Pancho's Racket And The Long Road To Professional Tennis, Gregory I. Ruth Jan 2017

Pancho's Racket And The Long Road To Professional Tennis, Gregory I. Ruth

Dissertations

Historians have written little on sports in the United States compared to other topics. They have had even less to say about tennis than other popular sports in large part because the original research necessary to complete a full treatment of the history of the game appeared too daunting to undertake. By contrast, this study has made use of over a dozen arcHIVal collections around the country, many of which researchers have never used before, to tell the story of how tennis went from an amateur sport closely guarded by economic elitists and cultural purists to a professional sport thoroughly …

The Impact Of Rivalry Antecedents On Mediated Demand For An Individual Sport, Lamar Reams, Terry Eddy Jan 2017

The Impact Of Rivalry Antecedents On Mediated Demand For An Individual Sport, Lamar Reams, Terry Eddy

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

In contrast to research examining the social-psychological aspects of how sport fans perceive rivalry games in team sports, far less is known regarding the impact rivalries have on mediated consumer demand, a marketing outcome of interest to sport researchers and practitioners. Guided by economic demand theory, the current study developed a model to empirically examine the impact of Tyler and Cobbs' (2015) rivalry antecedents (conflict, peer, bias) on fan interest for an individual sport. The three-dimensional framework provided the foundation for the selection of thirteen rivalry-related variables, in addition to control determinants established from prior literature. Results from the estimation …

Career Termination And Transition Experiences Of Former Collegiate Student-Athletes In Japan, Junya Adachi

Masters Theses

Athletes are unique groups of individuals who make a career out of sports. They face challenges to get into a sport, to stay in it and to adapt to life after their athletic career. The primary objective of this study was to explore the challenges and experiences that Japanese student-athletes encounter when they terminate their athletic career. More specifically, this study examined personal and sport characteristics, emotional responses, psychosocial support, coping strategies and other variables (e.g., gender, athletic identity) that may have impacted the athlete's reactions to career termination. Participants were 76 former Japanese student-athletes (ages 22-38 years; M= 38, …

Co-Creation Experience: Measurement Development And Influence On Value In Sharing Economy, Pei Zhang Jan 2017

Co-Creation Experience: Measurement Development And Influence On Value In Sharing Economy, Pei Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction, an increasing attention has been paid to the scholarly discussion of value co-creation. One of the most essential problems in value co-creation is the development of comprehensive conceptualizations and measurement scales of value co-creation. However, most existing scales concentrate on co-creation behavior instead of co-creation experience and the development of a valid and reliable measurement scale of co-creation experience has been regarded as a top research priority. Meanwhile, the emergence of shared experience in tourism and hospitality has raised great attention from both academics and industry practitioners. Tourist shared experience such as participating in peer-to-peer accommodation inherently …

Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Reconstructing A School District Owned Athletic Facility, James Price Jan 2017

Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Reconstructing A School District Owned Athletic Facility, James Price

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Frank “Buck” Weeber Gymnasium has been a pillar of the suburban Detroit city River Rouge, Michigan since the 1940’s when the emphasis of athletics became established within the community. The gym is the home of 14 state championship basketball teams (13 boys, 1 girls) and many great athletes. However, in 2000 the gym along with the conjoined high school were closed down due to asbestos and poor piping in favor of a new high school across the street (Price, 2016-1017). The new gym inside the high school lacks the same prestige and luster of the “The Buck.” The purpose of …

Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns Jan 2017

Academic Clustering: Mid-Major Issues Within Women’S Intercollegiate Athletics, Alexander Severns

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

Academic clustering has become an epidemic across all intercollegiate levels. Academic clustering is present when at least twenty-five percent of an athletic team, or department, is specialized in one academic area (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). This concept has been often examined among collegiate athletes; however, most research has been centralized on top-tier football programs and other revenue generation sports. This ignores the collective intercollegiate landscape as a whole. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the idea of academic clustering, but with a more under representative demographic. Women’s Basketball and Softball student athletes’ academic interests within the …

Optimal Parental Involvement: An Action Oriented Guide For Parents Of Youth Athletes, Alyson Johnson

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

This paper develops a guide for improving involvement of parents and other adult contributors’ in youth sport for children aged 6-12 years. The purpose of this guide is to provide practical and applied suggestions for parents grounded in research from the fields of sport psychology, developmental psychology, and parenting psychology. Monsaas (1985) and Wolfenden and Holt (2005) emphasized the importance of having a strong parental support network in youth sport. Knight & Holt (2013) noted that parents would benefit from more specific direction regarding how to show support for their children. To fill this need, the guide utilizes Self Determination …

Athletes Quality Of Life After Retirement, Kevin Estrada Jan 2017

Athletes Quality Of Life After Retirement, Kevin Estrada

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

Professional athletes have had a long life of being able to compete in the sport they love. Once retried, most athletes quality of life worsens. Injuries and the dramatic change from competing sets up a former athlete for adversity. Most people believe that athletes are privileged individuals that earn too much money for the work they do. However, consequences such as bankruptcy, depression, and even suicide points otherwise.

●The findings show that although athletes might have a gifted early life the quick change in lifestyle sets them up for failure. Also I agree that former athletes have a worse quality …

Gender Pay Gap In Athletics, George Siliman Jan 2017

Gender Pay Gap In Athletics, George Siliman

Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects

The pay gap is a measure of what women are paid relative to men. It is important to to minimize the gender pay gap in athletics so it can successfully help society move in forward progression and not hinder on the past. The effects on women in professional sport setting, and the overall difference between males and females in athletics all play a significant role on the fluctuated pay gap.

Women play a prominent role in athletics but the lack of compensation devalues them as competitors and athletes. In sum, I learned about the fluctuation of the pay gap between …

Modeling The Relationship Between Destination Perceived Value And Tourist Souvenir Buying Intention, Wei Wang, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong, Pauline Sullivan

AMTP Proceedings 2017

Therefore, this research explores the influence of value perceptions on tourists’ souvenir purchase decisions. Particularly, this study seeks to answer two specific research questions: 1) will value perception have a direct influence on tourist souvenir buying intentions? and 2) which aspect of perceived value has stronger ties with tourist souvenir buying intentions.

A convenience sample of 380 respondents from a southeastern US university filled out survey instruments. The …
