
Students Learning with Communities
The project brief for a Kellystown Urban Design Masterplan was set out in September 2016. Although the lands are designated as an LAP in the Draft Fingal Development Plan 2017-2023, the approach is that of an SDZ. Constraints and opportunities were identified early on in the process. The site was visited on several occasions by the team and photographs were taken. A meeting was held on site with Fingal Council in late October 2016 clarified the project brief. The importance of focusing commercial and retail activity in the existing Coolmine Industrial Estate and village was emphasised. The focus of the …

Teaching Applied Sustainability: A Practicum Based On Drafting Ordinances, Jonathan Rosenbloom, John C. Dernbach
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This Article describes and explains a sustainability law practicum class that is now taught in only two law schools, but which has considerable teaching and practical value. It also explains how this class is consistent with, and furthers, the growing demand for experiential, skills-based legal education employing formative assessment. The class uses a real-world setting to provide students with skills they will need to help clients meet their sustainability goals. These skills include applying the principles of sustainable development in specific contexts; researching local government law; drafting legislation and ordinances; giving short presentations; and counseling clients. These skills are developed …
Local And Diverse Economies As A Driver Of Sustainability: A Perspective From Us Cities, Alita M. Kane
Local And Diverse Economies As A Driver Of Sustainability: A Perspective From Us Cities, Alita M. Kane
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
Across the nation cities are currently seeking new methods of economic development that fit into the sustainable development framework. This search is due in part to the recognition that traditional methods of economic development have left many cities vulnerable to economic downturn and environmental deterioration. The question is what types of economies can foster sustainability in a city? This research explores the concept that localized and diverse economies could be a potential driver of sustainability. The ability of localized and diverse economies to increase economic autonomy and viability has been explored by many researchers but their relationship with sustainability has …

Non-Communicable Disease And Diabetes Screening In Community Settings In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Case Study In Senegal, West Africa, Rhonda Belue
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
Sub-Saharan Africa is faced with a significant and increasing burden of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (diabetes). In Senegal, the prevalence of diabetes has been documented to be as high as 8.1% in urban-dwelling Senegalese and is fast approaching the United States prevalence of approximately nine percent; however, insufficient resources are available for prevention efforts and disease management. As a result, many cases remain undiagnosed, leading to an increased likelihood of diabetes complications and mortality. Many of these cases remain undiagnosed or are diagnosed only after complications have developed, such as the need for amputation, kidney failure, …
Sms Parent Action Intervention (Span): A Pilot Study To Assess The Feasibility Of Using Text Messaging To Promote Child Health On An American Indian Reservation, Julia M. Malich
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Abstract
Purpose: Childhood obesity and its associated health risks are widely recognized as a major public health crisis in the United States (Johnson & Johnson, 2014; Proctor, 2008; Rogers et al, 2013; Vinci et al, 2016) and worldwide (Elías-Boneta, Toro, Garcia, Torres, & Palacios, 2015). Among children in low-income families, American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) children have the highest prevalence of obesity (21.1%) compared to other racial/ethnic groups (14.74% overall) (Pan et al, 2015). Parents play an important role in introducing healthy foods and encouraging physical activity in young children (Birch & Ventura, 2009; Lindsay et al., 2006; Natale et al., …

Called To Teach: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Community College Adjunct Faculty’S Teaching Self-Efficacy, Christy L. Tyndall
Called To Teach: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Community College Adjunct Faculty’S Teaching Self-Efficacy, Christy L. Tyndall
Theses and Dissertations
Adjunct faculty teach over 50% of courses in U.S. higher education but little is known about them as educators. Strong evidence has been found in the K-12 literature demonstrating the link between teachers’ beliefs, instructional practices, and subsequent student outcomes. Teaching self-efficacy, beliefs in one’s capabilities to perform specific tasks in a particular context, is an important contributor to motivation and performance (Tschannen-Moran et al., 1998). This research advances teaching and learning literature in higher education and provides insight into an understudied population of educators by exploring adjunct faculty’s teaching self-efficacy and factors that influence those beliefs. In this mixed …

Enhancing Ontario’S Rural Infrastructure Preparedness: Inter-Community Service Sharing In A Changing Climate — Environmental Scan, Bryce Gunson, Kylie Hissa
Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
Given the research that has been done in this environmental scan and the gaps found in this research, it is our aim to find out:
- What types of service sharing are going on in Ontario municipalities, particularly in rural/remote areas?
- How can inter-community service sharing (ICSS) benefit the asset management planning process in these rural/remote areas to enhance capacities for climate change resilience?
Climate change (CC) will exacerbate deterioration to existing infrastructure and increase replacement costs. Improved preparedness reduces risks and increases efficiency, readiness and coping capacity. To increase the preparedness of Ontario rural communities, this project develops CC-Prepared Inter-Community …
Speculative Literature In Modern Society: Octavia Butler And The Tragedy Of The Commons, Katherine Elyse Miller
Speculative Literature In Modern Society: Octavia Butler And The Tragedy Of The Commons, Katherine Elyse Miller
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
What leads to peaceful prosperity and what leads to destructive collapse in any society? While it may seem daunting or overwhelming to dissect the success or collapse of a multi-faceted society, there are lenses and tools through which we are able to do so, such as political theory and speculative dystopian fiction. By using lenses to analyze the society in which we live, we are able to recognize the seeds of both prosperity and destruction in our society that may otherwise be overlooked or ignored. The speculative dystopian fiction of Octavia Butler may be considered as building upon the political …

Taking Good Works To The Next Level: Increasing Investment In And Support For Higher-Risk Innovation, Jessie Capper
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the possible avenues available to corporations and capital-managing entities seeking to increase their commitment to good works. These organizations have the potential to fill the gap in societal needs by supporting and investing in good works, including environmental protection and highly-innovative energy technologies, beyond the traditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) norm. These means include charitable giving, working with disadvantaged communities, corporate assistance to environmental or other social non-governmental organizations, and more. This thesis discusses the advantages and limitations of various corporate structures (C Corporations, S Corporations, LLCs, B Corps, L3Cs, and benefit corporations) and capital-managing …

“Sacrifice Zones” In The Green Energy Economy: Toward An Environmental Justice Framework, Dayna Scott, Adrian A. Smith
“Sacrifice Zones” In The Green Energy Economy: Toward An Environmental Justice Framework, Dayna Scott, Adrian A. Smith
Articles & Book Chapters
The environmental justice movement validates the grassroots struggles of residents of places which Steve Lerner refers to as “sacrifice zones”: low-income and racialized communities shouldering more than their fair share of environmental harms related to pollution, contamination, toxic waste, and heavy industry. On this account, disparities in wealth and power, often inscribed and re-inscribed through social processes of racialization, are understood to produce disparities in environmental burdens. Here, we attempt to understand how these dynamics are shifting in the green energy economy under settler colonial capitalism. We consider the possibility that the political economy of green energy contains its own …
